An Installation depends on the place and form of the materials, objects or the elements that are being placed. It is impossible to totally repeat it, as it could only be recreated, but it truly would never be the same. The main characteristic of an Installation is its changeability, depending of the day in time and place that it is being executed The Installation is only exhibited in a determined time and then broken down piece by piece, leaving only the part of the work that is documented as the evidence that existed. That is how the “Path of the EARTH BEING” started, creating the sculptures made out of mud over a wooden base, covered in paper, fabric, and string rope, with a layer of red clay. The red clay used in this Installation is originally from this region of Baja California Sur. Its red because of its high content of ferromagnesian. The elements were placed in areas that had characteristic views of Baja California Sur, and where photographed

FASHION FOR

LOS CABOS By Staci Snider

If you’re considering a trip to Cabo remember the temperatures are warm and this is our least predictable time of year for weather. To prepare for your trip, you will want to pack lightweight summer wear to stay fresh and cool under the our intense summer sun rays of Los Cabos. Breathable cottons, linens, and water friendly fabrics are a must, along with sunglasses and a wide brim hat to keep you in the shade. If for any reason it rains & you are lucky enough to be staying in a LIFESTYLE Villa, the house staff will have set out umbrellas for you to use.

You will want to pack a combination of shorts, skirts, dresses, tank tops, and shirts. The desert breeze can cause some cool nights, so be sure to bring a light jacket, pashmina, pair of trousers, and a maxi dress. Simple cocktail attire is always a necessity when traveling abroad, as you never know where a tropical night will take you. Athletic wear is recommended as there are a lot of fun outdoor activities to do at Lands End. Bring your dri fit wear as it can be used for a multitude of purposes while exploring Baja. As far as shoe wear, I recommend flat sandals for walking around town, havaianas or flip flops are always perfect for the beach, runners for your outdoor activities, and heels for the evening. Don’t forget a clutch for the evening and beach tote for the day. As far as products please bring your sunblock! (Its always best to bring the one you are used to using, but otherwise Sunblock is common here, but more expensive than you are used to.) If you take vitamins or regular medication, be sure to have on hand. While in a foreign country sometimes digestion takes some getting use to, so just in case tums, or pepto are always good to travel with. (Read the article on page 12 in our July edition) If you do forget anything, we do have you covered, Los Cabos is a modernized city with Costco, Walmart & Sams Club. Stay hydrated, keep cool and have fun!

FASHION AN EXPERIENCE Staci Snider Fashion Boutique is not your ordinary women’s boutique, it is more of an atelier that encompasses a fashion experience. “Atelier is the French word for “workshop”, and in English is used principally for the workshop of an artist in the fine or decorative arts, where a principal master and a number of assistants, students and apprentices work together producing pieces that went out in the master’s name. This was the standard way of working for European artists from the Middle Ages to the 18th or 19th century, and common elsewhere in the world. “ Whether you are a local patron or visiting tourist here is an opportunity to see an artist at work from concept to execution in Cabo San Lucas. This exceptional local is situated on Calle Emiliano Zapata and Calle Miguel Hidalgo, in the heart of the downtown area. The walls are adorned with photos from NYC Fashion Week, model shoots from around the globe and inspiration which fuels the daily engine. The creative process can be viewed on site with sketch design, pattern making, fabric cutting, draping, fittings and sewing of garments. Continually working around the clock, whether it is on a new collection, custom orders, or teaching the working staff from employees to students from her alma mater, the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. It is an experience alone to witness the construction process, hear the story behind each piece, and to work intimately with a true fashion designer.

The new season is just around the corner with Spring/Summer 2013 and will debut Menswear with a much anticipated fashion show planned for November in Cabo San Lucas. The coming collection is inspired by surrealist artists Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, along with the one act plotless romantic ballet Les Sylphides. Key fabrics are linens, silks, quality cottons, nylon, and fine gauge knit jersey; all suitable for keeping cool and traveling light. Stay tuned for event details, as it will be a spectacular show for a good cause as proceeds will go to a local charity.

You can purchase Staci Snider fashion apparel off the sales floor or choose to place an individualized order, specializing in Women’s eveningwear, special events, and bridal. A visit to Staci Snider Fashion Boutique is recommended early in your visit to leave ample time for a custom order. If all necessary fabrics and supplies are readily available, a threeday turn around time can be expected for readyto-wear garments. Boutique hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am-8pm or by appointment. You can preview design work on www.stacisnider. net and also contact directly.

HOW SUNBURNS AND

SUN TANS WORK

There is something mysterious about the sun and skin. Why is it that if you go out on a bright summer day and spend an hour in the sun, you get a sunburn? You get a sunburn, that is, unless you happen to have taken the time to get a gradual tan. With a tan you can go out in the sun and nothing happens. Of course, that doesn’t apply if you have “fair skin.” The fair skinned among us never get a tan, so they always get sunburned. Unless of course they are wearing a sunscreen...

