SALAD THROW-DOWN WINNERS MAKING RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE A HOME A GARDEN PARTY FOR GOOD

Editor’s Letter

Hello, summer.

JULY 2015

E

very summer for the last few years, I’ve made a summer playlist that I listen to at the beach, while I work on this magazine, during runs in the wood or over tall cold pink drinks on the porch with friends.

These songs are old favorites like “Summertime,” by Will Smith and a more classic rendition of the same title by the amazing jazz vocalist, Eddie Jefferson. The list always includes a new title I just discovered (usually introduced by adorable friends), like “So Long Sweet Misery” by Brett Dennen, “Summer of a Heart” by Francois & The Atlas Mountains or Jessie J’s acoustic cover of “Rock With You.” It’s undoubtedly a mishmash compilation of genres, representing the many moods of Robert Lowe and Kerry Dyer summer (hey, that sounds like a song I know). share signature cocktails from their Mandarin Oriental menu with the editor. Back Porch Iced Tea, Georgia Peach and the Whiskey Bramble

Two summers ago, I burned CDs of my playlist and gave them to my pals, a mix tape of friendship, summer love (for my paddle board, Lake Michigan and family) and happy-go-luckiness.

My dear, long-time friend Robin teaches dance at the University of Wisconsin and emailed me in the thick of winter that she had used the CD during a class and it made her think of our summer days sailing together. BOOM. I see Sally (who teaches elementary school in Annapolis) every July at the lake and she messaged me a few months ago to say she listens to the CD in her car on particularly dreary commutes. Perfect. Ode to the power of the summer songs.

SKINCARE FROM WITHIN A new skincare company, BeBe & Bella Essence, LLC, announced its launch of a line of anti-aging products based on a unique probiotic and fission yeast technology. The new skincare line initially features eight products, including two oral probiotic supplements, which together maximize the benefits of this amazing technology. BeBe & Bella Essence was founded in 2013 by three Atlanta women—Rose Krebs and her daughters, Linda Krebs and Allison Krebs-Bensch. The secret behind BeBella's powerful anti-aging properties lies in the combination of nutrient-rich extracts harvested from fermentation of the probiotic Lactobacillus casei and fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The benefits of oral probiotic supplements for digestive health is now well established and there is emerging evidence that balanced intestinal microflora improve the skin quality and even brain function. But research continues to uncover the full potential of probiotics. The name BeBe & Bella Essence was inspired by Allison's daughters' names—BeBe and Isabella—and the combination of their names mean "be beautiful." MyBeBella.com.

SYREN SHOOTING & SPA PACKAGE Heed the call of the Syren shotgun for a shooting and spa package offering a perfect pairing of adventure and relaxation at

Barnsley Resort. With the two-night Syren Shooting & Spa Package, guests receive a shooting lesson at the clays course at SpringBank Sporting Club, including 50 targets per person and rental of the Syren shotgun, designed specifically for women by the experts at Caesar Guerini and Fabarm. After the shoot, relax with a $100 spa credit per person for The Spa at Barnsley Resort. While the credit may be used for any treatment, therapists recommend the deep forest detox body treatment or herbal compression massage to focus on relaxing muscles engaged in shooting. The Syren Shooting & Spa Package also includes breakfast for two in The Woodlands Grill daily and luxurious overnight accommodations. According to a National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) report, there has been a huge increase of women hunters since 2001 (9%) and a massive increase of target shooters (60%). The Syren shotgun is a new “designed for ladies” gun from Caesar Guerini and Fabarm. They are one of the few locations to offer the Syrens in rental inventory, so ladies can test it out while they’re shooting, and also don’t have to have the added weight/length of a shotgun that is really designed for men. Your Neighbor Rendering of the new Peachtree Dunwoody Ronald McDonald House

Home Sweet Ronald McDonald House ATLANTANS MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR FAMILIES WITH ILL AND INJURED CHILDREN ARTICLE BRINA POTVIN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

arcia and Howard Rohan have been residents of Brookhaven for more than 35 years. They have three children and live in a blossoming neighborhood. But when their 18-year-old son Jason was in a head-on car accident in 1990, their lives changed forever. “One moment the world is one way, the way it’s supposed to be, and the next moment your life is turned upside down,” Marcia says. “Although the accident happened 25 years ago and Jason is doing well today, the emotion of it never completely fades. It’s raw, real and I can bring myself right back to that night." Jason was the third child in the Rohan’s neighborhood to suffer from a brain injury during a span of nine months. Their community was shaken, but the Rohan’s were overwhelmed with how supportive their community remained. “The two other families encouraged and uplifted us during our experience and we were able to do the same for them,” describes Marcia. “Because of the impact our support system had on us, we wanted to do the same for others.” Not long after Jason’s accident, the Rohan’s fulfilled their promise to help others by becoming volunteers at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House on Peachtree Dunwoody Road near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. The Peachtree Dunwoody location is one of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities’ (ARMHC) two Houses that provide accommodations and support services for families with ill and injured children. Since the Rohan’s first volunteered in 2004, their story has become a beacon of hope at the House. They empathize with the families and understand that words like cancer, accident, or transplant are words

