Como mi pelo es bastante fino, las extensiones me van muy bien. Me dan volumen y la opción de llevarlas más largas o más cortas. Colocar extensiones nuevas requiere mucho trabajo, pero aquí lo hacen muy rápido. Mi estilista favorita, Charlotte, en tres horas. Normalmente suelo venir cada tres o cuatro meses. Como me gusta el ambiente, para mí también es una manera de relajarme.

A mi pelo, le suelo dedicar unos 15 minutos al día. Para mi es muy importante llevarlo perfecto.

Puede ser que vengas con una idea de lo que te vas a hacer, pero la persona que te corta el pelo debe tener libertad para añadir su toque personal. Así que, como cliente habitual, confío en mi peluquero. Empecé ofreciéndome como modelo para Kinki, y luego me puse a estudiar estilismo con ellos. Desde entonces, hace ahora cuatro años que trabajo aquí. Básicamente suelo inspirarme en lo que veo por la calle.

Hoy cuando vine tenía el pelo mucho más largo por delante y más voluminoso. Chris lo ha cortado, aunque antes ya llevaba los dos colores. Para mí, el pelo es muy importante y me encanta poder experimentar con él. Un corte de pelo determinado puede subirte el ánimo o estropear tu propio estilo a la hora de vestir. Dedico 20 minutos de mi día a lavar, acondicionar, peinar y dar estilo a mi pelo. Lo llevo de muchas maneras. ¡Una vez lo llevé naranja chillón, blanco y negro!

Tessa Harts, 28. Toni & Guy, Van Baerlestraat 7. Una amiga mía se tiñó el pelo aquí y vio cómo trabajaba Ronald, uno de sus estilistas. Le gustó tanto que al verla me dijo que tenía que ir. Hace cuatro años que vine por primera vez y desde entonces no he dejado de venir. Suelo visitarla tres o cuatro veces al año. Ronald me hace un corte diferente cada vez, pero siempre le digo que no me gusta muy corto. Mi pelo es muy fino, por eso a veces fantaseo con tenerlo largo y con tirabuzones gruesos como Jessica Biel. En ocasiones puntuales, me pongo rulos en un intento de conseguir un efecto similar.

nos cuenta a dónde llevaría a un héroe suyo Abelardo Linares, poeta, editor y dueño de la librería Renacimiento en Sevilla, queda en su ciudad con Francisco Brines, el poeta valenciano. “Aunque no creo demasiado en los héroes, ni siquiera con minúscula, si tuviera que elegir a uno sería el poeta valenciano Francisco Brines. Lo descubrí a los 19 años, en 1971, leyendo Aún no, libro suyo que cambió mi forma de entender la poesía. Admiro al poeta y a la vez a la persona, al amigo, que conocí en 1978, en Sevilla. Para mi generación Brines representa lo que Vicente Aleixandre fue para la generación del valenciano: la personificación de la figura del poeta al tiempo que un amigo cercano y un lector generosísimo. Si Francisco visitara por primera vez Sevilla, lo llevaría a la calle Mármoles, junto a la casa en que vivió el poeta Luis Cernuda, a ver las gigantescas columnas romanas que son lo poco que queda de la antigua Hispalis. Callejearíamos por la descascarillada Sevilla medieval para acercarnos a Cabeza del rey don Pedro, que tantas veces recorrí de niño camino del colegio, y le enseñaría la hornacina con la cabeza en piedra de don Pedro el Justiciero que aún permanece allí, tan llena de polvo como de leyenda. Y nos sentaríamos junto a los cipreses de unos de los más recoletos jardines del Alcázar evocados por la nostalgia en el Ocnos cernudiano. Ambos charlaríamos de lo antiguo, de lo de siempre, de lo casi eterno: del paso de la vida, la amistad y la poesía.”

Abelardo Linares, poet, editor and owner of the Renacimiento bookshop in Seville, takes a walk in his city with Francisco Brines, the Valencian poet “Although I don’t really believe in heroes, not even with a lower case, if I had to choose one it would be the Valencian poet Francisco Brines. I discovered him when I was 19 years old, in 1971, when I read his book Aún no, which changed the way I regarded poetry. I admire the poet as well as the person and friend I met in 1978 in Seville. For my generation Brines represents what Vicente Aleixandre was to his: the embodiment of the poet, at the same time as being a close friend and an extremely generous reader. If Francisco visited Seville for the first time, I would take him to calle Mármoles, next to the house where the poet Luis Cernuda lived, to see
the giant Roman columns that are some of the last remnants of the old Hispalis. We’d hang around the peeling streets of the medieval part of Seville until we reach calle Cabeza del Rey Don Pedro, which I passed through so many times as a boy on my way to school. I would show him the vaulted niche with the head of Don Pedro el Justiciero carved in stone that is still there, covered in as much dust as he is steeped in legend. And we would sit down by the cypresses in one of the most secluded gardens of the Alcazar, recalled nostalgically in Cernuda’s Ocnos. We would chat about the same old, the usual, the nearly eternal: the passing of life, friendship and poetry.”

