Dana Lapinel | dana.lapinel@lifestylepubs.com AREA DIRECTOR

Time is on our side! IN LOOKING BACK AT THE YEAR THAT WAS, THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FOR OUR FAMILY IN 2018 WAS CHERISHING THE MOMENT. Whether it is demands from our career, social groups, hobbies, kids activities, or a combination of all the above, we all are susceptible to being completely sucked dry of our time. This year was a reality check for Kate and I, as we succumbed to the realization that life is never going to slow down. The good news, we’ve found, is that we all have the power to allocate our time, if we truly draw some boundaries. As habitual time management failures, the first thing we did in early 2018 was declare Thursday night as our “Date Night”, and Friday night’s as “Family Fun Night”. Whatever happened on Monday through Wednesday happened, but in the midst of life’s storms, we knew that we always had one night that was blocked for just the two of us, and another night that was always blocked for the family. This was certainly an exercise in self control, as there were many things that we otherwise would have not wanted to miss out on. Setting these boundaries up, and being open about them, has been therapeutic on many different levels. Let’s be real, if your kids are over the age of twelve, hanging with their parents on Friday night may sound more like a punishment than something to look forward to. Whatever it is that you and your spouse, or family enjoys doing together, I would encourage you to take a leap and not let anything stand in the way of making it happen.

We are truly honored to be a part of this community, and wish everyone a happy holiday season, making memories with your loved ones.

POM-POMS

with Poppy & Co.

RENOVATE & REFINE

22

HI! My name is Kelsey, and I am the face behind Poppy & Co. A wedding and family lifestyle photographer and frequent contributor over here at Boulder Lifestyle and Cherry Creek Lifestyle. My photos are accented with lots of excitement, laughs and most importantly, color! I most likely will not show up wearing black to your wedding or photo shoot, but probably will be wearing a pom-pom or two. Especially my pom-pom earrings made by yours truly! Here's how to use these playful little puffs to

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | December 2018

add some excitement to your holiday season, decor and dress!

Pom-Poms 1. Collect your materials: All you will need is yarn and scissors! Additionally, I used baker’s twine for the gift wrap and the earrings. You will also need super glue or a hot glue gun, pliers, fish hook earring pieces and eye pins. 2. To begin making your pom-poms, start by wrapping the yarn. For bigger pom-poms, like for the garland, you will wrap around your knuckles, and for smaller pom-poms used for the earrings, you will wrap around two fingers. So when you choose your desired size, start wrapping! And keep wrapping! 3. When you are finished wrapping the yarn, pull the yarn gently off of your hand and tie another piece of yarn as tight as the string will go around the middle of the yarn ball. 4. Now, take the scissors and cut each of the yarn loops. 5. When you have all of the loops cut, trim down your pom-pom to your desired length.

Garland The garland is the simplest to make from beginning to end and adds a festive touch to your holiday decor.

Pom-Poms | Step 2

Pom-Poms | Step 3

Pom-Poms | Step 4

Pom-Poms | Step 5

1. Measure out how long you would like your garland and cut an extra piece of yarn to that length. 2. Take each pom-pom and string the long piece of yarn through the center of the pom-pom or through the remaining loop keeping the pom-pom together. You will need about 15-20, but really it just depends on how long you want your garland. 3. String all the pom-poms onto the long string of yarn until your garland is complete! Find the perfect spot, hang and enjoy!

Gift Bows

Another simple pom-pom idea is to make gift decorations for your presents this year! 1. Make however many pom-poms you see fit (I used six varying sizes and colors). 2. Measure out the size of baker’s twine or another piece of yarn to the length needed to wrap around your gift. 3. String the pom-poms onto the twine or yarn, just like you did for the garland. 4. Tie the twine in a knot securing the pom-poms together on the string. This also allows you to play with how the collection of pom-poms sits together. 5. Wrap the twine and pom-poms around the gift to add a little something extra to your gift giving this season!

Pom-Pom Earrings A Poppy & Co. signature is definitely the pompom statement earrings! 1. Once you have your smaller pom-poms ready, let's make some earrings! 2. Use your pliers to connect the fish hook earring piece to the eye pin. 3. Now use either super glue or a hot glue gun to attach the pom-pom to the other end of the eye pin. Put a small dot of glue, about the size of the head of a sewing pin, and stick the pin into the center of the pom-pom.

If you're not the DIYer, no worries. Garlands and earrings are all available to purchase on, PoppyAndCo.Photography. 24

MEET TWO LOCAL HEROES FROM THE DENVER FIRE DEPARTMENT WITH A HEART TO SERVE.

ARTICLE KARA DEYOUNG | PHOTOGRAPHY LADD FORDE

38

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | December 2018

ERIC MILLER ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT BEING A FIREFIGHTER SOUNDED EXCITING. Originally from Illinois, he grew up watching his uncles fight fires in Chicago and Austin. “I always idolized them,” Miller says. “Riding along in Chicago, zooming past cars and people waving as we drove to the next call of uncertainty… there was so much excitement and a feeling of being part of making a bad situation better. I was hooked from a young age.” That impression stuck with him: Today, Miller lives out his dream as a Technician for the Denver Fire Department. “My responsibilities include everything from doing inventory and gear inspections, to running calls and training others,” Miller says. “I love being the person people can count on to make a situation better. I train and live to put others before myself.” While his selfless attitude and passion for serving others led Miller to firefighting, he credits his profession for making him a more compassionate and caring person. “As a firefighter, you see people at their worst moments, their worst days,” he reflects. “By becoming a part of their lives, you learn about their stories. I’ve learned you don’t judge a book by its cover, and you don’t assume people’s stories. 90% of the time you’re wrong. Have understanding, have

an open mind and listen to people.”

