After enjoying some takeout one recent night, I found my cookie in the to-go bag,

extracted its fortune, and smiled. It read: “Art is the accomplice of love.” This little pearl of wisdom got my wheels turning. I did some googling and found that the quote originated with French writer and philosopher Rémy de Gourmont,

who penned a great number of works around the turn of the 20th century. I also discovered that he continued the aforementioned quote with an even more thought-provoking notion: “Take love away, and there is no longer art.” Regardless of the initial context in which de Gourmont wrote, there is simply no denying that love and art are inextricably linked—and always will be. The most profound creative works show us how art can also bear witness to love, as is the case with Diane Orlov’s Angel of Hope Mosaic Project that’s featured this month on page 22. In the years since her daughter passed away, Orlov has given

ART AND SCIENCE COLLIDE IN THE HANDMADE TRUFFLES OF COCOA TREE CHOCOLATES
ARTICLE CAITLIN CAUSEY PHOTOGRAPHY C2 PHOTOGRAPHY 16
Roaring Fork Lifestyle | February 2020
FOR ABBY MANDEL, LIFE IS INDEED LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES. Who could have predicted that a lifelong sweet tooth and a Ph.D. in taste perception science would lead her to becoming Carbondale’s new chocolate artist? Certainly not Mandel herself. “I had no idea I’d be doing this,” she says. “After my family moved here in 2013, I was still searching for my ‘place’ in the valley. Once I started, though, I loved it. It felt right.” Mandel has adored making desserts for as long as she can remember. At the age of three she began baking with her grandmother, and at eight she was doing cakes by herself. Her hobby blossomed into a passion, and soon a college-aged Mandel found herself debating whether to attend culinary school. She ultimately chose a more traditional path (that’s where the Ph.D. from Cornell comes in), but nowadays Mandel has found a pursuit that combines her degree and her experience with desserts to doubly sweet effect. After
relocating
from
Philadelphia,
Mandel—like many a transplant before her— found high-altitude baking to be maddening. So instead she swapped flour and pesky leavening agents for chocolate, and in 2018 decided to make holiday gifts of homemade truffles for her neighbors. They were a hit. “A neighbor asked if I had a business,” she recalls. “I didn’t, but that idea stuck with me. I thought, why not?” Within weeks, Mandel began testing recipes and experimenting with flavor combinations; by April 2019, she had decided to make a go of it. Her Cocoa Tree Chocolates rolled out a soft launch in September, and by Christmas she was churning out approximately 1,400 truffles per week. That’s a lot of hand-poured, handpainted chocolatey goodness. And her unusual flavors—Ginger and Toasted Sesame, Grasshopper, Banana Bread, and Sachertorte, to name a few— how does she come up with them? This is where the art of chocolate truly collides with Mandel’s background in the science of how we experience taste.

CIULINARY CRE ATIONS (CONTINUED)
“I draw flavor combinations from different backgrounds. Some are more traditional and then there are others that I just like and think sound good—those are more of an experiment,” she says. “Genes determine how we taste things, but health and our sense of smell are factors, too. Smell actually comes into it hugely, because taste plus smell equals flavor.” Mandel has subjected some (ahem, very lucky) friends and family to the taste-testing of her flavor concoctions to determine which ones stand out. “Once I made a peppered apricot one, and about half couldn’t taste the pepper and thought it was bad...but the other half liked it,” she says. “Ultimately I didn’t go with that one!” New flavors that did pass the test include five-spice hazelnut crunch, meyer lemon with pistachio, peach jasmine, and passionfruit coconut. Mandel makes nearly all of her fillings from scratch, uses fine Valrhona and Callebaut chocolate to encapsulate each flavor bomb, and finishes every truffle with vibrant splashes of color by hand. Consider your Valentine’s Day gifting done. Mandel’s creations can be ordered online at CocoaTreeCarbondale.com, but they’re also available in boxes of various sizes at The Launchpad through February 14. 18

