giving back, philanthropy, generosity or just getting involved…they are all bright lights in what has become a rather divisive society that is increasingly lacking in bright lights. Bless them all. These days, everyone seems to have an ax to grind—liberal, conservative, middle of the road, it doesn’t matter. The assumption is that if you do not agree with me, then something is really wrong with you. Your opinion is worthless and you may very well be as worthless as your opinion or belief. WOW! A great example is a recent article by Mary McNamara published in the LA Times tearing apart the film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” along with its Creator and Director Quentin Tarantino, the script, the actors and maybe even the assistants that fetched the cast and crew their lunch. She decided that because the film revisited the past, somehow it was an homage to the controversial ideas of MAGA. HUH??? Did she see the same movie I did, or is she as

I am using her rant as an example of why it gives all of us at Lifestyle so much joy to see smiling, loving faces like those featured in this month’s issue. Give love, affection and compassion to those who need it the most. That’s what really makes America great.

noting that PIE, ICL and Lasik can even help with genetic issues, such as “lazy eye.” Often a hereditary condition, lazy eye can be improved and even cured with proper treatment. “The sooner we fix the problem, the better the chances to gain vision with the lazy eye,” says Dr. Khanna, who recently helped a 13-year-old girl with her lazy eye condition. “It’s okay to use these procedures in young people when appropriate,” he says, noting that fixing the problem, rather than treating the symptoms is his goal. “Just like with a fracture, if you fix the problem, it will heal; if you just treat the symptoms (i.e., pain), the likelihood of the problem going away is small,” he says. Building trust with patients is also an important element of Dr. Khanna’s practice. “They have to have a lot of trust in me to allow me to work on their eyes,” he notes, adding that he makes it a point to develop trust with his patients. His caring demeanor and supportive, knowledgeable and warm staff ensure each patient’s comfort by addressing their concerns before beginning treatment. “I’ve performed surgery on my own mother, neighbors, physicians, children and adults of all ages,” says Dr. Khanna. Many patients are referred to him by people he’s helped. He encourages those with eye issues to schedule a consultation with his office. “A skilled surgeon, with a good bedside manner, who utilizes the latest technology and is supported by a warm and caring staff can help ease any fears about eye surgery,” he adds. Addressing your eye ailments not only improves vision, but often changes one’s psychological persona, eliminates headaches and enables one to have a better quality of life. Regarding payment options, Dr. Khanna says insurance plans often contribute to Lasik and PIE procedures when they can help improve one’s disability. His office also offers affordable no-interest monthly payment plans to help make the technology accessible to everyone who needs it.
To learn more about treatment options for eye ailments, schedule a consultation with Dr. Khanna at 805.230.2126. Khanna Vision Institute is located at 31824 Village Center Road F, in Westlake Village. Learn more at KhannaInstitute.com.

Los Angeles Waves will also participate in a beach clean-up with Heal the Bay, contributing to the organization’s efforts to remove tons of pollution from beaches, waterways and inland neighborhoods to reduce blight, protect marine animals and boost the regional economy. WAVES OF FLAGS Additionally, all alumni, family and friends are invited to join Seaver College and George Pepperdine College Alumni Relations for Waves of Flags. For this annual tradition, Waves will meet at Pepperdine’s Malibu campus to enjoy lunch together, install flags in Alumni Park and assemble paracord bracelets for Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit that has delivered more than 2.3 million care packages filled with items donated by grateful American and service-friendly companies that want to express their support for heroes serving overseas and here at home. Step Forward Day at Pepperdine will also include food served by In-N-Out Burger, as well as games, music and other festivities. Additionally, there will be a Waves of Flags installation commemorating every life lost during the tragedy of September 11, 2001. “Our theme for the year is a sports theme,” Rivero says. “Connecting to our unique mission statement, we are using Step Forward Day as a kick-off to our year of service. In ways that other universities invest in sports programs, we invest in service and our communities. Our shirts will don the saying, ‘Community First’ on the back, showing our commitment to service to the community. Please join our team as we fight systemic injustice in our community.” The ultimate goal for Step Forward Day is “to intentionally connect our community,” Rivero further emphasizes. “We want to help redefine the idea of service by placing the community first,” he says. “We believe service can happen on multiple planes by creating awareness, physically serving with the community, and creating advocates for the future. We hope Step Forward Day is an event that can initiate the connection to the community and provides us opportunity to serve them in meaningful ways.” To register for a volunteer activity, or for more information about Step Forward Day, visit Pepperdine.edu/Alumni/events/Step-Forward-Day.htm. Malibu’s 2nd Poet Laureate Shares Joy of Her Craft ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN
POETRY-LOVING LOCALS HAVE LIKELY CROSSED PATHS WITH MALIBU’S SECOND POET LAUREATE, ELLEN REICH, A LONGTIME AREA RESIDENT AND PROLIFIC WRITER WHO ENJOYS SHARING HER LOVE OF POETRY WITH THE COMMUNITY. Appointed to the post in March, Ellen teaches writing classes for seniors and hosts poetry readings at her home and throughout the city at various locales. “I have been active for many years with poetry in Malibu by hosting Vital Poetry at my home,” shares Ellen. “People bring poems they love and poems they have written and we share them.” Avidly attending and performing at poetry events through the years at Beyond Baroque, where she enjoys meeting and mixing with other poets, Ellen recently read two poems at the Legacy Park dedication of a sculpture created by Emanuel Hatzof and generously donated by Dan Sandel. Also a member of poetry workshops where members critique each other’s poems, Ellen, along with friends Ann Buxie and Ellen Cohen, officiates quarterly Poetry by the Sea readings. The next Poetry by the Sea event takes place September 22, at 3 p.m. at The Malibu Methodist Church.

Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase samples or a bowl during the event and taste about 15 to 18 different homemade vegan or meat chili recipes. “Best in Show” prizes will be awarded to the tastiest recipes.
This is the second year volunteering for the chili cook-off and carnival for Amalia Alvarez, resident of Oxnard. Her son has been participating in BGCM’s programs over the past four years. Alvarez will help with selling tickets at this year’s event. “I like it because I am helping my son and other children,” says Alvarez. “It’s fun to contribute to the community.”
According to Kasey Earnest, BGCM executive director of 15 years, last year, each chili participant made about 65 gallons of chili and sold out. The focus of the chili cook-off and carnival is on nonprofit organizations serving Malibu youth.
YOUTH FIRST BGCM has been a staple in the Malibu community since 2000. Some 10,000 kids have participated in BGCM’s programs, which

$75,000 was raised from last year’s chili cook-off and carnival for the charity partners. New features at the event will include a new carnival company, Helms & Sons, food vendors, a beer and wine lounge, chili cook-off merchandise with hoodies, t-shirts and hats, tote bags, live DJ performances, a Kid’s Corner where children can make jewelry from beads and other arts and crafts, a 24-foot rock climbing wall, and the Johnny Strange Legacy Skateboard competition. The Malibu Village miniramp will also be available for public skate and practice sessions. 32
