Honest-1 Auto Care: Service to trust in your community

Eco-friendly products at no extra charge Honest-1’s services also exceed the industry standards, with a full offering of ecofriendly products used during vehicle service and repairs, at

Honest-1 is a fixture at its Lexington Avenue location in Roseville. There are six additional fullservice auto center franchise locations in the metro area, and two more are scheduled to be opening soon.

no extra cost to customers. New in the company’s ecofriendly line is a refined oil that is 100 percent recycled and a biodegradable oil made from animal fat, Henkel says. The biodegradable line has no petroleum base, which makes it 100 percent eco-friendly, Henkel adds. “Both of those products meet all of the federal safety and vehicle manufacturer standards. Those are two options to help reduce the amount of pollutants put into the environment when products are disposed of,” Henkel adds. Eco-friendly products can be used in automobile services from fuel treatments to transmission care, at no extra cost to customers. In addition to the new line of eco-friendly oil products, Honest-1 also offers a full array of water-based cleansers for parts, biodegradable soap and other recycled products. The certified technicians practice oil-water separation maintenance on customers’ vehicles. “We offer that additional

benefit to our service, and customers can choose to help the environment, again at no extra cost, when they bring their car to Honest-1 Auto Care,” Henkel says. “It’s part of our regular, everyday offering, and it benefits both the customer and the environment.” Auto care treatments created to reduce emissions are also available at Honest-1, such as a fuel-maintenance process to remove deposits. That attention to detail and commitment to overall care leads clients to rank Honest-1 among the top providers of full-service automobile repair.

Growing in the community The staff at Honest-1 also gives back by being active in the Roseville community and local school districts. “That’s a big deal to us. We do a variety of fundraising programs, and we’re involved in the schools,” Henkel says. “We are really big believers that we wouldn’t be here

“Everything we do, the quality of service we offer, the warranty we offer, the ecofriendly aspect of the business sets us apart in the foreign and domestic automobile repair industry,” says owner Jim Henkel. Henkel is joined by owner Pat Kelly, with whom he started the business. The “better than ever‚“ philosophy reflects Henkel’s and Kelly’s priority for customers who come in the door for full-service auto repair. “We can take care of all of a customer’s automotive needs,” Kelly says. Customer care starts with the expertise of Honest-1’s seven Automotive Service Excellence certified technicians. Each year the technicians renew their certification and continue their education with ASE classes and seminars detailing the latest technology and automobile service trends, Kelly says. The technicians also take courses online each month. Once a customer drives away from Honest-1 with a completed service, from alignment to engine maintenance, they are guaranteed a threeyear, 36,000-mile warranty, Henkel says, adding that the warranty promise is about triple the industry standard.

sibility to support that community.” In addition to Roseville, Honest-1 has locations in Anoka, Burnsville, Blaine Cottage Grove, Eagan, and the Uptown neighborhood in Minneapolis. In the coming months, locations will open in New Hope and Edina, as the company continues to expand its excellent auto service into other communities. Whether they bring vehicles in for a basic oil change, scheduled tune-up or engine repair, customers will leave Honest-1 Auto Care knowing they’ve gotten superb service from certified technicians with the added confidence ensured by an outstanding warranty. “The quality of service we offer sets Honest-1 Auto Care above the rest,” Kelly says.

Something to catch your eye The Art in the Park booths were full of fun things to buy during last year’s Slice of Shoreview.

Volunteers make it happen Julie Brettner is busy. She works a “more than full-time” job as a commodity manager for a medical device company. She likes to travel. But Brettner finds time to volunteer for the Slice of Shoreview Days. Her main task? Convincing others to join her. It’s not always an easy job. “I don’t even want to estimate [how much time it takes],” Brettner said. “I talk to everybody. Trust me, I have contacted my friends, and friends of friends of friends.” Brettner is the volunteers coordinator for the Slice. She knows that the city’s five-day event couldn’t happen without the tireless work of its volunteer staff. She finds people to help set up the parade or booths, to help clean up afterward, and much more. And many of them, Brettner said,

have fun doing it. One man reluctantly volunteered last summer to help set up for the festival. This summer, he called Brettner to tell her he was free all weekend. “Most people who do it want to come back next year,” she said. “Because it’s fun. It’s just a couple hours of their time, to really help a community event.” Some volunteers contribute much more than a couple hours of their time. Angie Winkel is a volunteer on the Slice of Shoreview Days committee, and is in charge of the parade. With a new route to plan, and new bands and entertainment to bring to the event, it has been a hectic job. But she said the fun of the parade makes it worth it. “Just kind of watching all the behindthe scenes stuff come together,” she see Volunteers on page 4

said. “And then seeing the crowd have a really good time.” Dan and Mary Rustad volunteer to put on the event’s annual car show. For the last three years, they have distributed flyers and organized the event. Dan Rustad said a big benefit to the car show is that the sheriff is willing to close the exit and entrance ramps from I-694 on to Victoria Street, giving the whole street over to the hot rods and motorcycles of the show. “There’s a selection of everything,” he said. “I’ve seen gals who don’t even care about cars who were just looking at all the show and couldn’t look away.” While volunteers put wildly differing amounts of time into preparing the Slice of Shoreview, Brettner said they have one thing in common: A feeling of accomplishment. “It’s a long weekend, and I’m exhausted at the end of it,” she said. “But it’s a good exhaustion. You feel like you really did something.”

