BIXBY, BROKEN ARROW & JENKS

Fall is always an exciting time in Tulsa as the weather cools down and the outdoors beckons us with football games, cool breezes, pumpkin patches and Oktoberfest. Memories are made when you embrace the events going on around town. Looking back it was always a big deal to load up the van and take the kids to pick out their pumpkins. It was fun to see which pumpkin was chosen that was going to make the perfect jack-o-lantern; short and squatty, tall or perfectly round. Then the creativity began with choosing a pattern to carve and making the masterpieces of the season. This was all followed by the traditional baking of the pumpkin seeds and sewing of the costumes. Football also has lots of good memories. Between us, we had two boys playing and three girls on Pom, Dance Team and Cheer. Running from one event to the next made for a busy decade but I always looked forward to the high school football games where we had the same seats every year and got to visit with everyone we knew.

Oktoberfest in Tulsa is one of the largest events of the year and rated one of the top Oktoberfests in America. You get to celebrate an authentic Bavarian culture in the heart of Oklahoma, much like the Oktoberfest Munich in Bavaria, Germany. Since we celebrate Oktoberfest this month we thought we would also celebrate the multitude of craft breweries in the Tulsa area. Beer can also lead to some good times and lasting memories. My first experience with beer was working the German Alps Festival every summer during high school at Hunter Mountain in the Catskills. That experience led to my fondness of dark beer and a love for Clydesdale Horses. Enjoy this months stories, start off the month with a visit to the Tulsa State Fair, enjoy the football games, have fun at Oktoberfest, visit the Halloween Festival at the Castle, and have a safe and wonderful Halloween.

However, the heart rhythm specialists at Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI) knew better. They correctly diagnosed Jessica’s condition as SVT (supraventricular tachycardia), caused by an extra electrical pathway in the heart. So, when her daughter Bridie began to complain about the same feelings, Jessica knew exactly how to help. Thanks to the specialists at OHI, Jessica and Bridie’s hearts, and lives, are back in rhythm. yan McAdams and his father, Dan McAdams went into business together when they opened their Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory franchise at 101st Street and Sheridan Road in 2010. Though Dan McAdams passed away in 2014, Ryan McAdams still credits him with the inspiration to open up Tulsa Toy Depot the next year. “A toy store is definitely what he would have wanted to be next door,” he said. Together, the stores have been a great success for the southern part of the metro area. But things are about to get even busier for McAdams and his employees, as both stores gear up for the Holiday season.

Ryan McAdams dips apples at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory

TULSA TOY DEPOT AND ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHOCOLATE FACTORY ARE ALREADY PREPARING FOR A BUSY CHRISTMAS

McAdams said he prides himself on finding toys that are high quality, frequently educational and hard to find in your typical big box store. But finding them takes time and effort. That’s why McAdams traveled in June to the toy show for the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association, or ASTRA. The event didn’t just give him the opportunity to learn about the best new innovations arriving this Christmas season, he was able to get insights about their creation from the source. “I was sitting down and talking about how the products were developed by the people who created them,” he said. Armed with that knowledge, he plans to boost the Toy Depot’s selection of toys and books to 4,500, or 50 percent more than he had for Christmas 2015. Though the Christmas shopping season traditionally doesn’t begin until November, he plans to have his full holiday inventory on shelves for parents and children to browse by the first week of October. Though sales of everything starts to pick up in the first week of November and continue to build as Christmas nears, he points to building sets and traditional wooden toys as the ones that get the most holiday interest. And for each category, he’s got a prediction for the top-sellers. Among building sets, he feels Tegu will stand out. Tegu looks like regular wooden blocks, but each one has magnets hidden within that allow blocks to hold together. These colorful blocks come in basic shapes or specially-shaped pieces designed to make vehicles, robots or other shapes. The Christmas Star from Afar set may seem like a more traditional wooden block set, but the recreation of nativity scene characters is just the start of the fun for children.

