The Truman Company: a trusted name in coins

W

hen it comes to navigating the world of rare coins and precious metals, people have found a trusted guide in Roger Westerling for well over three decades.

Owner Roger Westerling and mascot “Sonny” welcome coin enthusiasts to The Truman Company. Right, Westerling has offered trustworthy appraisals of coins for 36 years.

In their words

“Once my wife and I determined that we wanted to have precious metals in our portfolio, we contacted one of the highly advertised national providers of these products. The discussion was clear, but the process felt cumbersome. . . Just prior to making the phone call to finalize the purchase, we contacted The Truman Company for a second opinion. We were very glad we did. Roger made sure we understood the entire buy-sell process, all the fees involved and what to

precious metals have seen a dramatic spikes in value. From 2002 to 2012, the value of silver went up 456 percent and gold 478 percent. “I honestly think the prices for gold and silver will continue to rise during our lifetime,” Westerling says. The Truman Company has also undergone some major changes in the past year – moving to a new suite that doubled the space to accommodate additional staff and an increased client base. But the business is still easy to find, at the same office building. Another addition to the suite: space for a dog bed and water bowl for “Sonny,” a Lab-retriever mix – golden retriever, of course. As with so many of Westerling’s decisions, Sonny was a sound investment. “He’s great with customers and adds a special welcome to the place.” Curious about a collection? Concerned about a pending purchase? There’s help right around the corner. “My staff and I are dedicated to helping peo-

expect after the sale. We made the purchase through Truman and the products were delivered directly to our front door within days. We felt that we were important to them and that they would take care of any issues that might arise. We will definitely use them in the future and truly recommend them to anyone.” – K. B., Michigan “I had many negative experiences in the coin industry. The Truman Company is the first and only coin dealer I have ever dealt with that has been forthright and honest. And I hasten to say the only coin dealer from whom I have had a profit. . . If you had an honest dealer as I believe The Truman Company to be, stay with them just as you would keep an honest and capable mechanic.” – C.A., Virginia

ple preserve and grow their wealth, just like my Uncle Truman did,” Westerling says. “That is why I started The Truman Company.” You can hear the Truman Company and Roger Westerling featured in the

Brett Winterble Show, Monday through Friday from 9-10pm Eastern on XM Talk 168. In addition Roger joins Brett twice a month to break down the latest in the global precious metals and numismatics markets!

Think the coin business is chancy, confusing and, well, rigged against you? These clients of The Truman Company found that with the right advisor, it isn’t.

Sometimes, customers come to The Truman Company to find out the value of a coin or a coin collection so they can sell it. Others want an appraisal so they know a little more about their possessions, says Westerling, owner of The Truman Company in Roseville. And, in a scene that echoes Westerling’s own past, sometimes a neophyte walks in with a coin and a certain gleam in the eye – and leaves with a wealth of knowledge and a newly-minted passion for coins. After 36 years in business, there are plenty of repeat customers at The Truman Company. Westerling’s recipe for continued success is simple: unmatched knowledge of his field and a commitment to building and keeping trust. “We focus on good service and honesty.” Westerling is a life member of the American Numismatic Association with an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. He’s been trusted with collections that are too big for their owners to bring into the office. This is where his sterling customer service really shines. “I’m more than happy to come out to their home or bank,” he says. Either instore or off-site, he spends whatever time it takes to make sure he’s provided a meticulous appraisal. And if someone is interested in selling a collection, they can be assured Westerling won’t “cherry-pick” a few valuable coins and leave them with the rest. He says it’s only fair to do business on their terms, and with his experience and contacts, he can handle a wide range of inventory. “There’s a market for everything,” he says. For one thing, the business Westerling began as a storefront for local customers now counsels people from thousands of miles away. Thanks to the digital age, The Truman Company now counts an estimated 2,500 active clients around the country. Westerling learned the trade from his uncle Truman, a California coin dealer who crisscrossed the country in a quest to find the most coveted coins. “Every time he visited my family, he gave me a coin that had an interesting history. His hope was that I would foster a real interest in rare and unusual coins,” Westerling says. And it worked! While old coins appreciate gradually,