sional pilots will conduct the eight- to tenminute rides. They will take off from the Island Lake Elementary school parking lot, beginning around 3:30 p.m. and running until dark. Slice committee member Mike Baker said the helicopter rides last year were among the most popular events at the festival.

“They fly over the park and you can get a bird’s-eye view,” he said. “People really enjoy it.” Johnson said the helicopters bank over the park and over Island Lake, providing passengers beautiful views of the area. He also said he tries to take customers near their home, so they can “see what their houses look like from the sky.” “It’s a great area, and it’s been a great experience,” Johnson said. “I can’t recall anybody that’s gone on a flight with us that wasn’t happy.”

The Truman Company: a trusted name in coins

W

Page 11

Slice of Shoreview Days 2012

hen it comes to navigating the world of rare coins and precious metals, people have found a trusted guide in Roger Westerling for well over three decades. Sometimes, customers come to The Truman Company to find out the value of a coin or a coin collection so they can sell it. Others want an appraisal so they know a little more about their possessions, says Westerling, owner of The Truman Company in Roseville. And, in a scene that echoes Westerling’s own past, sometimes a neophyte walks in with a coin and a certain gleam in the eye – and leaves with a wealth of knowledge and a newly-minted passion for coins. After 36 years in business, there are plenty of repeat customers at The Truman Company. Westerling’s recipe for continued success is simple: unmatched knowledge of his field and a commitment to building and keeping trust. “We focus on good service and honesty.” Westerling is a life member of the American Numismatic Association with an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. He’s been trusted with collections that are too big for their owners to bring into the office. This is where his sterling customer service really shines. “I’m more than happy to come out to their home or bank,” he says. Either instore or off-site, he spends whatever time it takes to make sure he’s provided a meticulous appraisal. And if someone is interested in selling a collection, they can be assured Westerling won’t “cherry-pick” a few valuable coins and leave them with the rest. He says it’s only fair to do business on their terms, and with his experience and contacts, he can handle a wide range of inventory. “There’s a market for everything,” he says. For one thing, the business Westerling began as a storefront for local customers now counsels people from thousands of miles away. Thanks to the digital age, The Truman Company now counts an estimated 2,500 active clients around the country. Westerling learned the trade from his uncle Truman, a California coin dealer who crisscrossed the country in a quest to find the most coveted coins. “Every time he visited my family, he gave me a coin that had an interesting history. His hope was that I would foster a real interest in rare and unusual coins,” Westerling says. And it worked! While old coins appreciate gradually,

Owner Roger Westerling and mascot “Sonny” welcome coin enthusiasts to The Truman Company. Right, Westerling has offered trustworthy appraisals of coins for 36 years.

In their words Think the coin business is chancy, confusing and, well, rigged against you? These clients of The Truman Company found that with the right advisor, it isn’t. “Once my wife and I determined that we wanted to have precious metals in our portfolio, we contacted one of the highly advertised national providers of these products. The discussion was clear, but the process felt cumbersome. . . Just prior to making the phone call to finalize the purchase, we contacted The Truman Company for a second opinion. We were very glad we did. Roger made sure we understood the entire buy-sell process, all the fees involved and what to

precious metals have seen a dramatic spikes in value. From 2002 to 2012, the value of silver went up 456 percent and gold 478 percent. “I honestly think the prices for gold and silver will continue to rise during our lifetime,” Westerling says. The Truman Company has also undergone some major changes in the past year – moving to a new suite that doubled the space to accommodate additional staff and an increased client base. But the business is still easy to find, at the same office building. Another addition to the suite: space for a dog bed and water bowl for “Sonny,” a Lab-retriever mix – golden retriever, of course. As with so many of Westerling’s decisions, Sonny was a sound investment. “He’s great with customers and adds a special welcome to the place.” Curious about a collection? Concerned about a pending purchase? There’s help right around the corner. “My staff and I are dedicated to helping peo-

expect after the sale. We made the purchase through Truman and the products were delivered directly to our front door within days. Because the route isn’t all that’s new in the parade this year. The 2011 Drum Corps Associates