An included book recreates the story of Jesus’ birth, and includes a game that can be played all through December. Each day, parents can hide the included Christmas Star to a new location, while children have to find them and move the Three Wise Men to its new location. On Christmas Eve, the star goes to the nativity scene so that children can discover baby Jesus on Christmas morning. Though the holiday season is big for toys, it also gives the chocolate side of McAdams’ business a boost as well. Sales of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory toffee and fudge soar during Christmas, but one product stands out -- peppermint bark. “You can only get it during Christmas,” he said. “And I think it’s the best thing we sell.” The gift of chocolate is a popular one for corporate customers, as companies can create their own gift sets with unique assortments of chocolate offerings. For those who want to get extra-extravagant, the company can create chocolate bars with corporate logos stamped on them. McAdams said that, together, his chocolate and toy stores bring something fun for the growing south part of the metro area to enjoy. “One of our main missions was to create a community meeting point,” he said. One of the biggest events held by the stores will be their annual block party, to be held October 16 from 4-7 p.m. Among the many games and features will be a variety of inflatable activities, including inflatable archery, an obstacle course and an inflatable boxing ring. There will also be face painting, temporary tattoos and prizes, including a $50 gift card to Toy Depot and a 10 pound bar of chocolate. The event will be free to the public. ith the arrival of October’s clean, crisp breezes, you know it’s time to dust of your Tyrolean hat and dance your way over to Tulsa’s Linde Oktoberfest. This event attracts more than 55,000 visitors in four days. In fact, the festival is ranked as a Top 10 Oktoberfest in the US by USAToday. Tulsa’s Linde Oktoberfest takes place at River West Festival Park with stunning views of downtown Tulsa across the Arkansas River. Festivalgoers come to dance, eat and have fun. And, “bier” is the drink of choice as is the tradition at Oktoberfest festivals all over the world. Stroll through all of the tents and taste close to 80 brands with more than 300 taps. Jerry Muratore is one of the original founders of Oktoberfest. During festival week, you can find Jerry making the scene in traditional German lederhosen (embroidered leather shorts and suspenders) that he’s worn since 1982 when he became the emcee of one of the beer and entertainment tents. “As an Italian-American growing up in the Northeast, I lived in an Italian and German neighborhood where both ethnicities were celebrated by the entire community. As I consider us all Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, I consider us all German for Oktoberfest,” says Muratore. Bands from Germany are a highlight of the weekend. And, in regular intervals, they play The Chicken Dance, an all-time 16

Oktoberfest favorite. The dance was first brought to Tulsa in 1981 when the Heilbronn Band from Germany demonstrated the dance in costume. The original dance was known as The Duck Dance, but there were no duck costumes readily available in Tulsa for the band to use. However, a local television station had a chicken costume which they donated to the festival, giving The Chicken Dance its name. The Chicken Dance is usually followed by festival patrons hoisting of a stein of traditional Oktoberfest “bier” which can be purchased in 1-liter and ½-liter steins ... a crowd-favorite keepsake. Oktoberfest also features rides, crafts, food and special events including the Bier Barrel Race where team of six race the clock by rolling empty bier barrels from one end of the game tent to the other. Fans line the race course and watch teams try to roll the wobbling barrels and keep them on course. Another fan favorite is the Running of the Wieners (dogs). The race consists of approximately 40 low-bodied hounds competing to win with the fastest speeds. Complete Oktoberfest information can be found at TulsaOktoberfest.org. Oktoberfest is produced by the River Parks Authority.