It tries to portray the unique and varied nature of bohemian life in the city. Thus, night spots have a special significance in the movie. The film was largely shot in the imaginary ‘Taberna de los dramáticos’, a recreation of a typical bohemian pub in Santiago. It was inspired by Galo Dóuro pub (Rúa da Conga, 14), run for the last 40 years by the extravagant Xurxo Hombre, who also inspired the character of Chete Lera in the film. The beginning and ending of the film were shot outside A Reixa (Rúa tras Salomé, 1). Its claim to fame is that it features the best sixties music in the rich panorama of the city’s music scene. And to grab a bite, I recommend the restaurant Asesino (Plaza de la Universidad), whose tables have hosted not just the whole film crew, but renowned writers such as Lorca, Hemingway, Valle-Inclán (they still have his table), Torrente and Cela. The protagonists, Luis Tosar and Nora Tschirner, amble around magical Compostela, far from the usual tourist routes. Important locations are in marvellous places like Granxa do Sexto, a beautiful park with four small natural lakes, where we shot the scene ‘the rave of the end of the world’; Bonaval, a park situated in an old cemetery and designed by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza and the landscape architect Isabel Aguirre. Another place that has been portrayed in this and other films in recent years is the old Mercado de Abastos (Rúa das Ameas). Founded in 1873 and reconstructed in 1941, it’s the second most frequented place after the Cathedral… there must be a reason.” ALFONSO ZARAUZA (Santiago, 1973) wrote and directed the film.

De este modo, los locales nocturnos adquieren una inusitada importancia. Gran parte del rodaje se efectuó en la imaginaria ‘Taberna de los dramáticos’, una recreación del prototipo de pub bohemio santiagués inspirado en el pub Galo Dóuro, (Rúa da Conga, 14) regentado desde hace más de 40 años por el extravagante Xurxo Hombre, que inspira también el personaje de Chete Lera en la película. Otro local recomendable, pues en su exterior se desarrolla el principio y el fin de la película, es A Reixa (Rúa tras Salomé, 1) que antes de pub fue una antigua taberna donde se rodaron escenas de La casa de la Troya. En la actualidad alardea de tener la mejor música sixtie del rico panorama noctámbulo de la ciudad. ISABEL COIXET (Barcelona, 1962), directora de cine, se licenció en Historia y ejerció como periodista algunos años. Rodó su primer largometraje, Cosas que nunca te dije, en 1996. Desde entonces ha rodado otras películas que la han situado en el escalafón más alto del cine español y ha entrado con fuerza en la escena internacional. Mi vida sin mí y La vida secreta de las palabras sucedieron a su primer filme. Elegy ha sido su primera gran producción norteamericana y está protagonizada por Ben Kingsley y Penélope Cruz. ISABEL COIXET (Barcelona, 1962), film director, has a degree in History and worked as a journalist for a few years. She filmed her first feature film, Things I Never Told You, in 1996. Her following films, My Life Without Me and The Secret Life of Words, have made her a name in Spanish cinema and she entered the international scene in full force. Elegy is her first big North American production, starring Ben Kingsley and Penélope Cruz.
No sé por qué la seducción está ligada a la femineidad. Creo que es una cuestión casi estadística, quiero decir que hay muchas más mujeres que hombres. Esto lo leí hace tiempo en un estudio antropológico y me hizo mucha gracia. Se supone que las mujeres deben competir por el hombre. Pero en la naturaleza también los leones compiten por la leona, ¿no? Las mujeres siguen siendo más misteriosas para mí porque somos más impredecibles. Y creo que esa cosa hormonal lunar tiene algo que ver, porque así como a los amigos los ves venir, las mujeres de repente te sorprenden. Tienen salidas de tono o cambios de comportamiento que me alucinan, pero no me parece mal. En este sentido, yo creo que nadie en el mundo puede explicarse, aparte de la atracción tópica del poder, qué ha visto Carla Bruni en ese señor. Es que a veces pienso, pero qué tío tan poco atractivo. ¿Qué le ha visto a ese mostrenco histérico que se viste fatal, que siempre lleva unas corbatas súper anchas? Carla Bruni no tiene ni que esforzarse en seducir. Pero probablemente no hay nada más seductor que alguien que no sabe que puede serlo. Alguien que no es consciente de eso es más seductor que alguien que va a piñón fijo. A mí desde luego los hombres que me han seducido es porque no tenían ninguna intención de hacerlo. Pese a mi experiencia, en el cine sigo siendo una gran espectadora. Para que una película me seduzca debe tener una coherencia interna que esté al margen de la bondad del guión o de la perfección de los actores. Hay algo, cuando un director tiene un punto de vista claro respecto a sus criaturas, que se nota. Cuando escribo no pienso ni en el público ni en mí. Me sumerjo en la trama y soy cada uno de los personajes. Y al final, si para mí suena auténtico, creíble y real, pienso que a alguien más le gustará. También me han seducido muchas ciudades, como Reijkiavic, Copenhage, París o Roma. En París igual he estado 100 veces, pero siempre encuentro algo que me gusta. Y Roma, con sus paredes desconchadas y los gatos... A pesar de la masa turística, si te pierdes por el Trastevere los turistas desaparecen.
I don’t know why seduction is linked to femininity. I think it’s a question of numbers; there are many more women in the world than men. I read this a while ago in an anthropological study and I found it funny. It seems that women have to compete for men. But in nature lions also compete for the lioness, don’t they? Women continue to be more mysterious for me, because we are more unpredictable. And I think that this lunar hormonal cycle thing has something to do with it. In the same way your male friends are more predictable, women will surprise you. They have mood shifts and changes of behaviour that fascinate me, but I don’t see it as negative. In this sense, I think that no one in the world can really explain, aside from the stereotypical attraction to power, what Carla Bruni sees in that man. At times I think: what an unattractive guy. What does she see in that hysterical dolt who dresses awfully, who always wears ties that are super wide? Carla Bruni doesn’t have to make any effort to seduce. But there’s probably nothing more seductive than someone who is unaware that they are. Someone who isn’t conscious of this is more seductive than someone who’s trying really hard. And of course the men who have seduced me were the ones who had no intention of doing so. Despite my experience, I continue to be a spectator at the movies. For a movie to seduce me it has to have an internal coherence apart from the quality of the script is and the perfection of the actors. There is something you can feel when a director has a clear vision about their creation. When I write I don’t think about the audience or about myself. I get into the plot and become every one of the characters. If it feels authentic, believable and real to me, I always think that other people will like it, too. Many cities have seduced me: Reykjavik, Copenhagen, Paris and Rome. I’ve been to Paris about a hundred times, but I always find something that I like. I like Rome a lot, with its flaking walls and the cats. And despite the mass of tourists, if you get lost in the streets of Trastevere the crowds just vanish. LING 21

