We chose Yandi’s series of work as his pieces have local inspirations & on some paintings he actually used clay gathered from the Miraflores region. President Felipe CalderÓn visits Los Cabos
President Felipe Calderon & Governor Marcos Covarrubias visit a local school to kick start a new “personal I.D.” program that is being implemented for all Mexican children. He also inaugurated a Hospital and lastly attended a meeting with the Private Sector to announce that he is pushing for the G 20 to be hosted in Los Cabos in October 2012 This past summer we had the honor of having our president FELIPE CALDERON visit our state. On this trip, he visited school children to announce a new system for ” Personal I.D.” cards that is being implemented for all national children between the ages of 4 – 17 years old. He also inaugurated a new hospital in San Jose del Cabo “Juan María de Salvatierra” & then went off to a luncheon meeting with State officials & the local business and developer sector. This meeting was held in a resort along the corridor, where security was very tight & well orchestrated. The President officially announced that Mexico will host the 2012 G20 summit for the first time ever & that he is personally naming Los Cabos as his personal choice to host this very important and influential
meeting. He officially announced that a convention center will be built if Los Cabos is chosen as the host of this sought after summit. The Municipality has already donated a piece of land for the future convention center where many meetings will take place. The President stated that Los Cabos fits all of the criteria necessary which include: a safe destination, high standard service tourism based service providers, good infrastructure & between 8-10,000 high standard hotel rooms. The President was in a great mood, joking & speaking frankly with the attendees of the meeting. Everyone left the meeting with a true sentiment of hope & excitement to know that Los Cabos is a top contender for this important world summit. Not only will it
help economically, but it will help combat the overwhelming negative & misleading press that confuses travelers about the general safety in Mexico. The President also commented that the new proposed highway between San Jose del Cabo & Cabo San Lucas is a go, as all entitlements & zoning have been authorized. There’s a little more red tape to go through, but that project is a go. Gracias Señor Presidente por su visita y por creer en nosotros, sus palabras nos han llenado de esperanza. Event held in Todos Santos. October 12 is the date of the festival of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the patron saint of Todos Santos. This date is celebrated as the founding of the town of Todos Santos. There are usually activities, including a fair and live music in the plaza, most of the week of the 12th. There is dancing to live music in the evenings on the zocalo. And lots of food and drink.

This day also celebrates Columbus’ arrival to the Americas, and the historical origins of the Mexican mestizo race which blended the Spanish and the indigenous.

18th Fiesta de Cabo San Lucas
Is a festival which celebrates the patron saint of Cabo San Lucas. Every October 18th, streets are closed off downtown for a parade. The festival features dancing, music and food vendors.

Whale Migration Oct 15th - April 15th
Starting October until mid-April, all along the peninsula you will be able to see the migrating whales. Many whales enjoy the warm waters of Los Cabos, including the Gray Whale, Blue Whale, Sperm Whale, Humpback and Fin Whale. Some of the whale activity viewable from shore includes breaching (jumping into the air), sounding (showing the tail fin as they dive) and spyhopping (where the whale lifts its head to the surface and looks around).

A beach of a time! A rare view of a magical beach in Cabo San Lucas Written by Ali Ordonez
When you live in paradise, you truly have to continually remind yourself how lucky you are. An experience like this is one of those that puts it all into perspective. What an experience this was. Juliane Warriner- CEO of A Matter of Taste (one of Cabo’s Top Catering Companies & a long time friend) & I decided that we have to see this natural wonderful occurrence first time by SUP. Living here over 15 years we had experienced it by air, boat and by hiking to it, but never on our Stand up paddle boards. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Stand Up Paddle Surfing or SUP is the worlds fastest growing sport. I am very fortunate to have been involved in the early days of this sport as one of my brothers (Sean Ordonez) has been closely tied to the pioneering of SUP and other water sports, including: Wave sailing (windsurfing in BIG waves), tow in surfing (Towed into waves by wave runners because the waves are too big to catch paddling), kite boarding & no SUP.

There is a lot of talk on how often this phenomenon happens, but Mother Nature in this sense doesn’t adhere to a specific calendar. It has to do with the consistency of the currents, wind direction and ground swells over the past months that make this possible. So as a rule of thumb its been every other year or so and the length of exposure, well I don’t think its ever been exposed for so long from my recollection. If anyone has hard facts, please share them we would love to learn more. So, Juliane and I launched from The Medano Beach Club & Cabo SUP location at 6am. We got to the arch at 6:45 am after a nice paddle. The water temperature was actually cooler on Medano beach than out at Lands End. We were happily surprised to see at least 50 or more fishing boats go out that day, which is always a good indicator of the local occupancy. We landed on the beach to the north side of the Arch or as you face the Arch from inside the bay to your right. On this beach there was less of a riptide effect, so we opted to go safe and land here. We then crossed over to Lands End by jumping a small rock between outgoing and incoming waves. Once on the beach at Land’s End, we were surprised to see a cute couple with their daughter had already beat us out there!. Regardless it was actually a lovely sight to see the father shoot pictures of his wife and daughter.

