ith June being our men’s issue, coinciding with Father’s Day, I wanted to pay tribute to a phenomenal man in my life: my dad. My father is a man of few words, but when he speaks, people want to listen because he is full of wisdom and love. He listens to understand first and doesn’t always have to be understood. He is a natural peacemaker, and his humility is second to none. His incredibly humble and understanding nature is my favorite thing about him and constantly makes me so proud of the man he is. He seeks to understand difficult people and can find the good in absolutely anyone.

My dad is a natural giver and will step up to help whenever there is a need and always acts like it isn’t a big deal at all. The need for credit for accomplishments or generous gestures does not exist with him, and he often gives in secret. He is so laid-back and positive, and his low-key, patient personality has always made me feel so secure. I don’t think I have ever seen him stressed in my life, and that says a lot for someone who raised 10 kids. Growing up my dad was always so much fun, and was known to go to great lengths to make up extravagant games, scavenger hunts and treasure maps for us to explore. He took an interest in any activity we were involved in and coached all of us in multiple sports. He was always present, always supportive and always ready to listen, even in our frustrating stages. I am barely scratching the surface about the man he is, but his influence in my life and the lives of my entire family will have an impact for generations to come. His character has made a lasting impression on all of us and is something we all strive to emulate. Thanks to all the men in our community that make a positive impact, big or small, on those around you. While you may not realize it in the moment, your contributions make a big difference.

There's no shortage of barbecue in the greater Kansas City area, but there's a reason this barbecue restaurant stands out among the rest. "The restaurant portrays a small-town atmosphere in the big city with a focus on great service and incredible barbecue," Doug says. "We prep all of our barbecue with our own custom rub and slow smoke all of our meats. We serve all of our meats dry without sauce and provide our customers with many different options of barbecue sauce to choose from." Sauces include a wide variety of local KC favorites and their two custom sauces, Carolina mustard and house barbecue. Many sauce lovers that cover their meal at other barbecue restaurants find very little sauce is needed, if any at all, at Brobecks. By focusing on the quality of the smoked meat versus just the flavor of barbecue sauce, you're guaranteed the best in the Midwest. Brobecks is known for mouthwatering burnt ends, smoked ribs, and pulled pork, but don't leave without trying their famous ham salad dip. "We sell several hundred pounds a week of ham salad alone as an appetizer dip, as a sandwich or accompanying any of our other meat options," Doug says. Lunch and dinner specials, which include which include smoked salmon, burnt end stew, smoked pork chops and smoked jumbo shrimp, are also a must-try. Finish your meal on a sweet note with carrot cake, chocolate cake or brownies made from scratch by Golden Boy, a local dessert company. All options can be topped with vanilla ice cream. Cater your next event and amaze your guests with Brobecks. They make hosting hassle-free by delivering

and arranging everything in a buffet setup. Base packages include two or three sliced meats and side dishes as well as your choice of bread and buns, house sauces and pickles. Choose between beef brisket, pulled pork, turkey, ham, ham salad, Polish sausage, or smokey Joe, which is a barbecue version of a sloppy Joe. Their classic sides include baked beans, cheesy corn, coleslaw and potato salad. If you're looking for additional or specialty items, custom packages are available upon request.

Brobecks is located at 4615 Indian Creek Parkway and is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, visit BrobecksBBQ.com or call 913.901.9700. 12

here is a reason DeJuan Bonds is coined Picasso. Picasso is known for creating masterpieces, works of timeless art that

have influenced followers and whose creations have been mimicked many times over. This is much like the artistry Bonds creates in every haircut he precisely crafts, each a personal statement and a reflection of the collaborative effort between client and barber. Located at 11934 W. 119th St. in Overland Park, Purple Label is a shop unlike any other in Johnson County, providing high-quality services headed by a man who understands consistency, exceptional standards and relationships are what have assisted in building his thriving business.Â

Does an affair matter in divorce? Stange Law Firm, PC

With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all. Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant. Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states. It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced.

36

But with no fault divorce, that is no longer required. The exact language varies by state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced. However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute. But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time with either parent, an affair could still be looked at for custody and parenting

Eric Driskell REMEMBERING THE BELOVED BLUE VALLEY FOOTBALL AND TRACK COACH

42

Johnson County Lifestyle | June 2017

ARTICLE CHARLES REDFIELD

It all happened in almost an instant. Blue Valley head football and track coach, Eric Driskell, was attending a meeting of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association on Feb. 12, when he suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. He was rushed to a hospital and transferred to Research Medical Center where doctors said he had irreversible neurological damage. He died at the age of 43 on Feb. 15, and his organs were donated. The reaction of the Blue Valley, Johnson County and greater Kansas City communities is still being felt months later. Driskell graduated from Blue Valley in 1992 and played on the 1991 Tigers team that won the Class 5A state football title. He was an assistant coach starting in 1996 and became the head coach in 2010. His teams won two state titles and posted a record of 71-18, finishing second in 6A the past two seasons. There were 3,000 people at a Feb. 18 celebration of life for Driskell with more watching a livestream online. What made Driskell so important to so many people? “Eric was a transformational and intentional coach,” Blue Valley Athletic Director Matt Ortman says. “He made a lasting impact on students, athletes, teachers and myself.” Pastor Doug Karst of Covenant Chapel in Leawood says, “My son Alan is a junior at Blue Valley this year, and he has been processing this along with every other student. It’s not just the football team that has been affected. Eric, it seems had a positive impact on every person he knew. Alan only interacted with him once, but Eric remembered his name when he saw him in the hallway.” Karst’s older son Stephen was a senior in high school when the family moved to Kansas City in 2010.

“It was Eric’s first year as head coach,” Karst says. “He welcomed Stephen right away onto to the team that year, which made that transition year so much easier. They won state that year as well. That was a special memory.” Kansas

Kerkhoff has three children who went to Blue Valley High School—27-year-old Nate, 25-year-old Ben and 22-year old Anna. “They got in touch to express their grief and share memories, not because they were asked, but because they wanted to tell somebody, anybody how much Coach D meant to them,” Kerkhoff says. “Eric Driskell touched the lives of all three of our kids in different ways. He coached some, taught some and treated everyone with respect and dignity. He treated everyone in school the same way. He brought out the best in people.” The revered teacher, coach and role model had a great effect on his football and track athletes. “He was like a second father to me," senior running back and sprinter William Evans says. "He was always there through the good and the bad. He always said its more important to be a better person than athlete.” Junior Owen Olson is a linebacker and a jumper in track. “I really miss him,” he says. “He was a great coach and a father figure to all of us. He brought high energy to football, and I really looked up to him.” Driskell also impacted the life of Blake Brown, a junior wide receiver and long jumper.

“I think he is about the greatest man I’ll ever know,” Brown says. “He taught me so much through the years. Everyone says that he was big in their lives. He always said to be the best you can possibly be.” Junior track long sprinter Matt Morris says, “He told us to live in the moment. I think about that every day.” Driskell is survived by his wife Kari and two daughters, Rachel and Laurel. 44
