But it isn't here, not quite.

Bailey Batchelor, Kylie Fitts, Lindsey Haligas, Kelsey Huffer

As kids and teachers bravely head back to school for more teaching and learning, and the rest of us sit idly on our hands, trying to outlast the remaining days of summer before buying every pumpkin in sight, it felt important to reflect on learned life lessons. A loose theme of "what have we learned?" is threaded through each story in this issue. It might look like a music director taking a moment to put into words how they’ve grown; it might be Boulder homeowners discussing how their unusual homes have shaped their lives; it might be a restaurant opening in the space that used to hold a different restaurant. Because what better way to use the time than to think about all the ways in which each and every year, and season, has a new lesson to teach?

Beyond the stunning craftsmanship evident in each Dancing Grains work, a unique facet of each creation is the wood used to build it. The team currently sources lumber from urban areas, salvaging trees that are being cut down for maintenance or for prescribed inner-city growth. CONTINUED >

In other words, trees that are coming down anyway. The ecological impact of this choice extends beyond Dancing Grains. By “extracting [the trees] from the waste cycle, [Dancing Grains helps] reduce the demand on newly-logged trees that would otherwise be left standing, reduce carbon impacts associated with their carbon sequestration, transportation, and drying, and provide a new carbon-neutral option with a local story.” While Dancing Grains can’t yet obtain all the wood needed by solely using this method, Aaron is hoping they will exclusively mill and salvage urban trees in the future. As Aaron explains, the Dancing Grains team is “geared toward making pieces that really speak out in their environment, whether in a subtle way or an exciting one.” In order to make sure each semi-customizable piece is truly a fit for the customer, the Dancing Grains showroom features its very own “board room” where customers and admirers alike can browse through slabs of an array of species of wood to find the pieces that really stand out. As the team is salvaging much of their wood from urban areas, they do their best to keep track of the life cycles of their trees; they can often tell customers what town or even what intersection their wood comes from. There is a sparkle in Aaron’s eye as he talks of his team, his showroom and the future of his company. From his humble beginnings carving spoons to carving masterpieces for the new showroom, Dancing Grains is a Boulder gem, boasting truly unique pieces of unparalleled quality.

You can discover Dancing Grains Woodworks for yourself at their new showroom, located at 1001 Lee Hill Drive #3A in Boulder.

A FESTIVAL FIRST

(CON TI N U ED)

FROM LATE JUNE TO EARLY AUGUST, THE CHAUTAUQUA AUDITORIUM WAS BUZZING WITH THE VIBRATION OF STRINGS. The Colorado Music Festival, which the Chautauqua Auditorium has hosted since the 1970s, brought ninety-six renowned classical musicians from across the globe to Boulder from June 27th to August 3rd. But this year, the focus was on the person at the lead — first-time music director and principal spokesperson for CMF, Peter Oundjian. BOULDER LIFESTYLE: TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. PETER OUNDJIAN: I am the youngest of five children in a family full of musicians and athletes. I am a violinist. I had the good fortune to play all over the world as a soloist and as part of the Tokyo String Quartet. In my late 30s, I was forced to abandon the violin due to overuse and repetitive strain issues with my hand. At that point, I adopted my other passion: conducting. Since 1995, I have held music director positions with the Royal National Scottish Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, and now the Colorado Music Festival. HOW WAS YOUR FIRST YEAR AS MUSIC DIRECTOR? My first year was fabulous. The orchestra was magnificent, we brought soloists from all over the world to Boulder. It was as great as I could have possibly imagined. WHAT WERE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACED AS MUSIC DIRECTOR? One of the great challenges for me is to help bring the Colorado Music Festival the recognition it deserves on the national stage. We have an extraordinary orchestra, a phenomenally supportive audience, and one of the best performance spaces anywhere in Chautauqua Auditorium. The natural acoustic of the wooden auditorium is unique and spectacular.

A FESTIVAL FIRST

72

(CON TI N U ED)

Boulder Lifestyle | September 2019

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THERE WERE SOME SURPRISES ALONG THE WAY. One of the greatest surprises to me was the responsiveness of the audience. Just last night, we were performing Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony and we received a standing ovation at intermission. This community and the Colorado Music Festival audience has a tremendous desire to show their appreciation for what we do. I love that. WHAT WERE YOUR BIG TAKEAWAYS FROM YOUR FIRST YEAR? Generally speaking, every second I spend with music I learn something new. That was absolutely my experience during this festival, as in all of my years as a professional musician, music director and conductor. Specifically, I learned that this orchestra is one of the most versatile orchestras I've ever had the pleasure of working with. These amazing musicians from all over North America are enormously flexible and willing to go virtually anywhere, musically speaking. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT COLORADO MUSIC FESTIVAL? That is hard to say because there isn't a thing about the festival that I don't cherish. But if I have to choose, it would have to be the people. I love seeing people of all ages having their lives affected by this music and the environment. That's why I do what I do. Without the audience, there is only so much we as musicians can enjoy. I love leaving the audience with the beautiful and transcendent, the complex and gritty, and everything in between. SO, WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I'm looking forward to putting the finishing touches on the 2020 festival plans which include new concepts and ideas. Apart from my usual touring, I'm looking forward to visiting Armenia, which is where my father was from. This will be the first visit for me in 22 years. I'm also looking forward to experiencing Boulder in the wintertime and enjoying some skiing.

