This year we introduced art work by Yandi Monardo in a small selection of our villas, in an effort to showcase local talent and slowly incorporate a Geo Cultural experience for our guests & home owners. We chose Yandi’s series of work as his pieces have local inspirations & on some paintings he actually used clay gathered from the Miraflores region. All his artwork is for sale & the following are some samples.

For more information about Yandi’s work as well as his workshops, you can contact him directly. For our guests in residence, we can schedule a meeting with the artist so he can explain his work & inspiration. E-mail: yandimonardo@yahoo.com.mx Mobile: (624) 174-4145 Web: www.monardoyandi.com

President Felipe Calderon Invites Global Leaders to Los Cabos for 2012 G20 In June we have already written about Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon and his visit to Los Cabos. In June, President Felipe Calderon and Governor Marcos Covarrubias visited a local school to kick start a new “personal I.D.” program that is being implemented for all Mexican children. He also inaugurated a Hospital and lastly attended a meeting with the Private Sector to announce that he is pushing for the G 20 to be hosted in Los Cabos in October 2012. Today we are happy to share with you that last week President Calderon addressed the Group of Twenty (G20) during a work session in Cannes, France and invited the global leaders to join him in Los Cabos, Mexico in June 2012 for the next meeting of the G20 and B20. As the annual G20 Summit comes to an end, preparations are well underway throughout Los Cabos to prepare for more than 7,000 attendees that will arrive in the destination. Referencing ongoing planning, the final communique from the G20, reads “On December 1st. 2011, Mexico will start chairing the G20. We will convene in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, in June 2012, under the Chairmanship of Mexico. Russia will chair the G20 in 2013, Australia in 2014 and

Turkey in 2015. We have also agreed, as part of our reforms to the G20, that after 2015, annual presidencies of the G20 will be chosen from rotating regional groups, starting with the Asian grouping comprising of China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea.” President Calderón further stated, “I want to invite everyone to come to Mexico in June of next year, for the next G-20 and B-20. Believe me, Los Cabos is a little warmer than this place, there is plenty of sun, if you want to experiment with solar energy, etc. such as receiving sunlight on your own body. We will give a big welcome in Mexico this coming year.” With 13,000 total rooms in the destination, Los Cabos will dedicate 11,000 rooms to the G20 Summit, while the

In addition, a new 653,400 square foot Convention Center will house the G20 meetings and events. Designed to accommodate over 6,000 people, the Convention Center represents $100,000,000 investment by the federal government and a $1,500,000 investment from the State of Baja California Sur. The municipality of Los Cabos endowed a 15-acre tract of land which is located alongside a private golf community and boasts magnificent views for the building of the Convention Center, and the Los Cabos Tourism Board has also invested almost $1,000,000 in the project. The Convention Center will be designated a “green” facility, and will be designed with energy efficiency in mind and will be equipped with solar panels. Construction of the center is set to begin during the first week of November. About Los Cabos: Located at the tip of the 1,000-mile long Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos is home to award-winning hotels and resorts, championship golf courses, rejuvenating spas, world-class sport fishing and much more. With a unique landscape of dramatic desert and white sand beaches, Los Cabos is an exotic escape within easy reach of most U.S. cities. About the G20: The G20 was originally established in 1999, in the wake of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, to bring together major advanced and emerging economies to stabilize the global financial market. To tackle the economic crisis that spread throughout the world in 2008, the G20 members were called upon to further strengthen international cooperation. G20 Summits have been held in Washington in 2008, in London and Pittsburgh in 2009, in Toronto and Seoul in 2010 and this year, the G20 will take place in Cannes, France on November 3 – 4. Whale Migration Starting in mid October until mid-April

Starting October until mid-April, all along the peninsula you will be able to see the migrating whales. Many whales enjoy the warm waters of Los Cabos, including the Gray Whale, Blue Whale, Sperm Whale, Humpback and Fin Whale. Some of the whale activity viewable from shore includes breaching (jumping into the air), sounding (showing the tail fin as they dive) and spyhopping (where the whale lifts its head to the surface and looks around).

