kids to run after the ice cream truck when the telltale sound of its music turns onto your street to secure the perfect sweet treat to beat the heat. For the loud explosion of fireworks on the Fourth of July, the shriveled fingertips that signify too much time in the pool, and the soothing feeling of aloe vera on that patch of skin that always seems to turn red, no matter how much sunscreen you slather on. If you’re looking for ways to fill your long summer days, we at OKC Lifestyle have some suggestions! We’ve got activities to keep you and your kids occupied. Check out a new rooftop beer garden and other outdoor spaces to hit up when the kids head off to camp. If you’re looking to stick closer to home, we show you some great outdoor spaces in which to entertain. Maybe you’ll pick up a few ideas to spruce up your own outdoor living area. We also show you some easy treats, yard games and summer cocktails you can enjoy in your revamped space. Invite your friends and family and throw a backyard soiree!

Oklahoma Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Service The 50th Annual Oklahoma Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Service was held at the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial. This year, the service was also a re-dedication of the Memorial. The memorial was in need of repair and was completely rebuilt. Six officers' names were added to the wall who were killed in the line of duty in 2017. The memorial is located on the grounds of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety at the corner of Northeast 36th Street and North Martin Luther King Drive in OKC.

Passion for Wounded Vets Drives Sabolich Prosthetics CUSTOM-DESIGNED PROSTHETICS HELP VETERANS LIVE A NORMAL LIFE ARTICLE HEIDE BRANDES PHOTOGRAPHY CINDY RITCHIE When Scott Sabolich sees a wounded veteran, his heart clenches. When he sees a military veteran who suffered an amputation, he knows he can help them achieve mobility. Scott Sabolich Prosthetics and Research in Oklahoma City has helped amputees for more than 70 years. Scott took over in 1999 and opened a second office in Dallas. Both locations contract with the Veterans Administration to create custom-designed and fitted limbs for wounded servicemen and women. All prosthetics are created in Sabolich’s on-site lab. “When I see a wounded veteran, my heart goes out to them and I want to help them get back on their feet,” Scott says. “No one deserves it more than the men and women who fought for our country.” Folds of Honor Foundation Senior Vice President Ed Pulido not only works with Sabolich Prosthetics but is a recipient of one of the custom-designed Ottobock leg units as well. Ed is a retired U.S. Army major. “Scott understands the military culture and the business behind it,” he says. “He makes sure he provides the best limbs, but at a cost-savings to the taxpayers. They provide the best care, and they work directly with you. They are patient-centered. When you have a limb taken away, it’s not an easy thing.” At Sabolich Prosthetics, roughly 10 to 15 percent of patients are veterans. “Not a lot of veterans realize they can go anywhere for prosthetics as long as its a contract provider,” Scott says. “We hold patents on specialized technology they can’t get elsewhere, but we do it at the same cost. When veterans come to us, they get a specialized and better-fitting prosthetic.”

ON ANY GIVEN DAY AT TOWN VILLAGE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY, RESIDENTS CAN BE FOUND TAKING A BRISK STROLL WITH THE WALKING CLUB, ATTENDING WEEKLY OUTINGS TO LOCAL SHOPS OR EVENTS, CREATING ART WITH THE OKLAHOMA CITY ART COUNCIL OR LAUGHING WITH FRIENDS AT THE FRIDAY HAPPY HOURS. Designed more like a private neighborhood or district, Town Village isn’t what most people think of when they hear “retirement center.” With a half-dozen activities a day and private apartments, this center is for retirees ready for the easy life — and not a single person there considers themselves an “old person.” That’s how Valerie Morrison, manager and director, likes it. “We are a community,” Valerie says. “We are a retirement community that offers independent living, independent living with care and living with assistance. These choices allow our residents to age in place so they won’t be forced to move if things change for them.” By creating a friendly and hassle-free environment, residents live in one- or two-bedroom apartment homes, enjoy restaurant-style dining, transportation and health assistance and more activities than most high-end apartment communities offer. Whether it’s a trip to see The Senior Follies or hosted musical performances or daily exercise classes, Town Village caters to those aged 55-plus. “It’s like a seniors’ world encapsulated under one roof,” Valerie says. “We have a beauty shop where they can get pedicures, a health club, a lovely courtyard where they can sit and enjoy a glass of wine, movie night, church services and a postal hub. If they need care, we have home health available here as well.” Valerie says active living is the key to happy aging, but as health or circumstances change, the center can adapt without a resident havFor more information, visit

For more information, visit SchlegelBicycles.com and OKC.gov.

One way to enjoy summer in Oklahoma City is to hop on your bike and hit the more than 80 miles of multi-use trails in the city. The Oklahoma City trails system offers recreation and exercise fun with 10 inter-connected trails that can take cyclists to almost every point in the city. Schlegel Bicycles is the perfect place to learn about cycling and gear up. “If you want to start riding, having a properly fit bike is very important,” says owner Steve Schlegel. “There is also an opportunity to rent bicycles if you aren’t ready to make the commitment to buy one.” The 13-mile Oklahoma River Trail, named one of the 50 best trails by Complex, offers a flat, paved riding surface free of traffic crossings. Lake Hefner is also a favorite route for cyclists, and the new Spring Creek mountain biking trail at Lake Arcadia was dedicated this spring. “It’s the prettiest bike trail in Oklahoma, in my opinion,” Steve says.

Our adult pool bar is under construction which will provide ‘island’ style cocktails with weekly rotating entertainment.” With the addition of the new adult pool bar, new chaise lounges and the ability to relax in a poolside cabana, the Greens offers a casual summer environment. “We are the Club for everyone from families, empty nesters and young professionals who are looking for a private club experience without the exuberant costs,” Hammill said.

In the bowl of a food processor with a metal blade, process walnuts, garlic, and salt and pepper until very finely chopped. Add basil leaves and pour olive oil through the feed tube until desired consistency. Stop to scrape down the sides if necessary. Add the Parmesan cheese and process for 30 seconds. Store in refrigerator or freezer with a thin layer of olive oil to prevent browning.

CUSTOM DESIGNED POOL AND OUTDOOR PATIOS Matteson Custom Homes built a home in Oak Tree featuring a pool with a waterfall that comes off the patio roof and a 9-foot tiled spa with an infinity edge. This created a great space to spend hours relaxing in the spa and watching television with surround sound during the summer and enjoy dual jets and other fun features. The waterfall is lit at night with LED lights, giving a lovely glow alongside the view of a wooded, natural lot. “It’s designed for entertaining and luxury,” John says. “Custom and luxury living is a big mission of ours.” Another Oak Tree home features two outdoor patio spaces. The top-floor balcony has an open wood design right off the kitchen and dining areas of the home. It presents a fantastic view of the Oak Tree National Golf Course, and below the balcony is a covered stone patio with another dining area. An iron spiral staircase connects the two.

CUSTOM DESIGNED POOL HOUSE

For more information, visit MattesonCustomHomes.net.

This 9,000-square-foot home located along Oak Tree National Golf Club comes with a custom-designed pool house and golf aficionados workspace. The pool house features a bathroom, shower and sitting area, but also a space to park a golf cart and room for the homeowner to work on his golf clubs. With reclaimed wood from a barn in Illinois, the pool house maintains a classic yet natural feel, especially with an Isokern fireplace attached to the exterior. The pool house also has a full outdoor kitchen complete with a wine fridge, sink area and more. “You have everything you need to cook a five-star meal,” John says. “We like to take the vision of how the client lives and bring it to life. For instance, this homeowner loves tinkering with his golf clubs, so there’s a special place included for him.”