Does this make sense? What exactly is a sunscreen? And what is a tan? What is the difference between a tan and a burn? Why can you spread a little blob of lotion on yourself and be protected, but if you forget you are miserable? When you get a tan, what is actually happening is that the melanocytes are producing melanin pigment in reaction to ultraviolet light in sunlight. Ultraviolet light stimulates melanin production. The pigment has the effect of absorbing the UV radiation in sunlight, so it protects the cells from UV damage. Melanin production takes a fair amount of time -that is why most people cannot get a tan in one day. You have to expose yourself to UV light for a short period of time to activate the melanocytes. They produce melanin over the course of hours. By repeating this process over 5 to 7 days pigment builds up in your cells to a level that is protective. The previous paragraph applies to Caucasians. In a variety of other races, melanin production

16

is continuous, so the skin is always pigmented to some degree. In these races the incidence of skin cancer is much lower because cells are constantly protected from UV radiation by melanin. Melanocytes actually produce two different pigments: eumelanin (brown) and phaeomelanin (yellow and red). Red heads happen to produce more phaeomelanin and less eumelanin, which is why they don’t tan very well. In albinos, the chemical pathway that produces melanin cannot proceed because an enzyme called Tyrosinase is missing. Therefore albinos have no melanin in their skin, hair or irises.

SKIN DAMAGE AND SUNBURN

SUNSCREENS

If you are Caucasian and you don’t have a tan, then the cells in your skin are not protected from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. You are therefore an easy target for sunburn if you spend too much time in the sun. As anyone who has had sunburn knows, sunburn leaves your skin red and extremely painful. In severe cases the skin forms blisters.

Sunscreens block or absorb ultraviolet light. You can block UV light with opaque creams like the white zinc oxide cream that you see lifeguards putting on their noses. You can also absorb UV radiation in much the same way that melanin does. All sunscreens are labeled with an SPF, or Sun Protection Factor. The SPF acts like a multiplying factor. If you would normally be OK in the sun for 10 minutes and you apply an SPF 10 sunscreen, you will be OK in the sun for 100 minutes. In order for the sunscreen to work, however, you have to apply plenty and it has to stay on. You should apply it about half an hour before going out in the sun (or the water) so it can bind to your skin -- if you don’t, then it is very easy for the sunscreen to wash off.

When you get a sunburn, your skin is actually damaged by UV radiation and your body is responding to the damage. What you are really getting is cellular damage from ultraviolet radiation. The body responds to the damage with increased blood flow to the capillary bed of the dermis in order to bring in cells to repair the damage. The extra blood in the capillaries causes the redness -- if you press on sunburned skin it will turn white and then return to red as the capillaries refill. The SPF rating, by the way, applies only to UVB radiation.

PRODUCTS THAT TREAT SUNBURN Chances are you have products to ease your sunburn pain in at least two places in your house: the medicine cabinet and the kitchen. The nonprescription medications in your medicine cabinet can help relieve the discomfort of sunburn, headache and fever. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin are all good choices. If the pain is severe and your fever remains high, call your doctor. Remember, if you’re treating a child, use aspirin only with a doctor’s approval. You also can apply an aloe vera gel or lotion several times a day to relieve pain and keep your skin moist. A spray-on product will be the easiest to apply. Avoid heavy creams that require rubbing the skin a lot, which can cause irritation and likely be hard to do because of the pain. If you are here in Cabo and staying in a resort or private villa, you are almost certain to find natural Aloe Vera which is the best, but be prepared to smell kind of funky for a while & make sure you are careful as it stains everything, so be prepared to pay for soiled linens. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams will help relieve the inflammation and irritation caused by sunburn. Don’t treat sunburn with “-caine” products like benzocaine or lidocaine -- these products can irritate your skin because the chemicals in them can cause allergies. Medical experts also recommend that you avoid petroleum jelly. One of the quickest and cheapest ways to obtain sunburn relief is to immerse a T-shirt or towel in cool water, wring it out and place it on the affected area. Then sit or lie in front of a fan or air conditioner. Cool water not only feels great on sunburned skin but is also important for hydration. Sunburned skin is inflamed and hot. Your body loses fluid through your skin because of your sunburn. Drinking lots of water is another good idea, as it will prevent dehydration. Don’t let your guard down after you’ve taken your pain relievers, bathed in an oatmeal or vinegar bath, and finally gotten past the worst of the discomfort. It is possible to get a burn on top of a burn. Until your sunburn is completely healed, cover it and stay out of the sun. Follow these basic rules to protect yourself from sunburn: • Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. • Wear a broad-brimmed hat and tightly woven, yet loose-fitting, clothing. • Use sunscreen early (15-30 minutes before sun exposure), often and liberally. • Wear sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of UV rays. • Don’t be fooled by clouds. You can get sunburn on sunny days or cloudy days, and if you’re outside all day, one application won’t be enough -- even if you’re not in the water. 18

