WELCOME TO LUMINATE

WELCOME TO LUMINATE! Tena koe. Nga mihi atu ki a koutou. Nau mai, haere mai, karanga mai! Welcome to the eighth edition of Luminate! Festivals by their nature include a significant fun factor! Luminate is an amazingly diverse event, with a wide range of music, workshops, circus acts, children's entertainers, a village market & healing zone, all set in a beautiful natural environment amid the mountaintops of Pikikirunga, surrounded by native forest. Luminate attracts a wide age range of adults, teenagers, children and families. The festival is full of love, it's fun, easy to meet people, make new friends, things flow, there's heaps to do. In this comprehensive festival guide we provide an overview of the activities on offer during the eight days and nights of Luminate 2017. We also take this opportunity to delve deep into the ethos and philosophy of Luminate, from pioneering ecological initiatives to sacred geometry and sacred activism. A core principle that Luminate encourages people to engage with is self-responsibility, recognising that the choices we make are critical in manifesting the “reality” that we all share. If we wish to see an ecology in balance, thriving and healthy, then we must make decisions and take actions to support this. Learning skills of self-reliance, growing food, alternative health techniques, natural & traditional building methods, composting, minimising waste & maximising use of resources, practicing compassionate communication, taking time for personal development, utilising the therapeutic benefits of music and creative arts, are all valuable assets which individuals can share to help co-create resilient communities. Getting back to basics is the key, literally it's time to deal with our “shift”….. for example, composting toilets complete a natural cycle returning much needed nutrients back to the land, and whether living in a rural community, town, city, or camping in nature, knowing how to compost and avoid contributing to environmental pollution is hugely important.

MUSIC OVERVIEW

MUSIC OVERVIEW RESONATING TO THE SOUND VIBRATIONS….. Music is a significant aspect of Luminate, reflecting the ancient intuitive connections that we have with polyrhythmic beats, layered sounds & harmonies, a desire to dance, to flow with the present moment, to connect with the divine cosmic source energy. Our natural affinity and need for music in our lives feels embedded in our cells, activates our dna, is a natural law of the universe….. it's fascinating that many of us respond to quite different beats and frequencies, and how there can be a tangible feeling of heart-mind coherence in any group of people enjoying music together; literally resonating to the sound vibrations….. Therefore at Luminate with 5 zones of music we create a schedule with a wide diversity to match many tastes. We invite you to take the opportunities to enjoy your favourite music, but also be present to artists that you have never heard of, check out music that you don’t usually listen to, go exploring in the sonic realms, be open to the flow, the rewards are infinite…..

MUSIC OVERVIEW

5 MUSIC ZONES - OVERVIEW LIVE STAGE The purpose of the Live Stage is to offer a range of contemporary live and electronic music that has a strong level of musical integrity and conscious intent; is fresh, stimulating, inspiring and dissolves boundaries of genre. We welcome well-renowned artists from around the world who play powerful music from heart-space, who are also keen to contribute in other ways, by playing alternative sets in other zones, joining with other musicians to create improvised jams, or hosting workshops. Many artists resonate so deeply with Luminate that they return over the years, we become friends, some even join the crew! Scheduling such a diversity of artists from traditional world music to psychedelic trance is fairly unique, and yet we’ve always done it this way, carefully inviting a dynamic flow between the days and nights, creating an ever-changing, unifying musical adventure.

TRIBAL Primal acoustic drumming circles of Tribal connect ancient traditions, weaving indigenous instruments, voice, body rhythm and dance into a sacred celebration of the present moment. This all takes place around a consciously tended fire, with an invitation to all participants to join in and co-create the musical journey.

CHILLOUNGE The purpose of the Chillounge is to hold space for people to fully unwind, genuinely relax, let go of hypertension, be still, find inner peace, chill out….. to support this we welcome musicians and djs who resonate with this concept. We aim to provide a deep level of sound healing, a place to connect with the power of slowing down…..

ELECTRONIC ZONE It all about dance, groove, funk, bass….. and an epic light show at night! The schedule brings together a carefully chosen eclectic range of electronic genres featuring well-known producers and djs from New Zealand, Australia and overseas. Each day and each night has a different theme, and here is always a place to dance surrounded by native forest and great vibes.