12

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2015

that change a child’s life as well as the lives of the entire family. “My own family’s experience has helped me remember that bad days happen but it makes the victories all the more meaningful,” Marcia says. “We love being able to laugh, cry, and celebrate with the families at ARMHC. It’s a safe haven for them to be exactly where they are, deal with their circumstances in the ways that feel most natural to them, but most importantly, to be together.” The day that Marcia and Howard first walked into the Ronald McDonald House, they knew it was where they were meant to serve. Today, they can be found making a meal for the families and sharing the joys of being a volunteer. Although the families at the Houses are experiencing devastating circumstances, they are encouraged and uplifted by volunteers like Marcia and Howard. When Marcia encourages others to volunteer for one of the Houses, she tells them, “It’s a happy place.” Volunteers are the heartbeat of the House. They help support worried parents so they can focus on what matters most, the health of their child. Currently, ARMHC needs individual or group volunteers to prepare meals or host activities for the families. There are also many wish-list items and registry needs to help furnish and stock the new Peachtree Dunwoody House, which is on track to open to families late this year. For too long, limited capacity at the former 11-bedroom House on Peachtree Dunwoody Road forced ARMHC to turn away many families who were counting on a "home away from home" during a critical time in their lives. With the generous support of the local

Atlanta community and beyond, an $18.5 million capital campaign was completed to fundraise and build a new House that will serve thousands more families for decades to come. It will feature 31 guest rooms with private baths, full ADA accessibility, a sustainable design built to LEED standards, a kitchen with dining areas and an innovative, indoor tree house to aid in healing through play. “This new House will dramatically increase our impact and nearly triple our capacity to provide a welcoming home for families whose children are battling life threatening medical conditions,” says Beth Howell, president and CEO of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. “The quality of healthcare in Atlanta will improve as thousands more families in crisis will have a place to stay together and heal together.” When completed, the new Peachtree Dunwoody Ronald McDonald House will empower families and children for successful outcomes by addressing their unique needs and sustaining them in the midst of difficult circumstances. For more information on volunteering at the Peachtree Dunwoody House, please contact Volunteer Services Manager, Cat Lewis, at catherine.lewis@armhc.org. To contribute items that will help make this new House a “home” to the families it serves, visit ARMCH.org

30 Years of Tradition PEACHTREE HEIGHTS EAST GARDEN PARTY ARTICLE RUKSANA HUSSAIN

E

very first Sunday in May, for the past 30 years, there has been a party at the garden in Buckhead’s Duck Pond Park. Organized by the Ladies of the Lake, the garden club of Peachtree Heights East, the Garden Party is an adults-only event where spring is celebrated on the peninsula of the Duck Pond, amid the beautiful blooming trees and flowers. A treasured neighborhood tradition since 1985, this afternoon celebration is open to the public, residents and friends of neighboring communities. Festive garden party attire abounds replete with hats and bowties. The Ladies of the Lake Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that is a voluntary association of individuals drawn from the Ladies of the Lake Garden Club membership within the Peachtree Heights East neighborhood of Atlanta. The Foundation’s mission is to protect, nurture and nourish the uniqueness of the in-town area while preserving the beauty and quality of the natural resources available so that all may enjoy a positive quality of life both now and in perpetuity. Grants are available from the Ladies of the Lake Foundation to support efforts to strengthen in-town neighborhoods. A little over 100 members belong to the Ladies of the Lake Garden Club now. The original two members, dubbed the "ladies of the lake," would gather at the Duck Pond with their children in the 1940s and help maintain the park. The Ladies of the Lake Garden Club originally dates back to the 1930s, when the women of Peachtree Heights East first banded together to help tend to the upkeep of the Duck Pond Park. In an effort to brainstorm new fundraising ideas, four members of the organization founded the Garden Party, as it is known today. The first Ladies of the Lake Garden Party was organized and held in 1985. Original founders were Ali Barr, Ashlyn Dugan, Angela Cassidy and Jane Hill (the latter two women continue to live in Peachtree Heights East). The inaugural party was attended by about 75 guests, and featured live chamber music, food donated by local restaurants, an open bar, and a silent auction. Tickets were $10 and proceeds net-

