Water Witch Facts •90 feet long and 18 feet wide •Captain Jahaziel built the Water Witch in 1832 hoping to sell it to the Champlain Transportation Company; however, he couldn’t. •The Champlain Transportation Company bought The Water Witch from Captain Sherman in 1836 for $14,000 •The Water Witch carried mostly cargo •The Water Witch once was a steamboat, but was later converted into a schooner because there were so many steamers •The Water With was completed in 1832 •It was built in Fort Cassin, Vermont •The boat weighed 107 tons •The speed was 8 miles per hour •The master is captain Jahaziel Sherman


•The Water Witch was converted to a commercial schooner because there were too many steamboats in service on Lake Champlain. The owners pulled the engine and the boiler out of the boat.

•The ship’s captain was Captain Thomas Mock

•Captain Thomas Mock had three children and a wife on the boat


The Water Witch came upon a squall not far from the Otter Creek when it was a Schooner.. It was carrying a load of iron ore and sank on April 26,1866‌.partly because it was weighed down. The captain, his wife, and two of their children were rescued by the crew of a passing sloop. His infant daughter went down in the schooner’s cabin. The Water Witch was discovered in 1977