VILLAGE STAGE Providing a community focus in the Village Market, the Village Stage combines a program of musicians, children's entertainers, and open-mic sessions where festival participants can share their original music. This stage has been evolving steadily over the years, and through it we are able to present a range of live music with roots in folk, world and song. Luminate Festival 2017

ECOLOGY

ECOLOGY ECOLOGICAL INITIATIVES AT LUMINATE Luminate's environmental awareness is fundamental to the ethos of the festival. Composting toilets and waste minimisation strategies are proving to be inspirational catalysts for change! Going beyond "sustainability", Luminate designs and implements pioneering systems that aim to take the festival to a place that is "net positive". Luminate's eco-innovation and clean environment strategy is actioned throughout all aspects of the festival. As a participant at Luminate you are an integral part of the success of this strategy by engaging with the initiatives and taking personal responsibility.

WASTE MINIMISATION •

• • • •

There are no rubbish or recycling bins on site. Be prepared to pack out what you bring in and leave no trace. Packaging can be reduced at source with conscious product buying, and avoid bringing unnecessary packaging or disposables onto the site. Luminate has a range of cafes and food vendors engaged to provide a wide choice of organic nutrient dense food and drinks at very reasonable prices. Using these cafes reduces your need to bring lots of packaged food and greatly minimises the creation of rubbish. When visiting the Village Market, remember to bring your own plate/ cutlery / cup for food and drinks. Market traders at Luminate do not use disposables, and do not sell drinks in plastic cans or bottles. Dishwashing amenities are provided for your convenience. Luminate also provides a plate and cup hire service, and will have ceramic mugs for sale with our sacred geometry logo. Bring your own containers to refill water from the taps provided. Water is from an underground spring source, take care of it. A composting area for food scraps is provided close to the Village Market. Luminate is a non-alcohol event, thank you for your cooperation in this.

ECO SHOWERS • •

Solar and eco showers are provided. Make sure you conserve water at all times. All cleaning and washing products that you use must be biodegradable to reduce impact on the environment.

ECOLOGY

COMPOSTING TOILETS

Composting toilets are situated at several locations throughout the festival site. These toilets are for biodegradables only. Bring your own rubbish bag for any plastic items such as sanitary pads or nappies, and take such items with you to dispose of responsibly. Toilet paper is recycled eco-paper, as with all resources please minimise your use of it. Men - use the urinals and avoid peeing in the toilets – thankyou! The composting toilets utilise a natural thermophillic system and create a much needed resource, ultimately feeding trees and returning nutrients to the land. Shift Happens - We recommend reading The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins for detailed information on composting toilets, especially if you need to take a shift ; )

• • • •

SMOKE-FREE SPACES • •

Marquees, covered spaces and dance-floors are all non-smoking areas. Thank you for considering all others. Bring a container for your cigarette butts, or the butts can be placed in the fire.

FOREST REGENERATION • • •

The forest is a living ecosystem and is currently showing signs of new regeneration. Activities such as camping that will disturb this process are not permitted. To minimise impact please walk on existing tracks if possible when visiting the forest, and do not disturb the forest floor as this can damage the young seedlings. The forest is home to the Powelliphanta – the rare giant native snail. Leave any shells as you find them and be careful where you walk. Do not remove the shells as the snails need to eat them for generating new shells. The beautiful snails are an “at risk” species; thank you for caring for them.

You can find out many more details on Luminate's eco strategies on the Ecology page of the website Luminate Festival 2017 luminatefestival.co.nz/ecology

WHAT NEXT AFTER LUMINATE?.....

WHAT NEXT AFTER LUMINATE?..... At Luminate we strive to share knowledge, skills and wisdom that help individuals leave the festival feeling empowered, inspired and motivated to live more in harmony with nature, ourselves and others. MINIMISE IMPACT We’re all about minimising waste, avoiding creating rubbish in the first place, tackling this at source. All participants at Luminate are responsible for any resources they use and must pack out everything, leaving no trace. Here's some helpful guidance on what to do with any packaging and where to take it once you leave the festival: • Make sure you sort through all items, wash any cans or containers that can be recycled. • You will need to take your recycling & rubbish items to a council Refuse / Recycling centre, called a Resource Recovery Centre or Transfer Station - see below for directions. • You can buy TDC approved rubbish bags at the supermarket for anything that can’t be recycled, and then there is no charge to dispose of your rubbish when you take it to the Transfer Station. • Refuse /Recycling centres are signposted off main roads and have large facilities including a range of recycling bins and second hand shops. In fact they are also great places to score lots of handy resources and upcycle other people's “trash”.