WHAT’S A GROWLER? A familiar sight at many breweries are the dark-brown glass jugs known as growlers. Though there’s conflicting reports of how growlers became a tradition, one oft-repeated possibility suggests the name came from the sound of carbonation escaping the lid. Today, growlers are primarily used by beer fans to take home a large portion of draft beer from breweries. Once the growlers are emptied, they can be brought back to the brewery for a refill. In addition to giving customers the taste of freshly-poured beer, they’re good ways for people to bring home unusual and limited-batch beers that are only sold from the tap at breweries.

eer no longer has to be just Budweiser or Coors. A craft beer renaissance has swept the nation, giving drinkers choices such as extra-bitter IPAs, fruit-infused wheat beers and strong imperial stouts, just to name a few. Some local brewers have found great success with their own creations, which can be found at bars, restaurants and liquor stores throughout the metro area. Yet for many years, a piece of the beer experience was missing. Brewers could invite the public to their breweries, but they could only give out tiny samples of their beer -- selling strong beers in glasses, bottles, cans or growlers was forbidden. SB 424 changed all that. Under the new law, brewers across Oklahoma can offer the full range of their creations and give the kind of brewery experience drinkers used to have to cross state lines to find. And local brewers are ready. Here’s a rundown of the three biggest craft breweries Tulsans can now experience in their own town. Dead Armadillo Craft Brewing 1004 E 4th St. Taproom hours: Friday 12-7 p.m. Dead Armadillo’s best known for its amber beer -- Tony Peck, owner of the brewery, said that flavor outsells every other flavor by a factor of four to one. But the brewery’s no one-trick pony. In fact, Dead Armadillo is using its taproom as a way to try out all kinds of new brews. “We’ve got three test batches that aren’t production beers, we’re just doing them as special releases,” he said. “It gives us a great test bed for trying some new things and doing crazy stuff.” Though what’s available could vary -- and may never be seen again after it’s gone -- a recent visit featured a coffee oatmeal stout, a mango-infused English bitter, and a raspberry twist to Dead Armadillo’s amber. Peck said the passage of SB 424 came as a surprise. In fact, he had already built out a taproom in a former auto mechanic garage and worked with the old laws to try to give

customers a taste of what he experienced in breweries in other states. “We didn’t realize it would be passed so quickly, we got a separate pilot license for a high-point beer bar,” he said. “We then sold our products to the distributor, then bought them back.” SB 424 now gives Dead Armadillo the freedom to sell beers that may never make it to store shelves. Marshall Brewing Company 618 S Wheeling Ave. Taproom hours: Thursday 2-7 p.m., Friday 12-7 p.m., and Saturday 12-4 p.m. As the oldest of the current crop of Tulsa breweries, Marshall beers are a familiar sight at liquor stores and restaurants throughout the region. Fans have long dropped into the brewery, even though they were limited to just small samples of their batches. But now that Marshall can sell full glasses and fill growlers with everything they create, the brewery has braced for even more fans, said owner Eric Marshall. “We put in an industrial dishwasher to make things easier when we get in more people,” he said. Visitors on especially busy days may be able to sample Marshall’s brews within the brewing area itself, which sports the giant metal cylinders used either to cook or ferment beer. Marshall said they’ll always offer their standard flavors, which include Atlas IPA, Sundown Wheat, McNellie’s Pub Ale and

Old Pavilion Pilsner. And they’ll feature plenty of seasonal brews that rotate through the year. But Marshall also plans to make the brewery a one-stop spot for all the special beers they only sell on tap in certain places, such as the Double Tough IPA that was only at Fassler Hall or the Driller Dunkel sold at ONEOK FIeld. Marshall said he’s happy to be able to sell directly to his fans, but he’s also intrigued by what SB 424 could do for local crafters as a whole. “You’ll see a lot more people get the ball rolling with their own breweries,” he said. “I know a few people who are already in the process.” American Solera 1803 S. 49th W. Ave. Taproom hours: Wednesday, 5-9 p.m., Friday 4-8 p.m., Saturday 1-5 p.m. August 26 wasn’t just the first day Oklahoma breweries could sell high point beer. It was also opening day for Tulsa’s newest brewery, American Solera. Though brand-new, opening day brought long lines of fans eager to try American Solera’s oak-aged beer. That’s because Chase Healey, brewmaster and co-owner along with his wife Erica Healey, was the creator of Prairie Artisan Ales. Prairie’s strong and offbeat flavors became a rapid hit across the country and earned Healey a cult following. Though he had a facility in west Tulsa, Prairie’s beers were brewed by Choc Beer Co. in Krebs. Healey sold Prairie to Choc this summer, but kept the west Tulsa facility for himself. Now American Solera’s brewing beers in a variety of traditional styles, such as lambic, golden sour and farmhouse ale.

