Pudong – literally meaning “East Bank” – refers to the area of Shanghai at the east of Huangpu River. Until the 1990s it was an area of wharfs and warehouses. Since then it has become the most modern and futuristic part of the city, hosting major finance and trade companies, the Shanghai Stock Exchange and many well-known buildings such as the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Building, the Shanghai World Financial Center and, most recently, the 2nd highest skyscraper in the world: Shanghai Tower.

Founded in 1882, the Jade Buddha Temple is one of the most beautiful in Shanghai. Here you can learn about all the elements that make up a traditional Buddhist temple: the Chamber of Four Heavenly Kings, the Grand Hall, the Buddha Chamber and its courtyards. East Nanjing Road is one of the world’s busiest shopping streets with Shanghai’s oldest and largest department stores. At the end you can see The Bund, the 5

waterfront area in central Shanghai. It’s a spectacular line up of 1920s-to-50s buildings in their original Art Deco, Eclecticism and Neo-Classical styles.

The Yangtze River flows for 6,300 km from the glaciers of Tibet to the East China Sea just off Shanghai, making it the longest river in China (and all of Asia) and the 3rd longest river in the world. 20% of China’s GDP depend on the Yangtze River. Chongming, an island just north of Shanghai, is China’s third largest island abundant with rural and natural sceneries, parks, wetlands and eco-villages. You can’t experience China without tasting its tea! The origin of Chinese Tea dates back almost 5,000 years. The legends says that Emperor Shen Nong was boiling some water when some leaves fell from a nearby tree and made the water taste delicious. Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and has a population of around 9 million inhabitants (urban area), totally 21 million in the entire metropolitan area. It was the capital of the Southern Song dynasty from 1132 to 1276 AD. It was belived to be the largest city in the world from 1180 to 1315 AD. The Song Dynasty Town is a theme park based on the culture of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Combining realistic and imaginary elements with the 7

natural scenery of the West Lake, the Town fully displays the prosperous scenes of the Song Dynasty with performances, markets and temples.

Lingyin Temple (Temple of the Soul’s Retreat) is one of the largest and impressive Buddhist temples in China. It contains numerous pagodas and grottoes. Most strikingly, on the way to the temple the Feilai Feng will surprise you with grotesque rocks and over 470 statues of Buddha carved in the rock. Just 2 km from the Temple, the West Lake, with its beautiful natural scenery, is Hangzhou’s best-known attraction.

A popular tourist destination, Zhouzhuang is one of the best-preserved water towns that are so distinctive of this area of China. The Shanghai Museum is a museum of ancient Chinese art built in 1996. It has a collection of over 120,000 pieces of ancient bronze, ceramics, calligraphy, furniture, jades, seals and sculptures. Perfect to get a glimpse of Chinese history. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece, designed in the shape of an ancient bronze cooking vessel called a ding. Located in the earth of Shanghai’s Old City, Yuyuan Garden was first conceived in 1559. Spread across 2 hectares (5 acres), you can learn here the most 13

beautiful characteristics of Chinese-style gardens: rockeries, ponds, pavilions and towers.

Xintiandi Xintiandi is an area of reconstituted traditional mid-19th century Shikumen (“stone gate”) houses on narrow alleys. It is now a popular car-free shopping, eating and entertainment district of Shanghai. In Xintiandi you can also visit the site of the first congress of the Communist Party of China as well as the Shikumen Open House Museum.