LOCATION OF REFUSE /RECYCLING FACILITIES: Take the Luminate ethos of self-reliance with you, if you have generated any rubbish or recycling then show responsibility and encourage others to do the same. Thankyou! TAKAKA - 45 Scott Road, Takaka. On the road between Takaka and Pohara, off Abel Tasman Drive.

Open Mon, Wed, Fri, 8.30am – 4pm. Sat 9am – 4pm. Sun 1.30pm – 4pm. Along with rubbish & recycling facilities there is also a second hand shop which sells items reclaimed from going to the dump. You can visit nearby Labyrinth Rocks while you are there.

64 Luminate Festival 2017

WHAT NEXT AFTER LUMINATE?.....

MOTUEKA - Robinson Road, Mariri. On the right off SH6 after leaving Motueka towards Nelson.

Open Mon to Sat 9am – 4pm. Sun 1.30pm – 4pm. There is also a recycle shop which sells items reclaimed from going to the dump. NELSON - Nelson ReUse & Recycle Centre, 6 Vivian Place, off Pascoe Street in Tahunanui. (close to airport).

Mon to Sat 8am – 4.30pm. Sun 10am – 4.30pm. As well as rubbish & recycling facilities, there are two reuse shops on site where a wide range of second hand items are available for purchase, including “flash trash” at the front shop.

STAYING IN THE NELSON – TASMAN REGION There is a wide range of accommodation in the Nelson/Tasman region to suit all budgets, from hotels, motels and guest houses to backpackers and campsites. There are heaps of places with great food, great music, local artisans, and community events. If you wish to freedom camp there are local bylaws which allow camping in certain areas, but in many places it is not permitted. Local visitor centres usually have a list of approved places to camp, restrictions may include needing to have “self-contained” facilities. Some landowners may also be open to you camping on their land if you ask them first, and it is polite to offer a donation or koha. If you chose to freedom camp: • It's really important that you use your skills of self-reliance and leave no trace. Besides taking your rubbish with you to dispose of properly (see previous page), you will need to be responsible for your toilets needs. • Making a portable compost toilet for solids & paper is fairly easy and you can find DIY examples and instructions on the internet and on the Luminate website. Out in nature away from it all, it can be acceptable to bury your toilet matter, providing it is not near a stream or source of water. • Carry a spade. Never leave any toilet paper visible on the land! • Avoid the crowds. If there are lots of people already camping, consider finding a quieter spot. Wherever you go or chose to stay, make sure you enjoy yourself and take care of the environment. Luminate Festival 2017

SACRED GEOMETRY AT LUMINATE

SACRED GEOMETRY AT LUMINATE SACRED GEOMETRY CAN BE DESCRIBED AS "THE SHAPE CONSCIOUSNESS SELECTS TO INHABIT IN THE SUPERLUMINAL DOMAIN”. From the passion flower or a spiralling galaxy, we see patterns, cycles and forms in nature expressed via geometric patterns and Phi (the golden ratio). Since we began in 2008, Luminate has taken great care to embed golden ratio into all aspects of the festival, including the social dynamics. The festival site layout, alignment of zones, placement of poles, stage design, graphics and logos are all based on the geometry of the rhombic triacontahedron, pentagon, decagon, and rhombic hexecontahedron, providing harmonic resonance with nature, and enhancing ecological consciousness. The symbol in the new Luminate 2017 logo encodes the sacred geometrical energies of the great rhombic hexecontahedron, which is the hub of the Luminate 'spacecraft flotilla’, providing heart coherence to community on a local and universal scale. 'Spacecraft flotilla’ is a term adopted by the Luminate crew to describe the complex interconnectedness of all the parts of the festival that need to be organized and co-created with a shared vision, ethos and heart connection. When we sing-dance-commune and empathize with nature, our hearts and minds create music in the scale of phi harmonics, forming networks that extend beyond, yet embrace, all time and all space. As Luminate Festival hosts 5 music zones, 5 workshop zones, village market and many other features, all of the activity zones are connected by this sacred geometry, and to the central heart hub, both physically on the land, and in an organisational sense. Golden ratio geometries reveal the invisible web of living systems. At Luminate we use this natural order everywhere we can. This is how we can flow through time-space in harmonic heart coherence….. It is time for a focused intent to implement by action the change we would like to see. Luminate shows some cost effective options that can help complete the cycles that are currently broken. The geometry that we use represents the flux energy of creation, and the ability to change and to adapt to whatever is needed at the time from heart space resonance. Diverse perspectives, old and new, are needed so that different possibilities can be explored and the best accepted as a way forward. Hence the need for events to bring people together to gain focus and connect with shared purpose and intent. 74 Luminate Festival 2017

