Welcome to Les Roches Jin Jiang International Hotel Management College! Welcome to Shanghai, China! The People’s Republic of China, with its dynamic economy and thriving cities, is well on its way to being the largest economy in the world! The tourism and hospitality industry is following this trend and is booming at an unprecedented rate. In 2013 it was a US$ 44 billion business, projected to reach US$ 100 billion over the next 10 years. Furthermore, estimates indicate that China will be the world’s top travel destination by 2015. The most renowned international brands have opened their hotels and resorts in China and keep expanding their portfolios. Chinese travelers constitute the biggest group of travelers abroad, and are the No.1 source market in the world, spending the most on international tourism. There were a record 97 million Chinese traveling abroad in 2013; this growth is estimated to reach 200 million travelers by 2020. The exciting development of the hospitality industry in China means high demand for qualified professionals mastering international standards of excellence. The industry is eagerly looking for international hospitality management professionals with experience of studying and living in China, with the skill set and cultural understanding required to accommodate Chinese clientele, as well as the ability to work in an international environment. China is definitely the place to be for starting an international hospitality career. Our College was born out of the unique partnership between the largest hotel management group in China, Jin Jiang International, and Les Roches, with its 60 years of Swiss experience in fostering top-level managers for the hospitality industry. We are honored that in 2013, Les Roches Jin Jiang ranked No.1 International Hospitality Management School in China for an International Career. By studying and living in China all our students develop an international outlook and especially a strong skillset for accommodating Chinese customers.

LOCATED IN THE QUIET AND SPRAWLING GREENERY OF SHANGHAI NORMAL UNIVERSITY'S FENG XIAN CAMPUS, STUDENTS LIVE AND STUDY IN A COLLEGE TOWN BY HANGZHOU BAY. WITH A LONG BEACH AND PROTECTED FOREST, THE AREA HAS BECOME A MAJOR DRAW FOR RECREATIONISTS WHO FREQUENT THE NEARBY GOLF COURSES AND MARINAS. WHILE THE CAMPUS REMAINS AN IDEAL PLACE TO LEARN, A QUICK ONE HOUR BUS OR TAXI RIDE INTO THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN MAKES WEEKEND LIFE BOTH INTERESTING AND CONVENIENT. SHANGHAI IS A CITY OF CONTRASTS WHERE “EAST MEETS WEST”. THE ARCHITECTURE OF SHANGHAI RANGES FROM TRADITIONAL LANE HOUSES ON SMALL STREETS, BUSY WITH BICYCLES, CAFÉS, AND MERCHANTS, TO SOME OF THE WORLD’S TALLEST AND MOST DISTINCTIVE SKYSCRAPERS. IT REALLY IS A VIBRANT PLACE TO STUDY, WITH LOTS OF INTERNATIONAL EVENTS BEING HOSTED IN SHANGHAI EVERY YEAR: THE FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX, THE SHANGHAI ROLEX MASTERS TENNIS TOURNAMENT, MUSIC FESTIVALS AND CONCERTS, EXHIBITIONS, CONFERENCES, AND MUCH MORE. SHANGHAI IS LIKE AN OPEN CLASSROOM WHERE STUDENTS CAN PRACTICE THEIR MANDARIN, EXPERIENCE CHINESE CULTURE AND AN AMAZING INTERNATIONAL CITY ENVIRONMENT.

INTERNATIONAL THINKING

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

OUR INDUSTRY-FOCUSED PROGRAMS DELIVERED IN ENGLISH, ARE DESIGNED TO LEAD STUDENTS THROUGH THE NUMEROUS FACETS OF HOSPITALITY BY DEVELOPING THEIR OPERATIONAL, ADMINISTRATIVE AND MANAGERIAL EXPERTISE, WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON BUSINESS LEADERSHIP SKILLS. WE ACHIEVE THIS CAREFUL BALANCE BY INTERLOCKING ACADEMIC AND GUIDED HANDS-ON LEARNING. WE BELIEVE OUR STUDENTS GAIN A TRUE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE WHEN HOSPITALITY THEORY AND PRACTICE ARE COMBINED WITH GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES, PROVIDING THEM WITH A WEALTH OF LIFELONG PRACTICAL SKILLS ALONG WITH AN INTELLECTUALLY DEVELOPED MIND.

HOW DO YOU LEARN? HOW DO WE TEACH? ◥◥ CLASSROOM LEARNING - IS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF ALL PROGRAMS, WHERE THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN IMPORTANT BUSINESS MANAGEMENT THEORY.

◥◥ EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING - LEARNNG FROM EXPERIENCE, IS DONE THROUGH A COMBINATION OF CLASSROOM LEARNING AND LEARNING OUTSIDE OF THE TRADITIONAL CLASS ENVIRONMENT.

◥◥ INTERNSHIPS - REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE - REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE OBTAINED DURING ACADEMIC SEMESTERS, AND TO DEVELOP THE WORK ETHOS AND PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE REQUIRED FOR THE INDUSTRY.