FIRST RESPONDERS

(CON TI N U ED)

Denver Fire Department Captain Michael Pavlich is a busy man. Besides multiple trainings and equipment checks a day, including special operations like Hazardous Material, Rope and Dive Rescue trainings, his fire engine responds to anywhere from 15 to 20 incidents per 24-hour shift. While to many of us that would sound exhausting, the Colorado native wouldn’t have it any other way. “We’re busy from the time we get in, to when we leave in the morning, but I love being able to help people every day,” Pavlich says, explaining that being able to help people so tangibly is one of the main reasons he was inspired to become a firefighter. Pavlich credits the team at the Denver Fire Department for fostering an atmosphere of service, saying that their talent, dedication and care for those in need are what makes his job so great. “We help anyone in need, from a civilian who has a flat tire to a medical call where someone could be having a heart attack. And of course, we respond to house fires, sometimes with people trapped inside—and we go in despite the dangers involved,” explains Pavlich. For the captain, that kind of above-and-beyond approach to service reaches far beyond rescue calls. Because of his considerable leadership skills, the crew at the Denver Fire Department can train at the highest level, ready and able to serve at a moment’s notice. It’s hard to imagine juggling such responsibility, but Pavlich insists his role at the department is an “amazing blessing.” Pavlich adds humbly, “This is a very challenging position, but it is incredibly rewarding.”

HOW TO BUILD THE PERFECT

CHARCUTERIE BOARD ARTICLE BILL MINER | PHOTOGRAPHY BRITTNI BELL WARSHAW

A CHARCUTERIE BOARD IS KEY TO EVERY GOOD HOLIDAY GATHERING. It may be considered an appetizer—but for many of us—it's the main event. Chef and Owner Bill Minder of Il Porcellino Salumi gave us the ins and outs to creating a grade A board full of flavor, fun profiles and fatty goodness.

PRO TIPS + Consider a balance of flavor profiles and textures and then complement with accouterments and other items that will bring out the natural flavors in the meats. Platters should include 3–6 different items to ensure a good balance. + Don’t be afraid of fat! One of the things that makes charcuterie so appealing is the high-fat content which creates a buttery, creamy texture different from eating a sausage or a pork chop–the fat is natural and isn’t unhealthy. + When you’re planning a spread for a group of people, you’ll want to stick to these basic principles but also think about who you are serving. If your group is a bit more traditional and inexperienced with cured meats, I suggest incorporating more familiar items like summer sausage or a Lonza, which is similar to a Prosciutto. If your feeding more adventurous foodies, you can incorporate a Terrine Head Cheese or Pâté, both of which will add unique rich flavors to your board. + When thinking about serving the board, I like to make sure to include plenty of bread and crackers, a good whole grain mustard, and some pickled veggies—the acidity and saltiness is an excellent complement to the rich flavors and fats in the meats. 44

PARTING THOUGHTS

C O N T R IB U T O R S ILLUSTRATIONS ERIN HOLBERG

TO REFLECT ON A NEW YEAR, WE ASKED OUR TEAM WHAT THEIR FOCUS WORD WILL BE FOR 2019. LADD FORDE Photographer

PROGRESS

My focus word for 2019 is progress. To not only progress in everyday life but also progress with my photography and business. I'd like to challenge myself by continuing to create better images and grow to work with new people under new realms.

BEN WIESE Writer

ENDURE

Enduring can be difficult. It is occasionally all that can be done to get from one moment in life to the next. Life has little pity, even if you and I think it should have more. But don’t let the world, or anything, or anyone rob you of your ability to endure. Remember, if feeling gobsmacked by life, it’s because you have already endured many things in life and still found a way to exist.

GREY GRIMM

COMPASSION

CARRIE DAVIDSON Writer

EMPATHY

I think everyone could—and should— work on being a little more empathetic this upcoming year, especially in our country.

54

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | December 2018

Compassion has become the lost word of past generations and administrations. We have traded this fellow-feeling, empathy for thy neighbor and thyself, for the placeholders of hate, fear and the newly adopted rhetoric that all men are not created equal. Compassion is my mantra moving forward; for myself, my work, my fellow man, near and far, and for the hopeful glimpse that what is yet to come far outweighs what we have not yet shed from our collective past and present—strength in warmth, mercy and tenderness.

CHANTEL ELLERINGTON Director of Client Relations at Boulder Lifestyle & Cherry Creek Lifestyle

GRACE

Grace rises above a situation, pride, a misunderstanding, our feelings, or a situation that had a different ending then we would have preferred. I choose grace for 2019 because the Lord has shown me countlessly, that with grace, I am made whole, I can forgive immediately, I can see more clearly, and accept, that every person, every circumstance, has a purpose in my story.
