Applauding Creativity THERE ARE TWO TALENTS I’VE ALWAYS WISHED I HAD—TO DRAW AND TO SING. Those talents run in my family (in fact, both my kids have the genes!), but me? There are certain talents that I can only admire from afar. And admire I did with this issue. February is our arts issue, and we had the honor of interviewing several extremely talented artists.

I spoke with Lucia Micarelli, the famous violinist, who will be performing this month at Chandler Center for the Arts. She was only 5 or 6 when she knew that music and the violin were her calling. How amazing to be able to pursue that dream! Speaking of knowing what you want to do at a young age, we also profile Matthew Albert, who, at 14, is the youngest certified piano tuner in the country. Wow! And, both Karolina Adams and Matt Sterbenz show off their amazing artwork. We also showcase some of Chandler Lifestyle’s own talented photographers. We challenged them to pick just a few of their favorite snaps from their own shoots over the years—see their incredible images and learn a little about the people who help make the pages of this magazine so wonderful month after month.

YOU CAN DANCE IF YOU WANT TO READY TO TRY SOMETHING NEW? Why not consider the health benefits that come with dancing? Yes, dancing—like you did as a kid, but this time it may be more fun than you’re thinking. Mother and daughter Lisa and Lindsey Bianco own the Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Chandler and Gilbert. They understand that dancing, especially as an adult, can make a person feel vulnerable. “It’s a lot to put yourself out there and you may be worried that you’ll do the wrong moves,” Lindsey says. But, not only is dancing fun, the health benefits are worth it, too. “The main benefits of dance are improved cardiovascular endurance, increases in muscular tone, reductions in excess

Consider beginner classes and lessons that are geared towards new dancers. For example, Fred Astaire Dance Studio specializes in partner dances like ballroom, Latin, swing, and more—and is open to new students with little to no experience and body shapes of all types. It’s a great way to pick up a new hobby with the side benefit that you might also lose weight and become healthier.

“MY MOM MADE ME DO IT,” LUCIA MICARELLI SAYS, LAUGHING. Micarelli is referring to when her mother started her in violin lessons when she was around age 3. At the time, her hands were too small to play the piano, so violin it was. “I was so little, I don’t really remember starting at all, but if I try to remember my earliest memories of the violin at 5 or 6, I was already pretty serious. At 6, I was already like, ‘I’m going to be a violinist!’ So, it wasn’t my idea to start, but I knew pretty quickly,” she says. The family had moved to Hawaii from New York when Micarelli was 6, but when she was 11, they moved back so that Micarelli could attend Julliard School of Music’s Pre-College Division, taking lessons from greats such as Itzhak Perlman and Won-Bin Yim. “I really always did love it and did always feel like it was my thing,” she says. Micarelli was completely dedicated to classical music, both playing it and listening to it—until she began college at the Manhattan School of Music. “A friend—who was a classical cellist—made me a mix CD and it had Miles Davis, but it also had Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I’d never heard any of that stuff and I was just fascinated by the jazz. When I think back my reaction to the classic rock was pretty ‘teenage boy.’ I just wanted to play those big guitar solos. But I learned them on the violin.” Branching out, she began briefly playing with both jazz and rock bands around New York during that time. Eventually, those experiences helped shape her music of today, helping her understand styles beyond just classical, as well as how music is interconnected. “I look back now and realize that was an important step for me. Now I do all types of styles, and a big part of my voice is presenting lots of different genres and kinds of music, and presenting them all together as a well-balanced meal instead of doing a more traditional classical recital-type program,” she says. Her unique sound now draws fans from around the world, and her career has included touring with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra as a featured violinist and concertmaster, being a featured soloist in two of Josh Groban’s world tours, touring with Chris Botti and being featured in his Live From Boston PBS special, touring with Jethro Tull, and being featured in Barbra Streisand’s 2013 international tour. She also has two solo albums, a blend of classical pieces and pop songs. Oh—and she is also an actress, playing Annie, a musician, on HBO’s critically acclaimed series Treme, a show that won both a Peabody Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. “It was life-changing, in a way,” she says of her first acting role and four seasons on the show (2010-2013). “It was exciting to learn something about acting. During that time, I also grew a lot musically.” Her role also called for singing, something she says she may have never thought about trying if she hadn’t been required to. “Now, singing is a part of my show.” This month, Micarelli will return to once again perform at Chandler Center for the Arts. “I’m excited to collaborate with the audience and hopefully we’ll have a special night,” she says. “It always moves me a lot that people are still seeking those kinds of experiences [seeing live music], and I really respect it and don’t Lucia Micarelli will perform at Chandler Center for the Arts on Feb. 23. CHANDLER ARTISTS
THREE TALENTED ARTISTS GRACING THE VALLEY WITH COLOR, MUSIC AND EMOTION
“I LISTEN TO ALL TYPES OF MUSIC. I DON’T STICK TO ONE KIND OF GENRE BECAUSE IT HELPS ME WITH MY PLAYING.”
MATTHEW ALBERT When Mathew Albert was 12, he kept getting in trouble for trying to adjust the strings of their grand piano. He wasn’t happy with the sound. Finally, his mom had enough and sought out Jim Coleman, Sr., a renowned piano tuner, to give him lessons. “I told him you can’t touch it if you don’t know how to do it,” says Elina Sihombing, his mother. “When you want to do surgery, you need to know what’s inside. It’s the same for tuning a piano.” It takes most adults a year or two to achieve what Albert did in about seven months. He completed his certification that year. Today, Albert is 14 years old and the youngest certified piano tuner in the country. “I came through the Piano Technician Academy, but every day I would go to Jim Coleman’s house and take two to three hours of lessons there,” explains Albert. “My favorite thing about tuning a piano is bringing a bad-sounding piano and lifting up. I don’t have a least favorite thing. I just really love everything about it.” Albert attends K12 Blended Learning Center to keep his schedule flexible, and enjoys competitive swimming. The piano was the first instrument he learned to play, and it’s his favorite. But he’s also a drummer, xylophonist and singer. He already does private tunings part-time. When he grows up he wants to be a song writer, performer, and of course, a piano tuner. “I listen to all types of music. I don’t stick to one kind of genre because it helps me with my playing,” he says. “The most valuable lessons I’ve learned are to be patient, always have a good ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY BORG

