Learning to Thrive with Avenida Cool Springs Nikki Jo Boston Avenida Cool Springs Resident Enrichment Director At Avenida Cool Springs, we believe that providing our residents with a rich array of services and programs—along with a great place to call home—is the key to active, healthy, and engaged living. That is why we offer our Five to ThriveTM Resident Enrichment Program, which was developed utilizing findings from a 10-year study on aging. The study found that five key areas have been shown to have a direct impact on healthy aging: Life Activity, Material Security, Physical and Functional Fitness, Cognitive Efficacy, and Social Resources. Our Five to Thrive program addresses these five areas with daily classes, events, and social opportunities. As the Resident Enrichment Director at Avenida Cool Springs, I manage the community’s rich calendar of physically invigorating, mentally enriching, and socially stimulating activities and resources. My goal is to make sure each resident is able to engage in programs that support their passions and enhance their quality of life, while addressing our five key areas of healthy aging. Let’s explore one of those key areas in more detail: Social Resources. Research has found that people with more social support enjoy longer lives. There is real power in coming together—social engagement can result in a stronger immune system, and thus a stronger ability to fight colds and other ailments, as well as improved feelings of well-being, increased serotonin levels, and decreased levels of depression. Plus, staying social is good for the brain, since people who socialize regularly are less likely to suffer from cognitive ailments. Simple conversations with friends over coffee can go a long way in keeping you healthy and active for years to come. At Avenida, we gladly offer numerous Social Resources to our residents to help bring them together for fun, engaging, and stimulating conversations and activities.

OUR FIVE TO THRIVE CALENDAR PROVIDES A NUMBER OF SOCIAL RESOURCES TO OUR RESIDENTS: Morning coffee chats

BRYAN ADAMS SAID IT BEST IN "SUMMER OF '69" WHEN HE SANG, "WHEN I LOOK BACK NOW, THE SUMMER SEEMED TO LAST FOREVER, AND IF I HAD THE CHOICE, I'D ALWAYS WANT TO BE THERE—THOSE WERE THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE." What is it about summer that makes us wish for it longingly and miss it when it's gone? I'll tell ya. The kids are out of school, families are planning vacations and everybody is swimming until our fingers and toes are shriveled like prunes. We also celebrate our nation’s independence with fireworks and barbecues—in fact, check out our Greek salad recipe for an easy and refreshing dish to bring to yours. And if you're still deciding where to take your summer vacation, you'll want to read what we have to say about cruising! Premier Preschool Nurtures Learning Through Balance Children start learning from the moment they are born, and research shows that the first five years of a child’s life hold the most potential for development. That’s a lot of pressure for parents! So, what is the best way to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for learning? “We know every child and family is different – there is no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and learning,” said Rebecca Frizzell, Franchise Owner of Primrose School of Cool Springs. “At Primrose®, our approach is all about balance: balance between purposeful play and guidance from teachers, balance between traditional early education methods and the latest research, and balance between different developmental areas.” The Primrose approach, called Balanced Learning®, offers specific and varied experiences that spark children’s development regardless of their learning style. Balanced Learning is exclusive to Primrose, created from the best early education wisdom. It balances purposeful play with nurturing guidance from teachers to encourage curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion. Created from the best early education wisdom. Primrose pulled the best from well-known methods, such as Montessori, Piaget and Vygotsky, and blended those methods with the best from today’s leading experts in early education. Balances purposeful play with nurturing guidance from teachers. Balanced Learning balances play with guidance and instruction from teachers, which maximizes each child’s opportunity to learn, make choices and become independent, no matter his or her learning style. Encourages curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion. Intellectual, creative, physical and social-emotional skills are embedded in children’s daily experiences, not exercised once a week or if the teacher has time. Through Balanced Learning, children learn and practice concepts in language and literacy;

