to write our January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past memories you hold closely in your hearts and keep the new ones you create in the present for as long as you can. We’ll take your lead, and we can’t wait to see you next year! Happy Holidays, Your Medina County Lifestyle Team

RING IN THE NEW YEAR AT THE FABULOUS BLUE HERON BREWERY & EVENT CENTER
ARTICLE WARREN WATKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BLUE HERON BREWERY WHAT A YEAR 2018 HAS BEEN FOR BEN ERJAVEC, PART-OWNER AND EXECUTIVE CHEF OF BLUE HERON BREWERY & EVENT CENTER. Erjavec and partners, Bill Rini and Mike Piazza, have watched their hard work and years of planning take a giant leap forward in 2018. This only adds to the excitement of what 2019 has to offer for them. The Blue Heron Event Center has been open since 2017 and has become a popular venue for weddings and corporate events. Now with construction of the Blue Heron Brewery (their most recent vision) nearly finished, the grand opening for that part of the business is right around the corner. 12
Medina County Lifestyle | December 2018
After relocating to the Baltimore/D.C.area for 10 years, Ben Erjavec, a native of Cleveland’s east side, returned home to Northeast Ohio to pursue his dream of opening up his own business back home. When the chance to purchase the property and buildings that make up the business became available, Erjavec and his partners knew they had an opportunity to bring locals something that Medina County has been longing for. With the already amazing reputation that the Cleveland area has as one of the best cities in the country for food and craft breweries, The Blue Heron Brewery & Event Center is sure find its way to the top of many “Best Of” lists in 2019. Come see for yourself why so many in the area are already talking about the elegance and splendor that await you!

LOCALLY OWNED THE BEST TOY STORE EVER
STEVE AND JULIE BENNETT, OWNERS OF SMARTICKLES TOY STORE AND BENNETT'S ROUTE 18, HAVE BUILT THEIR FAMILY-OWNED-AND-OPERATED BUSINESS INTO A ONE-STOP DESTINATION THAT HAS A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE IN THE ENTIRE FAMILY, INCLUDING YOUR PETS. Bennett's Kennels originally started business on the property in 1976. From there the Bennett Family began selling amish-style gazebos, lighthouses, wooden bridges and other home furnishings. In 1995 Bennett's Route 18 began manufacturing and installing custom-made swing sets.

on the property, just in front of the pet grooming and kennel business. Smartickles isn't your ordinary chain or department toy store either. Once inside, you can find thousands of educational, creative, unique and award-winning toys, games and puzzles. "We opened the toy store in 2010 when my kids were little. I wanted good quality toys for them and for others too," said Julie. "We have toys and gifts for everyone, from infants to adults." When Julie gave me a tour of the store, she introduced me to a couple of the employees and was quick to point out that most of them have been on board for several years. She believes that family comes first and even the employees that aren't "officially" family are still treated and loved like family. The Bennett's even go on vacation with their employees every year in the Carolinas! Aside from their great variety of children's toys and strong family values, Smartickles stand outs from other stores by offering personal shopper services and free gift wrapping. "If you come in and you just don't know what to buy that little 5-year-old boy who has everything, we can ask a few questions about what the child likes to do and then we’ll show you all the things that we know would fit that category," Julie explained to me.
Be sure to visit the Smarticles Facebook page for monthly specials, promotions and sales. And as we are approaching Christmas, stop in and take advantage of their year-round gift wrapping and personal shopper services. Come see for yourself why Smartickles Toy Store is the "Best Toy Store Ever." 986 Medina Road (Route 18), Medina, OH 44256 330.239.4847

YOUR COMPLETE HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE ARTICLE EMILY SHEA
ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS HAS A SIXTH SENSE FOR INTERIOR DECORATING. She’s so talented, but she’s not even an interior decorator. (She’s actually a nurse.) I, on the other hand, like to wing it. My apartment follows no color scheme and is basically a conglomerate of items I’ve bought over the years simply because they look cool. And whether the person that you’re shopping for is like me or my best friend, one thing we have in common is that we want our homes to be warm and inviting to our friends and family. Much like other people, we want our space to welcome our guests with open arms, especially during the holidays. So here are five items that bring a sense of warmth and love to a space during such a time of gathering. Enjoy!

Foodie
We all know this type of person. You know, the one that loves all things food. Sometimes referred to as a gourmand, a gastronome or even an epicure, a foodie is someone who takes a particular interest in food and drinks. Whether it's in the kitchen or out in the community–although, it's typically both– foodies are curious souls that often take interest in food-oriented activities such as wine tastings, restaurant openings and closings, brewery tours and beer samplings, cooking classes, food fads, food science and culinary tourism. In the age of consumerism, we are constantly–and I mean constantly–bombarded with the latest and greatest deals that seem to change by the second. It’s overwhelming. Unfortunately, this can make buying the perfect present for someone that already seems to have it all very difficult. The best thing to do: Think simple and don’t give yourself too many options. It’s true that the more options you have, the harder it’s going to be to make a decision.
