Can you imagine what it is like to never hear one word from your child? To never know if she is in pain or when she is feeling ill? I knew she was not in control of her actions or behaviors. Even worse, I knew there was nothing I could do about it. I cannot "fix" her brain. I am left to make daily decisions that have completely changed my outlook on the world around me. I have found that "in acceptance lieth peace". (Hannah Hurnard) As we welcome the New Year, my hope is that if you are living with a situation that you cannot change that you find peace in acceptance. Those who wish for personal discoveries, stress reduction, meditation, and fellowship, seek solace at the sanctuary to reconnect to their bodies, minds, and hearts. Though a mere 50 miles from Atlanta, Elohee seems, a world away. Elohee’s humble beginnings rose from one woman’s feverish search for healing and serenity during her tumultuous battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The find was 220 acres of Landsong, 30 acres of which Elohee is nestled. Eve Cook remains cancer free, and has dedicated her life, in sharing the transformative power of nature, with those desiring respite from the vortex of life’s trials and tribulations. Workshops are centered around personal development, yoga, meditation, art, and music. The belief is that guests can tap into powerful sources of energy through rest and balance. Delicious, nutritious dishes are harvested from organic and locally grown ingredients. A favorite is the toasted pumpkin seed cilantro pesto sprinkled over a peppery arugula salad. A yoga retreat at Elohee may be the perfect means to return home feeling renewed and grounded to handle the daily stresses of life. A sanctuary enveloped in nature, Elohee provides the ideal environment for drawing upon nature’s visual and covert elements to heal the human body, mind, and spirit. Guests are encouraged to connect with the full force of their surroundings. The retreat’s Bald Mountain Center sits at the summit of Bald Mountain and offers panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thanksgiving House is located close to a 100 foot waterfall, and the Tea House is available 24 hours, for journaling, reading, and tea sipping. Three trails spanning two miles, traverse ecosystems that include fern and beech forests, a natural spring, and a Grand Hemlock. Barely visible among the foliage and cocooned in the background, a stone bench provides a center for reflection. The waterfall at Elohee cascades down the mountain side into a pool encircled by large rocks. A red bridge stands over the fall and acts as a special spot for bridging ceremonies. The Fire Ring sits at the highest and center point of Bald Mountain, as the origin of Elohee’s creation, in thoughts and words. The ring reigns as a tribute to the family’s transformation from crisis and fear, to strength and joy, during Eve Cook’s journey with cancer. Burning bright with flames in Elohee Retreat Center rests in the North Georgia mountains in the foothills of the Blue Ridge near the village of Sautee Nacoochee. To learn about the retreat and its offerings, contact Eve Cook, Elohee’s Executive Director at info@ elohee.org. 770-316-9195. www.elohee.org

WORRY AND FEAR ARE COMMON EMOTIONS THAT PLAGUE PARENTS WHEN THEIR YOUNG ONES ARE SICK. I can attest to this, first hand. When my four year old was rushed to the emergency room at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta because of escalating, excruciating pain, I prayed that his diagnosis would be “growing pains.” To my dismay my Connor was diagnosed with a raging bone infection, rushed into surgery and spent the next 11 days under the watchful care of a team of clinicians. Soon to be nine years old, my brave boy proudly shares stories about the four-inch scar on his left thigh, and the “cool” memories of his hospital stay. Ask him what they are and he’ll quickly name them off - the gentle doggie that came to visit daily when he was bed-bound, the red wagon ride that toured him to the beautiful train model in the hospital lobby, and the smiling clown who stopped by to give him a hug. Children’s handful of programs remains an integral part of the non profit’s mission of going above and beyond medical treatment and cure for their young patients’ coping, healing, and recovery. “I love it because for a second I completely forgot I was even in a hospital.”