the lifestyle magazine · September 2012

WHAT DO SPF NUMBERS MEAN? This summer, sunscreens with SPF 70 hit the market. The fair-skinned of the world might be tempted to take this as an open invitation to slather some on, jump onto a lounge chair and bake for 12 hours without getting burned. The higher the number, the better, right? Before you throw caution to the wind, though, you should know a few things about SPF or Sun Protection Factor. What is it, exactly? What do the numbers mean, and how high can they go? To determine a sunscreen’s SPF, testers round up 20 sun-sensitive people and measure the amount of UV rays it takes them to burn without sunscreen. Then they redo the test with sunscreen. The “with sunscreen” number is divided by the “without sunscreen” number, and the result is rounded down to the nearest five. This is the SPF. SPF numbers start at 2 and have ju st recently reached 70. To figure out how long you can stay in the sun with a given SPF, use this equation: Minutes to burn without sunscreen x SPF number = maximum sun exposure time For example, if you burn after 10 minutes of sun exposure, an SPF of 15 will allow you to be in the sun for up to 150 minutes without burning.

But before you grab your calculator and head for the beach, you should know that this equation is not always accurate. People usually use far less sunscreen than the amount used in testing. In the real world, the average sun worshipper uses half the amount of sunscreen used in the laboratory, which could result in sunburn in half the time.

UVB ABSORPTION So, now we know that a higher SPF number means more sun-exposure time. It also indicates the level of UVB absorption, but this number doesn’t increase exponentially, which can be confusing. For example, an SPF of 15 absorbs 93.3 percent of UVB rays, but an SPF of 30 absorbs 96.7 percent. The SPF number has doubled, but the absorption rate has increased by only 3.4 percent. Because of the confusion about UVB absorption, the FDA proposed a cap on SPF numbers. Any sunscreen higher than 30 SPF would be a “30plus.” Thirty was the decided cap because above that, the percentage of UVB absorbed and overall protection of the skin increases only slightly, but people may misinterpret these higher SPF numbers as a much higher level of protection or even a guarantee of all-day protection.

HURRICANE SEASON

IN CABO By Arandi Torres.

When the heat in Northern Hemisphere really starts to kick in and the sea water starts to warm up dropping the atmospheric pressure down… it is definitely time to bring our patio furniture indoors! 20

It is no secret that Global Warming has, amongst many consequences, a direct effect in the atmospheric instability of the planet. The hurricanes and storms would be bigger and stronger in our planet´s attempt to cool down due to high temperatures, which we know as the “EL NIÑO” effect. The hurricane season officially starts on June 1st and ends on November 30th; but they are more frequent in both August and September. CABOS’ HURRICANE BACKGROUND Statistically Los Cabos has very few hurricanes as we are truly blessed to have the cooler Pacific ocean that helps squat the growth and helps veer the direction of storms away from the Penninsula. But when it comes to insurance, that’s something you shouldn’t gamble on. Not many of us remember Liza, back in 1976, which destroyed a dyke in La Paz and became the deadliest hurricane Baja California Sur has ever experienced. Who doesn’t remember Juliette, with almost 40 inches of rain in 2001? (an adult could be knocked over by a stream of 12 inches). And after several hurricanes like Ignacio and Marty in 2003, we received John (2006), which had a very weird behavior. The wind ripped off many roofs in homes located on the East Cape, causing losses for over 60 million USD. One of the very few off-season hurricanes, Omeka was formed on December 18th of 2010, and was dissipated 4 days later in South Pacific. Celia, a category 4 hurricane, which moved away from land, was an early hurricane on June of 2010. We only had 8 storms on 2010 and 11 on 2011. Up to date, we’ve had 8 storms along this season. However, non have gotten close to our area, but in mid August we received our first rain fall in close to 4 years and received over 12 inches of rain in 72 hours. We hadn’t seen this type of rain fall since 2001. Many homes had leaks & flooded areas as the constant rain plugged drain holes with the heavy flow. TAKING THE BEST ADVANTAGE OF YOUR HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE POLICY Don’t you hate when after paying your premium for years, when you have a loss and call your insurance representative, you find out that you were not covered for “that particular loss”? You can make sure that your insurance is going to pay at the moment of the truth. After all, you wouldn’t know if you have a good or bad coverage, until you have to use it, right? 21

SOMETIMES IT RAINS IN

PARADISE!