science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM); social studies; music; physical development and health; and compassion, kindness and life skills continuously throughout the day. Balanced Learning is an integrated approach, meaning skills and concepts are reinforced through different, yet connected experiences. For example, a learning theme might be living things. When the children go outside to play they will observe the grass, trees, insects and birds. Then they may explore the different stages of a plant’s life cycle at the free-choice Science Center, read a book about living things with the teacher, and write a story or paint a picture based on living things. Themes, skills and concepts are explored for multiple weeks so that children can explore each topic in a variety of ways. As a result, learning comes naturally and is so much fun. “At Primrose, we believe who children become is just as important as what they know,” said Frizzell. “Character development and life skills are also key components of Balanced Learning.” Traits such as honesty, cooperation, generosity and empathy are nurtured in children on a daily basis. With the help of the Primrose Friends puppets, teachers model and teach these important character traits and skills through books, discussions, art projects, puppet play, games and role playing. Balanced Learning is more than a curriculum. Daily classroom experiences; classroom equipment, materials, books and toys; training; assessment and school-home connection resources are all intentionally aligned to engage children in developmentally-appropriate learning. On the surface children simply have fun and engage in purposeful play, but underneath is a comprehensive and connected approach that provides an unparalleled early learning experience.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO DISH UP DELIGHTFUL DESIGNS

A Beach House with Southern Charm

Organic fabrics and shades always are great on windows, and they add so much texture to a room. They look fabulous in a beach house. Many believe they’re much more interesting than wooden blinds.

CREATIVELY TRANSFORMING LIVABLE SPACES IS A WHOLE PROCESS, A DETAILED APPROACH THAT LISA AND LEAH SELVIG ADAMANTLY RELISH. As interior designers and owners of Invision Home Staging and Design, this mother-daughter team enjoys the planning, hunting, organizing and placement of staging new or remodeled homes. Lisa and Leah have been frequently asked to lend their design prowess to Floridian beach homes, lake houses and vacation rental properties. They've been incorporating their own version of coastal living styles, often blending natural and organic looks with textures and unusual color combinations, such as navy, oatmeal and mustard. They place rattan with jute and linens. "We often start with determining the best painting and lighting options because those are two areas where you get the most benefits from the money invested," says Lisa. "We like to achieve authentic, sophisticated looks while still evoking comfy, warm feelings," says Leah. To that end, Leah and Lisa say they're including reflective surfaces and certain metals in their coastal style of design while mixing it up with gems found at various home decor retailers. An inspiring example of their beach home staging recently was done in a home within the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, a house owned by a Nashville resident. Working with a four-bedroom bayfront cottage, Leah and Lisa created an inviting, but worry-free, look for the rental property. Lisa and Leah say they work hard at listening to each client's objectives because they want them to love their homes as their retreats and sanctuaries.

This perfect beach getaway is located right inside the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, FL and available to rent through VRBO. Please visit: oursoutherncharmbeachrental.com/ vrbo.com/1506476 24

Relaxed living is the aim by marrying functionality with aesthetics. Choose materials that are durable but that look luxurious and relaxing.

The paint in main living spaces should be peaceful and neutral. Let the art, textiles and lighting do the communicating.

Beach homes should remain neutral and casual. Don’t draw too much attention to the home through the use of prominent, audacious exterior colors. Allow beach houses to blend in nicely with their surroundings.

CARNTON PLANTATION Carnton is a two-story plantation mansion built in 1826 and completed in 1830 by Nashville Major Randal McGavock. The land was used for farming wheat, corn and potatoes as well as raising thoroughbred horses. After Randal passed in 1843, his son John inherited the plantation. In 1864, during the five-hour Battle of Franklin, John and his family converted their home into a field hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers and assisted the nurses and surgeons as much as they could. Since so many died in the house, and it was the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War, many say the home is haunted. Next to the McGavock family cemetery on the property, John made a twoacre cemetery for nearly 1,500 Confederate soldiers. The surrounding acreage was all battlefield. Now the house is a museum, and visitors can see the blood stains still on the second floor during their tour. CONTINUED >

RECOGNIZING FRANKLIN’S CULTURE & HISTORY

(CON TI N UED)

