Kids and Pets FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages on the beach may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicate an issue to both the men and women of our community each year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in Laguna Niguel, so we whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats on page 32so you can spoil your loyal companions. When’s the last time you had family portraits taken? On p age 16, we offer some tips for styling the most successful photo session—dog and kids included. Finally, while most families take their vacations in August, some kids take earlier vacations in June. We let a few of them share their experiences on page 20.

Family Portraits

FAMILY PORTRAIT. I recall, when I was a child, the day my family dressed up and took a professional photograph. I still cherish that photograph. Every time I look at it, the memories flood in. I vividly recall the day, the setting and the photographer’s bright lights. Even better, I remember my neighborhood, friends and elementary school classmates. With lots of demand for family portraits, it’s an exciting time for us photographers. And I’m pleased to have the opportunity to share some insights to make your family portrait the best it can be. The most essential element is the emotion it shares with the viewer. Portraits are an invitation into the subject’s feelings at a moment in time.

styling tips If you’re planning on getting a haircut, do it the week before. New haircuts often need a few days to grow into shape.

Don’t wear identical outfits. Instead, the colors on each subject should complement those of the group and the setting.

It can be fun to bring in a makeup professional. Just be sure to ask the makeup artist to use a foundation that doesn’t have sunscreen, which will change the color of your face in the sun.

Keep it simple. Stick to a couple of colors and avoid loud patterns and logos. Not everyone should wear patterns, as this will look too busy.

Finally, don’t forget your nails! Neutral colors are best for portraits.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM SUMMER TRAVEL

SUMMER VACATION IS A BLAST FOR KIDS! No school, warm weather and total freedom. But with a chance to travel, kids get so much more from their time away from the classroom. While most families take their vacations in August, here are a few kids from our community who had the chance to travel in June. What did they learn and what did they love? We’ll let them tell you!

Laguna Niguel Lifestyle | August 2019

Italy

I just returned from a family trip to Italy to celebrate my sister’s high school graduation. Our first day was a long 12-hour travel day from Los Angeles to Milan. It was an overnight flight, but I slept pretty well. We arrived in Milan, and we loved it—from the food to the shops to the overall feel of the city. The next morning, my dad and I went on a tour of the Monza Circuit, a very popular Formula One racetrack. After that, we traveled by train to Venice. We loved the views and the water, and we got to take a boat ride to the glass factory and a gondola ride. Then we went on to Florence. It's an amazing city with great food and fun things to do. We visited museums (even saw The David) and saw many things I had learned in my social studies class this year. After that, we went to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. It was so beautiful! Our last stop was to Rome, where we visited the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, the Forum and the Colosseum. We rented e-bikes and explored the entire city on our own. Overall, it was a great trip. I learned a lot and got to see some beautiful places. I hope to go back again soon!

Boat trip around the island of Capri—beautiful warm waters, lots of jumping into the water and beautiful scenery. Visiting the Lamborghini and Ducati Factories and Museums—they are the coolest cars ever, and we even got to see some new concept cars not available to the public! First dinner in Milan—we ate at a homemade pasta place—so delicious! Visiting the Monza Formula One Racetrack and riding a bike through the entire track! Renting e-bikes and exploring Rome on our own for seven hours! CONTINUED >

TRAVEL DESTINATION

(CON TI N U ED)

Idaho My name is Gabby, and I’m going to tell you about the best summer ever! I went to Idaho this summer, and it was spectacular. My family owns a lake house on Coeur d’Alene Lake, so we try to go to Idaho as much as possible. But this year was special! We did many different activities like jet skiing, wake surfing, tubing and so much more. My favorite thing we did was go to the water park! The water park has huge slides, a lazy river and a 50-gallon bucket of water that splashed everyone. I learned how to indoor surf! I admit it was hard at first, but once I did it, it was pretty easy and fun. Before our vacation was over, my family and I went on a seventeen-mile bike ride. The view was absolutely amazing. My vacation was a blast! I can’t wait for next summer!

The lake was so pretty, especially in the morning. The water park was a blast! I loved the slides! The bike ride was long, but it was really good exercise and fun to ride with my family. We had some great meals at really good restaurants. My summer so far is the best one I’ve ever had!

22

Laguna Niguel Lifestyle | August 2019

The Grand Canyon My trip to the Grand Canyon was amazing! At one point, I got pretty scared because when I looked over the edge, it was straight down. We went on the Skywalk at Eagle Point, and the view was awesome. The Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that sticks out in mid-air of over the Canyon. It’s about 4,000 feet above the ground. Crazy! Then, we went on a helicopter and flew all around. We also took a Pink Jeep tour. That was fun because we had a guide who knew all the best lookout spots and places where there were no other people. He also taught us a lot about the history of the Grand Canyon. Overall, the best part of the experience was the amazing views. We learned about the Grand Canyon in science class, but to see it in real life was something I will never forget!

The Grand Canyon is over 200 miles long and 6,000 feet deep! The Grand Canyon is full of hidden caves. I’d love to explore them. The Colorado River started carving out the canyon millions of years ago. The Grand Canyon Park is bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island. Native Americans have been living at the canyon for thousands of years.

Laguna Niguel Lifestyle | August 2019

“EVERY IMAGE HAS A STORY BEHIND IT. AND THAT STORY IS ENHANCED BY THE INTERACTION OF SHAPES, COLORS AND EFFECTS OF LIGHT ON ITS SUBJECT.” —TONI DANCHIK

LAGUNA NIGUEL RESIDENT AND FINE ARTIST, TONI DANCHIK, ALWAYS HAS HER EYES OPEN FOR SPECIAL MOMENTS WHEN THEY OCCUR. It could be a certain lighting on a child at play, the interaction between seagulls on the beach or simply a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Part of what attracts her is the “story” behind every image. Toni says she looks for good design, the interaction of shapes, colors and the effects of light on a subject.

ARTIST’S PALETTE

(CON TI N U ED)

Born and raised in South Africa, Toni has a unique insight into the plight of women and children living in rural villages with a lack of clean water and basic facilities. Contrasted against the bleakness of poverty, Toni finds their beautiful smiles and warm hearts are an inspiration for all of humankind. She uses her influence to bring awareness to the plight of young children orphaned as a result of the HIV/ AIDS pandemic in Africa. She and her husband, Paul, support Acres of Love (AcresOfLove.org), an organization that rescues these abandoned children and gives them a home and hope for the future. But that’s not all. For close to 10 years, Toni has created original artwork for the local nonprofit Wells of Life (WellsOfLife.org). Headquartered in Mission Viejo, Wells for Life brings clean water to rural Uganda by drilling wells and teaching the local community about sustainable hygiene and water supply. This work is all done as a gift to the organization and most recently, Toni supported their Run4Water fundraiser by creating an art piece that raised money to fund a $6,000 water well. Toni’s work has been displayed at many national and international juried competitions and shows, and she has won numerous awards.