After the worst drought season in 70 years, we had almost 12 inches of rain!

The constant rain that kept hammering us last Tuesday August 14th through Thursday August 16th has a bitter-sweet feeling into it. A wide zone of atmospheric instability in the Pacific caused the first rain in Baja California Sur after the worst drought season in decades. What is the down-size of this heavy rain? 15,000 families in Los Cabos, Loreto and Mulegé were affected by damages cause by the heavy rain, as usual mostly in low income areas. The poor often build in arroyos, and even if they are on high ground, their homes are often made of tar paper and cardboard, not cinder block. In this latest rain 400 people were evacuated from their homes. The state and city government as well as good citizens delivered 12,000 boxes of groceries and blankets to families who lost their cardboard homes to the rain. Damage to tourist areas, which are built with more substantial materials, was limited to the maintenance rooms of the RIU resort, and damaged pavement on the road to the Cabo San Lucas airport. A portion of the brand new fourlane to Todos Santos got washed out while mountains of sand were washed down the side of the hill and onto the fourlane between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose. Dozens of little spontaneous arroyos were carved into the side of the hill as the water rushed down to the sea. About 5,000 families were left without power in Los Cabos, most of them squatters who had illegally tapped into the power grid. The Cabo bay was closed for business due to the storm, so there was no fishing. The next day, however, the catch of the day was dorado which follows debris washed out to sea where smaller fish abound. Heavy equipment was sent in from La Paz, our state’s capitol city, to aid in the cleaning of streets that were full of sand. 24

LIFESTYLE LOcal News

The rain fell mostly in Cabo and San Jose, not affecting the East Cape so much, although a light rain came down on Los Barriles, Santiago, Miraflores, La Paz and Todos Santos. Loreto got some heavy rain, which damaged their access road from north and south, leaving the town incommunicado for a day. THE BENEFITS OF THE RAIN The cacti are happy though, and so are local ranchers and farmers, as we were nearing our fourth year of drought conditions. And now the sun is shining again in Cabo, even though there is still some forecasted rain for the weeks to come. Even with all damages caused by this unusual, but prayed for, rain it is important to be grateful that it finally rained after 261 days without any raindrop whatsoever. After having less that a half of inch of rain until this July, we register almost 12 inches of rain only in Cabo San Lucas! The Mexican Government declared on February a state of emergency for Los Cabos, Loreto and Muleg茅 counties for the worst drought season in 70 years. Both farming and livestock activities had to be momentarily interrupted in important parts of Baja California Sur for a few months affecting local economy though the state. Now, with this past rain, a renewed hope in reactivating local farming economy is possible. In order to prevent a similar disastrous season, the new dam LA PALMA is almost finished in Los Cabos. GOOD NEWS AFTER ALL!

CABO SAN LUCAS:

MEXICAN PORT WITH ITS

BRITISH INHERITANCE

Between 1828 & 1830, a group of thirteen British sailors arrived to Cabo San Lucas in Lower California, as it was known back then. They arrived by accident since the ship they were traveling on had problems during its course from Great Britain to Australia. They had to detour because of the harsh Pacific winds and currents, arriving to Cabo San Lucas. Villagers in Cabo San Lucas were used to see sailors in distress so when this group arrived to land they received aid and a welcome, especially by Don Cipriano Ceseña Ovalle. It was Don Cipriano Ceseña who welcomed these sailors into his home & informed them when the next ship was arriving from Acapulco to Philippines. He offered shelter and work while they waited to continue their journey to Australia. The time passed and when the ship arrived to Cabo San Lucas, only one, William Wilkes, decided to depart with his wife and baby daughter to Australia according the letters sent by William to his brother Frank Wilkes in 1849, who decided to stay in Cabo San Lucas since, in their own words, the place was beautiful and captivating and the locals kind and helpful. It has been said that these sailors were whalers, given that the ship they were traveling was a whaling ship but everything indicates that was not their profession, since according to letters, they were heading to Australia to seek fortune. They were looking for pearls, corals and gemstones. The one that actually made it to Australia, William Wilkes, had no luck and decided to become a farmer in small scale. The Englishmen that settled in Cabo San Lucas were: 1. Frank Wilkes 2. Steve Green 3. John Leggs 4. John Collins 5. William Fisher 6. Thomas Ritchie 7. John Hasting 8. Peter Robinson 9. John Maclish 10. John Gavarine

