Lifestyle Letter

Letter from the Creative Director

I

nspire comes from the Latin word that means to “enflame” or to “breathe life into.” Doing things that inspire us energizes us and makes us feel more alive. Inspiration doesn’t always have to stem from natural talents and abilities but instead is something that motivates us and is about connecting with what we are passionate about deep within.

Music is that for me. I have been musical ever since I can remember, and it has always come very natural to me. As a little girl, I constantly made up songs and loved to go to friends houses who could teach me how to play whatever instruments they had at their house, and I would often daydream about when I could have an instrument of my own. I still remember getting my first piano, and later, as a teenager, my first guitar and spending countless hours playing. I have always played by ear over reading music, but that may have been out of necessity, as growing up in a large family didn’t lend itself to endless music lessons. Thankfully, I could hear a song and play it pretty quickly by messing around on the keys or strings for a little bit. Music has always played a huge roll in my life and has inspired and invigorated me in a way that is unique from all other interests I have ever had. It makes me feel alive. We all have something that inspires us in a unique way. In the busy stages of our life where it’s hard to even find time to sit for 10 minutes, those things often get pushed to the side. I don’t sit down on the piano or pick up the guitar very often these days, but music is on almost constantly at my house, filling me up in a different way. I have always had a desire to learn to play the cello, and so maybe one day when my kids are older and time allows, I will accomplish that goal, but for now, I am helping my kid facilitate what inspires them. We are featuring art, music and dance in our August issue. It was so fun to discover so many unique ways people are expressing themselves around the city. Artists and musicians reveal so much of themselves through their work that it exposes a vulnerability that is refreshing and invigorating, and I appreciate the creativity and honestly behind unveiling a part of themselves through their craft.

Ash, cherry, elm, maple, pecan, walnut—Vogel locally sources much of the hardwoods. “When a tree falls naturally, it still contains approximately 50 percent of its original moisture," he says. "We trim off branches and haul the fallen log to a sawmill where it is sliced into thick slabs.”

“The sanding removes any imperfections and produces a laser-flat tabletop,” he says. Each time the wood is passed through, Vogel loads the machine with a finer grade of paper. Once machine sanding is completed, there is an abundance of hand sanding to be done. “Along the perimeter of the wood, I use a very small specialty sander,"

(CON TI N U ED)

Trotter currently works from his Kansas City studio creating figurative, landscape and cityscape images. Much of the work explores the connection of all three subject matters as he incorporates the figure into the environ–ment. This allows him to convey mood and intrigue to each piece. His admiration and study of artists, including Ro–berto Caravaggio and John Singer Sargent, have led him to dramatic use of lights and darks in his own work. Cultural icons are also subjects of influence and in–terest to Trotter. His portrait of Jimi Hendrix has hung in the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood. A series of his work hangs in the Rainbow Room, also in Hollywood. Guitar–ist Slash, of Guns N' Roses, owns a Trotter original. The artist also has created a series of notorious, historical Kansas City icons. He also offers commission work for individuals and businesses and has an extensive resume of paintings com–pleted for clients across the country.

18

Leawood Lifestyle | August 2017

In addition to his paintings, Trotter's il–lustrations have been published throughout the United States and internationally. His client list in–cludes, but is not limited to, The Wall Street Journal, Walt Disney, Bur–ritos and Blues LLC in Dublin, Anthem Me–dia/KC Magazine, the Kan– sas City Star and The Pitch. His work is shown and showcased in galleries in Los Angeles and Kansas City. His work is represented by Eva Reynolds Gallery and Leawood Fine Art. In the artist's desire to give back to the Kansas City community he has donated work to the Nativity House for assistance to homeless women and charity auctions benefiting schools, churches and businesses. Going forward, Trotter plans to continue creating new series of works that capture the soul and emotion of the time, place and people he paints.

JAMES “SugEasy” SINGLETON

THE ESSENCE OF MOVEMENT

26

Leawood Lifestyle | August 2017

ARTICLE ADRIANE TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

“God did not just create us for one thing; he created us for everything. My journey has taken me to dance.ˮ According to James “SugEasy” Singleton, everyone is born knowing how to dance. It is an argument that he has often successfully debated, but it is also this belief that is a driving force within a profession that seems to have chosen him. For SugEasy, the walk of life is enriched by the rhythms of quality music and the swift motions of the body. He lives and breathes dance, and it is because of this that he has carefully crafted a career that keeps him creating, moving and sharing his talents with the world. Thankfully, the hip-hop dance expertise of SugEasy can be found right here in Johnson County. SugEasy, a moniker he inherited based on his constant and ease of movement, remarks that his story is very much like a time travel that intertwines dance and music, and, growing up, both played a pivotal role in his home. The melodies of the Temptations, the Commodores and Parliament provided the perfect complement for what came natural, and by the age of 5, he had already developed his own unique style of dance.