“I’m not crazy about mussels,” Soledad explains, “but when I eat them in Brussels they taste glorious. Is that Jimmy Carter?” She throws the question out as she soaks her bread on her plate. Soledad sometimes also sees the dead. “On the wall, Mayer, on the wall,” she explains. “It sure is, the photo is signed,” I answer, my mouth full of french fries. Well, well, at Chez Léon we might even bump into Obama before we leave. “Order some more Moselle, as sang Jacques Brel,” she says, dramatising the rhyme. “I’m also going to order more mussels, since we’re in Brussels,” I play along with her. We arrived in the city the day before yesterday and we’ve had this meal three times, but who’s counting. I put my rigged blood pressure meter in my Mulberry, in case I catch her going too far and have to give her a little scare. After the meal, we visit one of Soledad’s favourite statues, Jeanneke Pis. It’s the feminine version of Manneken Pis, and of course it’s much more entertaining. “It’s as if Jeff Koons’ illegitimate son had created it. It’s a shame they don’t dress her up. I would have an early Mugler made for her,” she meditates while she primps her huge beehive, an homage to Fabiola of Belgium. Our trip to Brussels has one main objective: to visit Mini-Europe, a theme park at the foot of the Atomium that consists of the essential monuments and geography of our continent in miniature. Soledad has seen it several times, but she doesn’t seem to get enough of it. Her favourite part is the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the ticking of Big Ben, the mini-gondolas (“They should put hamsters in them with little striped shirts”) and the miniature wall of Berlin. All Lilliputian size, domesticated and adorable. “Marvellous! It’s the fifteen minutes of fame that Warhol had, but in tourism: in a quarter of an hour you can say you visited Europe.” “I should do something like this in the garden, Soledad,” I joke. She stares at me. “Mayer!” she squeezes my arm.

al guardia de seguridad, acceden al edificio por una ventana rota y, a continuación, suben sigilosamente al primer piso. Ante ellos se encuentra una habitación repleta de maquinaria antigua, cubierta de polvo. Una habitación donde el tiempo se ha detenido. Un suspiro corta el silencio. Han encontrado lo que estaban buscando. Estas dos personas no han entrado a robar ni a hacer el gamberro. Han venido porque quieren escapar del mundo tal y como lo conocemos, y descubrir esos espacios que están más allá de nuestro alcance, lugares cuya existencia ni siquiera es conocida por la mayoría. Son Exploradores Urbanos. “La Exploración Urbana es la investigación, documentación y creación de mapas de espacios prohibidos, de sitios a los que la gente normal se supone que no tiene acceso”, explica el explorador Sylvain Margaine -alias Slyv-. Estos lugares incluyen áreas de mantenimiento, túneles públicos, y, sobre todo, edificios abandonados de todo tipo: fábricas, castillos, estaciones de ferrocarril, hospitales e instituciones mentales. Se pueden encontrar en ciudades, pueblos o aislados en el campo. Están por todas partes. Lo que mueve al explorador es la atracción por ver algo que muy pocas personas consiguen ver, documentar fotográficamente surrealistas atmósferas y, ante todo, entrar en un mundo completamente distinto de nuestra realidad cotidiana. Porque, justo ahí, detrás de esta valla y pasando esa puerta, el tiempo se ha detenido.

rity guard, enter the building through a broken window and carefully make their way up to the first floor. Before them lies a room full of old machinery, covered in dust. A room where time has stood still. A sigh breaks the silence. They’ve found what they were looking for. The two people have not come to steal or vandalise. They have come because they want to escape their daily routine and discover the spaces that lie out of their reach, places whose existence isn’t even known to most people. They are Urban Explorers. “Urban Exploring is the research, documentation and mapping of forbidden spaces, places the normal public isn’t supposed to enter,” explains the explorer Sylvain Margaine alias “Slyv”. These places include maintenance areas, utility tunnels and, above all, abandoned buildings of all kinds: factories, castles, train stations, hospitals and mental institutions. They can be found in cities, villages or isolated in the countryside. They are everywhere. What drives the explorers is the attraction of seeing something few other people see, to document photographically the surrealistic atmosphere, and above all, to enter a world utterly distinct from our everyday reality. Because right there, past that fence and through that door, time has stood still.