After a few years John Hasting, Peter Robinson, John Maclish and John Gavarine moved from Cabo San Lucas but stayed within Lower California. According to the information found in the family Guide of Baja California from 1700-1900, Pablo L. Martinez quotes: “In the southern tip (of Baja California) most of these immigrants were deserters of whaling ships than ran away of the life onboard. The locals called them improperly as Pirates…” And mentions the following; • John Collins • John Leggs • John Hasting • John Maclish • José Antonio Gavarine (it was known after as Gavaráin in Spanish) • Thomas Ritchie • Peter Robinson Some of these gentlemen were working in bad economic times in whaler ships from Norway, Austria, England and America. Some of them changed their name or simply translate it to Spanish. Hence John Hasting was known as Jacinto Fiol; John Maclish was Juan Aguilar, Thomas Ritchie was Tomás Ceseña but return to his original name; Gavarine changed his name to Jose Antonio Gavaráin, Peter Robinson just translated his name to Pedro, and the other Johns translated their names to Juan. John Leggs became Juan Márquez but later changed to his original last name, having only one child under the Márquez surname and the rest became the Leggs family.

All of them were brave and young sailors that left their country and families in Britain, their language and culture and embraced other language and culture leaving maybe a better life in England or with more commodities. They never return to London, not even to visit. What made them stay? Why they decided not to continue their journey or return home? Mr. Gregorio Herrera Martinez tells that his great grandfather was talking with Tommy Ritchie and wondered “Hey, why did you stay, here in this place, so dry, a harsh & hot deserted land?” He just responded, “Because the sea reminds me the sea in Venice.” And added “Besides, I don´t see this land the way you describe it, I see it in a whole different way and I fell in love with it, of its sea, beaches and mountains. This land has given me without richness without even asking for it, the men are gentlemen and the ladies are gorgeous… the people are simple beautiful; and I love having a small boat that takes me anywhere I want… And you, why didn´t you return to Puebla?” Source: “El San Lucas que yo conocí” by María Faustina Wilkes Ritche

CAPTAIN

“OLD RITCHIE” Captain Ritchie was a singular man and outside the common way of life. He had an adventurous spirit which distinguishing character of the first pioneers of this coast, and owned a generous heart always ready to give when needed. He had that peculiar faculty which sees justice from an abstract point of view, and was guided by the internal principles of his conscience rather than the dictates of convention or the urgency of the laws of society. At seventeen years old, he fled the English whaling ship and settled in Cabo San Lucas for more than 50 years. He had two Mexican spouses (though some say seven). He founded a great family and by the last years of his life was an absolute judge in the district whose word was considered law. The parties in his court were always satisfied with their verdict and never appealed to a superior authority as is often the case in outposts or unpolished communities. Ritchie rarely left his house, with occasional trips to La Paz and Loreto, and on one occasion to San Francisco where the noise and bustle were too much for the old man who was happy to seek the seclusion of his Pacific home. Every sailor had an amiable word for Old Ritchie and he was spoken of with such respect it was a safe indication that the sterile point of Cabo San Lucas had a genteel heart and an active brain. His resting place is much beloved and calls forth many pleasing memories of an old friend who was widely respected, even idolized. J. Ross Browne, a journalist and explorer, came to the Peninsula in the mid-1860’s and published an article in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, October 1868 entitled Explorations in Lower California. He writes: Captain Ritchie, an old Englishman, lives here. He is one of the few Europeans in Cabo, and I mention him since he is one the institutions of the country. Forty years ago he was an assistant cabin boy of a ship that belonged to his uncle. He became fascinated by the enchantments of a dark-haired lady of San Jose, lowered one of the boats and hid in it until the ship had weighed anchor. Since then he has lived in Cabo or its neighborhood. His history is one of marked adventure and is full of interest. Ritchie has been host of all the navigators who have visited the coast in the last forty years. Dealing in ranching, fishing, farming and import/export have been some of his occupations. He now has a large family of mixed race around him, none of which speaks English. He has made and lost a dozen fortunes mainly through selling and drinking whiskey. No man is better known on the coast of the Pacific than ¨Old Ritchie¨. He has undergone many tribulations at the hands of the Mexicans. Without cause they have robbed him, have made him pay taxes, have taken him prisoner and have threatened to kill him. He is now considered an inevitable and unavoidable citizen of this country.

At one time, his property was confiscated and he was thrown into prison in Mazatlan. An English warship threatened to bomb the city if he was mistreated or abused. Because he survived the severe wounds inflicted upon him, which would have killed any other man on Earth, it was said it would be miracle if he were ever to die. Captain Ritchie´s house in Cabo San Lucas is a hearth to adventurers of all parts of the world. - Admirals, commodores, captains, common sailors and pirates all took refuge there. Miners, merchants and cattleman all made use of the house. In a word, the door was open to all. All that have money can pay; to those who do not he gives food and drink for their companionship from his generous heart. No traveler went away from his door without rest and support. Since the opening of the mines in San Antonio and el Triunfo, Captain Ritchie has done good business, bringing passengers and cargo to the mines. Whalers find it advisable to arrive at the house with fresh beef so that there is always enough meat for all.