Four Seasons

FULL SERVICE FOR

T

om’s Outdoor Living is not your average lawn service. There is a reason their customers are proud to say, “I’m with Tom.” Keeping our outdoor spaces looking beautiful can be extremely time consuming. Tom’s offers total outdoor home or business maintenance, throughout all four seasons. Whether your space includes a pond, irrigation, or lighting, they take the headache out of deciding when to fertilize, plant, prune, protect from insects, and much more. Take a look at what a year in the life of a Tom’s Outdoor Living customer looks like. AUTUMN

As autumn arrives and the leaves start falling, Tom’s Outdoor Living stays busy with leaf removal, late growing season maintenance, mowing, and more. Then, as the growing season winds down, the holiday season begins. Tom’s Outdoor Living has two degreed landscape designers on staff to help design your custom holiday lighting and decoration displays. The designs range from elegant to whimsical to cutting-edge, to suit their customers’ needs. In addition to their custom designs, some customers simply need help installing their alreadyowned holiday lights. This is where the design team at Tom’s can help out. WINTER

You may think of winter as a dormant season for outdoor management, but nothing could

be further from the truth. Tom’s Outdoor Living keeps very busy during the winter. It is the season of preparation. Much must be done during the winter to ensure proper plant growth during the spring. From rose bushes to Crape Myrtles, many of Tulsa’s favorite plants need to be tended during the winter at precise times to create gorgeous future blooms. In January, Tom’s will prune Crape Myrtles, fertilize trees, shrubs, and ground cover, and spray insecticide and fungicide to keep spring pests away. Crews will check irrigation systems, adjusting for the appropriate lower water needs of the season. Throughout the winter, Tom’s offers snow removal services by snow plow and shovel to its customers, and can provide ice control for sidewalks, driveways and porches. This service is vital to both business clients and residential clients, especially when ice is present. Once again, the irrigation system will be checked, and repairs will be made to any damage that has occurred during the harsh winter weather. Nozzles will be directed to assure proper sprinkler coverage for spring watering. During the winter months is the best time to start working on a landscape design for your property. Tom’s Outdoor Living has two degreed landscape designers on staff to help you with all your design needs. Planning now in the winter months ensure your project will be installed and ready to use by spring.

SPRING

Spring has sprung! Plants are awakening, and in need of continued fertilization and care. At the beginning of spring, landscape areas and hardscape areas will be given a thorough cleanup to prepare the property for growing season conditions. Tree wells will be cut out and dead plant material will be cut back. Beds will be analyzed, and annual color will be installed as desired. Mulch will be installed if it is deemed necessary. Tom’s offers seasonal installation of a variety of annuals in an array of colors, including begonias, impatiens, Joseph’s coat, purple heart, and more. Their in house design experts work with their customers to choose the best colors and plants to enhance the beauty of the outdoor space. Once the growing season has begun, so has weed season. Tom’s Outdoor Living combats weeds in multiple ways. Spring is the first season in which crews treat designated bed areas with a pre-emergent for weed control. Even with pre-emergents, weeding is an ongoing task for Tom’s crew. To keep their customer’s spaces looking their best, they weed shrubs, ground cover, beds and tree wells weekly throughout the growing season. Pruning of shrubs also begins in spring and continues through autumn, to develop the natural form of the plant and to keep clear of windows, air conditioners and other objects.

