It's Summertime, Summertime, Sum-Sum Summertime SUMMERTIME IS A MAGICAL SEASON. The kids are out of school, the sunshine seems never-ending and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood—sleepaway camp, family vacations and swimming until your fingers shriveled like prunes. We also celebrate our nation’s independence, host parties for our friends and family (see Page 32 for a recipe for our region's famous Fruit Tea) and, if we’re lucky, take a scenic road trip, such as the one we've outlined to Old Stone Fort Park (Page 22). In this issue of Green Hills Lifestyle, we remind ourselves why summer is a season of opportunity. When’s the last time you played tourist in your hometown? This month is also a great opportunity to discover our local music scene at

Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils). The park’s staff provides various special events throughout the year, and the next featured one occurs July 12, Pathfinder Advanced Camp. This advanced overnight camp is designed for teenagers 13-15 years old. It’s for two evenings and is geared for those who want a little bit of a challenge during their summer camp experience. During this camp, participants learn basic and primitive fire-starting skills, compass navigation and orientation, flat water paddle techniques, fishing on the river and other outdoor survival details. Included in the registration fee are two dinners, two breakfasts, one lunch and snacks throughout the day, as well as a commemorative park T-shirt. Pricing for this camp is $40 per camper and $20 per accompanying adult, although parents/adults are not required to attend. Those interested in overall camping need to reserve spots before October, which is when Leigh says the park’s campgrounds will close for several months’ worth of renovations.

WHAT THEY DO Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary is completely funded by donations, grants and FUNdraisers. Their primary goal is to find placements for otherwise “unadoptable” dogs; therefore, they don’t charge adoption fees to help to cover expenses. All dogs that come into the program are fully vetted prior to living at the sanctuary or being placed in a forever foster home. They ensure dogs at the sanctuary and those in forever foster homes get monthly preventatives, required vetting and any other special needs they may have. They estimate a dog in their program costs approximately $1,500 per year for care. Donations can be made by PayPal, including setting up recurring, monthly payments. Or checks can be sent to the Mount Juliet address. Because the sanctuary is an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, all donations are tax-deductible (EIN 45-5084188).

HOW YOU CAN HELP + As a Forever Foster parent, you don’t have to worry about the often-higher costs associated with having a senior dog. OFSDS provides vetting, as well as medications and preventatives needs for your old friend. + The Sanctuary also provides information and help with your senior dog challenges. Foster parents are never alone. + As a forever foster parent, as long as you’re able to provide a wonderful home for your old friend, they will not be moved to another foster home or adopted out. Of course, if situations ever arise so that foster parents are no longer able to care for an old friend, the sanctuary will take them back into the program and find another lifelong foster home for them. + Foster parents can meet and talk with other OFSDS forever foster families and volunteers to broaden knowledge of senior dogs, their joys and challenges. + Best of all, when you become a forever foster parent for Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, you save a life!