Normalmente salgo una o dos veces al mes. Los sitios más interesantes son aquellos en los que, en caso de estar el sitio activo y en funcionamiento, nunca entrarías. The bigger and more photogenic a place, the more time you need: a ramshackle house can be photographed in half an hour, a big hospital or factory in good condition can call for various days. Normally I go out once or twice a month. The most interesting places are the ones that, if they were active and functioning, you would never visit. The most intriguing place I’ve ever been to is a chocolate factory that was totally intact, with all of the machinery, ovens and even the chocolate wrappers.”

Pasear tú solo por un edificio de cinco plantas completamente vacío, sin cruzarte con nadie, escuchando sólo el ruido del silencio es algo indescriptible. Imaginamos el lugar lleno de gente o en funcionamiento y lo comparamos mentalmente con la situación actual, cerrado y vacío. Es difícil de describir, pero lo entiendes cuando lo haces. Aporta muchas dosis de felicidad, serenidad, relax y calma. Otras veces aporta riesgo y miedo. Y el resultado es algo ‘adictivo’. Cuando estás allí, miras el lugar intentando obtener la mejor fotografía. Cuando la tienes, observas y piensas en lo que ves y en las sensaciones que te transmite. No se oye nada, no se ve a nadie y eso te sirve para evadirte, relajarte y reflexionar. Es una gran sensación.”

Being alone in a five-storey building that’s completely empty, without seeing anyone else, hearing only the noise of the silence, is indescribable. We imagine the place full of people or in operation and we mentally compare it to the current situation – closed and empty. It’s difficult to describe, but you get it when you are doing it. It brings you a huge dose of happiness, serenity, relaxation and calm. Other times it brings risk and fear. The result is addictive. When you’re there, you look at the place trying to get the best shot. When you take it, you observe and think about what you see and the sensations that it evokes in you. Es como un viaje en el tiempo: saltas un muro y detrás, el tiempo se ha detenido durante 30 años. Me atrae entrar en estos sitios que están más allá de los límites de los lugares comunes. Comencé a explorar y a hacer fotografías en octubre de 2006 cuando visité la estación de Canfranc, una enorme estación de ferrocarril en el norte de España, en la frontera con Francia, que se construyó a principios del siglo XIX y se cerró, tras un accidente, en 1970. Fue ahí donde cogí el virus de la exploración urbana. Ahora, hay veces que voy a explorar varias veces por semana. En la prisión de Carabanchel un tío trató de lanzarme un bloque de hormigón desde el 2º piso. Cayó al suelo a dos metros de donde me encontraba. Probablemente quería mi cámara de fotos. Entonces vino a por mí con otros cuatro tíos, pero me escondí en una de las celdas de la primera planta hasta que dejé de oírlos. El lugar más interesante que jamás he explorado fue una línea de ferrocarril olvidada en la Alemania del este, en la que había unos cuarenta trenes a vapor abandonados al paso del tiempo. Otro de estos lugares es un viejo instituto veterinario en Bruselas, repleto de frascos con partes de animales. It’s like timetravelling: you climb a wall and behind it, time has been standing still for 30 years. It attracts me to enter these places that are off limits to others. I started exploring and taking pictures in October 2006, when I visited Canfranc Estación, a huge train station in northern Spain, on the border with France. It was built in the early 1900s and closed after an accident in 1970. That’s when I caught the Urban Exploring bug. Now there are times when I go exploring almost every week. In Carabanchel prison a guy tried to drop a concrete block on me from the second floor. It hit the ground two metres from where I was standing. He probably wanted my camera. Then he came after me with four more guys, and I hid in one of the cells on the first floor until I couldn’t hear them anymore. The most interesting place I have ever explored was a forgotten railroad track in eastern Germany where about 40 steam trains were left to rot away. Another is an old veterinary school in Brussels that’s full of jars containing animal parts. It’s really creepy.” www.urban-travel.org