Q: What is the ‘Summer Study Tour Program’? A: The ‘Summer Study Tour Program’ is a program in which students take part in cross-cultural understanding activities (3 hours a day) in Shanghai and the surrounding area (Yangtze River delta). Students will visit hot spots in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Zhouzhuang. Guided by experienced Les Roches Jin Jiang teachers, students will gain a deep understanding of Chinese culture, while enjoying the unique beauty of East China - the most developed and prosperous area in China. Q: When does the summer program take place? A: The program activities will start on Sunday the 10th of July, 2016 and will finish on Wednesday, the 20th of July 2016. Official arrival date and check-into the hotel is Saturday the 19th of July, 2016. The official departure date and check-out from the hotel is Thursday, the 21st of July, 2016. Q: What is the minimum age requirement to attend this summer program? A: Students must be minimum 16 years old. Q: What are the language requirements to attend this summer program? A: Students must demonstrate English language proficiency: IELTS 4.0 and above, or equivalent English qualification. Q: Who are the supervisors for this summer program? A: Students will be supervised by qualified English speaking teachers of Les Roches Jin Jiang throughout this entire program. These qualified teachers are Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) approved and Certified Mandarin Trainer (CMT) approved. Q: Why should I spend 11 days in Mainland China? A: The benefits of spending time in China are considerable: the opportunity to learn about the unique Chinese culture and learn the basics of the most spoken language in the world – Mandarin; unique hospitality experience through communication with local people, LRJJ faculty and industry professionals; the development of self-reliance; the enjoyment of travelling; and change of one’s pace of life. Upon completion of this program, you will gain the first-hand experience of living and studying in China. This summer program will sharpen your knowledge and broaden your horizons, while developing your international understanding and career network. Q: What are the living and travel arrangements for this summer program? A: Students will stay in five-star international brand hotels such as Hyatt and Sheraton in addition to staying in a uniquely designed local boutique hotel such as Jin Jiang Metropolo Hotel. Summer program participants will enjoy a mix of Western and famous local Chinese food. Students will be travelling in a comfortable air-conditioned bus and an English speaking tour guide will accompany them. The program is taught and organized by experienced LRJJ teachers. 16


Q: What will the cost of the summer program cover? A: The cost of the summer program will cover all cross-cultural understanding activities, hotel accommodation at double occupancy*, meals (3 times a day), and transportation within China. It is suggested that students bring some extra pocket money, for any additional personal travel and gift purchases. *A single hotel room is available at extra charge of 900 USD. Q: What is the weather like in Shanghai – Hangzhou - Suzhou – Zhouzhuang in July? A: The weather is hot, with a temperature of around 30-35°c. The weather may be humid and even wet at this time of year, so thin clothing and sandals will be necessary, along with sunscreen and an umbrella. The dress code for the entire trip is casual/ smart casual. Q: How can I get a visa for China to cover the duration of this summer program? A: Students of the summer program will be required to apply for and enter Mainland China with a short-term Student (X2) Visa, which is issued to those visiting China for studies for a period of less than 6 months. •The cost of the program is 2,600 USD and it should be paid by the 9th of May, 2016. Bank account details can be found on the application form. After the LRJJ Finance department has received the program fee payment, they will issue the receipt which LRJJ Admissions will forward to the student, in addition to informing them of the date when the visa support documents will be sent to their mailing address. • The required visa support documents - the unique JW202 form and a visa invitation letter - will be sent by registered mail to the student. • The student should then make an inquiry at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their country of residence for the list of documents required to apply for a Student (X2) visa. Important: should the student wish to apply for the Student (X2) visa in a country other than their home country, they must check their eligibility with the Chinese Consulate/Embassy in the selected country of application. • The student should then make an appointment at their Chinese Consulate/Embassy, and submit all required documentation. The visa will then be fixed inside the student’s passport. The passport itself should be valid for the time period of at least 6 months from the start of the summer program. • If the student resides outside of Mainland China, it will be compulsory for the student to have a health insurance plan that covers the duration of the trip. Health insurance is a requirement by law in the P.R. China and will be at the student’s expense. Terms & Conditions Force Majeure – Les Roches Jin Jiang Summer Program 2016 is subject to changes due to unpredictable and unforeseen circumstances and events beyond Les Roches Jin Jiang’s control. Les Roches Jin Jiang maintains the right to modify the program accordingly and will not be obliged to refund any fees in such cases. Enrollments & Cancellations – Les Roches Jin Jiang Summer Program 2016 will run only if a minimum of 10 participants enroll by the deadline date (9th of May, 2016). If the program is cancelled, you will be notified no later than 1 week after the deadline of application (i.e., not later than 16th of May, 2016) and a full refund will be provided. 17
