AROUND TOWN

NATIONAL AND UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS MONTH December is the National and Universal Month for Human Rights to encourage people across the United States, and around the globe, to stand up for equality, justice, and the dignity of all humans. The month honors the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as proclaimed by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. The international

y r r e M ! s a m t s i r Ch

document states the basic rights and fundamental freedoms to which all human beings are entitled. These rights include freedom from discrimination, the right to equality, and the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. According to the Dignity & Respect Campaign, the best way to celebrate Universal Human Rights Month is by working to find common ground with those around us who may not have the same background as we do. Their advice is to remember that we were all born into the same world, we are all humans, and our different races, religions, beliefs, and cultures shouldn’t divide us. We can observe the Universal Month for Human Rights by treating everyone with respect, kindness, and equality. DignityandRespect.org

Founder Christian Rea has always been a dreamer, but as an entrepreneur and father to two young children, there was a moment his thinking crystalized into action. “At a certain point in your career, you ask yourself the legacy question,” he says. What would be his lasting contribution to the world to make it a better place? He hopes his company Good Prints, with its beginnings in 2018, can contribute to a mission of creating legacies by using photography twofold: to help others to tell their stories with printed photos and to help nonprofits build a better world. As a self-proclaimed “Partner for Good,” the company gives ten percent of all profits to a curated list of regional and national nonprofits in the area of children’s health and healing, environmental causes and therapy, such as Capes & Crowns Foundation, see story on page 34. Christian is no stranger to the power of photography. Born and raised in Oregon, he moved

has improved. Good Prints hopes to be a partner in storytelling that lasts by taking images out of a phone and bringing them to life by using the collective expertise of the Good Prints team to provide professional-level printing at consumer prices. To entice and expand the ways photos can make the leap from digital file to a customer’s hand, Good Prints provides unique products — from acrylic, metal and wood prints, to pillows, blankets, duvet covers and mugs— that elevate an image into art. To make the Good Prints story a reality, Rea enlisted fellow creatives Tor Naerheim and Jordan Sofro. They envisioned building a cause-based company that would promote hope and joy. As a B Lab, a designation for companies en route to becoming a certified B-Corporation (Benefit-Corporation), Good Prints is part of a rising tide of commerce that sees business can be used as a force for good. As their company increases their success, they are able to increase their own impact by giving more back to the community. “Helping people tell their stories is the best job I could ever imagine,” says Christian. “If Good Prints can help promote amazing agendas of beauty and hope, we will all be better for it,” he says, “We print joy and celebrate the people that create it.” GoodPrints.com

3 POSTPARTUM TIPS EVERY MOM MUST KNOW Pregnancy is a special time in a woman’s life that is full of change. While many of the changes that occur during pregnancy go away after delivery, some don’t. Many women face challenges that can end up as permanent problems if not addressed early.

Guidance When Resuming Exercise is Critical

The first six weeks postpartum is a critical time for healing, where most women should rest and recover. At six weeks, however, most new moms are given the green light to resume exercise. What this means specifically can vary by the individual and what exercise means to them. Is gentle yoga or CrossFit appropriate? Without guidance, new moms risk injury. Understanding limitations is highly important and unfortunately, often not discussed. Emily Bliss, PT, DPT knows first hand the struggles many women face following pregnancy. She is just a few months postpartum herself. An avid runner, Emily has been helping moms safely return to the exercise they love for years. Emily achieves this by helping educate women on how their bodies are healing, the injuries that often come from pregnancy and how to recover from them. “Moms must safely learn to move postpartum,” said Emily. “It is not what you do, it is how you do it that can help identify underlying issues that can result in injury.” Your body will adapt to the stress you put on it, as long as that stress doesn’t exceed your body’s capacity to adapt. When returning to exercise postpartum, slowly increase the impact on your body to see what it can handle safely. Every one of us has normal movement patterns. These patterns are innate and ingrained within us. Postpartum, these patterns may get out of alignment. It takes a while for your hormones to regulate, especially if you’re breastfeeding, and lack of sleep will also impact the healing process. Breath management, postural training, and gentle strengthening can help restore normal movement patterns.

Diastasis Recti Doesn’t Have to be Permanent

A common and sometimes permanent side effect of pregnancy is diastasis recti, which occurs when the abdominal muscles separate to make room for the growing baby. This creates a gap in the abdominals that can often be felt and seen. While some diastasis heals well without treatment, others contribute to core instability. Emily recommends intentional strengthening, breath training, and postural training in managing diastasis, as well as being patient with your postpartum body, especially during the first year!

Natural Incontinence Treatments are Available

Urinary incontinence after pregnancy is a genuine issue for millions of women. Physical therapy has been shown to be 80 percent effective at treating stress incontinence, the most frequently diagnosed type of urinary incontinence following pregnancy. It’s the best first line of defense before medication or surgery. Depending on the needs of the woman, however, treatment can vary. Incontinence is often and incorrectly seen as normal after pregnancy, and can also be embarrassing for women to talk about. The number of women who struggle with it, especially with exercise, is drastically underreported. Safely returning to exercise means starting slow. Returning too soon or not addressing an underlying issue will increase the likelihood of an injury. If you are pregnant, begin a strengthening program now to help combat some of the issues many women face postpartum. If you are postpartum, begin a strengthening program that progresses over time. Even better, solicit guidance from a physical therapist before and after you deliver your baby.

TIMES PAST LOCAL AUTHOR REFLECTS ON SNOWY DAYS OF BEND'S PAST

WINTER FROM DAYS GONE BY WHILE THE STORMS OF RECENT WINTERS SEEM OUT OF THE ORDINARY, IT REALLY DID USED TO SNOW A LOT MORE IN BEND DURING THE PAST. In January of 1950, there were 56.5 inches of snow in just one month, and for many years the annual snowfall was between 70 and 90 inches. Since 2000, the average snowfall for Bend has been about 36 inches per year. Winters are not as cold as they used to be either; there was a time when the ice on the ponds around Bend would stay frozen for many weeks allowing for recreation and traditions for locals. Troy Field, sandwiched between Bond Street and the old Troy Laundry, just south of what is now McMenamins Old St. Francis School, was more than the dog park it is today. Every winter for many years it was turned into an ice-skating rink. Once the weatherman predicted a long cold spell, the fire department flooded the field and began building up layers of ice. It took several nights to put down a good base before skaters were allowed on it. If it snowed, the city would furnish a tractor with a sweeper to clean off the surface. Overhead lights illuminated Troy Field at night, and someone usually built a fire on the side opposite Bond Street. Skaters came right up to the fire to warm their hands and faces before skating back into the crowd of people who were perhaps gliding in time to the music playing through the speakers at the field, whether The Mills Brothers 1952 hit Glow Worm as they sang, “Shine little glow worm, glimmer, glimmer,” or 1954’s hit from The Chordettes, Mr. Sandman and its familiar refrain, “Mr.

WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.

PHOTOGRAPHY NICKI SEBASTIAN FOR JENNI KAYNE

26

Bend Lifestyle | December 2019

KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring. CONTINUED >

TWEEDIA LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slippershaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait— in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.

RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.

This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
