Adding fresh events to a hometown tradition It’s that time of year again — county fair season. The 99th Annual Ramsey County Fair is coming up July 11-15, and this year Fair Manager Joe Fox is hoping for much less rain and much more fun for families. Fox has scheduled many classic Ramsey County Fair events, but this year he’s especially looking forward to some of the newer events, including the Agricadabra Magic Show that will run each night of the fair. “Agricadabra is new; they’ve never been here before,” Fox said. “It’s a show out of Indiana. They’re going to put on an educational program about agriculture and so on.” The show is not only educational, but it is fun for families, Fox said. Although

Agricadabra has never been on a Ramsey County Fair stage, the group performed at the Hennepin County Fair this year and Fox said he was impressed with what he saw. “It’s probably for more younger families but I’ve seen adults really clam onto it,” Fox said. “It’s a good show. They try to involve kids, but adults I think are entertained by the kids’ involvement with it.” Another somewhat new event will be Sunday afternoon’s car show put on by the North St. Paul History Cruzers. Since the fair hadn’t seen a vintage car show in several years, Fox said it was time to bring it back. The History Cruzers’ car show see Events on page 3

is quite popular in North St. Paul, so it only seemed fitting to let them host the show at the fair. The White Bear Avenue parade will kick off the fair at 7 p.m. July 11 with an array of local marching bands, floats and entertainers. And of course the fair will feature a petting zoo and the annual talent contest. Fox said he expects many people to be looking forward to the nightly pig races that have been a huge hit in the past. The carnival area of the fair is also a big attraction. “Of course we have one of the best carnivals in the state, Fox said. “We’ve got some good advanced ticket sales and specials every day for carnival rides. Check out the full schedule of fair events at www.ramseycountyfair.com. You’ll find your pick of exhibitors, great fair food and music. Other featured events include 4-H activities, a flower arrangers’ competition, Ozseeker the Clown and, of course, a kiddie tractor pull.

Fair admission is free and the grounds are located at 2020 White Bear Avenue in Maplewood.

Brighter skies for the future Last year’s fair didn’t bring in the number of people Fox would have liked, mostly due to the weather. In less than 18 hours during the fair, the area was soaked with six inches of rain. The fireworks were canceled on both Friday and Saturday. It’s Fox’s hope that this year Mother Nature will have mercy on fairgoers so Friday night’s fireworks display doesn’t need to be canceled yet again. Fox has been managing the Ramsey County Fair for 27 years, and he’s been on the board of directors since 1966. He said he’s not about to leave before next year’s 100th year of the fair. While he said he believes it’s time for new ideas, he hopes to stay on as fair manager through next year before throwing in the towel. “We’re on 99, and God willing we might make 100, Fox joked.

Whee!

There’s a ride at the fair for every courage level, from tiny tots to veteran gravity-defiers.

n March 1963, Joe Boler opened the Hillcrest car wash at 1635 White Bear Avenue. In the 49 years since then, Joe estimates that more than 3 million cars have been washed there. “Dollar-wise, you can’t beat it,” says Monty Jurek. “We do the full service — the inside, the rugs, the console, the exterior wash — quickly and spotlessly.” Monty joined the Boler car wash crew in 1978, and his wife Jean began working there in 1981. Thirty years later, they’re part-owners of the business — along with Joe and his daughter Mary . Monty impressed his then-boss, now-partner with his work ethic from day one.

49 years of success is a testament to the quality and service at Boler’s, but it should come as no surprise. Joe earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and worked for NASA on the Mercury space program for a year before opening the car wash. Compared to space flight, a smoothas-silk wash is a piece of cake.

The parade’s many musical units are a special draw, whether you’ve got a friend in the tuba section or just love marching bands.

The Blue Star Moms -- and family members -- keep those serving in the military in mind with their parade unit.

The White Bear Avenue Parade: always a crowd pleaser This year’s White Bear Avenue Parade will look a lot like it has the last few years. But Lisa Theis, Community Organizer for the White Bear Avenue Business Association, said anyone who has been to the parade in years past knows that isn’t a bad thing. “There isn’t much new this year, but it’s never the same parade,” she said.

“People can expect a great time.” The parade will begin at 7 p.m. July 11. It should finish by 9 or 9:30, Theis said — depending on the temperature outside. “It depends a little on the weather,” she said. “Sometimes if it’s too hot out, the people in the parade move a little slower.” The parade’s turn-out is also depen-

dent on nice, cool weather. Theis said it typically draws between 10,000 and 12,000 spectators. The White Bear Avenue Business Association made a crowd-control request to the city for 12,000 people this year. Among the parade’s approximately 100 units will be several local high school bands, including the Tartan High School and Maple Grove High School

marching bands. Theis said having the school bands play gives the event a fun, local feel. “Having bands makes the parade,” she said. “You can feel the music through your toes as they walk down the street. Kids start dancing, and adults like some of the old music they play. It’s a lot of fun.”

Trot down to the youth pet show Youth between the ages of 5 and 19 are invited to bring a special pet to the Youth Pet Show. The fair has showcased everything from huge dogs to guinea pigs in hats. This year’s pet show will be on Thursday, July 12 starting at 6 p.m. Prizes and trophies will be awarded and there are several categories to participate in. There are awards for the largest pet, smallest pet, hairiest, furriest, and most feathered. If a pet likes to wear satin and sequins, there is an award for the best dressed pet as well. Judges are also looking for perfect pairs, where the pet and the young owner resemble one another in features, personality or mannerisms. Youth who are knowledgeable about pets or certain breeds of pets can also enter. That means if Mom and Dad don’t have room for a horse on their suburban lot, Daughter can still display her knowledge of everything equine for judges. Registration for the youth pet show will begin at 5:30 p.m. July 12 at the fairgrounds.

It’s a scream Ever notice those who scream the loudest on those wild rides are the first ones back in line for another thrill? As always, the fair will have plenty of gravity-defying fun on hand.

Braided beauty They’re commonly called “rag rugs” because pioneer women wove them out of scrap material, but this example is no dirt-collector. The contrasting red, white, black and plaid materials were carefully collected, measured to the millimeter and woven into a complex pattern to compose this sweepstakes winner.
