uilding an insurance company that cares for its clients is what Jennifer DahlblomVarness was inspired to do when she opened the doors of i-Care Insurance this past January. This brand new agency specializes in life and health insurance and offers a welcoming environment where clients can get one-on-one advice on products that best serve them. Varness has been in the insurance industry for six years and recently made the decision to start her own independent agency. Varness says she appreciated the small neighborhood feel of her previous office, and wanted to keep that same spirit of community when she opened her own business in Maplewood – just one block away from St. Paul’s East Side. “I have good relationships with my clients and really get to know them as well as their families,” says Varness. “It’s called i-Care because I really do care about my clients.” Varness is an insurance broker, meaning she is independent and can recommend products from many companies, including most big-name companies. This gives her clients a wide variety of options to choose from, so they can pick one that fits their needs. Options can be customized for each individual – even a husband and wife may choose different plans. Varness adds that the major changes happening in the health care field factored into her decision to open her own business. “I wanted to be ahead of the game with that knowledge and be able to answer questions for my clients when everything does change,” she says, adding that in today’s economy many employers may be dropping benefits to keep costs down. Specializing in Medicare, Varness often works with senior citizens – a growing population now that many baby boomers are hitting the age of 65. Working with senior citizens is a pleasure for her, Varness says, and they especially appreciate her knowledge and role as an independent advisor. “They remember and value a simpler time when it was all about the local businesses,” she explains. Varness has chosen to raise her 10-year-old son on St. Paul’s East Side, and says she enjoys the sense of community that the neighborhood brings to her business. Because of this, she also does her part to help the community by serving on the WBABA board of directors, participating in local health fairs and presenting informational community meetings at local libraries and community centers.