Estamos casi atrapados en la ciudad en que vivimos. Seguimos los caminos que nos indican y no tenemos la oportunidad de escapar de nuestra existencia cotidiana. Pero, cuando abres una puerta, saltas una valla o miras por un agujero y sales del mundo normal, estás explorando. De niño, mi padre siempre me llevaba a fábricas abandonadas. La pasión perduró. Pero mi motivación siempre se ha visto impulsada por el amor a la fotografía: antes de que las cosas se pudran, vamos a explorar y a fotografiarlo y así, preservamos nuestra herencia cultural. Me encanta explorar por mi cuenta y por eso nunca voy con grupos. La razón es obvia: resulta mucho más sencillo controlar la situación cuando se trata de sólo dos personas. “Urban Exploring is all about entering places you are not supposed to enter. We are enclosed, almost entrapped, by the city we live in. We follow the paths that are drawn for us and have no chance of escaping our everyday existence. But then you open a door, cross a fence, or sneak into a hole and you have left the normal world, you are exploring. As a kid, my father brought me to abandoned factories. The passion remained. But my motivation has been boosted by a taste for photography: before everything rots away, let’s explore and photograph it, thus preserving our cultural heritage. I like exploring on my own, and I never go in groups, for obvious reasons: you can control the situation better when it’s just two people. Lately I’ve slowed down a bit and only go exploring about twice month. The most interesting places I have ever explored are abandoned mental hospitals in the US. “MY FAVOURITE PLACES ARE MENTAL ASYLUMS, BECAUSE YOU CAN STILL FIND TRACES OF THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED THERE” Sandro Baliani, 56 años, Roma “Existen numerosas razones para entrar en un edificio abandonado: el placer de descubrir un lugar olvidado y la calma que se puede encontrar en ellos, la emoción de detectar algo acerca de la gente que vivió y trabajó aquí o la posibilidad de capturar todo esto con la cámara. Empecé a explorar en 1976, cuando fotografié a algunos amigos artistas pintando las paredes de una fábrica abandonada en Roma. Mis sitios favoritos para explorar son las instituciones mentales porque allí aún puedes encontrar pistas acerca de la gente que las habitó, como sus ropas en los armarios. Una vez entramos en una mansión abandonada con unos estucos excepcionales. Entramos por una rendija del primer piso pero, cuando pusimos los pies en el suelo, la alarma de la planta baja saltó. Regresamos a la abertura como en una película de Chaplin: resultó que la mansión no estaba abandonada, después de todo.”
Sandro Baliani, 56, systems engineer, Rome “There are several reasons to enter an abandoned building: the pleasure of uncovering a forgotten place, the quiet you can find there, the excitement of sensing something about the people who lived or worked there, the possibility, the attempt to capture all of this on film. I started exploring in 1976, when I photographed some artist friends painting the walls of an abandoned factory in Rome. My favourite places to explore are mental asylums, because you can still find traces of the people who lived there, like clothes in the wardrobes. Once we entered an abandoned mansion with wonderful stuccos. We got in through a hole in the wall on the first floor, but when we went down to the ground floor the alarm went off. We sped back to the hole like in an old Chaplin film: it turned out the mansion wasn’t abandoned after all.”

R. nº1. No vandalices, no expolies, no rompas nada, ni para entrar. Si cuando llegas a un lugar está cerrado, por muy tentador que resulte romper un cristal para acceder, se suspende la exploración. Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footsteps. Do not plunder or vandalise, do not break anything, not even to get into a place. If a building is closed, as tempting as it might be to break a window to get in, the exploration stops there. R. nº2. Es mejor explorar de día, sobre todo porque va mejor para hacer fotos. It’s always better to explore during the day, especially for taking pictures. R. nº3. El principal peligro son las propias estructuras. Algunos de los sitios pueden estar en mal estado y hay que vigilar siempre donde se pisa y extremar la prudencia. The buildings themselves can pose dangers. Carlos Celester - Las Bravas Espoz y Mina, 13 A Don José Blanco, fundador en 1953 de Las Bravas, le gustaba la cocina. Cuenta uno de sus empleados más antiguos, que un día José decidió mezclar tomate, cayena, pimentón, cebolla “y algún otro ingrediente” para hacer una salsa especial para las patatas. “Fue probando hasta que dio con la fórmula y la patentó como salsa brava”. Desde ese día -al menos para los registros-, él es el inventor de esas patatas picantes y condimentadas, una combinación ganadora que escasea pero gusta mucho en España. 3,05€ ración para 1 persona Mr. José Blanco, who founded Las Bravas in 1953, liked cooking. Roberto González - La Tierruca General Díaz Porlier, 55 “Un día, allá por 1942, la tía Carmen se puso a experimentar con especias y vegetales para hacer una salsa tan buena que llenara de clientes el negocio de su hermano, mi abuelo”, cuenta Roberto, tercera generación de González en La Tierruca. La mezcla (“jamás te voy a decir lo que lleva”) resultó deliciosa y el boca a boca hizo el resto. La Macarena es uno de lo barrios más heterogéneos de la ciudad hispalense gracias a su amplio espacio, su situación casi periférica y el bajo precio de los alquileres. La inmigración africana, sudamericana y china está convirtiendo antiguos cafés de desayuno en locutorios y tiendas de comestibles, los bares están recogiendo todo tipo de recetas exóticas y sus calles se abren, cada vez más, a otros idiomas. Todo ello, sin perder un ápice de autenticidad y manteniendo su estilo de vida intacto. Este tipo de mezcolanza está propiciando la concentración de gente joven en la zona, que busca en este barrio la oportunidad para emprender pequeños negocios. La Alameda, calle Feria, el Pumarejo o el Pelícano, son algunos ejes de este movimiento que empieza a manifestarse en galerías, restaurantes, videoclubes, tiendas de tatuajes, comercios de ropa y centros de reunión. Un barrio al que merece la pena acercarse.
Thanks to lots of space, its nearly peripheral location and low rents, La Macarena is one of the most heterogeneous neighbourhoods in Seville. African, South American and Chinese immigrants have converted the old breakfast cafés into call centres and food stores, bars offer all kinds of exotic dishes, and the streets increasingly resound with foreign languages. Yet the area has not lost a shred of its authenticity and residents have held on to their way of life. This diversity is attracting many young people looking for an opportunity to start small businesses in the neighbourhood. The Alameda, calle Feria, the Pumarejo and the Pelícano are some of the focal points of this movement that is resulting in galleries, restaurants, video clubs, tattoo shops, clothing stores and centres for social gatherings. This is a neighbourhood that’s worth getting to know a little better.