CHILD LIFE: Children, along with their families and caregivers, often need help coping with the stress and uncertainty of illness, injury and treatment. Certified Child Life specialists engage in therapeutic play with their young patients to help reduce fear, anxiety and even pain during hospital stays. These specialists provide coping mechanisms to patients and help patients distract from being in the hospital. This may include music therapy, playing games, coloring, etc. MUSIC THERAPY: Music Therapy services at Children's are provided by board-certified and state-licensed music therapists. Music therapists sing and play instruments, encourage children to write songs to facilitate positive coping, emotional expression, and relaxation. They also use music to reach non-musical goals, including increased deep breathing, relaxation, fine/gross motor skills, and emotional expression. Music therapies are also available for families by assisting in the creation of legacy projects with and for families (lullabies, songs, or video/music projects for patients) and provide siblings with the opportunity to express emotions. EMPTY NESTER PROFESSIONALS WITH A FAST-PACED LIFESTYLE DESIRED A SPECIAL SPACE FOR RELAXATION IN THIS FAMILY ROOM LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF A 6000 SQUARE FOOT TRADITIONAL STYLE HOME IN AN EXCLUSIVE SANDY SPRINGS NEIGHBORHOOD. The 13’W X15’L area, with a 9 foot ceiling, sits adjacent to the dining room, kitchen, and entry hall, and faces a landscaped backyard. The couple craved a more comfortable and cozy room to relax in after dinner. The original room, with its various shades of gray, felt cold, drab, and small. A three-foot area for traffic flow exposed bare hardwoods, and all room furniture, of traditional and transitional elements, were confined to the inside of a center rug. Chairs deemed too small to accommodate a lengthy frame, and cushions, too soft for easy seating. The family room, part of a three-room remodel, became a transformation project to meet the clients’ needs. INVITING YET FUNCTIONAL VIBE FOR LOUNGING. If It Doesn’t Challenge Yo u, I t Wo n ’ t C h a n g e Yo u AS WE ENTER INTO THE NEW YEAR, WE WANT TO BE CHALLENGED, NOT COMPLACENT. That’s easier said than done, right? We have this dream of being fit and healthy, but we also have days filled with cooking, cleaning, working, school drop offs, appointments, and the list goes on. We have excuses disguised as our to-do list and we put off this dream of being “fit and healthy.” Fayette County residents, Ezzie and Jodie Raulls recognized this quandary and set out to shift our thinking. Ezzie has been an athlete his entire life. He was a student athlete at the University of Alabama, earning a scholarship. His dreams were fulfilled and life was headed in the right direction. However, due to an injury, he was put on probation and his progress halted. “Although I was in a great situation with an opportunity to really fulfill my dreams I didn’t process it that way,” Ezzie recalls. “Because I was in a bad head space, I was in college and on the streets.” This conundrum led to his arrest for armed robbery / burglary of an occupied dwelling. Ezzie spent 6yrs and 10mos in the Florida Department of Corrections, “My first day in DOC was the most humiliating moment of my life. I was eight hours away from home and nobody could save me. That was my very first time being strip searched and it was humiliating. Hearing that I was now the property of the Florida DOC was awful. I felt less than a human being and of course they treated me as such.”
HOW ONE GYM IS CHANGING THE WAY WE WORKOUT
After 6yrs, he was placed in a work release at Subway. He knew this wasn’t his calling, leading him to apply for a job at Gold’s Gym in Tallahassee. Here, he was encouraged and inspired, remembering his calling for a life of success, health and fitness. The icing on the cake at Gold’s Gym? He met the love of his life, Jodie.

people who put their to do list on hold to squeeze in a killer workout. You will high five each other, pat each other on the back and secretly roll your eyes behind Ezzie’s back as he screams, “HARDER, FASTER, BETTER!!” You will never do the same workout twice. The music is bumpin’ and the energy level is at an all time high. It’s a mix of challenging exercises that leave your muscles saying, “Oh hey, yeah, remember me?” Ezzie and Jodie couldn’t be more proud of their past, their present and their future. “Burn boot camp is truly unlike any other gym we have attended or been a part of. We cannot wait for our next location in Fayetteville to open.” As Ezzie and Jodie say, “if it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you!”