27

28

CLASSROOM LEARNING

CLASSROOM BASED LEARNING IS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IN OUR EDUCATION. Students will learn important business management theory in the areas of marketing, financial management, accounting, human resources, economics as well as general education areas such as languages, information technology (IT), psychology and more. Project-based learning is the teaching method used in most disciplines at Les Roches Jin Jiang, as this learning method encourages students to ask questions and discover answers. Depending on the subject, students carry out academic projects individually or as a part of a team. Project topics have a practical nature and the results of the research are applicable to real-life situations, e.g. planning and organizing one of the college’s annual events, designing a marketing campaign, developing a restaurant concept. The usage of technology is also integrated in the learning process, as students are required to have fluency in technology to navigate and analyze a vast store of information. Student are assessed through tests, exams, individual and group written reports, presentation creation and delivery. The practice of various teaching methods helps not only to improve students’ critical thinking and academic skills through referencing theoretical knowledge, but also develops their leadership and soft skills, such as collaboration, problem solving, working in a team, confidence, and innovative thinking. These are essential skills for life and a successful career. Developing future leaders: Students can further develop leadership abilities by being elected as “class delegate” by classmates, or running a student activity club in order to gain valuable expertise in entrepreneurship and negotiation at the college.

29

GAIN CONFIDENCE

30

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

LEARNING RESOURCES CLASSROOMS AND LIBRARY There are 30 classrooms, equipped with digital projectors and white boards, all necessary for practicing presentations in front of classmates and the teacher. SMART board interactive whiteboards have been installed in three classrooms. This provides a better, more interactive learning experience for Touchstone classes as part of the Hospitality Preparatory Program offered through cooperation with our partner Cambridge University Press. Students’ learning success is linked to their easy access to information. Students have access to the library, which houses Hospitality Industry related resources. This is where they acquire the essential life skill of understanding how to learn independently. Our librarian is available to help students to find their way around. In addition, students have access to online databases, consisting of thousands of journals and publications, which are extremely useful for research projects.

INFORMATION TECHOLOGY Information technology plays an important role throughout the education at Les Roches Jin Jiang. From the start of the program, computers are the basic working tool in the study process during which students develop very strong computer skills as well as obtain a strong knowledge of software and hardware widely used in hospitality.

31

32

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND EVERY JOB IN HOSPITALITY BEFORE YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO MANAGE A TEAM.

THE KITCHEN - WHERE YOU WILL LEARN MORE THAN HOW TO COOK You may not be planning a career as a chef, but working in a kitchen will teach you how to handle hot and stressful situations as you gain knowledge about all the operational processes of a food and beverage establishment. You will work closely with the chef and culinary instructor to prepare meals each day and, in doing so, gain a practical understanding of how a professional kitchen works. Important skills such as behavior, presentation, efficiency and teamwork will be learned in this hands-on part of your education. You will also work in the stewarding department, to understand the importance of back of house operations to help the whole operation run smoothly. You will experience the principle of ‘learning by doing’ as you attend theory classes about the origins of ingredients and plate presentation, and then put into practice in the kitchen what you have just learned. You will have the support of professionals teaching and supervising you, but you will do all the work, which is assessed by your professor afterwards. This is hands-on learning at its best and will give you leadership skills and confidence.

33

THE ROOMS - WHERE YOU WILL DISCOVER WHAT 5-STAR SERVICE IS To understand great service, it is critical to learn the art of making guests feel welcome. In Room Division classes, students will perform the various roles of the front office clerk, manager, cashier, and hotel guests at the purpose-built front desk. This gives them opportunity to practice the skill of welcoming guests successfully and completing administrative duties. In addition, students will be instructed in the art of housekeeping by making up beds and managing a mock guest room. You will learn specific industry computer software programs as well as planning tools and yield management techniques.

THE SERVICE - LEARN TO STAND IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES You will work in all of our restaurants on campus, receiving a variety of experiences by completing job rotations in different positions. The “Principles of Bar and Beverage Operations” class will teach you about wines and how to mix up a great cocktail. You may find it challenging at first, but faculty members and fellow students will support you. You will soon gain confidence and learn the styles that are practiced across all the food and beverage venues.

34

REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE

THROUGH INTERNSHIPS INTERNSHIPS PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN OUR PROGRAMS. EXPERIENCE IN A PROFESSIONAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT GIVES YOU THE CHANCE TO PUT INTO PRACTICE AND CONSOLIDATE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE LEARNED DURING YOUR STUDIES. THE INTERNSHIP IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO: ◥◥

FURTHER DEVELOP YOUR INTERPERSONAL, ENTREPRENEURIAL AND MANAGERIAL SKILLS.

◥◥

WORK INTERNATIONALLY IN AT LEAST 2 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. OF COURSE, NATIONALITY AND VISA REQUIREMENTS MAY HAVE AN IMPACT ON WHERE YOU CAN WORK: RESTRICTIONS ARE DETERMINED BY THE COUNTRY’S GOVERNMENT VISA AND WORK PERMIT POLICIES AS WELL AS LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS.