CHANDLER AR TISTS (CONTINUED)
MATT STERBENZ
Matt Sterbenz is inspired by Southwestern scenery and the variety of landscapes in Arizona. During the summer months he can be found in the higher elevations, sitting at his easel with a paint brush in hand. When it’s cooler he gravitates to the desert. He enjoys painting colorful, impressionistic landscapes with oil paint. “Nothing gets me fired up to paint like seeing some great light shining on rocks, cliffs and mountains,” he says. “My favorite place to paint is the Grand Canyon. There are endless numbers of cliffs and vistas and I learn something new every time.” He grew up in Chandler, watching Bob Ross on television, and was moved by his work. This enthusiasm helped pave Sterbenz’s way to Arizona State University, where he met his wife and earned his bachelor’s degree in fine art. The couple have a house not too far from his childhood home. While he does have an art studio at the house, he prefers one without walls. “Most of my work is painted directly from life, and that involves actually bringing my easel and supplies outside. I hike and paint in all kinds of state and national parks,” he explains. “Each painting has its own personality. Because most of my work is painted directly from life, they are attached to a particular time and place.” Sterbenz (MSterbenz.com) always knew he wanted to do something in the art field, but he wasn’t exactly sure what. Before dedicating himself to it full-time, he worked in retail dreaming of the day he could make that leap. He finally did so in 2015. “While it has been a lot of hard work, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he says. 24

Converse built the existing Ramada and in 1928, opened the ranch to guests from the East willing to pay to participate in everyday ranch activities. With this enthusiastic pool of labor and additional cash, the ranch continued to expand both in tourism and cattle production. In 1945, Converse got drunk in a bar and accidentally shot a Mexican cowboy. Convicted of manslaughter, his enthusiasm for the ranch waned and he sold TVR to Brownie Cote in 1958, who continued to expand and develop the property as a resort and dude ranch. TVR continues to be run and maintained by the Cote family today. The ranch alone encompasses some 60,000 acres, making it the largest in North America. The I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A DUDE RANCH AND I

offer riding lessons for any skill level. If you really want the dude experience, cattle herding might be fun. Yoga classes, as well as basketball, pickleball and tennis courts, are also on-site. For those who want a more relaxing visit to just enjoy the beautiful surroundings, the rooms are quiet with private patios facing the desert. Both indoor and outdoor pools, Jacuzzis, fishing ponds, nature walks, workshop classes and a full-service spa offer more ways to spend time. Other favorite activities include a morning horseback ride to a remote breakfast camp, where a hot meal is served. Or, an afternoon ride with picnic lunch. An evening barbecue cookout with bonfires and steak, beans, and all the fixings is also held weekly. Three meals a day are included in the room rate and are served communally in the vast dining room. Live country music and dancing are part of the scene at The Dirty Dog Saloon in the evenings. You can even find a few TVs in some of the community rooms, but I must admit, I never looked at them even once. If you are planning a family reunion, company gathering or wedding, be sure to check out the latest addition to the property, the newly completed Barn. This event space makes TVR the ultimate destination wedding or meeting venue. The Barn can accommodate up to 350 guests, and its many features include a massive fireplace, rustic indoor-outdoor bar, and panoramic sliding doors. The beautiful desert and mountain views can’t be missed on the expansive exterior event lawn and outdoor stage area, which can accommodate another 350 guests. If you are considering a family vacation or romantic getaway, Tanque Verde Ranch is the ultimate dude ranch offering the Old West experience with upscale accommodations, great service and all the modern day conveniences—except TV, which I never missed even for a minute! 14301 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson; TanqueVerdeRanch.com

THE OSTRICH F E S T I V A L A LOCAL TRADITION 32 YEARS IN THE MAKING
CHANDLER’S FOUNDER, DR. ALEXANDER J. CHANDLER, WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO BRING OSTRICHES TO THE AREA, BEGINNING A COLORFUL LOCAL HISTORY OF OSTRICH FARMING. In honor of this historical fact, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce Ostrich Festival was first held in 1988, and has since become one of the premier festivals in the Southwest. This year, the tradition continues with the Ostrich Festival taking place at Tumbleweed Park from March 12-14. The Ostrich Festival is a family-friendly experience featuring live ostriches and ostrich-themed activities, national and regional entertainment, exhilarating

food,
and upscale arts and crafts, according to the Chandler Chamber. There are also performances by several local community groups throughout the weekend, followed by a nationally renowned headliner each night. “Each year the Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival strives to give the Valley a family-friendly event that entertains, excites and educates,” said Chamber President/CEO, Terri Kimble. “This year we have some really exciting news - we will be opening the festival at 11 am instead of 2 pm on Friday, the 13th. Especially since this is Spring Break for many Chandler schools, it gives festival goers more options to attend, more music, and more fun.” The Carnival Preview Night on Thurs., March 12 is free for Chandler residents from 5 to 11 p.m. It features carnival rides, food, a beer garden, and live entertainment. 34