CARTER HOUSE Fountain Branch Carter built the brick home in 1830 on 19 acres of land. Fountain decided to pursue farming and grow wheat, Irish potatoes, corn, sweet potatoes and oats. In 1850, a cotton gin was added to their farm, and by 1960, the Carters owned 285 acres of land. The farm grew and prospered steadily until the Battle of Franklin. On the morning of the battle, Union Army General Jacob D. Cox took over the parlor of Carter House and temporarily made it his headquarters. He saw the land around the home to be great for defense and had trenches dug just south of the house, destroying many of their barns. The intense battle left permanent bullet holes in the house and outbuildings. Fountain and his family sought protection in their basement during the entirety of the battle—except for Fountain’s son, Captain Tod Carter, who was returning to his childhood home as well as fighting for the Confederates. Wounded Tod Carter made it back to the house the next day to die surrounded by his family. During the museum tour, visitors will see the room where he passed at age 24. 32

LOTZ HOUSE German immigrant Johann Albert Lotz was a talented carpenter whose hand-carved designs are featured throughout the home, especially in the three custom fireplaces. In 1869, Lotz was threatened out of the home after making a controversial design on a piano. The Heritage Foundation saved the Lotz House from being demolished in 1974, and J.T. Thompson purchased it in 1991 to restore its historical elements and turn it into the museum it is today. The Lotz family joined the Carters, who were close neighbors, in their basement for 17 hours during the battle as the Lotzes did not think their wooden house could weather the storm. Lotz had bought 5 acres of land for their house from Fountain Carter in 1855. Directly after the battle, the Lotz home served as a hospital for soldiers from both sides until the following summer. Visitors can see the blood stains and Lotz’s patchwork on the floor from where a cannonball crashed through the roof. Matilda Lotz, Johann’s daughter was only six years old at the time of the battle and grew to be a highly recognized painter in Paris and California, where she lived and studied. Six of her original oil paintings are presented in the Lotz house today.

FORT GRANGER Fort Granger was named after Union General Gordon Granger. In 1862, the 275,000-square-foot fort was strategically built by Union soldiers north of the Harpeth River on Figuers Bluff and parallel to the railroad leading to Nashville in order to guard it. Thousands of troops were stationed there, prepared with their weapons, but were soon ordered to leave. The cavalier was at the highest elevation and withheld the most artillery for an ideal attacking post. The powder magazine with a shed built over it to keep it dry was stationed near the middle of the fort and held more than 1,000rounds. The fort was used twice in 1863 when Confederate cavalry forces tried to raid the fort. That June, two Confederates were hung for spying and giving false information to a colonel. Today, travelers can take a short hike from Pinkerton Park to the preserved remains and earthworks around the perimeter of the fort. July 2019 | Franklin Lifestyle

IT IS SAID A PICTURE IS WORTH 1,000 WORDS, BUT FOR MISTY WESTEBBE, A UNIQUE FRANKLIN PHOTOGRAPHER, A SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH CAN TELL A WHOLE STORY. As you walk up to Misty’s home and studio just west of downtown Franklin, you’ll find it hard not to be mesmerized by what your eyes first take in—a little blue house with a white picket fence nestled on 2 1/2 acres of pristine property. As you stroll along the winding path behind her home, you’ll discover distinctive props ranging from a tire swing and ’57 Chevy to a collection of rustic barn doors and a newly completed hobbit house, a Nashville music cabin built by her husband and business partner Bruce. “I am more than just a portraitist; I strive to be a storyteller,” says Misty. “Every prop on our property has a story which makes photographing on our land even more special. Our focus is always on the people, but the props make it exciting and fun for everyone.” Although Misty refers to herself as a family photographer, she explains, “This doesn’t mean you just do families. It means you’re there for the maternity shoot, the newborn shoot, the high school senior shoot and beyond.” Misty also offers timeless painted portraits. Many gifts are quickly forgotten, but an original Misty Westebbe painted portrait is the ultimate heirloom—a treasure that will be passed down for generations.

