Wedding bells to ring at the Washington County Fair

These fair wedding ceremonies will be performed on a hill overlooking the many flowerbeds within the Washington County Master Gardeners’ lush “Fairest Garden.”

Saying “I do” can be expensive and stressful, whether your wedding guest list is long or short. But how can you keep the cost of your ceremony down - next to nothing at all -- while still ensuring there’s a beautiful backdrop and plenty of space for your family, friends and others to watch? It’s simple: get married at the Washington County Fair. This year, Tenth District Judge Greg Galler will be performing the ceremonies at the fair, for free. And officials note the backdrop for the ceremonies will be picture perfect, without the corn dog and

mini doughnut stands you might expect at the county fair. The ceremonies will be performed overlooking the Washington County Master Gardeners’ lush “Fairest Garden.” And if you’re already hitched but enthralled with the idea of a “fair ceremony,” you’re in luck. Galler will also be performing vow renewal ceremonies for couples who want to say “I do” all over again. Though the ceremonies and garden setting are free, those participating in or observing the see Marriages on page 10

‘What can we do for folks?’ Galler said he and his wife have a tradition of going to the fair every summer, and he has enjoyed talking to Washington County Fair visitors when he’s manned a judicial information booth in previous years. But this year, Galler said he wanted to do something special for fairgoers by offering them a unique and affordable opportunity. “Most of the time, we (judges) meet with people in unpleasant circumstances,” Galler said with a laugh. “Folks think of us as stodgy, old, mean guys, so I thought, ‘what can we do for some folks?’” And since weddings often carry a hefty price tag, Galler said he wanted to offer the ceremonies for free, so that even couples who are struggling financially have the chance to say “I do.” Galler contacted Fair Board Director Margot Rheinberger last year to see if she’d be interested in the idea of hosting the ceremonies at the fair. “It took me literally one second to say yes,” Rheinberger recalled. “You’re always looking to enhance the county fair.” She presented the idea to the Washington County Fair Board earlier this year, and the members agreed the ceremonies would be a unique addition. “We are the only county in the United States to offer fairsponsored free weddings and vow renewals every day of our fair to every qualified person without any pre-registration or contest involved,” adds Margot’s brother John Rheinberger, a fellow fair board director.

Tenth District Judge Greg Galler will be performing free weddings and vow renewals at the Washington County Fair this year.

Expecting a big turnout Galler will be performing the ceremonies on a first-come, firstserved basis during a two-hour time frame at the fair each day from Aug. 1 - 5 at the fairgrounds, located on the eastern border of Lake Elmo. Galler estimates each wedding ceremony will last between three and five minutes. Couples must have a valid Minnesota marriage license, and those interested in getting hitched at the fair should keep in mind there’s a five-day waiting period before the license can be picked up or mailed after a couple applies. So a bit of preplanning will be necessary for couples looking to tie the knot.

Margot Rheinberger said despite the laidback setting, she expects some brides and grooms will still show up in traditional gowns, tuxedos and full wedding party attire. Word about the ceremonies is spreading rapidly, she noted, adding that many couples might opt for a spur-of-the-moment vow renewal ceremony as well. “People at the fair are in a real kind of fun mood,” she said. “(The ceremonies) will be kind of a novelty in the relaxed atmosphere.” Galler said if the ceremonies are a hit this year at the fair, he would be happy to continue offering them each year from then on. He added that if couples are still lined up even

The Fairest Garden is cared for by University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener volunteers through a partnership with the Washington County Agricultural Society, and has several sections that highlight specific themes. The original 50 by 90-foot Fairest Garden plot is located in the eastcentral section of the fairgrounds and has demonstration areas for native plants, perennials, roses, ornamental grasses, a Monarch butterfly garden and much more, notes University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Mary Green. The ceremonies will be held on a hill overlooking the many beautiful gardens within the Fairest Garden, and Bergmann’s Greenhouse and Farm Market in Stillwater has volunteered to do the landscaping and decorating of the area where the ceremonies will be held. Margot Rheinberger notes that couples who’d like to “check out the venue” can visit the Fairest Garden once it’s up and running even before the fair starts. “It’s going to be gorgeous,” Green predicted.
