AROUND TOWN

PUCKETT'S BOAT HOUSE TO BECOME AMERICANA TAPHOUSE A. Marshall Hospitality says it's answering the call of a "beer-focused concept that's long been desired by our area's locals and visitors," according to CEO Andy Marshall. So Main Street's beloved Southern seafood eatery will take on a new identity as Americana Taphouse. The new menu will feature Southern takes on American classics, with burgers, sandwiches, tacos and creative entrées, each dish thoughtfully curated to pair with the 24 beers the new concept will carry on tap. A few Boat House favorites, like shrimp and grits hushpuppies, will carry over to the new menu with an Americanastyle update. Marshall said that pending a few design updates and cosmetic adjustments, the transition from Puckett’s Boat House to the new concept will be minimal. Americana Taphouse is expected to open towards the end of the year, and the Boat House will stay open through the transition.

STRONGER SCHOOLS, STRONGER COMMUNITIES

ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE

Franklin Lifestyle | January 2020

“STRONGER SCHOOLS MEAN STRONGER COMMUNITIES.” These words, spoken straight from the heart, are those of Dottie Bullard, Chief Integrated Care and Communications Officer at Mercy Community Healthcare in Franklin. Founded in 1999 as Mercy Children’s Clinic, this non-profit clinic originally operated from a small house on Ninth Avenue near downtown Franklin, donated by a group of Franklin business leaders. With the vision of providing quality healthcare to every child, Mercy impacted the lives of thousands of Middle Tennessee families right from the beginning. In 2005, Mercy added counseling and social services and in 2006 psychiatry, enabling the organization to provide even more comprehensive, integrated care for children. The clinic’s school-based counseling program began in 2008

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Today the program includes the placement of counselors in 31 schools, including part of the Franklin Special School District and all Marshall County Schools. “We are so grateful for UWWC’s support in forming Mercy’s school-based counseling services,” says Marcy. “We could not have done this without them. They have given us the ability to have a mini-Mercy office in the schools where we serve.” Mercy’s 20th anniversary and third annual fall dinner, “Bringing Mercy and Hope to our Schools,” was held last November, with proceeds going directly to their school-based counseling program. Says Dottie, “The inaugural dinner in 2017 was held to bring awareness to mental needs, suicide prevention efforts, and help remove the stigma about mental health. All funds raised at the dinners help keep patients in treatment. Mercy will not turn anyone away, and thanks to our generous supporters we never will.” Their exemplary work in the schools directly complements the bill Governor Bill Lee signed into law in July 2019 striving to reduce incidents of threat in school buildings across the state. The law is modeled after safety protocol implemented by Williamson County Schools, and called for school districts across the state to establish a threat assessment team. There is comfort in knowing Mercy Community Healthcare is going above and beyond in helping so many youth in Middle Tennessee. “Mercy staff open their hearts to every patient and family,” says Dottie. “We are committed to treating the whole person—body, mind and spirit. From wellness checks and shots to mental health services, Mercy makes long-term, lasting health improvement much more possible.” Some exciting news is on the horizon for Mercy the need for a bigger building as they have outgrown their current space in Franklin. Please visit www.MercyTN.org to make a donation to this very worthy cause. All donations are greatly appreciated. MERCY COMMUNITY HEALTH 1113 Murfreesboro Rd. Franklin, TN 37064 615-790-0567 www. VEGETABLES ARE TAKING CENTER STAGE ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA

30

Franklin Lifestyle | January 2020

HISTORICALLY, AMERICAN DINNER PLATES HAVE FEATURED MEAT AS ITS MAINSTAY WITH VEGETABLES AS TEPID, SECONDARY SUPPORTING PLAYERS. Now the balance of power on the plate is shifting as fresh vegetables take center stage. Recent “food trend” studies show that more people are making vegetables

Data suggests that people younger than 40 are eating 52 percent more fresh vegetables compared with young adults 10 years ago, and that preference is likely to continue as they age. In support of this trend, professional chefs, bloggers, restaurants and home cooks are embracing the flavors of a vast variety of vegetables, from common to exotic. A recent article in New York magazine noted, "Simply put, the once-meat-obsessed populace is realizing that vegetables actually taste good. Especially when fresh, in season, and carefully prepared." Many restaurants now offer vegetable-based entrees that have inspired home cooks to explore the healthy and delicious potential of making fresh vegetables a main course.