It makes me think back to the days of Pirates and how they must have felt if they had a similar experience. Did they bury treasures here? I am sure their rude and rough nature must have swept away for a bit with joy and happiness as they touched ground and experienced Land’s End.
A different view of the Arch
The beach is huge this year, it extends all the way to where the sea lions hang out, this might be a pain for them as they have to walk on sand to get to their usual resting spot. This explains why we saw more
sea lions swimming and simply floating in the water. Visit our shores, you will be greeted with warmth in the air and in the spirits of everyone who welcomes you with open arms. Los Cabos and Baja California Sur is a magical place on earth. Its a destination where you will never run out of things and places to see. land’s end (the point) Depths start out around 25 ft. with the opportunity to dive the canyon. Calm conditions allow you to get up close and personal with the resident sea lions that call this spot home. Loads of structure and life-covered rock walls are home to tropical fish, lobsters, hawkfish and even schools of tuna. Eels are another common sighting. Currents can get a little strong and unpredictable so dives here are best suited for the intermediate to advanced diver.
neptune’s FinGer Also located in Cabo Bay, this dive brings you to rock piles and boulders covered in sea sponges, gorgonias and sea fans. The usual colorful display of tropical fish complete the picture with a good chance of a visit from a sea turtle. With the help of local protection agencies and volunteers, sea turtles are making a comeback here in Cabo.
peliCan roCk sand Falls Located in Cabo Bay alongside the rocky cliffs that lead the way to Land’s End, this area offers dives starting at 20 feet. Drop down the walls with sea fans and schools of goat fish, puffers, eels, parrotfish and angels. Other common sightings are lobsters, jacks,rays and the occasional white tip reef shark. Most famous for Jacques Cousteau’s discovery of the “Sand Falls”, this is a great choice for a quick trip that’s only a 5 minute boat ride from the Cabo marina.

For those of you who’ve had their head in the clouds, there’s a new geek buzzword that has hit the mainstream called ‘cloud computing’, thanks to Apple’s marketing machine. As we all know, technology has changed our vocabulary and grammar quite a bit in the last ten years, creating verbs out of nouns (e.g ‘text’ and ‘message’), and coining catchy phrases such as ‘tweet’ and ‘shoot an e-mail.’ Let’s face it, technology isn’t going away anytime soon, and has become woven into our culture and language, impacting all generations, geographies and lifestyles. Now that we have a cool new buzzword, let’s get one thing straight, it’s not called cloud computing because it had descended from heaven, was touched by God, or is even in the sky for that matter. Cloud computing is just a catchy term for a service that provides you computing power by means of the Internet. By computing power, I mean applications, storage and hosting. Back in the big monolithic computing days, the hip thing to say around the office would be ‘clientserver’ computing or distributed computing environment’. It’s all pretty much the same concept; the
marketing folks just got a hold of the concept and applied a far more user-friendly title so as not to alarm the neophytes. Now that you know that there’s computing power in the sky, what can it do for you and your business? The first thing you need to think about is how valuable your data is. Is it something you need secure and available 100% of the time? Nowadays, documents, contacts, contracts, photos, music, etc. are all things you need securely available whenever and wherever you are. Now that you know there’s a cloud somewhere in which you can put all of these wonderful things, without worry, what does it really cost and how secure is it? Cloud computing services, such as Microsoft’s Azure and Amazon’s EC2 network are very affordable in the beginning. Generally, it’s a pay-perusage type model without any setup fees. You are automatically billed monthly and you don’t have to deal with anyone in person. They allow you a highly available and scalable platform for email, storage and applications with a relatively low cost barrier to entry, as well as an easy to manage web-based interface. One advantage to clout computing which
users may find helpful is that is that you don’t have to be an IT genius to deploy and manage a very scalable and secure n e t w o r k . S o u n d s great, right? It absolutely is, but you also have to remember that in this scenario, you are renting vs. buying and the advantage starts to become a trap as you grow. Using the Cloud is great for startup companies and businesses of around 20-30 users. Beyond that, the scale of economy starts to tip towards a heavy monthly fee with no equity whatsoever in your favor. And, once you are hooked it’s not easy to move to another service or even “de-cloud” without downtime and costly IT professionals helping you. They don’t want you to leave and make it difficult to do so. Take SalesForce.com as good example of a ‘dark could’ in the sky. If you want to get a backup or data dump you need to upgrade to the enterprise version and then send in a request. When they finally send you what you

need, you’ll have no idea the format of the data, or how quickly you can migrate to another platform. In the mean time, your users are still on and racking up a monthly fee on an enterprise plan instead. It’s a painful transition and needs to be factored into the overall cost of doing business in the ‘cloud’. It’s important to consider an exit strategy, as you don’t have control over long term pricing, and the terms of service can change at any time. The net concern about cloud computing is security and privacy. Since your slide slice of heaven is
only as strong as your password, it can easily be compromised unless you keep on top of changing it on a regular basis. Also, do you really think your data is private in a ‘cloud’? I sometimes wonder how easy it would be for a company to mine your valuable contacts and market to them, or even look at your drawings for your next big product patent. There’s a lot of assumed trust that is given to the people who hold your cloud, but can they really ensure that your data is safe? And even if we can trust our cloud holders, it may not be them who will compromise you and your business