LUMINATE EDUCATIONAL & SPIRITUAL TRUST

LUMINATE EDUCATIONAL & SPIRITUAL TRUST Luminate runs on a huge amount of goodwill from hard working crew who hold the vision and ethos of the event deep in their hearts. This loyalty over the years from a significant number of organisational crew, has meant that Luminate has continued to deepen its coherence and resonance, has grown from 500 participants in the first year towards 5000 in 2017, and has been an authentically live-changing experience for thousands of people over the years, including us. Luminate requires an additional 500 volunteers to help with the set-up, pack down, and running of all of the services & activities during the festival. A common thread of motivation amongst the crew is to be of service to others. Our intention is the co-creation and manifestation of coherent community heartspace, of living in balance with nature, of taking self-responsibility for activating positive change, within the knowing of the oneness of all. If the passion is strong and we are doing all we can to support our energies with healthy life choices, then we are supported and things ow‌.. The festival has become so detailed and complex to organise that after 2013 Luminate became a biannual event. We look forward in future years to being able to utilize our networks and all we have learned to contribute even more to our communities, to achieve more of the Trust's aims and objectives. We invite everyone to look out for each other and the environment, to help out where they can, to be part of co-creating a wonderful festival and an authentic caring community both at the event and beyond. In gratitude and love, Jules Harper & Rita Davies, Luminate Festival Directors

CANAAN DOWNS COLLECTIVE

CANAAN DOWNS COLLECTIVE AOTEAROA Canaan Downs is one of New Zealand's most iconic, natural outdoor venues, and has a rich history of music events from the late 1990s to present times. The land has also recently featured as one of The Hobbit film locations, with several sites featuring in the trilogy. Canaan Downs covers 200 acres, with approximately half in native beech forest and half in open grassland. The geomorphology includes karst (limestone) features, deep caves and marble/quartz outcrops. The land contains some of the oldest rock formations in New Zealand, and sits at around 750m elevation in the Pikikirunga mountain range. The Canaan Downs Collective formed in 2011, and raised sufficient funds to purchase the land, becoming responsible kaitiaki-guardians of this beautiful space. This project is an example of cooperative land ownership, sustainable land management, community participation and innovative environmental initiatives. The aims and objectives of the Canaan Downs Collective include: 1. Manage the land in an environmentally and financially sustainable manner. 2. Assist regeneration of the existing Beech forest, re-establish native trees, protect and enhance the biodiversity of the native flora and fauna, and provide a sanctuary for at-risk endemic species. 3. Ensure that Canaan Downs remains available and accessible to our communities for future generations for visitor access, events and activities in keeping with the nature of the environment and the values of Canaan Downs Collective. 4. Develop organic food producing initiatives, such as establishing fruit and nut trees and food gardens. 5. Encourage and support the continuation and sustainability of events on the land which attract significant visitors to the region and have benefits to the wider community.

Currently there are close to 40 members of the Collective, comprising of people from the local Nelson-Tasman region and throughout New Zealand, and Luminate Festival Trust is also a key member. We welcome more people to join us. There are opportunities for people who are aligned with the aims, objectives and strategies to support the project, become involved in the land and become a member of the Canaan Downs Collective. If you would like to know more, there will be a workshop presentation and information sharing by members of the Canaan Downs Collective at Luminate 2017, giving an overview of the Collective's achievements, vision for the future, and tour of the land. Details will also be available to read at the Info Hub.
