EL LONDON RUNWAY

EDITOR'S LETTER We're officially here: the start of the London Runway spring/summer events schedule!

As usual, we're kicking things off with the Face of London Runway. This is our most anticipated event of the year and also our longest-running, as we'll be working through all the stages from now until August. It's such an exciting process, and I invite you to both read all about it in the next few pages and enter if you're so inclined. You never know you could be our next cover star! Talking of cover stars, our bright and sunny cover was brought to you this month by the winner of our Lens of London Runway competition. Rosie Anderton has done such a great job of creating this rainbow-themed editorial, focusing on block brights (because when are block colours ever really out of style?).

I'm sure you'll join me in congratulating her on a fantastic editorial - and we hope her photography career goes from strength to strength from here on out. What's going on behind the scenes at

London Runway HQ? We've brought in (or brought back) a couple of team members who are joining us again on the advertising side of things. If you'd like to chat with them about getting yourself or your brand in our pages, you can find all the details in our media kit at londonrunway.co.uk/advertising.

We've also made some design tweaks this month that you probably won't even notice, but which are making our lives easier on the design side. It's always a blessing when a tricky part of the design gets solved, so props to our hardworking graphics department (er, I mean, person - since we just have Lauren in that area these days!) for getting that fixed. As for the rest, we're just excited and looking forward to the seasons ahead. This is where our year starts to get really busy, and it's so much fun - we wouldn't have it any other way!

bring you some gorgeous shows that were held beyond our shores. We're also returning, of course, to House of iKons, along with some other highlights from London Fashion Week,

We've got four beautiful New Faces in our model interview section, plus a new brand for you to meet later on in the issue. Don't miss flipping through our luxe-themed editorials for some fashion, styling, and beauty inspiration.

Join us on Instagram this month where we'll be teasing more Face of London Runway stuff, including introductory videos from our models who are entering to take part. You could be one of them if you head to londonrunway.co.uk now and fill in our entry form! That's all from me - see you next month with our pride-filled Rainbow Issue! Enjoy -

I'll let you get on in a minute with actually flipping through the pages of this issue. We've got some great content for you this week. We're traveling as far afield as Taipei and San Francisco to

LONDON RUNWAY

LAUNCHING THE FACE OF LONDON RUNWAY 2023 It’s incredible to think it’s already been a year – but here we go again! As we have every year since 2019, we’re looking for two models to be the Face of London Runway for the twelve months ahead. Our final selection of ten models will be invited to a public voting round, where their portraits taken by our photographers will be used for the final judging. The winners get to enjoy a photoshoot with their

2022 winner - Flinn

face on the cover of the magazine, and help with their modelling careers. Not only that, but we feature all of the runners-up in the pages of the magazine throughout the year and beyond! But wait - this year, there's a twist! We're bringing in a theme for the first time ever, and where better to look for inspiration than the title of the competition itself? We're looking for

the best FACE - this time, there will be no catwalk element. If you aspire to be a beauty, jewellery, or portrait model, this is your year! As always, we’re putting out a virtual casting call for the first round. This means you can enter from anywhere around the UK – and even anywhere around the world, so long as you would be able to travel back to London for the semi-final and to claim your prize!

2022 - Pippa

We are throwing the doors wide open once again, so absolutely anyone can enter – no matter your age (so long as you are over 18), height, weight, skin colour, religious background, nationality, disability, gender identity – you get the picture! In previous years, our finalists and winners included people from various racial backgrounds, plus-sized, androgynous, over-50s, LGBTQ+, and petite models, so don’t hold yourself back. We will have two categories open for entry: beauty and editorial. You can enter whichever category feels right to you, or even enter both if you wish. Beauty models are most likely to showcase breath-taking makeup and fresh-faced skincare with less of a focus on clothing and accessories. Editorial models, on the other hand, might model jewellery and hair accessories in a more fashion-centric shoot, with eye-catching clothing items to frame their face. After making our first round of selections and getting your forms filled out, we invite everyone we think we could work with to Zoom rounds which are fast-paced, fun, and accessible from wherever you might be. We head into the semi-final with an in-person session to whittle it down to just ten of you for the final.

