F IS FOR “FOODIE,” A PERSON WITH A PARTICULAR INTEREST IN FOOD. Someone who’s always up for trying new places and has a refined but adventurous palate. And this month at Hendersonville Lifestyle, we’re all about feasting with foodies as we just scratch the surface of all the fine eats and drinks our community has to offer. The dog days of summer brought us ice cream, refreshing salads and cocktails enjoyed by the pool as we celebrated the Fourth of July, vacations and abundant sunshine. But the autumnal days of October bring us chili cooking on the stove, seasonal fruits and veggies and pumpkin spice. Pretty much everything we need as we celebrate football season, some warm-weather relief and shorter days moving toward the end of the year.

NESTLED IN THE QUIET HILLS OF NEARBY ROBERTSON COUNTY LIES A MAGICAL PLACE KNOWN AS FIDDLE DEE FARMS, HOME OF SHUCKLES CORN MAZE AND PUMPKIN PATCH. Just 20 minutes from Hendersonville, the 57-acre homestead is a must-visit destination for family fun. While the farm offers special activities throughout the year, it really comes alive during the fall when the maze and pumpkin patch are open. Shuckles Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch offers a variety of family-friendly activities for children and adults of all ages. One of its most popular attractions is the corn maze, an 8-acre labyrinth that is sure to delight every escape artist. While Shuckles offers all of the usual daytime twist-andturn challenges, it also offers a special “Maze by Flashlight” adventure once the sun goes down. Owned by Hendersonville residents Craig and Karen Pulley, the maze was originally opened in 2010 in Gallatin adjacent to Station Camp High School. They operated the maze at this location for five years before relocating to their new Fiddle Dee Farms property four years ago. Now in its ninth season, Shuckles Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch will draw thousands of visitors during its 2018 fall season. In addition to individual visitors, Fiddle Dee Farms also welcomes large groups and organizations. Many area companies, schools, churches and civic groups choose to hold their events at the farm each year. Ironically, the Pulleys did not initially set out to be farmers, much less corn maze operators. “About 10 years ago, we visited a friend who had opened a corn maze outside of Atlanta. After seeing his setup, Karen was hooked. She knew right away that she wanted us to have a corn maze of our own in Tennessee. Initially, I was skeptical. However, Karen’s persistence won me over. She convinced me that we could do it, and we did,” Craig says. Since moving to a larger location, the Pulleys have dramatically increased their attractions and activities. This fall, Fiddle Dee Farms will offer more than 30 activities each day spread across the entire property. Individual events include pumpkin decorating, hayrides, bonfires, a farm animal zoo, giant pillow jumping, a playground fort, a 40-foot super slide and music. In addition, award-winning children’s entertainer and magician Bruce Amato will perform two shows daily on Saturdays and Sundays during October. In between scheduled activities, the Pulleys and their staff keep things hopping with music and short games, including corn shucking, tugs-of-war and bubble blowing contests. From opening time until closing time, there is never a dull moment at Fiddle Dee Farms. To keep visitors fueled up for their activities, Fiddle Dee Farms also serves a terrific menu of fun food and pumpkin-themed desserts at its Butterstick Bakery and Fiddler’s Stop cafés. Scrumptious items include Angus burgers, Italian sausage sandwiches, pumpkin bread, apple fritters and their signature item: deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Beginning in early 2019, Fiddle Dee Farms will take on an entirely new dimension with the

RED, WHITE
HOPS & VINE
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY RICK MURRAY
MANY FOLKS ENJOY GOOD WINES WHEN ENTERTAINING AND DINING. From whites to reds, wines have never been more popular. Whether clear, white chardonnays or deep red burgundies, there is no shortage of wines from which to choose. While most oenophiles make selections based upon taste, aroma and texture, savvy buyers also factor in cost. Cost is influenced by several factors, including oak barrel fermentation, aging time and terroir (location and methods for growing grapes). In this article, we examine a variety of white and red wines that run the gamut from inexpensive to expensive. First, let’s take a look at some white wines that are available locally.

As with white wine, there are various types of red wine that appeal to different palates. From zinfandels to merlots, reds from many vintners are available in Hendersonville. DON MIGUEL’S JUICERY AND RUSTIC KITCHEN FRESH, HEALTHY FOOD ON THE GO ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY RICK MURRAY
MIGUEL MARTINEZ BEGAN HIS CAREER IN THE FOOD BUSINESS IN SAN DIEGO ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO, FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HIS GRANDFATHER AND HIS FATHER. He worked at several different upscale eateries over the years, learning every aspect of restaurant life, including serving, cooking and managing the business. Over time, his love of the food business became a family passion as he met and married his wife, Jackie, while working as a server at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. After moving from San Diego to Nashville, Miguel decided to start a healthy food truck business. Although he was confident in his restaurant skills and experience, he knew that he would be taking a risk. He was well aware that the food truck industry has traditionally been dominated by venues serving barbecue, fried foods and desserts. By offering a Baja coastal menu featuring light, healthy foods, juices and smoothies, he would be navigating uncharted territory, particularly in Middle Tennessee. “So much of the food truck scene is dominated by barbecue, burgers and heavy foods. We knew that by offering only healthy foods, juices and smoothies, we would be taking a risk, but we felt it was worth it,” Miguel says. However, Miguel was not to be deterred. He started Don Miguel’s Juicery + Rustic Kitchen in Hendersonville in 2015. He was committed to serving a healthy menu using locally sourced ingredients that were prepared fresh each day. At first, Miguel tested out his concept at the local Hendersonville farmers market. To his delight, his menu of fresh wraps, tortas, juices and açai bowls proved to be very popular with the locals. It did not take long before happy customers began spreading the word about his food. Soon afterward, Regina Gammons, owner of Hendersonville Produce, offered him the opportunity to park his food truck at her store on a regular basis, giving his business even more exposure. Today, Miguel and Jackie take their food truck on the road each week to a variety of Middle Tennessee locations. They have developed a loyal group of customers who eagerly await their regular visits at local business sites. During their busy season, May through October, Miguel and Jackie serve at least four to six times each week. In addition, they also work a large number of outdoor festivals and fitness events each year. “We are not your typical food truck, and that makes it exciting,” he says. 615.992.4020,

A TRIO OF COOKBOOKS OFFERS PALATEPLEASING RECIPES FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY SEVERAL YEARS AGO, MANY FOOD INDUSTRY PROGNOSTICATORS FORECAST THE DEMISE OF OLD-FASHIONED HARDCOVER COOKBOOKS. Given the rapid growth of e-readers and social media sites such as Facebook and Pinterest, it seemed that the days of physical cookbooks were numbered. However, in recent years, these predictions have proven to be inaccurate. Fueled by the rise in television food networks and the star power of celebrity chefs, cookbooks have never been more popular. No doubt about it, there is just something special and comforting about the feel of a traditional cookbook. Here’s a look at three best-sellers that belong in every kitchen. the art going and make it fun again,” Darcy says. She is also a strong advocate for helping families save time and money through home meal preparation. “Cooking at home is the most effective way to stay on a food budget. Almost every meal you cook at home will be less expensive and often take less time than a similar meal that you might purchase out,” she adds. As part of her cooking outreach, Darcy likes to teach new and prospective cooks how to properly furnish their kitchens. From recipes to cookware, Darcy knows that a well-equipped kitchen can turn cooking from drudgery to joy.
