Taking community in Inver Grove to new Heights

A

s it happens every year, summer seems to be ending almost as soon as it started. Most vacations have already been taken, schools are revving up once again and the nights carry a slight chill. While there’s nothing that can be done to slow the passing of summer, there is one surefire way to wring every last ounce of fun out of what remains: the annual return of Inver Grove Heights Days. Last but not least among summer festivals, Inver Grove Heights Days gives summer lovers one more chance to chow down on a hot dog under the hot sun, dance beneath streetlights and soak in the sound and color of the floats, marching bands, and royal ambassadors in the parade. Inver Grove Heights Days, which will take place this year Sept. 6-9, offers fun

for everyone regardless of age, gender or hometown, but for Inver Grove Heights residents the events take on an added sweetness -- an opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with neighbors and family and celebrate the community you call home.

Start healthy on Thursday If you want to make the most of Inver Grove Heights Days, it’s a good idea to keep your strength up with a healthy dose of fresh produce at the outset. The St. Paul Farmer’s Market will offer a broad selection of locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers as well as artisan goods such as honey, syrup, salsas and jerky at the Veteran’s Memorial Community Center parking lot from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. In the off-chance that freshlysee Festival on page 5

Candidates aspire to a crowning achievement

T

he great thing about festivals like Inver Grove Heights Days is that there’s something fun for everyone. Young and old can find the right mix of food, dancing, games and athletics to make the event memorable. However, one special slice of Inver Grove Heights Days is reserved for a select, deserving few: only one candidate in each of the six categories gets to go home with a tiara and a spot in Inver Grove Heights Royalty history. The future Miss Inver Grove Heights, Inver Grove Heights Princess, Junior Miss Inver Grove Heights, Junior Princess, Little Miss Inver Grove Heights and Little Princess will be crowned Sept. 8, at 4:30 p.m. at the Inver Hills Performing Arts Center. Everyone is invited to root for the home team as the Simley Spartans take on the Tartan Titans at the high school in the first home game of the football season. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and fans are expected to play a crucial role in the home-field advantage category by cheering the Spartans on. Regardless of how the game finishes, everyone can be a winner for the night by fox-trotting on over the Drkula’s Bowl parking lot for the annual Street Dance from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. Popular local group Uncle Chunk will pick up where it left off at last year’s Inver Grove Heights Days. Uncle Chunk has been rocking the Twin Cities and surrounding area for more than a decade and a half with its special take on alternative rock. Besides their original material, the group also covers hit songs by a range of artists from Neil Diamond to Nirvana --they’re sure to have a rhythm in their repertoire that will set your feet tapping.

Nothing brings parade watchers and marchers together like a seemingly neverending supply of candy and trinkets.

Jam-packed Saturday For those who think of Saturday as a day to sleep in and loaf around, think again. You’ll have to bring your best effort Sept. 8 to keep up with all the events scheduled on the busiest day of

the festival. If there’s one thing that can reliably get people up early on a Saturday, it’s fishing. Show up at Simley Island Park by 8 a.m. and cast until 10:30 for a chance to reel in a prize for your fishing prowess. Entry into contest and worms are free if you present your Inver Grove

Heights Day Button. Kids looking for a more terrestrial contest that favors cunning and a sharp eye should join in the Children’s Treasure Hunt at 9 a.m. at Oakwood Park. The contest, designed for kids aged 1-12, challenges kids to track down color-coded cans and turn them in for prizes. This event is also free with a button. For those with a competitive streak, check out the all-day volleyball tournament at Drkula’s. This year, 24 teams will serve, set and spike their way through the tournament with their eyes on the prize and hopes of leaving their opponents in the dust, er, sand. Prefer finesse to sweat? Check out the all-day beanbag tournament also held at Drkula’s. This 32-team tourney is operating on a new structure this year, with teams starting in pool play before moving on to two separate brackets of single-elimination finals. “You’re guaranteed more games,” said Chris Nelson, vice president of the Inver Grove Heights Days Committee, on the decision to switch to the new see Festival on page 12

tournament structure. “It kind of equalizes playing brackets.” If you can’t take the heat, get out of the sun and inside Drkula’s to take advantage of open bowling from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. As long as you can find an open lane, you can bowl until every last pin (or you) falls over. At 11 a.m., everyone will want to make time for the main event of Inver Grove Heights Days: the Grand Parade. The parade starts at 80th Street and goes down Cahill Avenue to 65th Street. Pick a spot along the way and make sure you catch all the candy, music and visual bonanzas that march by. The Bingo Tent picks up again at the Village Square parking lot from 1 to 9 p.m., giving you plenty of chances for the stars and daubers to align in your favor. Here’s a question: how do you make sweating, spandex, and faces buried into hairy armpits fun? Watch other people suffer through them! Check out the

wrestling exhibition at Drkula’s parking lot at 2 p.m. “The wrestling is so entertaining to watch,” Nelson said. Nelson also emphasized the benefit of buttoning up: wrestling is yet anotherr or event that’s free for spectators who show off their Inver Grove Heights Days 2012 button. The afternoon offers plenty of chances to exercise and burn off the fair food. Head to North Valley Park at 2:30 p.m. and fling your way into Inver Grove Heights history at the disc golf tournament, or pump up your tires and hit the trail with the Bike the Bridges Ride at 4. The bike ride goes from the Swing Bridge to the Wakota Bridge for a round trip of approximately

six miles. Participants must wear helmets and those under 18 must have a parent present. Wash up after they day’s activities, make yourself presentable to royal company and then and make your way to the Inver H Hills Performing Arts Center for the Inver Grove Heights Royalty Coronation at 4:30 p.m.

Afterwards, dance out your cramps in another street dance at Drkulas pa parking lot from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. The band Arch Allies will rock you to classic hits from the groups Styx, Journey and Reo Speedwagon. Finally, end the day with a bang. A pre-show starts at 80th Street and Cahill Avenue, where you see the first public appearance for the freshly-crowned

Inver Grove Heights Fire and Police Departments will put on educational public safety displays. Foods. There you can find tractors and other farm implements of yesteryear, along with a vintage display of lawn and garden tools. If you didn’t fare well in competition the day before, you still have a chance to be a winner with some help from your four-legged friend. Show up at the Bingo Tent in the Village Square parking at noon with your furry companion for the Pet Contest, where you can win prizes in categories like best trick, best costume, best smile, longest tail and an owner/pet look-alike competition. Afterward, stick around for a final round of bingo that starts at 1 p.m. and goes until 4. Make sure to hang onto your button throughout the weekend. Besides discounts and free entries to many events, such as the pet contest, you’re also entered for a chance to win a prize in the button drawing at 4 p.m. Of course, the end of Inver Grove Heights Days (and summer) isn’t the end of the world. There’s plenty to forward to in the days ahead: cooler temperatures, heated elections and colorful leaves. And, if nothing else, you can always start a countdown to next year’s Inver Grove Heights Days.