“No one taught me," he says." I just understood the flow of music and let the music take control.ˮ Intrigued by hip-hop culture and break dancing, it became his nourishment, and he dedicated much of his time feeding this desire, dancing wherever and whenever the feeling hit. It was when he was in first grade that he determines there was a shift from hobby to lifelong passion where SugEasy, dressed all in crisp white, complete with a fresh jean jacket, entered his K-12 school talent show. Struck with stage fright, he was paralyzed with fear, and it was not until several juniors and seniors invited him onstage to dance did he realize that this was exactly what he wanted to do. He has been dancing every since. SugEasy started teaching at 15 after he had earned a name for his stellar moves. With every competition he entered, he received accolades, and he became a force in the hip-hop world. Others noticed his mastery in the styles of house, lofting, popping and breaking and CONTINUED >

desired to move as he seemed to do effortlessly. He soon learned that instructing others to dance did not mean teaching them to step as he does but to find their own story through movement. “I had to go through a lot of trial and error, and once I figured out the formula and how I wanted to do it, I ran with it," he says. "Then I was able to write my own curriculum.” And a comprehensive curriculum it is. SugEasy understands that to teach hip-hop dance, his students also need to comprehend the history and culture of each art form. Most unique about his classes is he is not teaching anything he does not know firsthand. It is an honest testament to who he is: an authentic hip-hop connoisseur. He is the real deal whose enthusiasm is felt by every student from ages 3 to 103. His wide spectrum of skills can be credited to the experiences he has had learning and performing on stage and in videos with the pioneers in the field. The one thing he wants people to know is that hip-hop is not a negative thing and can be a positive reinforcement. He highly recommends taking his classes, meeting him and embracing the true essence of hip-hop. He is an open book just waiting to help others write their own interpretation of movement.

“Music is the ink, you are the pen, the dance floor is your canvas. Just create," he says.

Classes are available at Deena Shroyer School of Dance, Creative Movement and Dance, Culture House, Crescendo, and 360 Gymnastics. To contact SugEasy and learn more, email TranslationInMovement@gmail.com. 28

any fans of music may believe that all guitar players are basically the same. Those who sit in the audience when local musician Lester Estelle Sr. plays know otherwise. With unorthodox tuning, unconventional technique and undeniable passion, it is evident to even the most casual listener that his style is one of a kind. His ability and talent transcends genre and cannot be truly appreciated without hearing and seeing it in person. The son of a pastor, Lester has been around music all his life. His father played piano, guitar and sang as

"One evening, I broke a string and my secret was out,"

he remembers. “But Dad allowed me to continue using his guitar, and I still have it to this day." Having taught himself to play watching a mirror image in the TV, he later realized he was playing backwards. Using a left-handed guitar, strung right handed is only part of what makes Lester stand out from other guitarists. “I enjoy playing acoustic and archtop guitars in DADGAD tuning instead of standard tuning," he says. "I love to tap and slap the guitar and play with a thumb pick like the old school players.” Music, to Lester, has provided him a way to both relax and challenge himself to grow his gift and technique. He believes that playing music helps him maintain a disciplined and balanced life. “It

Joe also credits his education at Cure’ of Ars Catholic School and Shawnee Mission South with his solid values. “Kansas Citians just believe in being good people,” Joe says. “It’s not about politics or ideology; it’s about decency. It’s a quiet dignity that doesn’t ask for celebration. In Kansas City, being a good person is its own reward.” Alexa adds that Joe’s Midwest roots are evidenced in what she loves most about him: “His compassion, kindness, loyalty (even to the Chiefs) and his politeness. Although people in LA do look at him funny when he says hi to everyone on the street, but he still does it.” Of late, Joe and Alexa have been more introspective about the challenge in their lives to keep it real. “Look, Hollywood is great,” Joe says, “but you have to stay grounded, or there’s a very real chance that you start chasing the rabbit. Your friends are millionaires. Your old roommate is on the cover of magazines now. And you start wanting that gold. But I constantly try to remember that it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” So when Joe and Alexa trek back to KC, where do they hang out? And they’re always working on the next project before the current one is finished. “I have a morbid analogy involving getting a puppy when your other dog is older, but you get the gist,” Joe says. “Our basic philosophy of writing is you have to be working.”

Parting Thoughts

Children International What is Children International? Children International is a global humanitarian organization whose vision is to connect lives, creating a poverty-free world for children, where their dreams are unleashed and their hope radiates into their communities. We invest in children, respect their unique beauty and potential, and compel others to join us.

What does Children International focus on? For the first two decades of a child’s life, we surround kids with a safe place, a caring team and a clear path out of poverty through programs focused on health, education, empowerment and employment. These programs, which are country-relevant and age-specific, give our kids the crucial life and job skills they need to break the cycle of poverty for good.