Canadian Days 2012

Canadian Days will once again fill backpacks Canadian Days, for the third straight year, will help Little Canada Elementary School deal with one of the main problems its parents encounter: affordable school supplies. Chrissy Rehnberg, an executive assistant at Roseville Area Schools, said one of the most commonly voiced issues raised at the school’s parent barbecues is that many families cannot provide all the school supplies their students need. And at new enrolling sessions, she said, parents often see the list of supplies needed at the start of the school year and wonder how they will pay for that list. So six years ago, the school district started the Backpacks for Kids project. It got local churches

involved at first, and in 2010 Canadian Days joined in the effort. On Aug. 4, between 8 a.m. and noon, Canadian Days will be collecting school supplies in Spooner Park. The items needed, according to Canadian Days CEO Sue Nelson, are: backpacks, notebooks, pocket folders, pencils, pens, markers, crayons, color pencils, rulers, glue sticks/bottles, scissors, and one-inch binders. The school district uses monetary donations to buy backpacks, and then uses the supplies donated by groups like Canadian Days to fill those backpacks and give them to Little Canada Elementary students in

need. Usually, the festival provides about 30 backpacks full of supplies, Rehnberg said, which has been about 20 percent of the total generated. “It always helps, anything helps our students in need,” she said. “Little Canada has a high need for school supplies, so it’s a great way for people to give back.” In the first year, before the district involved churches and Canadian Days in the collection, it struggled to meet its goal of 100 backpacks. Now, it is over 200 each year. And a nice thing about donating

to Canadian Days, Rehnberg said, is that people can be sure their donations are staying in the community. “Cub Foods and other places do these sorts of drives, but a lot of times the donations end up in St. Paul or Minneapolis,” she said. “At Canadian Days, you know your donations are staying in Little Canada and in this community.” The district tries to use grant funding as well, Rehnberg said, but when the grants dry up, they are often not refunded. That makes them less reliable than a donation source like Canadian Days. “It’s great,” she said. “It’s a source of supplies we can always count on.”

Canadian Days gets ready to yell “bingo!” Karen McCrae decided to try playing bar bingo once a few years ago. She hadn’t played much, and didn’t totally know what she was doing. During her first game, the bingo caller at the bar came up to her and asked her why she never played at Hog’s Breath, a bar in Little Canada. McCrae, who said she is “not a drinker,” said she didn’t want to go see Bingo on page 7

to a “biker’s bar” to play bingo. The caller told her to come try it out that weekend, that it would be fun. “It was like a personal invitation,” McCrae said. “It made me feel welcome.” The bingo caller was Connie Smith, who will be calling at Canadian Days’ all-new Bingo Bonanza in Spooner Park Aug. 5. And McCrae soon found out that she wasn’t the only one who came to play specifically with Smith. Smith is involved in several charity organizations. And as part of her work with those organizations, she calls bingo at local bars six nights per week. She tries to go above the call in making the game entertaining for players, coming up with catch-phrases for different calls — after drawing a

50, she calls out “Book ‘em, Danno!” in reference to the TV show Hawaii 5-0 — and engaging the crowd throughout the night. “I try to make it fun, whichever way I can,” she said. “God gave me a good attitude to do this kind of thing.” Her tactics work. Smith said with a laugh that she has “groupies,” or a clan of around 20 people who go to play wherever she is calling throughout the week. Some, Smith said, play four to five times per week. After playing at Hog’s Breath, McCrae became one of Smith’s traveling bingo players. “Connie is the draw,” she said. “She has a personality that goes with it. While people are walking around selling the game cards, instead of just sitting and waiting, she goes out and visits with people, especially who she hasn’t seen playing. She makes them feel welcome, and that makes a difference.”

Residents will have a chance to experience Smith’s fun brand of bingo for themselves at Canadian Days. Committee member Lynda Beaudoin said people should arrive early to Spooner Park for the 1:30-4 p.m. game. It will immediately follow the parade, and Beaudoin recommended people interested in playing just get their seats and watch the parade from the bingo tent. “We were trying to get people up to the park on Sunday afternoon,” Beaudoin said. “It’s something to do in the afternoon, and people enjoy bingo. We’ve gotten a very positive response.” Smith said she told the Canadian Days committee she “would love” to be involved in the Bingo Bonanza. Many of her fans will be in attendance, including McCrae. “I’ve never been to a Canadian Days, but I intend to be there,” she said. “I even bought a button. And it’s because of Connie.”

Got foot pain? Total Healthcare can help

Total Healthcare is located at 2151 Hamline Ave N. Suite 111 (County Rd B and Hamline) Roseville, MN 55113

The staff at Total Healthcare want to help you feel your best. From left to right: insurance specialist Jeanne Martineau; Dr. Scott Arneson, D.C.; front desk coordinator Ciera Colbert; Flete Gray, P.A. - C; rehab specialist Dan Delahunt; administrator Jennifer Norine; Dr. Josh Norine, D.C.

Here’s what peripheral neuropathy patients are saying about a new, exclusive treatment offered by Total Healthcare. “My feet constantly felt prickly, burning, throbbing and stinging sensations. They always felt round on the bottom, making walking painful and unsteady. After a few treatments I started to notice the “normal” feeling starting to return to my feet and the pain diminishing. Every week I have noticed positive results.” – Mary S. I would recommend this treatment to others who suffer from neuropathy. This has reduced my pain in my foot by 50 percent.” – Ron D.