the Slice of Shoreview. Shoreview Einhausen Sister City Association (SESCA) sponsors the exchange. SESCA President Bill Kiehnbaum said this event is a big step forward in the organization’s mission. “Our main goal is to promote and foster one-to-one exchanges between the citizens of Einhausen and Shoreview. We’re about people-topeople engagement, Kiehnbaum said. “And this is the biggest exchange we’ve had so far. Kiehnbaum said as SESCA looked for ways to bring the two communities together, ideas centered around one commonality: Both cities had community bands. And so efforts focused on

bringing together a musical meeting. Members of Musikcorps will arrive in Shoreview July 20, after stopping to play in Chicago and Wisconsin. SESCA’s website says Musikcorp’s band motto is “Groovy, lively, fiery, and it promises “a mix of cool arrangements, a lively sound, and fiery concert experiences with a mix of pop, classical, rock and traditional. Slice of Shoreview committee member Mike Baker said the SESCA connection is an important part of the festival this year. The word “Wilkommen is displayed at the top of the event’s website, sliceofshoreview.com. “Having a different culture here, and learning about new people, it will be fun, said Baker. The visitors will march and play see Einhausen on page 15

He and his wife will ride in a car in the parade. “Thank you very much for the invitation to ride in the car at the parade,” Jakob wrote in an e-mail response to the festival board’s invitation. “It’s an honor [for] us to take part of the parade. It will be the third time that we’ll see the parade and it’s our seventh visit in Shoreview.” Kiehnbaum said SESCA is excited to have Einhausen guests in town, and is glad the Slice of Shoreview is welcoming them. “It’s a great chance to improve relationships on an international level,” he said. “We’re not all that different, there’s a lot of commonalities. German culture in particular is big in Minnesota. And the connections you form with these people, they’re lifelong relationships.”

Got foot pain? Total Healthcare can help

hen Barb Norine was unable to free herself from crippling pain and numbness in her feet, her son, Dr. Josh Norine, D.C. at Total Healthcare, was desperate to find a way to ease her suffering. Barb had traveled the country visiting specialist after specialist to try to find relief, and was eventually diagnosed with a form of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy can cause painful sensations, including soreness, numbness, burning, stinging, tingling and tightness in the feet and legs – all of which can making walking difficult and painful. One day, the numbness in Barb’s feet even caused her to fall and break her back – an event that nearly caused her to give up hope of ever leading a life without pain. Barb is just one of an estimated 20 million people in the U.S. who suffer from peripheral neuropathy, and a majority of those who have the condition are over age 45. “Most people don’t have any idea what’s wrong with their feet when they have this condition,” Dr. Josh explains. “Basically, the nerves in your feet go bad.” So when Dr. Josh heard about a new non-surgical medical treatment covered by most insurance plans, he decided it was worth researching. Especially if it could help patients like his mother. It did, and Dr. Mark Bostrom, D.O., N.D., and Dr. Flete Gray, P.A. began offering the medical treatment at Total Healthcare in Roseville. Now, Total Healthcare is the only health care office in the area that offers this treatment, and there are fewer than 150 other offices that do so throughout the U.S. “This is a process that’s working off the charts,” Dr. Josh says, adding that he’s especially pleased it has been able to dramatically reduce his own mother’s pain. “I can bend over and pick up something off the floor without much problem, unlike before,” Barb explains. “I never expected to see this much progress after a series of just 16 visits.” Total Healthcare doctors say another major benefit of this new exclusive treatment is that it can ease pain, free-

ing patients from dependence on potentially addictive pain medications. And Barb isn’t the only one who has found relief from pain caused by peripheral neuropathy through Total Healthcare. The office began offering the treatment, which has been around for several years, six months ago, and nows sees about 30 patients each week. The experts at Total Healthcare have researched peripheral neuropathy extensively, and note though many people who suffer from the condition are diabetic, diabetes isn’t the only cause of the disease. They encourage those with symptoms of peripheral neuropathy to come to Total Healthcare to determine whether they might benefit from this medical treatment. If you’re unable to find relief from constant pain in your feet, call Total Healthcare to find out how you, like Barb Norine, may be able to get a new lease on life.

Total Healthcare is located at 2151 Hamline Ave N. Suite 111 (County Rd B and Hamline) Roseville, MN 55113

Here’s what peripheral neuropathy patients are saying about a new, exclusive treatment offered by Total Healthcare. “My feet constantly felt prickly, burning, throbbing and stinging sensations. They always felt round on the bottom, making walking painful and unsteady. After a few treatments I started to notice the “normal” feeling starting to return to my feet and the pain diminishing. Every week I have noticed positive results.” – Mary S. I would recommend this treatment to others who suffer from neuropathy. This has reduced my pain in my foot by 50 percent.” – Ron D.