Summer in Oklahoma is hot, and plants need extra care during this season. Tom’s Outdoor Living provides careful monitoring of all types of plants during times of heat and drought, altering watering schedules and replacing plants as necessary to keep their clients’ spaces looking bright and healthy. Regular maintenance for the growing season continues in the summer, with mowing and weeding provided weekly, and fertilization, pruning, and other care provided on a careful schedule. Summer is also a good month to start the design and planning process for any outdoor living projects you are wanting to tackle next year. The in house degreed landscape designers at Tom’s Outdoor Living can provide you a master plan for your residence with pricing so you can start planning for your new outdoor living area. Throughout the seasons, Tom’s Outdoor Living keeps its customers’ spaces looking beautiful. Their crews work hard to keep homes and businesses in Tulsa looking their best. If you are not with Tom yet, any season is a great season to start saying, “I’m with Tom.”

Of course, outdoor living maintenance would not be complete without mowing. Mowing services are provided to clients weekly during the growing season and according to growth patterns the rest of the year (October - March). The Tom’s mowing crew is meticulous, creating perfectly manicured spaces each week for their clients. Prior to mowing, the area is scanned for any debris, which is removed before mowing. Clippings are removed after each mowing is completed. All hardscape or patio areas are expertly edged, swept and blown clean. In springtime in Oklahoma, sometimes the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain too furiously and leaves things looking pretty messy. Tom’s Outdoor Living clients rest easy after spring storms, knowing that Tom’s will take care of everything. Whether it’s cleaning up limbs and debris, removing entire trees, fixing fences or replacing flowers and foliage, Tom’s quickly restores their clients’ spaces to pristine condition.

OKLAHOMA ALLIANCE FOR ANIMALS TAKES A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SOLVING PET OVERPOPULATION AND WELFARE ISSUES

Robin Suarez and Jamee Suarez

W

hat do you think of when you hear the word “furball?” As a youth, I have memories of the hack….cough…choke….and then a “furball” left for us by our family kitty cat. As an adult, I hear the word “Fur Ball” and with excitement, anticipate one of Tulsa’s most unique and imaginative fund-raising events. With mind-boggling creativity, Oklahoma Alliance of Animals (OAA) founders Jamee Suarez and Robin Suarez, conceptualized Fur Ball. Jamee left a volunteer position at Tulsa SPCA and immediately felt a heart tug to address the problems of pet overpopulation and the large number of animals euthanized each year. OAA, a Tulsa non-profit collaborative organization, was established in 2004 with the primary mission to bring people and resources together to battle pet homelessness, abuse, and neglect. OAA is dedicated to reducing pet overpopulation, promoting pet ownership, and humane treatment of animals through community collaboration and education. The vision of OAA is to transform Oklahoma communities into positive places where all animals are treated humanely with no healthy, adoptable dog or cat euthanized because it does not have a forever home. 24

Tulsa Lifestyle | October 2016

OAA takes a holistic approach to solving pet overpopulation and welfare issues. In order to reduce the number of adoptable animals euthanized, there must be an increase in animals adopted from shelters and rescue groups. However, this means there must be a decrease in the number of animals entering our shelters. Education programs are key to preventing animal abuse, neglect and pet overpopulation. OAA is a collaborative organization, facilitating animal rescue organizations, veterinarians, municipal animal shelters, law enforcement, and community members to work together to achieve common goals. OAA accomplishes their goals with several initiatives and events. Adopt a Little Okie, helps match Oklahoma homeless pets in shelters with potential homes and keep pets healthy and happy during their stay at shelters. Woofstock and Rock & Rescue, are large scale adoption events, inviting rescue groups to show the pets they have available. It’s Hip to Snip is a month long campaign in February, that focuses on affordable access to spay and neuter procedures for the public. Unchain Oklahoma sends volunteers to respond to the needs of dogs that are chained and are in life threatening danger from the