Once you’ve finished the School Line, you’ll continue your tour through the remaining 7 lines reaching up to 2,673 ft. You’ll be flying across canyons, passing close to rock formations and watching the oasis below from bird’s eye view. And since we know everything is more fun when done with friends, some of our zip lines are especially designed to be performed in tandem. On those lines, if you’d like, we can connect you with one, two or even three of your friends so that you can fly together! During the entire tour you’ll be accompanied by two guides—one on the take off platform, who will connect you to the line, and one on the landing platform, who will disconnect you.

LAND’S END (The Point) Depths start out around 25 ft. with the opportunity to dive the canyon. Calm conditions allow you to get up close and personal with the resident sea lions that call this spot home. Loads of structure and life-covered rock walls are home to tropical fish, lobsters, hawkfish and even schools of tuna. Eels are another common sighting. Currents can get a little strong and unpredictable so dives here are best suited for the intermediate to advanced diver.

DIVE LOCATIONS

NEPTUNE’S FINGER

PELICAN ROCK SAND FALLS

Also located in Cabo Bay, this dive brings you to rock piles and boulders covered in sea sponges, gorgonias and sea fans. The usual colorful display of tropical fish complete the picture with a good chance of a visit from a sea turtle. With the help of local protection agencies and volunteers, sea turtles are making a comeback here in Cabo.

Located in Cabo Bay alongside the rocky cliffs that lead the way to Land’s End, this area offers dives starting at 20 feet. Drop down the walls with sea fans and schools of goat fish, puffers, eels, parrotfish and angels. Other common sightings are lobsters, jacks, rays and the occasional white tip reef shark. Most famous for Jacques Cousteau’s discovery of the “Sand Falls”, this is a great choice for a quick trip that’s only a 5 minute boat ride from the Cabo marina.

NORTH WALL This is one of the best locations for beginning divers and those taking “resort” courses but it still holds wonders that even very experienced divers will enjoy

CHILES RELLENOS (STUFFED PEPPERS)

6 Servings Preparation time: 1 hour

Welcome to our Culinary section. Here we will be exploring some of our favorite traditional and creative cooking & mixology recipes. Sometimes having that favorite dish, allows you to experience Cabo & Mexico while you are thousands of miles away. That special dish or favorite cocktail might be exactly what the doctor ordered, especially when you are dying to come to Cabo. We hope you enjoy it & please feel free to share your favorite recipes, if they are creative & unique we would love to share it with everyone. For this edition, we picked one of our favorite meals, Chiles Rellenos or stuffed peppers. This meal works for any occasion & can be made vegetarian or filled with ground beef, seafood & even chicken. Buen provecho! Ingredients: 6 Poblano chiles 1/2 kg of Chihuahua cheese cut into chunks 10 egg whites 1/2 cup flour 6 red tomatoes 1/2 onion diced 3 cloves of garlic 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon of chicken broth 2 bay leaves 1/2 liter of vegetable oil Preparation of chile Poblano (pepper) : Prepare the pepper by placing it over an open fire. You can do this on a BBQ or over the element of your gas stove. Make sure you turn the pepper often. Once the pepper is soft, you can take it off the fire, place it in a Ziploc bag, to make it sweat with the steam, this will make peeling the thin layer of skin off. Open one side of the pepper and stuff with cheese, you can hold the pepper closed if needed with toothpicks, but don’t forget you have them in there! Preparation of salsa: Blend tomatoes, garlic, and onion, tablespoon of chickenA broth & 1 cup of water. Add to deep skillet pan along with 2 bay leaves and heat on medium heat.

52

Beat egg whites until stiff, dip chilies in egg whites and then in flour. Meanwhile, heat 1/4 inch of oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place the peppers in the hot oil, and fry on both sides until golden. Drain peppers on paper towels, let simmer for 30 min & serve stuffed peppers with the sauce over it and a dollop of sour cream. Do you have a special Chile Relleno recipe that you would like to share? Send us an email and show us your creation.

DAMIANA INTRODUCTION: HISTORY, CHEMISTRY, GARDENING

This section is also about sharing our favorite recipes, fun facts & history behind specific local & international cocktails, liqueurs & wines. You can be anywhere on the planet, but as you savor your favorite cocktail, it can completely transport you back to your favorite vacation destination. We hope these recipes can hold you over until your next visit. Please feel free to share with us and our readers your favorite cocktail recipes & if you have a restaurant or bar in Los Cabos that you like to have that specific drink. Salud !