NEWS Business Marketing Strategy Essentials

You need to have a marketing strategy before you can think a marketing plan. Your marketing strategy may serve you well for a number of years but the details, such as budgets for marketing activities, of the marketing plan may need to be updated every year. Insight Marketing has been founded to provide you marketing strategy and marketing plans, resources, and support needed to understand and implement the core business marketing strategies that will help you succeed in whatever business you may manage. Insight Marketing is run by a consultant group with almost 12 years of experience. The business marketing strategies we offer and promote are designed to help you succeed, how to do the things that make customers love you and become your greatest assets.

Your business marketing strategy is the single biggest factor which determines the success or failure of your business. It doesn’t matter if you sell widgets from an office in your house, or run a multi-million dollar company. It is just that simple. Get it right and you prosper. Get it wrong and you go the way of many others who have failed before you. This is true on main street, and on the internet as well. No matter what you do, the proper business marketing strategy essentials remain the same, only the application of them has to adapt to the needs of your particular business. Do not confuse business marketing with simple advertising. Your business marketing strategy should affect every aspect of how you run your business. It is the heart and soul of a successful business. The business marketing strategy focuses on markets and customers and is just one part of business strategy. Business strategy takes a broader view that includes other business functions such as manufacturing and operations, finance, quality, purchasing and supply chain, and information and communication technology. The marketing mix is an important part of the marketing strategy and consists of the marketing 'tools' you are going to use. But marketing strategy is more than the marketing mix. The marketing strategy sets your marketing goals, defines your target markets and describes how you will go about positioning the business to achieve advantage over your competitors. The marketing mix, which follows from your marketing strategy, is how you achieve that 'unique selling proposition' and deliver benefits to your customers. Blvd. Låzaro Cårdenas Edif. WHALE WATCHING
the gentle giants of the sea of cortez - by sabrina lear

if you’re fortunate to be visiting los cabos in the months of january through march, it’s likely that at some point during your stay you’ll be treated to the sight of whales spouting off shore.

Many whales that feed in northern waters migrate south each year. From mid to late fall, gray whales make the longest migration of any mammal, a 6,000 mile journey from their summer homes in the Bering and Chukchi Seas between Alaska and Siberia, to winter in the warm waters of Baja California and the Sea of Cortez. Averaging a speed of four to five knots, they arrive in late December seeking both shelter from the frigid northern waters and refuge to birth their young. Gray whales (also known as the Pacific gray, California gray or grayback) calve in the protected, shallow lagoons of San Ignacio, Scammon’s, Ojo de Liebre and Magdalena Bay. Bottomfeeding grays are placid shore lovers who spend most of their lives traveling. Once found in Europe and Asia, the gray population is now confined to the North Pacific, from Siberia and Alaska south to Mexico.

L
ike all mammals, the gray whale is warm blooded, breathes air and nurses its young. Moderately large in size, they range in length from 40 to 50 feet and can weigh up to 73,000 pounds, with males smaller than females. Gray in color, hence the name, they are classified as Cetacea, marine mammals that include whales, porpoises and dolphins and belong to Mysticeti, one of the three families of great baleen whales. Grays have no close relatives; they are the single species of the family Eschrichtidae. G
rays, right whales and the family of fin, blue, sei, Bryde’s, minke and humpback whales (balaenopterids) have baleen fringes, made of whalebone, instead of teeth. The baleen lines the upper jaw and works like a large comb, filtering plankton from salt water and, in the grays’ case,

sediment. When the whale’s mouth is full it closes and forces the water out, catching the plankton in the baleen. When all of the residue is filtered, the whale swallows. Unlike other baleen whales, grays are the only whale to bottom feed, staying down for 3 to 5 minutes to eat; leaving a trail of grooves in the ocean floor behind them. They can remain under water for fifteen minutes before running out of air. Grays are characterized by a long snout and double blowhole on top of their head. In place of a dorsal fin, the gray has a hump with dorsal ridges running to it’s flukes (tail).
T
he lagoons frequented by the grays are mid-way to three-quarters of the way down the Baja peninsula and offer optimal conditions for female grays to give birth.

Like all mammals, the gray whale is warm blooded, breathes air and nurses its young.

After a gestation period of thirteen months, newborns enter the world about 15 feet long and weigh around 1,500 pounds. Whale milk is more than 50% fat and 10 times richer than cow’s milk, allowing the calf to build up blubber for the long return trip north in the spring. Mother grays are extremely affectionate, playing constantly and bracing the calf on her back when it needs to rest. In the sheltered lagoons, the calves learn survival skills and build their muscles by swimming against the ocean currents flowing into the calmer waters. The calves weigh around 3,000 pounds and are about 19 feet long when they are ready to leave the lagoon. The grays natural predators are sharks and orcas (killer whales) and mother grays are always on guard for the enemy.