elements. OAA actively supports legislative and public policy that reduces pet overpopulation and ensures the humane treatment of all animals, such as the recently passed Oklahoma Commercial Pet Breeders Act that targets puppy mills in Oklahoma. OAA began the first CLEET certified class training law enforcement to identify, respond to and investigate cases involving animal cruelty. OAA acts as a resource to the public offering a procedure to report cases of animal abuse and neglect, as well as provide resources to humane organizations that care for animals victimized by crime. These initiatives are highly effective, but require funding. This is where Fur Ball’s importance is most evident. Fur Ball’s objective is to raise funds to support OAA’s programs and initiatives. Each year, Fur Ball is a themed event to add a little flair and excitement. This year is no different and promises to be the “cats meow” of animal events in Oklahoma. The Great Catsby and the Barking 20’s is sure to be a hit. There will be games, raffles, silent and live auctions, great food and drink. The silent auction tables, appear to expand city blocks, and there is something for everyone’s interest, including luxury destination vacations, original artwork and signed memorabilia for the bidding. One item will be a signed guitar donated by Carrie Underwood. Fur Ball is November 5, 2016 at 6:00pm at the historical Greenwood Cultural Center at 322 N. Greenwood Ave, Tulsa, Oklahoma. It probably seemed like too much, too soon.

I researched schools before my son was born. Toured here when he was three months old. Knew from his first day of preschool that he would graduate from this school. I understood that his preschool years determined how well he’ll learn later, so the time is now for early childhood specialists, a carefully designed curriculum, and solid academic foundations.

Holland Hall gets it right from the start— as the one school in Tulsa o≠ering all he needs for all he’s becoming.

The possibilities of and. The assurance of all.

chool has begun and what a perfect time to spread the word and educate everyone about the Period of PURPLE Crying and to help prevent infant abuse. Each and every day, infants across North America are shaken and abused because the person caring for them becomes frustrated with their crying. Many times the abuse could have been prevented had the person caring for the infant only known that early infant crying may be normal. CLICK for Babies is a grassroots campaign that invites knitters, crocheters, and crafters across North America to make purple colored baby caps to be delivered to families in November with the Period of PURPLE Crying program. The name comes from the well known “clicking” sound that knitters and crafters make with their needles as they create their works of art. Also, much of the awareness is generated through 34

social media when people “click” the keys on their computers to gain and share information. The main goal is to increase awareness of the Period of PURPLE Crying and help prevent the shaking and abuse of infants. CLICK for Babies raises awareness in these ways: • It starts conversations in the community - CLICK gets people talking about the reason they’re stitching so many purple colored baby caps and giving them to families. • The purple caps serve as a visual reminder of the Period of PURPLE Crying. When parents see the purple cap, they remember what they learned in the hospital about normal early, increased crying. The caps also help to remind parents to look back at the educational materials they were given in the hospital. Increased crying is not always colic - more often it is just part of the normal developmental phase we refer to as the Period of

Find a newborn size baby cap pattern or use one that we have found. Please refrain from including “pom poms” that hang from strings or any type of strap to secure caps to baby’s heads. These pose a potential choking and/or strangling hazard to babies.

Step Two

Purchase any shade of soft baby friendly purple yarn from your local yarn shop or craft store. Other colors of yarn can also be used in your cap, but be sure that the cap is at least 50% purple in color. Starting now and until the end of October, Get Stitchin’ is offering 15% off any yarn that is at least 50% purple in color.

Step Three

Start knitting or crocheting as many caps as you would like. Infant heads come in a variety of sizes. As a general rule, caps should have a circumference between 14 in (13 in-15 in) and a height of 4 in-6 in.

Step Four

Bring or send your completed caps to Get Stitchin’ by October 31, 2016. For every 10 caps you bring in, you will receive a $5 gift card. Caps will be distributed to babies in November during the Period of PURPLE Crying program.