DAMIANA: NATIVE SOUTH BAJA PLANT Damiana (Turnera diffusa or Turnera aphrodisiaca) is a woody plant with several stems that grows in hot and humid parts of Mexico, Central and South America. It can also be found under such names as “hierba de la pastora,” “Mexican damiana,” and “old woman’s broom”. The plant has approximately 1-2 m in height. Its leaves are 10-25 cm long and they are toothed on the edge. The upper side of the leaves is smooth and pale green, while the lower one is hairy on the ribs. The leaves have a pleasant scent of chamomile. Damiana blooms during the whole summer with yellow flowers that rise from the leaves’ axils. The plant has small fruits that resemble a capsule divided into three parts. They are sweet and smell like fig.

DAMIANA MARGARITA RECIPE The Damiana Margarita is very popular in the Los Cabos area of Mexico. Damiana Margarita * 2 oz 100% blue agave tequila * 1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice * 1-1/2 oz Damiana liqueur - Combine and shake with ice for 30 seconds then strain into a salt-rimmed (optional) martini glass garnished with a lime slice.

Damiana herb has a long and interesting history of use in the folk medicine. The indigenous population praises the plant for its antidepressant, diuretic, tonic, hypoglycemic, and antibacterial properties and use it as a general tonic to improve their health conditions. It was also used by the tribes as an aphrodisiac, because people thought the plant had the ability to improve sexual function.

BISBEE’S

Bisbee’s Black & Blue Tournaments have been taking place in Baja California Sur, Mexico for over 30 years. The Bisbee’s are currently producing three tournaments – Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore in Buenavista which takes place each July, and the Los Cabos Offshore and Black & Blue Marlin Tournament which take place every October in Cabo San Lucas.

LIFESTYLE Fishing

Started in 1980 by Bob Bisbee, the Black & Blue Marlin Tournament has grown from six teams with a purse of $10,000 to more than 150 teams with millions of dollars on the line. In 2006 the Black & Blue had its biggest overall cash payout of $4,165,960. This was, and remains, the largest payout in sportfishing history. In 2000 Bisbee’s expanded to the east side of the Baja California Sur peninsula with the East Cape Offshore Tournament in Buenavista. In addition to marlin, this tournament included dorado and tuna and became so popular that a third event with the same format was started in 2002–the Los Cabos Offshore Tournament. Over the years each tournament has developed its own personality with the East Cape Offshore being a laid back “Cabo fishing as it used to be” type of event, the Los Cabos which takes place just days before the Black & Blue and nick-named the “Little Bisbee’s”, is a very social event full of camaraderie where friends can meet, swap stories and get in a few days of fishing before the “Big Show”. The final tournament in the series, Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament, is hard to describe if you’ve never been there. It’s five days of organized chaos full of hard-core excitement. With the beautiful and lively city of Cabo San Lucas as the backdrop, thousands of people crowd the marina walkways to shop, party and watch huge fish being weighed in at the scales in front of the world-famous Puerto Paraiso Entertainment Plaza. The Black & Blue is a once in a lifetime experience you’ll never forget, whether you take home memories or millions.

$1 MILLION MARLIN,

CAUGHT 9 MINUTES TOO LATE

OCTOBER 22ND, 2010 written by therockyriver.com staff “I just want a massage and to go to bed,” said Carl Riley, the angler who landed an 800-pound Blue Marlin worth up to $1 Million or more, 9 minutes after the weigh-in deadline had passed. This heartbreaking story happened on the very first day of the 3-day Bisbee’s Black & Blue Jackpot Tournament – the richest marlin event in the world, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Around 3 pm, 20 miles off shore in the Sea of Cortez, Texan Carl Riley hooked into an 800-pound monster of a Blue Marlin that took him and his boat crew – Team Great Escape, five hours to land. Once Riley was able to haul the Marlin in the boat, they made the hour-long race back to the scales to weigh in before the 9 pm tournament deadline. They pulled in at 9:09 pm, and were disqualified. The kicker is the Marlin would have been landed much sooner, and the race to get back to the scales would not have been a factor, except that the huge fish died during the fight in the depths of the ocean. Riley was forced to reel in nearly a half ton of dead weight against the ocean currents, and rules prevent any of his teammates from helping him. “I’m not in that good of shape. I should have worked out,” said Riley. The Marlin blew away the eight other fish weighed in the first day 56

of the tournament, and would have guaranteed Riley and his crew a prize of $430,000. If no other teams land a Marlin that tops his, Riley and his team would have won over $1 Million. To add insult to injury, the likelihood of any of the 103 teams catching a Marlin bigger than Riley’s, is slim to none. The fact is, Marlin around 800-pounds are incredibly rare in the area off of Cabo San Lucas. Team Reelaxe (who would have taken second place if not for those 9 minutes) claimed the win in the first day with a 599-pound Black Marlin. On Thursday, Team Great Escape was able to land a 430-pound Marlin – half the weight of the first catch – that held the lead for day two going into the evening. Bisbee’s Black & Blue competition celebrated its 30-year anniversary this year. The tournament brings challengers in from all over the globe, handing out record checks unseen in any other type of fishing tournament. In 2008, the winners of the Bisbee’s tournament took home a first place check worth $2,162,035. The entry fee across the board for the Black & Blue competition is $63,100 per team.

