The Best Mother’s Day Gift Ever MAY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MONTHS. The flowers are in bloom, the weather gets warmer, pools open, school lets out and it’s abundant with special celebrations in my family.

One of my fondest May memories was awaiting the arrival of my first child with a due date set for Mother’s Day of 2005. How perfect—my first child was to be born on the day celebrating motherhood! Of course, we all know that babies are anything but predictable. Mother’s Day arrived, and there were no signs that my son was planning to make his entrance. My husband took me to a lovely Mother’s Day meal and gave me a beautiful gift from our unborn child with a touching note, but I quietly sobbed that I wouldn’t have my most precious Mother’s Day present that day. Two days later, our bundle of joy arrived, making me wait a full 363 days before I could celebrate my first official Mother’s Day. But, my son’s birthday (and eventually his younger brother's as well) always felt like Mother’s Day to me because that’s the day my real present arrived. As my oldest turns 13 this month and enters his teenage years, I’ll

Five Things Every Parent Needs to Know About Water Safety
Celebrate Water Safety Month with Goldfish Swim School by Jen Deis, General Manager, Goldfish Swim School – West Chester
May is National Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Month. When it comes to drowning, the statistics are pretty staggering. Every year in the United States, 3,572 people die from drowning. Nine hundred and forty-five of them are children. Children account for one out of four drowning deaths. Additionally, drowning is the leading cause of injury death for children ages one to four — and the second leading cause of injury death for children ages one to 14, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What’s more, statistics show that thousands of children are hospitalized each year for nonfatal drowning incidents. Accidents can happen quickly. A child can drown in as little as one inch of water and in as little time as 20 seconds. Every parent and caregiver needs to keep the following water safety tips in mind: • Any time kids are around water, designate a “water watcher” who will avoid cell phones, conversations, magazines and anything else that might distract the adult from watching children EVERY SINGLE SECOND. After all, most children who drown are supervised. • The American Red Cross says that the number one thing that parents can do to keep kids safer in and around water is to enroll them in swim lessons. Swimming is an essential life-saving skill with numerous physical, mental and intellectual benefits. • Get swim lessons for yourself or any other caregiver who cannot swim or is afraid of water. • Realize that floaties, noodles and plastic inner tubes do NOT protect against drowning. They are created as water toys, not lifesaving devices. Life jackets should be designated as U.S. Coast Guard-approved. • Know that even the most seasoned swimmers can still encounter trouble. Make sure swimmers don’t overestimate their skills and that they understand the importance of never swimming alone. In addition to these tips, there are several basic skills that the water safety experts at Goldfish Swim School work on with students every week. Parents can practice these skills with their kids anytime they are in the water together:
• Work on getting in and out of the pool safely. Fin, Fin, Belly, Flipper! Help your little ones learn how to get out of the pool by manipulating their bodies in this order: elbow, elbow, tummy, knee. Practice this often; you can even do this on your living room floor by having your baby climb onto a couch or chair! After you practice, always remember to celebrate. Eventually, your little one will be strong enough to manage the movement on his own! This is a skill that kids continue to use to safely exit the pool -- even when they are older! • Jump, Turn, Swim to the Wall! Once they have the movement down, let your child jump off the side of the pool to you, help them physically turn back to the wall and then assist them in getting out of the pool by using the Fin, Fin, Belly, Flipper method. Do this over and over again. As they get more confident, let them go under the water and come to the surface on their own. This teaches kids to automatically turn back to the wall behind them to climb out. If a child were to fall into a pool, this skill could help them find the quickest way to safety. • Sea Otter Float. Work with your child on turning over and getting their faces out of the water to take a breath when he/she fatigues.
WANT TO PRACTICE THESE SKILLS WITH YOUR KIDS?
Families are invited to join us for Safety Day on Saturday, May 19, 2018. For more information and to RSVP for this free community event, please call or visit our website.

Michelle Berling Public Affairs Officer Michelle Berling filled many roles in her 16 years with the West Chester Police. In June, she switches again, to Intelligence Officer. “It’s a new learning experience each time,” she explains. “It makes me a better police officer—more well-rounded.” Berling grew up here, influenced by her father, a volunteer firefighter lieutenant. She claims the fire and police departments as family. Her comfort with public service manifests in a friendly attitude. “I try to be approachable,” Berling says. “I think it has helped the police department, as well as the community, to bridge the communication gap.” CONTINUED >
Maggie Clem West Chester Police Officer Maggie Clem always wanted to be in law enforcement. Some said she was too small; they didn’t know her big spirit. “When I was a kid and I would tell people I wanted to be a police officer, they would pat me on the head and say, ‘Aw, that’s cute,’” she shares. Others’ doubts only urged her to succeed. Clem’s dream was realized when she joined her hometown department in 2017, as the youngest and one of two women on the 84-member force. “I went after it and here I am,” she says with a smile.

hope, love and empowerment to Spanish-speaking immigrants in our area. “This ministry is all about embracing this community as human beings and welcoming them,” she explains. “I’m trying to get cultures to meet and know there’s everything to embrace and nothing to fear.”
Diane Bray When she moved to Ohio last year, Diane Bray joined the Rotary Club of Mason-Deerfield, and began spearheading volunteer efforts, quickly receiving recognition for her activism. She began volunteering in her twenties by being a YMCA "Big Sister" to a young girl with whom she still communicates 40 years later. Bray’s extensive international travels prompted her to join Dining For Women, a global giving circle to alleviate poverty, for which she founded a local chapter.

HOW TO BE A GIRL BOSS
EMERY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION’S SHELLY O’NEILL SHARES HER TIPS FOR BALANCING WORK, FAMILY, LIFE AND EVERYTHING BETWEEN ARTICLE ABBEY BRADLEY PHOTOGRAPHY ALI WOLFE PHOTOGRAPHY WHAT IS A “GIRL BOSS”? Think of a strong, confident, poised woman who balances work and family life, juggles soccer practice with board meetings, and who leads others to do just the same. She’s not perfect, but she strives to be her best self and recognizes that life is a balancing act. In the age of constant busyness, a girl boss works hard every day to be a strong leader, good partner and, in this case, a devoted mother. Shelly O’Neill has spent 11 years at Emery Federal Credit Union, currently serving as Chief Operations Officer. She leads a team of nearly 40 people at the office and is a wife and mom of four

“takes a village to keep it all together.” She offers her tips for young
women to follow their passions and rise to the top. Whether you’re a guy or a girl, anyone can take notes from this West Chester girl boss.

What if you’re sick or unexpectedly out of the office? Give people on your team the trust, confidence and skills to do your job.”
HAVE PASS IO N. “Have passion for what you’re doing and be enthusiastic about it. Your employees will know if you’re not. Emery is all about building relationships, and I absolutely love doing that. I believe your passion comes through in the work you produce, and your team takes notice. Being able to build relationships and touching people’s lives is why I go to work every day, and I think my enthusiasm shows in my work.”