EL GABINETE DEL DR. LETAMENDI Correduría, 46 Nacho Valero y Darío García abrieron este videoclub hará ya dos años. “En principio queríamos hacer un videoclub de autor y una tienda de jazz y blues. Al final, nos quedamos con la primera”. El videoclub fue un éxito, y durante el primer verano organizaron las Noches del Gabinete: “como una verbena, pero ‘indie’, con proyecciones, conciertos y botellines”. El siguiente paso fue abrir un sello independiente, Discos Monterrey, “para lanzar algunos grupos de Sevilla”. El pasado mes de Agosto, Pony Bravo, el primer grupo publicado, congregó a 1.000 personas en el Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo.
LA NAVE ESPACIAL plaza del Pelícano, 4 – Local 1 Rorro Berjano, pintor extremeño de 29 años, lleva casi año y medio trabajando en esta nave, donde es vecino de un sinfín de artistas y músicos que alquilan las otras naves: “Al principio, mi idea era pintar, vivir aquí y utilizarlo como galería para mis obras. Después, empecé a compartir espacio con el pintor sevillano Marcos Fernández”. Ambos proyectaron un espacio que combinara la zona de trabajo con el área expositiva: “Juan Ramón Barbancho -comisario de arte- me ayudó en un par de exposiciones, y me propuso montar una galería, y así decidimos crear la Nave Espacial”, que abrió puertas en septiembre con una exhibición de Rafael Aredano.
EL GABINETE DEL DR. LETAMENDI Correduría, 46 Nacho Valero and Darío García opened this video club two years ago. “Initially, we wanted a video club dedicated to art film and a shop for jazz and blues. We ended up with the former.” The video club was a success and during the first summer they organised “Nights at the Gabinete”: “like a popular festival but ‘indie’, with screenings, concerts and beers.” The next step was to open an independent record label, Discos Monterrey, to launch some bands in Seville. This past August, Pony Bravo, the first band they featured, managed to attract 1,000 people at the Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Art.
LA NAVE ESPACIAL plaza del Pelícano, 4 – Local 1 Rorro Borjano, a 29-year-old painter from Extremadura, has worked in this building for almost a year and a half, neighbour to a whole array of artists and musicians who rent the other warehouses. “At first, my idea was to paint, live here and use it as a gallery for my work. Then I started to share the space with a Sevillian painter, Marcos Fernández.” Both of them imagined a space that combined the work area with the exhibit area. “Juan Ramón Barbanco, the art curator, helped me with a couple of exhibitions and proposed to set up a gallery, and this is how we created the Nave Espacial.” It opened its doors in September with an exhibition of the works of Rafael Aredano.

EXPERIENCES BODEGA GONZALO MOLINA Relator, 59 La bodega Gonzalo Molina lleva abierta más de ciento cincuenta años y tiene ése nombre en honor a su dueño. Desde hace más de treinta, su hijo mantiene la tradición familiar sirviendo pajaritos fritos, sobre todo codornices y alitas. “Quizás sea una de las pocas bodegas que quedan sin restaurar”, lo que no le impide “abrir religiosamente, a partir de la una para no pillarme los dedos, y a eso de las ocho”. Sus paredes son todo un santuario para lo mejor del rock sevillano: Silvio. “Hicimos una exposición homenajeándole, cinco años después de su muerte. Iba a durar dos meses, pero venía tanta gente que duró un año, hay mucha afición en el barrio”.
BAR BUENO León XIII, 27 Pablo Peña es un vecino del centro que descubrió este bar “gracias a una muy buena amiga que vive en la zona y me quería llevar a un sitio castizo pero original”. Y lo consiguió porque “es un local típicamente sevillano, de cervecitas y tapas”, alicatado hasta la mitad y de dudoso gusto en la decoración. Lo peculiar es que está regentado por un matrimonio chino. Él se llama Lee y a ella la llaman Paloma. El camarero es un cubano que lo mismo cuenta chistes como te tira el plato desde la puerta. Y la carta mezcla platos sevillanos con platos chinos servidos en formato tapa. “Todo muy bueno”, dice Pablo. Por eso ha vuelto más de una vez.

