EL LONDON RUNWAY

EDITOR'S LETTER The time has come again: we must salute the valiant efforts of all the entrants of the Face of London Runway 2023 - and now crown the winners! You can find out all about who won this year's contest in the next few pages. We're also launching another competition this issue. We've seen our new faces of the year, and now it's time to find the photographer we'd like to feature for the year ahead. The Lens of London Runway is open now (more details on that in a few pages, too!).

With August comes much anticipation towards September, and all the glittering and glamorous fashion that it brings. We're giving you a VIP sneak peek of the action this month with our House of iKons preview feature - check out all the info about who's going to be there! That list includes us, by the way so we'll look forward to seeing you there. If you find yourself on the front row, give us a wave.

The whole world seems to be awash in pink right now thanks to Barbie. You'll be pleased to know we have resisted the temptation to simply give into the trend (look! lilac and teal!), with this issue taking on more of a floral theme. We're taking pointers from the blooming rose on how to be elegant, beautiful, and wild - watch out for those thorns if you try to hold us down.

You can check out some gorgeous floral fashion later on in the issue, and our style guide does, yes, contain just a smidgeon of pink if you really must have it. Elsewhere, we're celebrating Graduate Fashion Week once again with a whole bushel of talented new designers. Remember, you saw them here first. When they're big in five years, and you can claim ownership of one of their earliest pieces, you better give us all the credit. What else is new? Well, we've been noticing a tiny bit of a positive

trend as a result of the inescapable AI "art" that has been flooding all our favourite photo sharing sites. Now that it's possible to generate a flawlesslyskinned yet slightly plastic beauty at the touch of a button, it looks like the age of spending hours Photoshopping girls into literal Barbie dolls is over. Why bother? If you spend hours casting, shooting, and editing a model, you better believe you want people to know it was all real. And if you make it look like AI, well, no one's going to know the difference. Take heed, those in other creative industries. Would you notice if this Editor's Letter was AI-generated? Probably not, because you don't read it that closely. But you're sure as hell going to know it when I write something unique, original, and sassy enough that a robot could never. I'm off to AI-edit my profile photo to look like Anna Wintour. See you later!

LONDON RUNWAY

2023

WINNERS! We announce the winners of the Face of London Runway competition for this year, and take you on the journey that we've traveled so far... What a journey we've all been on! This has been an incredible year for the Face of London Runway. We had a new record of 853 entrants in the first round, making it all the more difficult for us to get down to the final stage. After choosing just 100 - an eighth! - of all our entries to go through to the next round, we met them all over Zoom. With fun posing challenges, lots of chat about the industry, and advice for our budding models, we were able to get to know them a little bit. Now came the first of the really hard decisions: choosing which of our contestants would make it to the semifinal, held in Shoreditch at Chocolate Studios. The top 40 represented just 4% of our overall entrants, and they weren't done yet. Over the course of one jam-packed day, they met all of their fellow semifinalists, posed for a classic portrait, styled themselves for a jewellery challenge (wearing jewellery provided graciously by Rove London), did their own pearl sticker makeup for a beauty challenge, took and posted selfies, and even shared a video answering some questions about the event and why they wanted to win. As the dust settled from this round, we realised we'd made a terrible mistake. Signing ourselves up to choose just TEN people from this bunch? What

were we thinking?! Nonetheless, the decision had to be made. It's worth noting also that this final was our most international yet. We had models come to take part from Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and the Netherlands! Add to that the models who have settled in London from other countries before taking part in the contest, and we had such a diverse bunch that it was incredible to see.

This year was not without controversy, as some false voting patterns were quickly detected by our team. Rest assured that our final scores reflect that reality, with points docked or disqualifications made when we could see that the votes were not correct. We asked our contestants to be honest and open with us, and reminded them many times that behaviour was one of the aspects we were monitoring, so all's fair when it comes to the results. And what were the results?

Finally, we narrowed it down to just that final ten: Ana Julia Medrano Cerna, Corey Lane, Dan Holland, Essence Shomari Howells, Ignacio Ferrer, Joe Fox, Julie Bouttier, Munashe Stephanie Shumba, Raphael Martin, and Sage Kim (in first-name alphabetical order only). During the whole of the competition, they had each been accrueing scores from both our judges and some factors that were based in data, not opinion. These included judgements on their ability to follow instructions and complete assignments fully, the quality and variety of images they completed in the semi-final, their attitude when interacting with their fellow semifinalists, their posts on social media, and more. We added scores from our judges (Chief Editor and Head Judge Rhiannon D'Averc, photographers Mrityunjoy Mitra and Fil Mazzarino, and our Advertising Manager/event assistant Amber Johnson). The final piece of the puzzle was... you! The last round of the competition was the public voting round, in which we asked you to vote for your favourites across Instagram and Facebook.

PAGE 4

Yes, we know you've been waiting patiently to find out! If you turn to the next pages you will see images of our winners and runners-up. As always, we've chosen two winners, with two runners-up each; this is a slight throwback to our previous menswear/womenswear categories, but as our theme was 'face' this year, we've mixed everybody up and instead made them beauty and jewellery winners. Those category winners are: BEAUTY Winner - Corey Lane Runners-up - Julie Bouttier and Raphael Martin JEWELLERY Winner - Essence Shomari Howells Runners-up - Ana Julia Medrano Cerna and Dan Holland We'll be bringing you front covers with the winners' cover shoots soon! Make sure to keep an eye out across the year or shots of the semi-finalists, podcast interviews with the winners, and more!

