WELCOME TO LUMINATE

WELCOME TO LUMINATE! Tena koe. Nga mihi atu ki a koutou. Nau mai, haere mai, karanga mai! Luminate is a vibrant festival of cutting-edge live and electronic music, circus arts, inspirational knowledge sharing, holistic healing and pioneering environmental initiatives. In rolling meadows surrounded by native beech forest, amid the mountaintops of the Pikikirunga range, we gather together for eight days to participate in an authentic and diverse, multifaceted festival of celebration and inspiration. World-class musicians rev up loving audiences; friends and families camp at the edge of the trees; wise teachers and healers share their knowledge and skills; and together we create an intentional community of joy, magic and transformation. It’s a world where we celebrate the best of life, and live in harmony with each other and the land. This year we have an added focus of activating animal awareness and creature consciousness. Luminate is timed to synchronise with the ancient seasonal festival of Lughnasadgh (“lunasa”), midway between summer solstice and autumn equinox. As a traditional harvest time, it is a week to pause, take time out, and celebrate all that the earth gives us. Whilst the festival has grown over the years into an eight-day celebration attracting participants from many cultures and nationalities, and welcoming all ages, the spirit of Luminate stays true to its organic roots, maintaining a clear ethos of ecological mindfulness, and holding firmly to the intention of activating positive change.

We welcome you to join us in co-creating this world at Luminate 2015, as we gather for our seventh festival season.

ACTIVATING ANIMAL AWARENESS AND CREATURE CONSCIOUSNESS The creatures of the planet are talking to us. They are facing many challenges. Perhaps our greatest challenge is to embrace and honour all lifeforms that we share this planet with. Align with your inner animal energy, create something creature-like to wear, dance your totem animal, embellish yourself with costume, mask or paint. It would give us a huge buzz if you’d resist buying things new, and instead upcycle, recycle, re-use resources and use natural materials. ECOLOGY

ECOLOGY ECOLOGICAL INITIATIVES AT LUMINATE Luminate’s environmental consciousness is fundamental to the ethos of the festival. Composting toilets and waste minimisation strategies may not appear to be the most glamorous aspects of festival life, yet at Luminate they are inspirational catalysts for change! Going beyond "sustainability", Luminate designs and implements pioneering systems that are taking the festival to a place that is "net positive". Luminate’s eco-innovation and clean environment strategy is apparent throughout all the aspects of the festival. You can find out many more details on the website. As a participant at Luminate you are an integral part of the success of this strategy by engaging with the initiatives and taking personal responsibility:

WASTE MINIMISATION 1. There are no rubbish or recycling bins on site. Be prepared to pack out what you bring

2.

3. 4. 5. 6.

in and leave no trace. Packaging should be reduced at source with conscious product buying, and avoid bringing unnecessary packaging or disposables onto the site. When visiting the Village Market, bring your own plate/ cutlery /cup for food and drinks. Market traders at Luminate do not use disposables or sell drinks in plastic cans or bottles. Dishwashing amenities are provided for your convenience. There is a plate and cup hire stall for those who forget their own! Bring your own containers to refill water from the taps provided. Water is from an underground spring source. A composting area for food scraps is provided close to the Village Market. Luminate is a non-alcohol event, thank you for your cooperation in this.

COMPOSTING TOILETS • Composting toilets are situated at various locations throughout the festival site. • These toilets are for biodegradables only. Bring your own rubbish bag for any plastic items

such as pads or nappies, and take such items with you to dispose of appropriately when you return home. • Toilet paper is recycled eco-paper. Be responsible and minimise your use of it. • Men – Use the urinals and avoid peeing in the toilets! • The composting toilets utilise a natural thermophillic system and create a much needed resource, ultimately feeding trees and returning nutrients to the land. 40

Luminate Festival 2015

ECOLOGY

• Shift Happens - We recommend reading The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins for

detailed information on composting toilets, especially if you need to take a shift ; )

ECO- SHOWERS • Solar and eco showers are provided. Make sure you conserve water at all times. • All cleaning and washing products that you bring must be biodegradable to reduce impact

on the environment.

ORGANIC CAFES • Each cafe that is run by Luminate serves only organic food, snacks and refreshments. • Local products are favoured where possible to reduce transport. • All food is vegetarian or vegan, and there are gluten free options. • The cafes are fundraisers for Luminate Festival Trust.

SMOKE-FREE SPACES • Marquees, covered spaces and dance-floors are all non-smoking areas. Thank you for

considering others. • Bring a container for your cigarette butts, or the butts can be placed in the fire.

FOREST REGENERATION • The forest is a living ecosystem and is currently showing signs of new regeneration.

Activities such as camping, that will disturb this process are not permitted. • To minimise impact please walk on existing tracks if possible when visiting the forest. • The forest is home to the Powelliphanta – the rare giant native snail. Leave any shells as you find them and be careful where you walk. Do not remove the shells as the snails need to eat them for generating new shells. The beautiful snails are an “at risk” species; thank you for caring for them.

WHERE TO TAKE YOUR RUBBISH AND RECYCLING In the spirit of self-reliance, you are responsible for any rubbish that you generate and you will need to pack it out with you. Takaka and Motueka have rubbish and recycling stations situated just outside the town centres. They are signposted: • on the road between Takaka and Pohara • on the road leaving Motueka towards Nelson

There are also transfer stations at Richmond and Nelson.

THANK YOU TO ECO STORE! We really appreciate all your support over the years

For more info on each of the ecological initiatives check out the website www.luminatefestival.co.nz

CANAAN DOWNS COLLECTIVE

CANAAN DOWNS COLLECTIVE AOTEAROA Canaan Downs is one of New Zealand’s most iconic, natural outdoor venues, and has a rich history of music events including The Gathering of the late 1990s-early 2000 era, and Luminate Festival since 2008. The land has also recently featured as one of The Hobbit film locations. Canaan Downs covers 200 acres, with approximately half in native beech forest and half in open grassland. The geomorphology includes karst (limestone) features, deep caves and marble/quartz outcrops. The land contains some of the oldest rock formations in New Zealand, and sits at around 750m elevation in the Pikikirunga mountain range. The Canaan Downs Collective formed in 2011, and raised sufficient funds to purchase the land, becoming responsible kaitiaki-guardians of this beautiful space. This project is an example of cooperative land ownership, sustainable land management, community participation and innovative environmental initiatives. The aims and objectives of the Canaan Downs Collective include: • manage the land in an environmentally friendly manner • assist regeneration of the beech forest • protect and enhance the biodiversity of the native flora and fauna • ensure that Canaan Downs remains available and accessible to our communities for events which are in harmony with the land and the Collective’s vision • establish food growing initiatives • provide a sanctuary for at-risk endemic species Currently there are over 30 members of the Collective, (including people from throughout New Zealand and Luminate Festival Trust). Luminate Trust is an important strategic alliance and supporter of this project. There are opportunities for people who are aligned with the aims, objectives and strategies to support the project, become involved in the land and become a member of the Canaan Downs Collective. Be inspired to join us as we co-create this collaborative vision, continuing the legacy of this unique and amazing land.