Barb had traveled the country visiting specialist after specialist to try to find relief, and was eventually diagnosed with a form of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy can cause painful sensations, including soreness, numbness, burning, stinging, tingling and tightness in the feet and legs – all of which can making walking difficult and painful. One day, the numbness in Barb’s feet even caused her to fall and break her back – an event that nearly caused her to give up hope of ever leading a life without pain. Barb is just one of an estimated 20 million people in the U.S. who suffer from peripheral neuropathy, and a majority of those who have the condition are over age 45. “Most people don’t have any idea what’s wrong with their feet when they have this condition,” Dr. Josh explains. “Basically, the nerves in your feet go bad.” So when Dr. Josh heard about a new non-surgical medical treatment covered by most insurance plans, he decided it was worth researching. Especially if it could help patients like his mother. It did, and Dr. Mark Bostrom, D.O., N.D., and Dr. Flete Gray, P.A. began offering the medical treatment at Total Healthcare in Roseville. Now, Total Healthcare is the only health care office in the area that offers this treatment, and there are fewer than 150 other offices that do so throughout the U.S. “This is a process that’s working off the charts,” Dr. Josh says, adding that he’s especially pleased it has been able to dramatically reduce his own mother’s pain. “I can bend over and pick up something off the floor without much problem, unlike before,” Barb explains. “I never expected to see this much progress after a series of just 16 visits.” Total Healthcare doctors say another major benefit of this new exclusive treatment is that it can ease pain, free-

ing patients from dependence on potentially addictive pain medications. And Barb isn’t the only one who has found relief from pain caused by peripheral neuropathy through Total Healthcare. The office began offering the treatment, which has been around for several years, six months ago, and nows sees about 30 patients each week. The experts at Total Healthcare have researched peripheral neuropathy extensively, and note though many people who suffer from the condition are diabetic, diabetes isn’t the only cause of the disease. They encourage those with symptoms of peripheral neuropathy to come to Total Healthcare to determine whether they might benefit from this medical treatment. If you’re unable to find relief from constant pain in your feet, call Total Healthcare to find out how you, like Barb Norine, may be able to get a new lease on life.

Burning Feet? Electric Shocks? Pain & Numbness? Pins & Needles? Creepy Crawlies? You might have Peripheral Neuropathy Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects nearly 20 million Americans. It usually begins in the feet and lower legs, but over time, can advance to the hands and fingers. Until now, the only treatment for this terrible condition has been oral medications and injections. And in many cases, these simply didn’t work. We’ve utilized a completely NEW TREATMENT that may take away most, if not all, of your pain. It’s safe and highly effective for most people...even diabetics. It’s covered by many insurance plans. Call now to schedule a FREE conference with one of our doctors.

Dr. Josh Norine’s mother, Barb Norine, has suffered from a form of neuropathy for 25 years. After starting treatments at Total Healthcare, Barb’s pain has decreased dramatically.

Local businesses to be highlighted All it took was a little brush-clearing for Canadian Days to add an exciting new component to its 2012 festival. For “several years,” Canadian Days president Janene Connelly said, the festival wanted to have a designated area for local businesses to set up booths open to the public. But Spooner Park, she said, isn’t quite big enough. The festival asked the city to remove brush and add grass to a section of the park, and that created enough space for about 15 businesses to have a 10 x 13 foot area to set up a booth or tent. “We’re excited for a new component to Canadian Days,” Connelly said. “It gives businesses the opportunity to showcase what they do to the approximately 10,000 people who pass through the park over the course of three days.” And it won’t be only the businesses benefiting from the addition, Connelly said. “For the people who visit the festival, it just gives them one more thing to actively participate in.” Advanced Spinal Care and Rehab,

a local chiropractor business, will be giving out free five-minute massages, as well as handing out gift certificates. The Little Canada Historical Society will host a booth and a photo display of different aspects of the city’s history. They will display a streetscape of the city in 1953, when it officially became a village. “It gives us a chance to reach out to the public,” said Kathy Hanson, of the LCHS. “To try to pique their interest in the past. We welcome anyone who wants to stop by.” Other businesses hosting booths include Comcast, CostCo, Curves, Eternal Spring Acupuncture, Incredible Nutrition 4 You, Minnesota Stars Soccer, Scentsy Wickless Candles, and Usborne Books. Each booth will give visitors something interesting to see, and learn about the business in their area. The event is full for this summer, but Connelly said “it’s not too soon” to apply on the city’s website for a booth at next year’s Canadian Days. “It’s brand new, and we’ve been very pleased with the response,” she said.