LIFESTYLE tips

DRIVING IN MEXICO: A SHORT PRACTICAL GUIDE

1. Buy Mexican Auto Insurance. Mexican auto insurance is a must if you plan to do anything more than a quick hop across the border since, in the case of an accident Mexican authorities will not accept foreign auto insurance policies. Any Mexican auto insurance coverage you purchase should include claims adjusters that will come to the scene of an accident and an attorney. This becomes very important since, in the event of an accident, you are not allowed to move your vehicle and you may be detained by the police in the event that anyone is hurt until fault can be established. 2. Be aware that not all roads are in the best of conditions. Although over the last 6 to 8 years there has been an increase in the number of four-lane toll roads throughout the country, some of the minor roads, for instance those between small towns, are more likely to be paved with cobblestone instead of asphalt and, either way, they all have their share of pot holes and ruts to be careful about. 3. Although there are reports of people being stopped and their property being stolen while on an isolated road, there are few reports of people actually being injured. The best way to avoid this is to drive during the day and not to stop for hitchhikers. Also beware of any foreign objects in the road; these are normally placed there so that an unsuspecting driver will be forced to stop. 4. Try to restrict driving to daylight hours. This is common sense wherever you drive since road signs are easier to read, road hazards are easier to see and avoid and there are normally more cars traveling the same road you are so there is less chance of anything bad happening. Always be aware of livestock. On most U.S. roads, livestock is unheard of except in rural areas. In Mexico, however, livestock creates a large problem because of a lack of fencing around the highways. Livestock are normally left to roam wherever they can find food and this is sometimes near a well traveled road. Each year there are less and less sightings of livestock along the corridor highway. The new highway to La Paz also is wonderful as they have the entire highway fenced off so we won’t be seeing as many as before, but its always good to be aware. 5. Remember that most people do not use their turn signals and not all cars you see on the road have functioning brake lights. Avoid accidents by keeping your distance, using your turn signals and being aware of those who don’t. 6. Always know who has the right of way. This is sometimes difficult because, 60

the lifestyle magazine · September 2012

LIFESTYLE tips

even though you may be in the right, if the “the other guy” is bigger, he won’t care. This means you will want to slow down at all intersections and look both ways whether you are required to or not; it also means you will want to yield to larger vehicles that want to occupy your same lane space. 7. Always plan your trip ahead of time. Take a good road map along with you and know where your stops are going to be. In the old days, there were sections where you HAD to have an extra tank of gasoline as you wouldn’t make it, now a days, there are PEMEX stations everywhere, but a good rule of thumb is to not let your tank go below 1/4. 8. Remember that here, just as anywhere else; all those things you learned in driving school apply. Keep free space in front, behind and beside you when driving; obey the speed limits; use your turn signals; and always make sure your vehicle is in good condition and that you have plenty of spare parts (i.e. tire, water for the radiator, transmission fluid and oil) before beginning your journey. 9. Buy a basic Spanish phrase book before your trip. Learning how to tell someone you need a mechanic (necesito un mecánico), help changing a tire (necesito ayuda para cambiar la llanta) or directions (dónde está or cómo llego a) can be very useful. Even if you can’t pronounce it quite right, people will usually get the message and be able to effectively communicate to you what you need to know. 10. Mexico’s Driving Signs: you might want to print them out as a reference when driving down. Please keep in mind that measurements are specified in metric so make sure not to get cm and meters confused with feet and inches AUTHOR’S NOTE: Just in case you’re considering risking the trip without Mexican auto insurance, consider the following: • Mexican law is Napoleonic (soon to change) — this means that you are guilty until proven innocent. The person deciding this will most likely be the policeman who arrives at the scene of the accident, especially if you cannot provide proof of Mexican auto insurance and/or failure to have an adjuster appear. • When a traffic accident does occur, the police may impound your vehicle, especially if there is no one there to help you defend your rights such as an insurance adjuster and/or an attorney. Also know that in the event that someone is injured and you are found responsible, you might not only be held liable for those person medical expenses but also for financially supporting them and their dependents until they recover. If you have an attorney he will probably be able to help you negotiate a more reasonable settlement than that which you could negotiate on your own.