IGLESIA DE SAN LUÍS DE LOS FRANCESES San Luís, 52 La Iglesia de San Luís -antiguamente convento, necrópolis y catacumba- ha sido estudiada desde los años 80 por muchos parapsicólogos por los supuestos fenómenos paranormales que allí suceden. Pedro Rodríguez es su portero nocturno desde hace trece años: “yo nunca he visto nada y los que dicen algo siempre lo dicen de oídas. La gente escucha algo y ya se cree que es un fantasma”. Una iglesia desacralizada y reservada para actividades culturales es una rareza en Sevilla, y muchos creen que es por sus extraños sucesos. Actualmente es la sede del Centro Andaluz de Teatro. “Los alumnos se lo toman con más morbo”, cuenta Paco.
IGLESIA DE SAN LUÍS DE LOS FRANCESES San Luís, 52 The San Luís church, formerly a convent, graveyard and catacomb, has been studied since the 1980s by many parapsychologists for its supposed paranormal phenomena. Pedro Rodríguez has been a night doorman there for 13 years: “I never saw anything and the people who say that things are going on here are always telling stories they heard second hand. People hear something and they think it’s a ghost.” A deconsecrated church that is now reserved for cultural activities is a rarity in Seville, and many think that this change is due to the strange occurrences there. Currently it’s the headquarters of the Andalusian Theatre Centre. “Students find it more exciting,” Paco explains.

PLAZA DEL PUMAREJO Daniel Alonso y Olga Beca son vecinos de la plaza del Pumarejo. “Aquí hay bares de toda la vida, con personalidad, que no han sucumbido a la especulación de otros bares de la Alameda”. También encontramos La Casa del Pumarejo, que fue recuperada para el uso vecinal en 2003 al lema de: “No me gustan los pisos finos, preferimos la gracia de los patios de vecinos”. “Por lo general en la plaza hay muy buen rollo, la gente viene aquí a descansar”, dice Olga. Allí mismo está la Bodega Mariano, uno de los bares más auténticos de Sevilla y sitio de reunión de los mejorcito del barrio. “Me encantan los caracoles de Mariano”, dice Daniel.

People come here to rest,” says Olga. Bodega Mariano, on the square, is one of the most authentic ones in Seville and a meeting place for locals. “The best thing is Mariano’s snails,” says Daniel.

Una afición bastante popular, pues además de degustación, los puestos de chacinas y carnes ofrecen cerveza y buenos caldos. “Mi preferido es el de sardinas asadas”. Rocío dice estar encantada: “Es un barrio muy sociable y el mercado es un lujo: más que un sitio de compras es un centro de reunión. Además los jueves por la mañana hay un rastro, como el madrileño pero en pequeñito y más caótico”.

The gardens adjoining the Eiffel Tower are a regular meeting spot for ‘traceurs’, as practicioners are called in French. The long staircase that descends from Palais Chaillot is perfect for fast descents.

un OLOR A LISBOA
Para un curso introductorio a los olores lisboetas comencemos (Lección nº 1) por el centro comercial Mouraria en la plaza Martim Moniz, en el corazón de la ciudad vieja o, para ser más exactos, en sus riñones. El Mouraria es algo inesperado. Se trata de un edificio francamente feo: un espacio alto y ancho sin sentido, un lugar oscuro que baja en espiral como una pesadilla infantil; un inútil torreón ciego que, para utilizar una expresión portuguesa, “no es capaz de recordar al niño Jesús”. En su fealdad, falta de luz y sensación de claustrofobia, el lugar parece, bueno... anti-lisboeta. Pero, por otro lado... puede que no tanto. Por extraño que pueda resultar, la sensación de ciudad abierta es mucho más intensa en este sitio que en otros paisajes abiertos que se pueden disfrutar desde los miradores o las postales. Aquí, en las escaleras del Mouraria, esta idea se materializa en los tentadores olores que te rodean: (1) especias indias; (2) mil y una sutilezas chinas; (3) picantes secretos africanos; (4) y muchos otros de cuantos otros cruces puedas imaginar. Y esto no es literatura, es la pura verdad. No obstante, no vamos a reflexionar demasiado sobre ello ya que Lisboa es un lugar lleno de contrastes. Así que vamos, demos un paseo, serpenteemos por lo cotidiano y crucemos hacia el sol, más allá de la Rua do Arsenal. Esta calle es un monumento, el panteón del bacalao portugués (el mismo que se captura en aguas nórdicas). El pescado de entre los pescados está aquí mismo, sólo para nosotros. Aunque es algo más que un pescado, estamos hablando del verdadero e indiscutible símbolo nacional. Es la comida del alma lusitana y la base de cientos, miles e incluso millones de platos distintos. ¡Ta-chán! Sí, en serio, se trata de un asunto más solemne de lo que pudiera parecer en un principio. Visto esto, (Lección nº 2) recomiendo a todo aquél que se aleje de la Rua do Arsenal en dirección a Cais do Sodré, Satos, Belém o Cascais, que baje la cabeza y ande con paso decidido para mostrar el respeto que exige este símbolo. Nariz atenta, boca cerrada y sin sonrisas, ‘please’. Puede que no lo encuentre en las guías turísticas más convencionales, pero este olor habla mejor del país que cualquier 600 o más palabras
de escritor profesional. Ah, sí, señoras y señores, huele como un mal aliento, como un vendaval procedente de las profundidades de esas tiendas con paredes cubiertas de azulejos y bacalaos colgados del techo; un olor tan intenso como intraducible (incluso más, por ejemplo, que la famosa palabra portuguesa ‘saudade’, que algunos mal llaman nostalgia). Hablamos de un olor complejo ya que es a la vez seco y marino, transparente y salado, tosco y memorable. Un poeta quizás dijese “oh, lírico”. Es un olor que jamás olvidarás, que siempre regresará, una y otra vez. Pero adelante, continuemos, que, si Lisboa es para siempre, entonces todavía conviene no exagerar. Por la tarde, coger el tranvía puede ser uno de tus mejores recuerdos. Nombres de barrios como “Placeres”, “Pozo de los Negros”, “Estrella” o “Gracia” hacen cosquillas a nuestros cinco sentidos o puede que incluso a algún sentido más. Dentro del vagón, personas serias, sentadas, como yo, se ven envueltas en el olor humano de sus colegas pasajeros, únicamente aliviadas cuando alguien baja y una repentina brisa lo inunda todo. Pero, colgados a banda y banda del vagón y disfrutando del paseo gratuito ¿no son esos niños los que experimentan los olores más libres, tristes, felices y, en definitiva, más inolvidables? Al final del día –el mejor momento para pasear por Lisboa, hagamos un alto, por favor, en Calhariz (Lección nº 3). Es una especie de calle alargada que está nada más salir de la plaza Camões, en el barrio Chiado/Bairro Alto. Pregunta a cualquiera. Todos la conocen. Es imposible decir del cierto dónde empieza o dónde acaba. Éste es mi lugar preferido, el punto más luminoso y chillón de la ciudad. Parémonos aquí, sí, por favor. Y ahora abre bien los ojos, estira las manos y siente ese otro aire. Es como una palabra nueva: mezcla del olor a río y a electricidad.