ted a little over $2,000. Famed Atlanta comedian Jerry Farber was the first emcee for the party and continued to entertain guests at the Garden Party well into its third year. New to the Garden Party this year were Soiree Catering and Events, owned by Peachtree Heights East resident and chef Mary Hataway, who provided scrumptious Southern gourmet delights. The annual waterside event features a fantastic silent auction, with items ranging from trips and private parties to restaurant certificates and items for the home. It includes a popular wine auction, with wines paired and grouped to delight the most discerning connoisseur. Under the graceful branches of the peninsula’s weeping willow trees, guests are serenaded with delightful, live music. “We plan to continue to grow the organization in size, and continue to volunteer in support of raising much needed funds for the Duck Pond's maintenance and upkeep,” shares member Mary Chris Murry. “The Garden Club will always remain an integral part of the neighborhood as it continues to tie the neighborhood together socially and engage its members. This neighborhood and the Duck Pond is dear to everyone that lives here, and the Ladies of the Lake are an important part of that bond.” The Duck Pond Park is one of the most serene, natural environments in Atlanta. Set on nearly seven and a half acres of green space and rolling terrain, the park was created over a century ago as the heart of the Peachtree Heights East neighborhood. Neighborhood developer E. Rivers’ widow deeded the park to the residents of Peachtree Heights East for their use in perpetuity. The Park is supported by residents’ dues, contributions from neighbors, and through fundraising efforts like the Garden Party. Each year, the Ladies of the Lake Garden Club contributes a portion of the proceeds from its Garden Party to Peachtree Heights East Neighborhood Association to help fund the monthly maintenance of the Duck Pond Park. Over the past 30 years, cumulative contributions have amounted to over $225,000.

e did it again. Following in the fork prints of past throw-downs (remember the mac ‘n cheese challenge? the summer cocktail sip-off? the holiday sweets shoot out?), we asked a few choice restaurant chefs, home delivery chefs and event catering chefs to head to the nearest garden and toss up a fabulous fresh summer salad for this issue. We readied our forks at the gorgeous Mandarin Oriental, in the Taipan Lounge overlooking the picturesque English Garden. Our talented photographer, Kathryn McCrary tiptoed between the early summer raindrops to shoot the salads in the English Garden, tucked away behind busy Peachtree St. in Buckhead. Get inspired and find the closest farmers market to enjoy the season’s freshest produce for one of these fabulous salads.

SUMMER VEGGIE SALAD WITH SLOW SMOKED CHICKEN OUR BLUE RIBBON FAVORITE CHEF MAX MILLER

Citrus vinaigrette: lemon and lime juice, dijon mustard, local organic honey, EV olive oil, salt and pepper (produce courtesy of Love is Love Farm). Deviled quail eggs with black truffle oil. What the judges said: The tiny deviled quail eggs were a jewel, the beets changed my mind about beet appreciation/loved them, sunflower seeds added another excellent layer of texture and taste. Get one: Everbest loves the Paleo way of life. Meals are prepared fresh, never frozen, and contain local and organic meats and vegetables when they are available. This upscale Buckhead eatery pairs mouth-watering bites like the wild mushroom flatbread, cheesesteak eggrolls and the ahi tuna tacos with a long list of impressive mixed drinks. With delicious food, chic furniture and knowledgeable servers aimed to please, Del Friscos’ patio is a must try this summer.

NOCHE BROOKHAVEN

705 Town Blvd H2SR.Com/Noche_Brookhaven Grab a few friends and head over to Noche in Town Brookhaven Shopping Center. Known for their tasty tapas and specialty margaritas, Noche is always a fun place to dine, but when the weather warms up the patio turns into the perfect weekend and late night hangout. Grab a seat on the patio and order small bites like the paella fritters, chicken empanada, or the chipotle mango barbecue salmon and sit back and relax as you watch the busy shoppers go by.

SMOKEBELLY BBQ

128 E Andrews Dr. NW SmokeBellyBBQ.com Calling all barbecue lovers! Looking for the perfect patio to impress friends and family, great food and a wallet-friendly price point? Look no further than Smokebelly BBQ located in the bustling East Andrews District. The folks behind the brand have created an awesome backyard-themed patio that is ideal for hanging with friends, family and even business associates. Additionally, they are churning out delicious signature dishes like The Cherry Cola Baby Back Ribs and 21-hour Angus beef brisket. You can even wash it down with craft beers including the locally brewed Three Taverns Belgian IPA and Mississippi-based Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan brown ale on draught at the bar for a true southern experience.

SOUTHBOUND

5394 Peachtree Road, Chamblee BaconSnobs.com Tucked away in a cozy corner of Chamblee is a gem of a restaurant serving inventive cocktails and delectable fare. Creating mouthwatering dishes such as the phenomenal wood-grilled cauliflower and grilled salmon over spring peas, Southbound is quickly becoming a favorite neighborhood spot for locals and a destination for mixology at its best. Sprawling out from the main dining area is a quaint outdoor seating area, making it the perfect setting for sharing cocktails and great conversation.