2020 - Orpheus

When you enter, we’ll be asking you to submit the following: – A headshot. If you don’t have this, get someone to take it for you on their phone – or stand in front of a mirror and do a selfie. No makeup, plain hair, and no jewellery (we will make an exception for religious beliefs) – A short landscape-oriented video in which you say the following: “Hi, London Runway. My name is ______ and I’m going to be the Face of London Runway 2023!” (again, filming it on just a phone is fine!) – A filled-out form listing your name, physical measurements, contact details, and other information that we’ll need in order to consider you

PAGE 5

There will be no charge for entry at any stage of the casting process. Therefore, the only thing holding you back is yourself! Make sure to get your entries in before the closing date on the 27th May 2023! AT A GLANCE Free to enter, and open to anyone over the age of 18 All sizes, genders, races, religions, disabilities, and backgrounds considered Two categories, beauty and editorial – you choose what’s comfortable to you! Enter with two images, a short video, and your personal stats Winners will be our cover stars and featured in the magazine throughout 2023/24!

NEW BUSINESS MEG J GARDNER

Name of company: Meg J Gardner Type of business: Bespoke and Couture Fashion Design Location: West Yorkshire

A very small but highly dedicated team. Meg works with a variety of phenomenal creatives to try raise awareness for slow, sustainable and ethical fashion.

How long has the company been running? The company has been running for a couple years now, from the release of their first collection Tempus 360 in 2021, the brand has grown from strength to strength with showcases during London Fashion Week, to gracing the front covers of magazines and more. MJG have now released several collections, but Meg says Tempus still remains one of her favourites along side their most recent collection, Eleutheria, which is a couture bridal collection inspired by the historical and romantic muses of Shakespeare’s women.

What are your company values? Ethical. Slow. Stylish. Meg is focusing her attention on blazing a trail to re-establish fashion as timelessly elegant yet contemporarily modern, in a responsible way without sacrificing on style. Combining intricately crafted textiles to sculpt beautifully original and unique styles and garments, Meg's work highlights slow fashion at its best - from her sustainable and circular design concepts to her “made-toorder” policy.

Where did the idea come from? During her placement year at university, Meg was given the opportunity to work alongside several companies, all over the country. The experience was really valuable and taught her a lot in terms of how the industry works, but the main thing it revealed was how unethical the industry can be. From overproduction to unpaid labour, it was really eye-opening to see that what’s presented to consumers isn’t an accurate representation of what happens behind the scenes, and Meg wants to change that. She established Meg J Gardner to make a stand against fast fashion, by offering a more personal, sustainable and ethical approach to fashion, and has committed to creating high quality, slow fashion garments that are made with meticulous attention to detail and care. Meg has gained a reputation for creating beautiful and elegant pieces, often featuring intricate artisan details such as hand beading and appliqué. Her established and quintessential design style is becoming easily recognisable amongst the ever changing scene of fast fashion. Currently, how many people work for the business?

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business? Meg’s key piece of advice is to network. There is a huge community of phenomenal creatives out there, and they have a lot of knowledge and advise to give so connect with those willing to share But remember to respect other creatives and more importantly respect their work and their craft; during her time in the industry, Meg has had people try abuse her work purely for their own good, so Meg emphasises ensuring all your networking is a two way street and that those you are working with are there for the right reasons. When both sides benefit, that’s when the best and most meaningful connections are made, and those are the people who will support and encourage you to succeed with building your business. Where do you hope the company will be in 5 years time? Wow! We have a lot going on behind the scenes both for our amazing clients, locally and nationally, as well as having a few exciting creative projects we’ve been invited to be a part of. For now we can’t say too much about but you can keep up to date with our most recent work and collections on our Instagram account @meg.j.gardner.design