ARTIST’S PALETTE
GIVING AN ANGEL ITS WINGS THE ANGEL OF HOPE HAS BEEN YEARS IN THE MAKING. NOW, ITS CREATOR NEEDS THE COMMUNITY’S SUPPORT TO SEE IT SOAR
ARTICLE SUZANNE W. KIRCH PHOTOGRAPHY ESTATEPHOTOVIDEO.COM - CODY ISAMAN
AFTER THE TRAGIC DEATH IN 2014 OF HER DAUGHTER ANNA WILSON, ARTIST DIANE ORLOV HAD A LIFE-CHANGING DREAM. In it, she was being led by an angel, who gave her hope and direction in the midst of despair and loneliness. This dream motivated her, and in the years since, Orlov has been working with hundreds of Roaring Fork Valley residents to manifest her dream angel into a tangible one. As a result, her Angel of Hope Mosaic Project was born. “After Anna’s death,” explains Orlov, “I could feel how isolating grief, loss, and trauma were, so I had to create connections around me. I want to do that with this angel and give people a more magical, joyful place to put their memories by creating an art piece that will someday inspire other families and communities.” She ultimately hopes it will serve as a beacon of light for others, who find themselves grappling with their own losses.
The first step in realizing Orlov’s dream was to work with children and adults from local
schools,
non-profit
organizations,
and interfaith congregations to create over 400 unique, meaningful mosaics that will eventually form the larger angel. This was important to Orlov because, in the words of project board member and friend Allyn Harvey, “She has overcome personal loss by reaching out to so many children and adults and asking them to think about the angels in their lives. Her story is one of hope.” Each artist has contributed to this story with their own designs, choosing from an assortment of semi-precious stones and adhering them onto squares of drywall mesh tape, which were placed in the middle of paper plates. Afterward, each participant wrote a sentence or two on a notecard, explaining the reasoning behind the work. Orlov has archived all of the individual mosaics in crates, where they’ve been awaiting their CONTINUED >

turns to be incorporated into the larger angel mosaic via careful finger grouting. When the 9’x13’ work is completed, it will be a beautiful piece of community art erected atop a gentle slope between St. Stephen Catholic Church and St. Stephen Catholic School, located across the street from Valley View Hospital. When Father Bert Chilson presented the project to parish and school leadership, he says the response was “universally positive and supportive.” Considering its proximity to the hospital, he also points out that “its location will hopefully draw the attention of those seeking consolation and peace in the midst of hurt and unknowing.” By visiting the Angel of Hope, which will be lit up at night, or spending time in solitude in the prayer garden surrounding it, a person will have a chance to reflect on the timeless truism that even out of brokenness, one can find beauty. Three of the mosaics were created by siblings Emily, Anna, and Bridget Carrington, whose older brother Evan didn’t make it home to Glenwood Springs after his day trip to Denver on June 20, 2016—five days short of his 19th birthday. According to their mother Jane Carrington, “Having a memorial with tiles hand-made by Evan’s family brings us such joy; he is remembered not only in our hearts, where he will never be forgotten, but for all to see.” Once the angel is installed, Evan’s sisters will be able to visit it and point out their artistic contributions to friends and family, as well as read their statements in the project’s companion book—all of which will keep the memory of their brother alive. The angel’s surrounding structure, designed by Basalt architect Michael Fuller, will break ground this summer; however, because the project has been privately funded so far, and is not a commissioned piece, it still needs a lot of financial support.

A BUTTERFLY MOSAIC BY EMILY CARRINGTON, IN MEMORY OF HER BROTHER EVAN WHO PASSED AWAY IN 2016.
ORLOV USES SUCH SEMIPRECIOUS STONES AS TURQUOISE, AMETHYST, AGATE, JADE, TOURMALINE, AND LABRADORITE.
Board member Harvey explains that “the project has come very far on a very limited budget, and a lot of volunteer time from Diane. Now, we are in a phase where we need to raise real money to make it all happen. Ideally, we’ll raise about $150,000 to pay for the skilled artisanship needed to put all the pieces together, and for the labor and materials needed to build the site.” For anyone interested in making sure that this dream comes true, there are a couple options. First, a check (with Compassion Aspen/Angel of Hope in the memo) can be dropped off at any Alpine Bank location. Otherwise, it’s possible to find out more either by liking the project on Facebook (Angel of Hope – Roaring Fork Valley) or by visiting AngelOfHopeMosaicProject.com. a tour of her Third Street Center studio in Carbondale. She can be reached via email at fauxdeco@yahoo.com. Ideally, the project will convey Orlov’s personal motto that, “No one should have to fight their battles alone.” February 2020 | Roaring Fork Lifestyle