Although each of the lagoons is hundreds of miles or more up the peninsula, whale watching around Los Cabos can be very fruitful. While the gray whale is not the only species you will see (blue, humpback, sperm, Bryde’s, sei, fin, and the occasional orca ply these waters) it is the most commonly sighted whale around Los Cabos. Many male grays travel into the Sea of Cortez, as well as females, once their calves are mature enough to leave the sanctuary of the lagoon. Simply watching these incredible creatures frolicking amongst themselves is an awe-inspiring treat. Spouting, the visible exhaling of air by the whale, is usually your first indication of whale activity, however, you may see breaching, too. Breaching, when the whale leaps almost completely out of the water and falls back with a large splash, is a spectacular sight. Remember that the whales are moving and will stay under for two to five minutes, so try to anticipate what direction they are taking so you are able to focus on the location of their next breach or spout. You’ll also see the whales showing their flukes, which is known as sounding. If you’re in a small boat, Zodiac or kayak, you

will be able to move in much closer and may get an eye-to-eye close-up with a new friend. Called spyhopping, this is where the whale pushes itself up out of the water until he can see his surroundings (and you), and for first time whale watchers this is especially thrilling. I
f you want to see mothers and their calves first hand, whale-watching trips to Magdalena Bay (the closest calving area to Los Cabos) are best made with daytrip fly-in tours The opportunity to pet whales is not uncommon. If you have more time to spend a trip up to San Igancio or Magdalena Bay is a great experience. You can drive up or fly with AeroCalafia. Before you go though, please call us to verify that there are indeed whales inside the lagoon. We just heard that they are anticipating them to enter in late December or early January 2012 & will not be offering trips there until there are enough whales to make the trip worth while. Locally all boating excursions usually do a mixture of snorkeling & whale watching tour. Take advantage of our current special where we are giving a 2 x 1 deal on all whale watching tours to our guests.

CABO TURTLE RELEASE BE PART OF THIS BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE
sea turtles migrate the world’s oceans and have come to Los Cabos beaches to lay their eggs for millions of years. Two of the world’s eight sea turtle species nest in Los Cabos.

The smallest, the Olive Ridley, also known as the golfina, nests June through to December. The golfina feeds on shrimp, jellyfish, snails and algae, and can grow to 26 inches long, weighing up to 90 pounds. The largest marine turtle, the Laud, or leatherback, nests on our beaches from November through February. Leatherbacks grow up to 70 inches long, weighing up to 1,300 pounds. Its favorite food is jellyfish, and it will dive up to one kilometer in search of food. Golfinas, and especially leatherbacks, are endangered species, suffering from the effects of long lines, fishing nets, development, and illegal poaching. T
he Campamento Tortuguero Don Manuel Orantes is a turtle monitoring and hatchling release program with a protected nursery on the beach next to the San José del Cabo estuary. Run by the Los Cabos municipal government, a core group of staff led by a biologist patrol the beaches for turtle activity, transferring eggs to the nursery for release during nesting season. In Cabo San Lucas, the nonprofit ASUPMATOMA operates a similar program on Pacific beaches, along with a weeklong turtle camp program for the public during the Olive Ridley nesting season each fall. Most mature sea turtle females return to the beach of their birth, called a natal beach, to dig their nests and lay their eggs at night. Only about one in 1,000 of their offspring will survive the treacherous journey from the nest to maturity. After incubating for about two months, they hatch, and take several days to claw their way out of the nest, instinctively making their way to the sea, following the moon and the horizon. Many fall prey to birds and sand crabs as they struggle to reach the shore, others are led off track

by deep grooves left from vehicular traffic and disorienting artificial lighting from beachfront hotels and residential areas. Once in the ocean, they face new predators or are victims of long line fishing nets, poaching and pollution.
S
ea turtle nursery programs greatly improve hatchling survival rates through the first critical stage of their lives. The tiny hatchlings are returned to their nesting area, and

released close to the sea at sunrise or sunset. Some programs groom the sand smooth to make the journey to the sea easier. How can you get involved? Donate, volunteer, sponsor a turtle through ASUPMATOMA or participate in a release program, and please don’t drive, take ATVs, or horses on the beach.