FRANKLIN'S FOOD TOUR

a taste of the south ARTICLE PAIGE SWOPE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Franklin Lifestyle | January 2020

THE CITY OF FRANKLIN WAS FOUNDED IN 1799 AND IS STEEPED IN HISTORY. Because of its deep southern roots and antiquated past, Franklin opens itself up to endless possibilities when it comes to tourism. And a large part of that history and tourism is food. Southern food as we know it today is influenced by West African, West European, and Native-American cultures. Popular dishes like fried chicken, collard greens, grits, and cornbread were adopted regionally and are now a staple in southern culture. Many tourists find opportunities to experience this unique cuisine. While it can now be found in almost any city, it is safe to say that southern food just doesn’t taste the same anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line. People come from all over to tour the city and experience its culture and sophistication. Margie Thessin, owner of Franklin on Foot Tours, appreciates the rich history of Franklin and began giving tours as a way for people to experience the city at its finest. Fairly recently, Thessin added food tours to the itinerary and has been educating visitors on the deliciousness that is southern cuisine. Franklin on Foot began in 2003 and offers many options such as civil war, ghost, and history tours. In 2012, the southern food tour began as a way to familiarize participants with authentic southern cuisine.

R i ta Wilson Q: YOU’RE SORT OF HAVING YOUR ‘SECOND ACT’ WITH A MUSIC CAREER. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO REINVENT YOURSELF FROM ACTRESS TO SINGER? “Reinvention” seems as if there’s been a conscious effort to change something -- that there’s an abandonment of something that isn’t working. Songwriting and singing feel less like reinvention and more like integration of what I’ve always loved and never knew how to make happen. I believe people have so much creativity and are sometimes stifled by messages they heard in childhood that keeps them from pursuing an artistic path. How many times did we hear as children that you can’t make money being an artist? I’ve met so many creative people who are doctors, lawyers, business people. They became successful but still have the desire to pursue the arts. Creativity, and the inspiration to create, surround us and live in us. I have met the most creative people in the most unlikely places. There’s a deep human need to express ourselves, and for me, it’s music. Q: WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR SONGWRITING? So many things! Stories that resonate with me that I have heard from friends, or have read about, often inspire me. My own experiences can sometimes be put into songs, if not always an exact translation, there’s hopefully, an artistic one. I wrote a song called

“New Girl” with Emily Shackleton from the Halfway To Home album, that was inspired by a friend who found out her husband was cheating on her. She handled it so gracefully and I imagined what a conversation with the other woman would sound like. That song poured out quickly.

BETTER THAN EVER

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE LIKE AT THE BLUEBIRD BACK IN OCTOBER? The Bluebird is an experience like no other. People come to really listen. They are connoisseurs of songwriting and they take it seriously. For a songwriter to perform there, you’re embraced with an understanding that the audience provides. The Bluebird has created that through their respect and value of songwriting. 54

OFTEN WE ARE SO FOCUSED ON OUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TO GET FIT WE FORGET ABOUT OTHER ASPECTS OF OUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE LIKE OUR SKIN. Most women have had some form of skin care regimen since adolescents. A lot of men, on the other hand, ditched any form of skin care when they tossed the last of their pimple cream. Enter Jack +Jill Aesthetics, from forming a skin care routine to laser hair removal, Botox, hair restoration and many other customizable treatments they can set anyone on the path to wellness. Jack + Jill have some tips to keep your skin looking its best this winter: CLEANSE, EXFOLIATE & TONE In other words, get a skin care routine down and do it. Find something that works for you. Consumers are often overwhelmed with the number of steps in a daily routine or underwhelmed with lack of results. At Jack + Jill, each and every piece of your routine is personalized for the results you want to see and the needs of your skin. SPF It’s not just for kids. Daily use of a moisturizer with a spf or even a separate sunscreen is the most critical piece of skin care for anyone. While rugged can be sexy on a man, unsafe sun practice is not. HYDRATE These early months of the year can really do a number on the skin especially if an outdoors man gets to the point where his skin is rough, raw and chapped. Jack +Jill can begin the healing with a Hydrafacial and then guide you to preventing the dehydration for the remainder of the winter. NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts.