GIVING BACK

Giving Back is Good for the Soul ARTICLE ASHLEY HUTCHESON

FRANKLIN AND WILLIAMSON COUNTY ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE HOME TO MANY NONPROFITS, CHARITABLE GROUPS AND BUSINESSES THAT FOCUS ON GIVING BACK. Often when you speak to an owner, ambassador or volunteer of one of these organizations, much time is spent praising the local generosity and open arms of this community. These three local organizations rely on that community support and have really found their niche.

Love on Wheels WHAT THEY DO Love on Wheels came to be when founder and Veterinarian Dr. Kathy Kunkel learned that foster children are handed trash bags to collect their belongings when changing homes. Located in the back of her animal hospital, the organization provides suitcases, necessities and a note of encouragement to foster children as they relocate to a new home. Love on Wheels is in 45 of the 95 Tennessee counties with expansion expected into Indiana and New Jersey and, hopefully, the remaining counties in Tennessee. HOW YOU CAN HELP You can have your child write a note to a foster child of the same age, volunteer your time or donate needed items. Host an underwear drive to help collect much-needed diapers and undies. Creative? You can visit Love-On-Wheels.org and find directions on making a no-sew fleece throw to donate. CONTINUED >

Retrieving Independence WHAT THEY DO Founded in 2012, Retrieving Independence provides training to local inmates to train service dogs that provide love, dignity and change to the trainer. Inmates who are in good standing and show interest interview to be trainers. Often its a story of redemption since this may be the first time the trainer interacts with unconditional love. After two years, the dogs are placed, and the trainers get to meet the recipient of their hard work. Retrieving Independence is looking forward to moving into the women’s prison and toward using rescue dogs in the future. HOW YOU CAN HELP Do you like to play with puppies and dogs? Then you’d be a perfect volunteer! You can volunteer to be a puppy raiser 8-16 weeks of age, or you can enroll in the weekend furlough program to assist in socializing a dog that is in training. There are also support volunteer opportunities like bookkeeping and intermittent special skill needs.

A Vintage Affair WHAT THEY DO Looking to combine your love of great wine and giving back? Look no further than A Vintage Affair, the three-night event series that culminates in the Main Event located in Liberty Hall at The Factory each April. A Vintage Affair focuses on raising awareness and resources for women and children in need. HOW YOU CAN HELP Missed your chance this April? Boating Tips for Safe Fun in the Sun

ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA 44

Franklin Lifestyle | July 2019

THE WARM WEATHER IS FINALLY HERE, AND WITH IT COMES MORE TIME SPENT ON THE WATER. For boaters, in particular, warmer temperatures and sunny skies mean more opportunities to bring family and friends along for the ride. Before inviting loved ones onto your boat, however, it’s important to review some safety procedures to help ensure a relaxing experience for everyone. WATCH THE WEATHER Summer weather can get ugly in an instant, and a boat can be a dangerous place to get caught in a storm. Before hitting the water, check the weather forecast and make note of any chance of precipitation or storms. BOAT MAINTENANCE A well-maintained engine is key to enjoying your time on the water. So be sure to check your oil levels before heading out on the water, or invest in an engine that doesn’t require oil changes. LIFE JACKET REQUIRED Although warmer weather may make swimming irresistible, safety still comes first. It’s important to always wear a life jacket while in the water and to have access to one while in the boat. According to a 2014 study by the United States Coast Guard, 84% of victims who drowned during a boating accident were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. While they may seem like a hassle, life jackets really do save lives. DON’T DRINK AND BOAT An ice-cold beverage and boating can go hand in hand. However, just as with driving a car, it is illegal to operate a boat while intoxicated across the United States. In fact, being intoxicated on the water can be even more dangerous than being intoxicated on land. Unsteady footing, sun, wind and even engine noises accelerate a drinker’s impairment. So before your next outing, make sure you, your boat and your passengers are all ready to go—and enjoy the ride!