Only about one in 1,000 of their offspring will survive the treacherous journey from the nest to maturity.

LAND’S END (The Point) Depths start out around 25 ft. with the opportunity to dive the canyon. Calm conditions allow you to get up close and personal with the resident sea lions that call this spot home. Loads of structure and life-covered rock walls are home to tropical fish, lobsters, hawkfish and even schools of tuna. Eels are another common sighting. Currents can get a little strong and unpredictable so dives here are best suited for the intermediate to advanced diver.

NEPTUNE’S FINGER Also located in Cabo Bay, this dive brings you to rock piles and boulders covered in sea sponges, gorgonias and sea fans. The usual colorful display of tropical fish complete the picture with a good chance of a visit from a sea turtle. With the help of local protection agencies and volunteers, sea turtles are making a comeback here in Cabo.

PELICAN ROCK SAND FALLS

Located in Cabo Bay alongside the rocky cliffs that lead the way to Land’s End, this area offers dives starting at 20 feet. Drop down the walls with sea fans and schools of goat fish, puffers, eels, parrotfish and angels. Other common sightings are lobsters, jacks, rays and the occasional white tip reef shark. DOLPHIN SWIM EXPERIENCE

A fun dolphin adventure with an exciting ride Everyone dreams of swimming with dolphins, and our Dolphin Swim Experience is your chance to chat, cuddle, play and swim with these charming and affable creatures. Designed for those who want the comfort of a shallow platform (through most of the program) as well as an exciting swim encounter. From the platform, you will get to know your dolphin up close and personal – learning all about these gentle and amazing animals. You also enjoy a thrilling ride with your dolphin. This is truly a unique and magical experience full of unique interaction and fun water activities.

DOLPHIN ENCOUNTER An unforgettable introduction to dolphins Our Dolphin Encounter is designed for non-swimmers and families; it is an ideal introduction to dolphins. This encounter takes place in the shallow water of our seawater pool - where you’ll get acquainted with these friendly and curious characters and learn about their anatomy, physiology and the history of the ocean’s most inspiring and intelligent mammals. Feel their smooth skin, feed them their favorite treat, kiss and play with them and communicate one-on-one using your newly learned hand signals – just like a trainer.

DOLPHIN KIDS An unforgettable experience especially designed for kids At Cabo Dolphins we believe people of all ages should have the chance to experience our friendly family of dolphins. So we designed this program specifically for young children, age four to

nine, to provide them with the chance to interact and get closer to dolphins than they ever dreamed possible. Set in shallow water for safety and comfort, you are sure to see ear-toear smiles and hear giggles of delight, as the kids experience their encounter.

TRAINER FOR A DAY An educational and unique dolphin adventure If you love dolphins, or have ever thought about being a dolphin trainer, the adventure of a lifetime awaits you at Cabo Dolphins. Developed for people who want to learn more about training marine mammals, our Trainer for a Day

program gives you the chance to spend an educational day working beside our dolphin trainers at our dolphin center in Cabo. You’ll learn animal care, training methods and experience fun in-water activities. A career as a dolphin trainer may be yours!

DOLPHIN SWIM

Our most exciting and interactive swimming adventure Our Dolphin Swim is the ultimate dolphin swim, providing the smallest group size and most interaction available anywhere. Interacting 40 minutes in the water with a dolphin, you’re ensured the best possible opportunity to develop a close, personal bond with your new

dolphin friend. During this deepwater, intimate swim, you’ll discover all there is to know about dolphins, from the best possible teachers the dolphins themselves - as they communicate and flirt with you in the comfort and safety of our specially designed pool.

