ON AN EARLY MORNING WALK TODAY, I HEARD THE SOUNDS OF BIRDS SINGING A LOUD MORNING SONG. It’s the sound of nature springing to life after a long winter’s nap. Flowers are blooming, and people are venturing outside as the weather gets warmer and the days grow longer. This month at Midtown Lifestyle, we bring you our Eco issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Inspired by the infinite beauty of the earth—and our desire to preserve and protect it—we compiled an array of eco-conscious and eco-friendly people and places making a difference right here in Midtown. From eco-minded businesses to products with environmentally friendly features, this issue is a celebration of all things Mother Nature. Throughout this issue, you’ll find simple ways to be more eco-friendly, from walking or cycling instead of driving to buying eco-conscious clothing and accessories. Whether or not you have a green thumb, we hope the stories in these pages invoke

WOVEN + KNOTTED LIVING BOHO-CHIC WITH WOVEN TEXTURES AND MACRAMÉ Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space ... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”

AGAINST THE GRAIN TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH NATURAL MATERIALS Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.” 16

FOR
FRESH,
COOKED-TO-ORDER SOUTHERN COMFORT FOOD, HOME GROWN GA HAS A TABLE WAITING FOR YOU. Cozy and comfortable, it’s designed to make diners feel like they’re eating at grandma’s house. Since they didn’t know what to put on the walls, they invited local artists to display and sell their work. Now their walls are lined with amazing pieces. There’s also an area in the back of the restaurant called the Thrifty 5 & Dime. Here, patrons can view handmade art, vintage finds and clothing while waiting for a table. Kevin Clark, the chef, graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta but also credits his mother, Phyllis, for teaching him the true meaning and methods of home cooking. A stay-at-home mom, she cooked all the meals. Kevin and Lisa previously worked at Paul’s in Peachtree Hills and Rolling Bones BBQ. When they first opened Home Grown GA in 2010, they had a small menu with breakfast and lunch items. When customers started making personal requests, they honored them and expanded the menu.

Some of the favorite dishes are the Comfy Chicken Biscuit, an open-faced biscuit made from scratch with fried chicken and sausage gravy; the Grant Stack, consisting of fried green tomatoes, bacon and house-made pimento cheese on grilled Texas toast; and the Lynne Stack, which was created by a customer and features fried green tomatoes, salmon patties on a bed of sauteed spinach and roasted tomatoes covered in pimento cheese. The specials are also always a hit and include meatloaf on Wednesdays, chicken 'n' dumplings on Thursdays and pot roast on Fridays. The food is so delicious that they were the winners of the 2018 Experts’ Choice Awards. Fewer than 2 percent of restaurants worldwide receive this award. Home Grown GA used the freshest ingredients, like local trout, pork and shrimp from southern Savannah. They get many of their vegetables such as mushrooms, greens, radishes and okra from local farmers markets and continuously change their menu so they can have the best seasonal ingredients.

THE 90 IN 90 CAMPAIGN ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY THERY JEAN JUSTIN LANDIS, OWNER OF THE JUSTIN LANDIS GROUP IN ATLANTA, IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING HIS CLIENTS FIND THEIR DREAM HOMES. He is also truly devoted to helping end homelessness. “Everyone deserves a dream home. We help our clients find their dream homes, but most nights more than 7,000 people in Atlanta do not have a home,” he says. This is why he decided to take the Keller Williams 90 in 90 Campaign to the next level. The 90 in 90 goal is to sell 90 homes in 90 days and is a way for agents to grow their businesses. However, Justin decided to make it an even bigger challenge by uniting the real estate industry for a great cause.
s s
In 2018, his 90 in 90 goal was to raise $90,000 in 90 days. He asked everyone involved in a home sale, such as attorneys, lenders, home insurance and moving companies, to pitch in with whatever amount they felt comfortable giving. “A lot of people want to do good, but there was not a vehicle to do it together that multiplies, and that is the key—that it multiplies,” Justin says. Last year in March, April and May, more than $90,000 was raised. The goal was actually met on the last day at 4:09 p.m. Money came not only from the parties involved in the transactions, but also from the community. The Atlanta Mission, whom they partnered with and awarded the money, also asked its
e
donors to match the amount. Another $180,00 was raised, and all in all, a grand total of $270,000 was raised in 90 days. “That’s the power of people doing things together,” Justin says. The Atlanta Mission uses this money to get its clients off the streets and into programs that provide housing, counseling, vocational training, addiction recovery, daycare, education and other vital assistance. “The awesome thing is that when people complete a program like this, they've rebuilt all
s
aspects of their lives and rarely fall back into homelessness,” Justin says. For more information, visit AtlantaMission.org/services.

GIVING BACK
(CON TI N U ED)
This year, the challenge is on once again. In March, April and May, the goal will be to raise at least $90,000 in 90 days. Other agents and teams have elected to take part this year, and a handful of Keller William brokerage offices are doing it as well. Most promotion is done through word of mouth, and one of his big supporters is Rick Hale, managing broker and owner of Rick Hale and Associates. Rick owns six offices in Atlanta and truly believes in the program. Since the proceeds this year are going to various charities, one that Rick has chosen is Every Woman Works, which helps women and families literally work their way out of

DID YOU KNOW THAT IN 2016, WORLD PLASTIC PRODUCTION TOTALED AROUND 335 MILLION METRIC TONS, ACCORDING TO THE EARTH DAY NETWORK? Although you probably can’t singlehandedly change the environmental toll of the amount of plastic pollution that comes from that kind of number, we’ve rounded up a few simple ways you can curb your consumption and do your part toward a healthier environment.

The next time you ask for a plastic straw, grab plastic bags at the grocery store or buy a bottle of water on your way to the gym (we’re all guilty of something!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.