a SMELL OF LISBON
For a brief course in the smells of Lisbon, let’s start (Lesson No. 1) at the Mouraria Commercial Centre in Martim Moniz square, in the heart of the old city, or in its kidneys to be more precise. The MCC is a little unexpected. It is an extremely ugly building: a tall, broad expanse without meaning; a dark space that spirals down like a childhood nightmare; a pointless tower block lacking vision that, to use a common Portuguese expression, “is not even capable of remembering the baby Jesus.” In its ugliness, in its lack of light and its feeling of claustrophobia, the place feels, well, like an anti-Lisbon. But, on the other hand…. not so much. As strange as it seems, the feeling of an open city is even stronger here than in the many open landscapes seen from viewing points and on postcards. Here, on the steps of the MCC, this idea materialises itself in the tantalising smells that waft over you: (1) Indian spices; (2) a thousand and one Chinese subtleties; (3) pungent secrets of Africa; (4) and many more from other imaginable worldly crossroads. This is not literature, it is the truth. But let’s not ponder too long on this as Lisbon is a vast place full of contrasts. So, let’s go, let’s take a stroll, meander through the day-to-day and cross over into the sun on the other side of the Rua do Arsenal.
This street is a monument, the pantheon of Portuguese cod (the same that is caught in Nordic waters), the fish of all fish, right here, just for us. Yet it is more than just a fish; it is the true and indisputable national symbol. It is the food of the Portuguese soul and the basis of hundreds, thousands, even millions of distinct dishes. Ta-tamm! Yes, seriously, the matter is more solemn than it seems at first glance. In light of this, (Lesson No. 2) I recommend that whoever walks away from the Rua do Arsenal in the direction of Cais do Sodré, Santos, Belém or Cascais, lower their head and walk with convincing steps to give this symbol the respect it demands. Nose standing to attention, mouth closed and smiles contained, por favor. Perhaps this does not appear in the more conventional tourist guides but this smell speaks better about a country than any 600 or so words by a professional writer. Ah, yes, ladies and gentlemen, it rushes out like bad breath, like a gale from the depths of the shops with tiled walls and cod hanging from the ceiling; a smell as intense as it is untranslatable (even more, for instance, than the famous Portuguese word ‘saudade’ which can loosely be translated as “yearning”.) It is an intricate smell, as well as being dry and of the sea, transparent and salty, coarse and memorable. A poet may say “oh lyrical.” It is a smell that you will never forget, that will always return again and again. But, forward on, let us continue; if Lisbon is to exist forever, it is wise not to exaggerate. In the afternoon, taking the tram can give you some of the best memories. Neighbourhood names like “Pleasures”, “Black Man’s Well”, “Star” and “Grace” tickle the five senses, and some secondary senses as well. Inside the carriage, earnest people, sitting down, like me, are enveloped in the human smell of their fellow passengers. The only relief comes when one or another gets off and allows a sudden breeze to rush in. But isn’t it the young boys, hanging from the sides of the train, enjoying the free ride, who will experience freer, sadder, happier, more undreamable smells? At the end of the day – the perfect Lisbon hour – let’s stop, please, in Calhariz (Lesson No. 3). It is a sort-of-street, a long stretch that is found as soon as you come out of Camões square, in the Chiado/Bairro Alto district. Just ask, everybody knows it. It is impossible to tell where this little street ends and where it begins. This is my favourite place, the brightest and gaudiest part of the city. Let’s stop here, yes, please. Now open your eyes, stretch out your hands and feel this other air. It feels like a new word: mix of smells of the river and electricity.