LONDON RUNWAY Just a few highlights on some of our designers showcasing: Stephan Russell is an ultra luxurious clothing and accessories line founded in 2021 in New York. Having an eclectic approach through working as a fashion model, designer’s assistant, accessory buyer, design consultant and eventually independent designer was a decade in the making. Coming from a family of antique dealers and interior designers, the exposure to fine textiles and original aesthetics was an early education that would create a discerning eye. Stephan Russell began by walking on Saville Row in London late one evening during Fashion Week, which gave way to the inspiration to use British fabric for an American brand.

The first blazer sample branched into dress shirts, made by the same workshop Hollywood film makers use for their period pieces. He is continuously inspired when visiting London, New York & Los Angeles, his favourite trio of style capitals.

At the young age of 18 years, Zaira Christie is launching their second couture collection on our platform. Zaira is studying music at Oxford University. With musical creative talent and a flair for fashion, Zaira’s collection will bring fashion and music together with their creations.

LONDON RUNWAY Charlotte Geschier, creator of AU10TIC, works under the stage name Miss C and has been active as a model in the art and fashion world, both at home and abroad. Those experiences taught her how hard those worlds are and how authenticity often loses out to the artificial ideal image determined by the few. Fashion determines what to wear and how to look. The emperor's clothes, but in reverse. Clothes without an emperor. Authenticity is under attack. Nothing is what it seems. Charlotte founded the non-profit organisation JC Creative House, with the aim of having a safe environment to choose one's own authentic creative direction and thus be a role model for authenticity. This segment questions Who are you? Who are you when you are not seen? Who are you when you are being seen? Are you authentic? AU10TIC is an artistic project at the crossroads of art and fashion that addresses the issue of authenticity, in particular what the challenges are of expressing yourself as a human being (through clothing or body adornment) in relation to your environment. AU10TIC talks about the importance of authenticity for ourselves and for society as a whole. To deliver the message of AU10TIC, Charlotte designed six characters, six "beauties". Each character expresses a question and confronts the viewer with how we view and experience each other. The Trapped Beauty is a character inspired by the Paduang, the “giraffe women". Trapped in tradition and culture? Refine, reshape or mutilate are the questions being asked. The (Western) Botox Beauty is a persona that refers to the supposed ideals of beauty pursued with the extreme use of botulinum toxin (botox) to hide ageing skin and/or change body shapes. The Question is , are we denying reality? The Oriental Beauty is a character inspired by Asian culture. Bound "lotus" feet, black teeth as a beauty ideal. The relativity of aesthetics is a subject here, as much as the pressure of tradition.

The Persian Beauty, inspired by the Middle East, Charlotte asks where the urge to decorate ourselves with gold and exclusive adornments comes from. Are we showing our power? Does it give us power? The Tribal Beauty; Two characters are inspired by tribal cultures. To emphasise spirituality and (super) faith. The models have characteristics of the Apatani, Mursi, Karo and the Maori.

Ms. Ho Tran Da Thao, fashion entrepreneur and creative soul based out of Singapore and Saigon, is the driving spirit behind the Tsafari brand of womenswear and shoes. An alumnus of Douglas Mawson Institute of Technology (TAFE SA), her journey in fashion began with winning the Mercedes-Benz Asia Fashion Award 2004, representing Vietnam. She received the International Young Fashion Entrepreneur Award 2008 from The British Council, and was awarded the VGAC Australian Alumni Award for Media, Culture and Arts 2014. She has had wide industry exposure, having worked in Itochu-Prominent Corporation and some well-known Vietnamese fashion companies. She is the Founder and Creative Director of the Tsafari Label. Her love of culture and cature brings a unique identity and meaningful stories into her TSAFARI designs and collections. She aims to preserve Vietnamese hand-made techniques and traditional culture by ensuring a sustainable work for women artisans and seamstresses as she continues to expand her creative vision, soaking in creative influences from across the world.

We’ll be sharing the day on our socials and invite you to do the same for your own followers! After our shoot day, you will receive 5 edited shots of your choice, yours to use as you wish. They make great portfolio boosters and above all, memories of a fantastic, fun-filled experience. London Runway Shoot Days cover a 7-hour period on the day. You have the option to join us at any time and stay for up to 2 hours as your timeslot. We set a maximum of 6 models to be in the group at all times, so you won’t have to compete for space. You will, however, get to network with up to 5 of your peers as well as an official London Runway staff photographer! For our next two events, the Chief Editor herself is behind the lens.

Upcoming dates:

23rd September - Shoreditch 14th October - Highgate Wood

NEW BUSINESS SKY STITCHED DESIGNS

Name of company: Sky Stitched Designs Type of business: Fiber Artist Location: Philadelphia, PA

Sky Stitched Designs is committed to fashion inclusivity and accessibility. The brand is for those who like innovative designs that bring anime inspirations to reality. Becoming a Sky Stitched Doll is not just a title, it's a lifestyle! Professionalism, Uniqueness, Sexy, Sweet, and a “YES” mindset when it comes to fashion accessibility!

How long has the company been running? Est. 2022 Where did the idea come from? Welcome to Sky Stitched Designs, crochet work by yours truly! My name is Bre and my granny taught me how to crochet when I was a little girl (so I have over 10 years of experience!). Crocheting for me is really just a creative outlet where I get to express myself. I want others to be able to look and feel their best in crochet pieces I specifically designed. Currently, how many people work for the business? Just me but I do have brand ambassadors aka my “Sky Stitched Dolls” What are your company values?

Sky Stitched Designs is not just a crochet brand; it is a lifestyle brand that embraces the fusion of fashion and anime inspirations. Our mission is to offer high-quality, handcrafted crochet products that cater to individuals who seek fashion that reflects their love for anime culture and appreciate the craftsmanship of crochet. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business? JUST DO IT! Art is an expression of human creativity. Where do you hope the company will be in 5 years time? Wow! In 5 years I hope to see my designs worn by celebrities and in stores for all!
