We are fortunate to have a culturally rich community that is as diverse as it is generous. There are many artists living among us, a few of whom we highlight in this issue. Historians believed the Ancient Egyptians mined this green gem from the Red Sea island called Topazios, known today as St John’s Island or Zabargad, an ancient source of Topaz. Confused during medieval times with emerald it is also believed the famous emeralds of Cleopatra’s collection might have actually been peridot, with peridot mining on Topazios beginning around 300BC. Peridot “THE GEM OF THE SUN”
A
stone for strength and regeneration, the Ancient Egyptians felt the glowing energy of peridot naming this vivid green beauty the ‘gem of the sun’. Associated with light it was believed that it protected its owner by warding off evil spirits that lurk in the darkness.
Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine, a mineral that forms deep in the earth’s mantle (thousands of km deep) and carried to the surface in lava during volcanic activity. The colour of peridot is determined by the varying amounts of magnesium and iron in its composition and colours can vary from a golden yellow, vivid lime green through to a dark olive/brown. The highest grade of peridot is said to be a pure grass green but most commercially available peridot has a yellowish hue. Not only a gemstone discovered on earth, peridot crystals are also found in extremely rare stony-iron meteorites called pallasites. These meteorites have formed in outer space over millions of years and

collided with earth tens of thousands of years ago. The peridot crystals lie within a metallic iron matrix and when sliced the delicate yellowy-green gems can be seen. Due to peridot’s high iron and magnesium content it is thought that pallasite meteorites are also formed within the mantle of asteroids and exposure to high temperatures would have allowed the mineral constituents within to recrystallize forming the peridot crystals. Peridot is also very dense, crystallising at extremely high temperatures compared to other minerals, another factor to consider whilst imagining crystals surviving a meteoric impact! SDRVC RECEIVES GRANTS FOR RIVER PATH DEL MAR EXTENSION

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDRVC) has been awarded two grants to fund the studies needed to move forward with the design and planning of the River Path Del Mar Phase 3 Extension Project, the final segment of the path. REI and The Malk Nature Fund each have granted the SDRVC $15,000 to cover the estimated $30,000 cost of completing the topographical and right-of-way mapping and biological studies. Morhous gives her artwork idiomatic titles like “Don’t kill the goose!” and “3 second rule” which prompt viewers to seek metaphorical interpretations to these works.