"I have crates full of visual journals that have become artifacts of my life journey," says Gaynor.
The 15-Minute Energy in Motion Intuitive Collage Supplies: Magazines, a glue stick, 8x10 copy paper or sketchbook, scissors (optional)
+ Step One: “Carve out some quiet time for yourself and/or your family. Light a candle and create a sacred container. Have your supplies laid out and ready to go,” Gaynor says.
+ Step Two: “Take a minute or two and connect with your body through your breath. Scan your body. What are you feeling? What do you notice? You will take these feelings into the next step.”
+ Step Three: “Set a timer for three minutes. Find images that reflect the feelings you identified in your body scan. These images can be positive, negative, or both. Don’t censor or judge what comes.”
+ Step Four: “Now set your timer for seven minutes. Take your images and add them to the page with your glue stick. I prefer ripping my imagery over using scissors, as it keeps me out of a perfection mindset and it’s actually somewhat meditative.”
+ Step Five: “Finally, take three minutes and quickly write about what came forward during this activity. Date your collage, and give it a title, and place it somewhere you will be able to interact with it for the next week.”

LOCALLY OWNED
M A D E W I T H L OV E RFL: YOUR STUDIO IS A TRUE FAMILY OPERATION. TELL US MORE. Yanika Chemerisov: “We are Alex, a photographer; Yelena, a visual artist; and I’m their daughter Yanika, a visual and performing artist. We immigrated to Los Angeles from the former Soviet Union, and after thirty years, recently moved to Basalt, which is my husband’s hometown.” WHAT’S IT LIKE TO WORK SO CLOSELY TOGETHER? Chemerisov: “Both rewarding and challenging. My mother has taught art classes from home for decades, and with my father’s clients coming over for photo shoots, we were used to business being done at home. Because we are so close, we aren’t immune to butting heads. This usually motivates us to find new approaches to communication and respect, with our love always at the center.” YANIKA, WHAT IS YOUR ARTS BACKGROUND? Chemerisov: “Starting with ballet at age three and continuing dancing through childhood, I then found theater at Hollywood Performing Arts High School. I went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater from UC Santa Barbara, and moved home to Hollywood to work in the entertainment industry. I fell in love with folk dance and world music, studied bellydancing, and spent a year in Egypt. I now teach acting, yoga, and dance from various cultures.” WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE ARTISTIC SPIRIT OF THE ROARING FORK VALLEY? Chemerisov: “People here are very supportive of the arts. We love that there are so many galleries, sip-and-paint events, and thriving community theaters.”
SIX QUESTIONS FOR THE CREATIVE FAMILY BEHIND DOWNTOWN BASALT’S NEW ART FUSION STUDIO
IF SOMEONE HAS NEVER TAKEN A CLASS AT THE STUDIO BEFORE, WHAT’S YOUR FIRST RECOMMENDATION? Chemerisov: “Definitely a group art class or one-on-one with Yelena, open to all ages. Teens and adults can come to bellydance classes starting in late spring (I’m taking some time off right now with my new baby),

club, sharing stories, drawing, crafting, etc.” WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU IN 2020? Chemerisov: “We are excited to offer theatrical recitals and gallery openings, oil portrait and mural commissions, and to bring in more people for photo shoots. The space is set up for professional studio lighting, but we have the lovely Fryingpan River just outside, providing wonder-

between the abundant natural beauty here, and people’s instinctual pull toward creativity and expression.”