The Jessors commissioned the house from Papachristou in 1959. It was a radical design. There are circles upon circles; circular tubes, circular stairs, even the bathroom and bedrooms are circular. That experience of living in the Round House continues to reverberate, even today, according to Dick Jessor. It is often the case that youthful creative brilliance is constrained by our more earthly circumstances such as budgets and experience. The Jessors understood this. They gave Papachristou a carte blanche opportunity to design the house he wanted for them; creative liberty was their gift to their friend. “I had seen blueprints before, but never something like this. When Papachristou presented them to us we were just struck. We were stunned,” says Jessor. Carol Taylor is the current owner of the Jessor House. She explains that Papachristou homes were influenced by the vernacular architecture of his native Greece as well as modernists including Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. The natural materials used were chosen for their low cost and sustainability, a concept echoed by other young architects and peers, such as Charles Haertling. Several decades later, Jessor and current wife, Jane Menken, enlisted Harvey Hine of HMH Architecture + Interiors to build their home. The original Jessor house had left a dramatic and lasting impression on the two; they couldn’t help but make the second home an ode to the legacy of Papachristou.

Hine was entirely responsive to the idea. He saw the creative vision and helped realize the lasting impact of their relationship with Papachristou within their home. The new Jessor/Menken House by HMH Architecture + Interiors is dynamic and stimulating. The house is a place where the outdoors and the indoors connect. There is light and openness and practically no doors inside the house. “It was an act of remarkable talent to create this design” credited Jessor. The legacy that Papachristou left is invaluable. His influence and teachings demonstrate that design has a pervasive effect on our daily navigation; a vital asset to Boulder’s past and present. The Month of Modern Home Tour is an incredible opportunity to experience the lasting impact of the work and an amazing celebration of the creative vitality of Boulder.

LOCAL FINANCIAL PLANNING EXPERT SERBAN MARACINE’S TAKE ON INVESTING FOR YOUR IDEAL FUTURE

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE

“WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?” This is Serban Maracine’s first prompt for his clients when discussing how to establish their financial fitness and future. A Financial Advisor and Limited Partner at Edward Jones in Boulder, Maracine specializes in helping his clients and their families plan for their retirement and all that comes with it; from consistent income to preparing for the unexpected and everything in between. Here are his tips on how to establish a financial plan for now and into your later years that is resilient and adaptable to all the arcs, ebbs and flows of life. 01 | ASK A FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL FOR HELP. Diagnosing proper financial disciplines early on is hugely important to avoiding pitfalls and protecting your quality of life today and in the future. A professional can truly partner with you to create an established process for developing the strategies to achieve your financial goals. 02 | HAVE AN ESTABLISHED, DOCUMENTED PLAN. Relying on idealistic goals isn’t solid enough, and you need a plan that’s stresstested and can be adjusted according to your major life events. Be inspired to dream big—then support those goals for you and your loved ones with your strategic plan. 03 | PURSUE A QUALITY-BASED APPROACH TO LONG-TERM INVESTING. The time-tested principles of long-term investing are staples for a reason. Don’t give in to fad investments or the temptation to time the market. Instead, focus on patience and the fundamentals of serious long-term investing.

“I thrive on helping clients and their families accomplish their financial goals, which leads to a real sense of reward for everyone,” says Maracine. “Financial fitness is about taking care of what’s most important today, tomorrow and for the rest of our lives not just for ourselves, but for those we love and care about too.”

PARTING THOUGHTS

Who Are You?

WITH MICHAEL MEMSIC, OWNER OF SANITAS BREWING

ARTICLE CHANTEL ELLERINGTON

WHAT BRINGS YOU THE MOST JOY IN YOUR CRAFT? It started with a love affair with a liquid and has transformed into a passion for community and culture. From our small brewery team to super fans to folks grabbing six-packs occasionally, tapping into the drive and passions of those coming into contact with Sanitas Brewing shapes how we view our work. TELL US ABOUT YOUR SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES. Much of the brewing process has naturally evolved, emphasizing sustainability; we’re always pushing to improve. I’m passionate about smart uses of resources like water and grain—not always easy in our industry. We’ve loved being part of a positive cycle of grain use: giving used grain to local farmers. Providing a great product for cattle makes brewers, farmers, and cows all happy! AND THE KILLER BRANDING? Currently, Chelsea Zaloumis leads this charge internally. She’s constantly chatting with people on the patio, on trails, and around Boulder/ Denver. She’s been a big part of the label changes, our social growth, and those killer Instagram photos. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SANITAS TO PARTNER TOGETHER WITH MONTH OF MODERN THIS YEAR…. I think this is a super cool opportunity! I think MOM does a fun and unique job of celebrating amazing art, architecture and our fun/unique/ weird town that we call Boulder! GREATEST LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED IN THE BEER INDUSTRY. Our team is so important and valuable to our success; without them we have nothing. Beyond our staff, we need customers to enjoy and celebrate our beer. Daily, we are dependent on people. Understanding their motivations and how to help them pursue their own passions is a constant learning opportunity. Cash flow is a monster challenge. I might go to my grave still making cash flow mistakes. We’re very fortunate to have team leader Zach Jardinico keeping me in check and our books clean. Finally, work/life balance. I have failed to find this many a time and are constantly shown just how valuable it is. Although I do not live a life with great balance, I highly recommend others prioritize it.