Clash of the titans: Email vs social media by Fiona Graham Technology of business reporter, BBC News

The headlines were unequivocal Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had announced that email is dead. The truth however was a little more prosaic. At the launch of the social network’s new messaging platform, he had said “we don’t think a modern messaging system is going to be email”, and that the new system was “not email”. Mr Zuckerberg wasn’t the first to suggest that email is obsolete, and neither has he been the last. Email has come a long way from the first message sent by programmer Ray Tomlinson across a network back in 1971. Senior citizen The @ symbol separated the names of user and machine, and the message was sent from one machine to another over the precursor to the in-

ternet, the ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). Today email is ubiquitous. Technology market researchers Radicati see the number of email accounts worldwide growing from 3.1bn in 2011 to nearly 4.1bn by 2015. Email use is lower among teenagers - but whether this changes when they start work is unknown. So just how likely is it that the creaking inboxes that haunt many of us will soon be replaced? Writing history One man with more reason than most to have an opinion on the matter is email specialist Mimecast’s chief scientist Nathaniel Borenstein, co-creator of the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) protocol. This is the internet standard that lays down how messages are formatted. It lets your email contain different

characters, have attachments, and contain other types of files, among other things. “Email is still growing,” he says. “There’s no real sign that social is making a major dent in it. “For the most part I think they fill different functions, but that they connect with each other. I think they’re symbiotic. I’m reluctant to cast them into opposition.”They may have more in common than you think. “Nowadays people will tell you that email is something sent to a name at a domain. And that was not the case certainly 20 years ago,” says Mr Borenstein. “Twenty years ago there were lots of independent email systems with different addressing schemes that either didn’t interoperate at all or had complicated gateways.

This would mean that messaging systems like Facebook’s could equally be seen as email. Unlimited storage The overflowing inbox should also be a thing of the past, thanks to cloud computing. “There are business, legal and technical reasons [for restricting inboxes],” says Mr Borenstein. “The technical reasons no longer hold water. It’s increasingly the case that you just can’t begin to believe that there’s not enough storage.” Social media’s strength, according to Mr Borenstein, is allowing you to communicate with customised groups of people. “They’re both useful for business. I do believe that social media is going to be used more and more in business. I don’t think that Facebook has gotten that right, I don’t even think that Google+ has got that right and they do a better job. “Surprisingly perhaps the ones I know who have done the best job are IBM with LotusLive, which hasn’t got that much traction,” says Mr Borenstein (who until recently worked for IBM on Lotus software). Social future? Not everyone is as sunny as Mr Borenstein when it comes to the future of email, however. Lee Bryant is co-founder of Headshift, the world’s biggest social business consultancy. He believes email’s dominance over business communications is coming to an end. “When email was first developed it

was an excellent point-to-point communication tool when nothing else existed,” says Mr Bryant.

“You narrow down email primarily to what it was designed for, which is one-to-one communications.”

“I think we’ve reached the stage where email as means of communicating is overloaded. I think we will see what happens on email today transitioning towards various kinds of both internal and consumer facing social tools.”

Shiny pennies Head of Microsoft’s Envisoneers team and self-confessed “social media luvvie”, Dave Coplin, is not impressed.

These are “flow-based” tools such as wikis, micro-blogging and internal social networks, according to Mr Bryant.

Everything has its place and it’s really understanding which is the right tool for the job” dave coplin - microsoft “I think fundamentally one of the biggest problems is that social tools communicate slightly more in the open, they create ambient knowledge and ambient awareness for others who are not even in the conversation,” says Mr Bryant. “You receive a series of messages, you hold them in the inbox and have to move, delete or act on every one. Whereas with flow tools the flow moves past you whether or not you actually open the messages.” But does this mean that important messages will flow past never to be seen again? “Arguably,” says Mr Bryant. “But there’s quite a bit of anecdotal evidence that social networks are actually very effective at surfacing the right information or the right things that you need to deal with.” Nevertheless he says he doesn’t see email going away anytime soon.

“I think that email is dead when it comes to social media in the same way that snail mail was dead when it came to email.” “Time and again, it’s always the same thing. Enter the bright shiny new technology stage right, therefore old boring technology must exit stage left.” “When all we had was email we would use email for everything. “Now we’ve got this wonderful selection of different kinds of communication. What’s nice is that our email starts to be for those communications that do truly need the kind of functionality that email offers.” Mr Coplin says there are lessons to be learnt. “The functionality offered by email is in many ways not well represented by social media. “The asynchronous nature is really important, the ability to attach things, the ability to have a secure conversation, all of those things are crucial.” “We will have this universal communications platform that means if I’m talking to you via Facebook, Twitter, email or whatever their replacements are, it will all be presented as a common thread, so you couldn’t kind of care less what channel they’re on, what platform they’re using, communication will flow.” But however shiny the future may be, email is in rude health in the present, according to Mr Coplin. “Everything has its place and it’s really understanding which is the right tool for the job.”
