Spread Good Cheer AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as I can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Cross Timbers Lifestyle for 2018! It seems like just yesterday I was sitting down to write the January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. For that reason, I encourage myself and each of you to tap on the brakes so we can slow down and enjoy the magic of the season. You can start by propping up your feet with a warm cup of cocoa and diving into our December issue. We’ve uncovered some terrific local gift ideas for the special folks in your life and can even help you plot out your next winter vacation getaway. Time to plan that special dinner for two, in charge of girls' gift exchange or need to impress the relatives with dinner out? We have so many fantastic local places to choose from, you can’t go wrong. But if you really need to up the ante, take a peek at what the fabulous J2 Steakhouse in Old Town Lewisville is offering up this season. It won’t disappoint. We’ve also included some ideas for an easy, elegant New Year’s Eve at home. I hope you will enjoy making new memories and celebrating long-held traditions this season. Make this season what you want it to be, but most of all give thanks

WINTER WONDERLAND FLOWER MOUND FAMILY'S COLORADO CHALET IS A MAGICAL, SNOWY ESCAPE

ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY MARLENE ROGERS

16

Cross Timbers Lifestyle | December 2018

FOR THE ROGERS FAMILY OF FLOWER MOUND, THE BEST MEMORIES ARE MADE ON THE SLOPES. Marlene, Kyle and their two sons, Dylan, 24, and Davis, 21, have been enjoying winter sports together for years. “It’s one of the few sports we can do together as a family,” says Marlene, adding that her sons learned to snowboard when they were just in elementary school. The family’s longtime love of skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling ultimately inspired them to purchase a vacation home in Colorado. “We looked at many places in Colorado but ultimately narrowed our focus to Breckenridge because it had everything you would expect from a world-class resort while retaining the charm of a historic, real mountain town,” Marlene says. “Breckenridge is high in the Rocky Mountains and has a very large ski resort with five different peaks and 2,900 acres of skiable terrain. There are a lot of restaurants, bars and places to shop too.” Marlene says her family enjoys visiting Breckenridge all throughout the year. “It is beautiful in all the seasons,” she says, adding that there are festivals and festivities throughout the year. “There is a lot to do, and we still have not done it all!” The Rogers’ home is south of town and boasts views of nearby Red and Baldy Mountains. “We love the location!” Marlene says. “It has incredible views of nearby mountains and massive spruce trees blanketed with snow. We have a lot of wildlife, including moose, foxes, an assortment of birds and the occasional black bear.” The modern, open-concept home has three stories and sleeps as many as nine people. Upstairs boasts a large, open loft with two full-size beds. The main floor houses the kitchen, living and dining areas, as well as the master bedroom and spa-like master bathroom. A comfortable lounging area, bunk room, bathroom and laundry facilities comprise the lower level. “The most unique aspect of the chalet is that each of the three levels provides the opportunity to gather as a group, but also provides privacy and solitude when one prefers that,” Marlene says. And, she says, the views are beyond compare. “The chalet is located in a snowy wonderland that is absolutely magical,” Marlene says. “I can think of nothing that is more peaceful than sitting by the fire stove day or night and watching the snowfall.” For more information about the Rogers’ chic mountain chalet or to make reservations, visit Facebook.com/BreckNridge or VRBO.com/460871.

(CON TI N U ED)

MAIN-LEVEL LIVING The main-level living area has stylish dark slate floors, log walls and neutral, modern furnishings that let the views take center stage. “It is the hub for all,” Marlene says. It also provides access to the deck, where guests can enjoy the views.

KITCHEN The modern, open kitchen has stainless steel appliances, a gas stove, butcher’s block countertops and open shelves for dishes and glassware.

MASTER BEDROOM The main-floor master bedroom blends rustic and contemporary styles with its log walls, dark beams and chic, modern bed linens.

DOWNSTAIRS LOUNGE AND BUNK ROOM “Downstairs there is a large L-shaped sectional sofa that is the perfect lounging area for watching sports or enjoying a movie night,” Marlene says. A stove-pipe heater keeps the room warm and cozy. Off the lounge area is a bunk room perfect for children. 18

Holiday Hot Spot J2 STEAKHOUSE OFFERS FINE DINING IN HISTORIC SETTING ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS FRITCHIE

STEPPING INTO J2 STEAKHOUSE IN DOWNTOWN LEWISVILLE IS LIKE STEPPING BACK TIME. That’s because the upscale steakhouse resides in one of the most historic buildings in the city: the old Lewisville Feed Mill. “It’s a Lewisville icon,” says J2 Steakhouse owner Jim Murray. “I used to buy hay there. It’s kind of a Lewisville landmark that we’ve restored.” Instead of providing feed for livestock, the carefully restored mill now serves elevated cuisine to those with a more discerning palate. 26

W I N T E R’ S REVEL YOUR GUIDE TO A SIMPLE AND STYLIZED NEW YEAR’S SOIRÉE ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

Cross Timbers Lifestyle | December 2018

FOLLOWING CLOSELY ON THE COATTAILS OF AUTUMNAL AND WINTER HOLIDAYS, THE CELEBRATION OF THE NEW YEAR CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED DUE TO AN UNDERSTANDABLE DESIRE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE SEASON. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for both new experiences and a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of

the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-the-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.

THE DRI NK S

Champagne has long been a traditional drink to toast to the new year. Keep it simple but step up your game with your own DIY Champagne cocktail bar. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.

THE DECO R There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

THE SNACKS

Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation. WHAT YOU NEED + Cheese board or serving plate + Assortment of cheeses (We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere) PUTTING IT TOGETHER Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Add any additional bites you’d like and enjoy!