KING+DUKE

3060 Peachtree Rd NW KindAndDukeAtl.com What more can we say about the patio at King + Duke? It is al fresco dining at the top of the game. Mastermind Ford Fry and his crew have made outdoor dining more than just a meal; it’s a true experience! Make a reservation and upon arrival, examine the menu to find upscale comfort food dishes to suit every palate. The pimento cheese hushpuppies, double stack burger, and the Connecticut lobster roll will not disappoint. Not only is this one of the best outdoor places to take a date, it’s great for special occasions as well. Just show up and let the ambience do the rest.

GYPSY KITCHEN

3035 Peachtree Rd NE GypsyKitchenAtl.com One of Buckhead’s newest hot spots and energetic patios is the Spanish-inspired Gypsy Kitchen located in the revamped shopping district along Peachtree Road. Gypsy Kitchen has masterfully fused the flavors birthed by Spain and Morocco, resulting in savory small plates perfect for individual satisfaction or sharing. Pair any dish with wine from their curated list or order a house cocktail like the Spice Trader made with bourbon, cayenne pepper, apricot liqueur, and ginger beer; or the Seville Rose made with vodka, roses, spices, egg white, lemon and soda—a perfect patio sipping cocktail!

he growing legion of Mini Cooper fans and those intrigued by the hatchback’s extraordinarily muscular physique were further won over when Mini Cooper S Hardtop 4 Door was finally introduced. The Minis have always— and justly—boasted about their “go-kart” feel resulting from it nimble drive, impressive sport suspension, and a haymaker of a punch that left virtually nothing to be desired thanks to its 2.0-liter, 189 horsepower engine. Getting this Moonwalk Gray Metallic-hued model with a welcomed six-speed Getrag manual transmission (an option that is unfortunately becoming more extinct in the auto world); Sport seats; an Electronic Braking System; five-passenger seating; and three different

driving modes (Sport, Mid, and Green) as standards totaling $25,100 made us already click heels. And don’t forget the signature oversized dial centered on the console and glowing lights that subtly change colors depending on the drive modes and climate control. However, the optional, yet strongly recommended Sport ($1,250), Media, Cold Weather, Sport and Premium Packages delivered numerous enhancements including 17-inch alloys; racing stripes; keyless entry; LED fog/ headlights; enhanced Bluetooth and USB connection; a rear view camera; power folding mirrors; iDrive system; a panoramic sunroof; and optimal sound by Harman/Kardon to name a few made the drive blissful—but

at a cost. All the fixings tallied $34,350, but with BMW overlooking the engineering and technology, you get what you pay for and then some. The reasonable cargo room, longer wheelbase, stretched interior to snugly fit five adults (four very comfortably), and overall size augmentation (40.7 cubic feet) surprisingly did not compromise the invaluable driving experience Minis traditionally breed, so the “S” for sport is truly validated. Parting Thoughts

I Live Next Door to What’s-His-Name WORDS JIM COSGROVE

T

his month is our street’s annual block party. What shall we bring? Something meatless, of course. Fortunately there are other vegetarians on our street, so we don’t feel like complete odd balls. But the only way we found that out was by attending a previous block party. That’s where we found out that we have Presbyterians and Libertarians and a few septuagenarians on the block. There’s a band leader, a drama professor, a fudge maker, a former teacher-of-the-year, a cartoonist and two stay-at-home dads. It’s amazing what you can learn about your neighbors when you venture out the front door and share a meal together. Living in the suburbs, we have, by design, bought into a more private back porch culture. It’s a different world from the front porch/front stoop culture of my youth where, for better or worse, we knew our neighbors and most of their business. While visiting Mexico many years ago, I met a man who was fascinated by American culture. He said, “I hear that in the U.S. you can live next door to people for 20 years and never speak to them. Is that really true?” “Yep,” I said. “Sad, but true.” In our current back porch world, if you play it right, you could leave your home in the morning, get into your car in the garage, drive to work, park in another garage and return home in the evening without having to see or talk to a neighbor. And, as a bonus,

you wouldn’t have to encounter nature either, as you’d be safely encased in a temperature-controlled environment from your bedroom to your cubicle, while traveling on paved surfaces. A person could go months or years without actually touching the earth. This is fascinating and mind-blowing all at once. But the block party gives us an excuse to be civil humans. And we all know that everyone else has plastered on their smiles and is thinking the same things, like “I’m supposed to know you, but I can’t remember your name.” Thank goodness our neighbor Bob (who organizes the shindig every year) provides nametags, because it’s hard to remember these folks you only see once a year. Now I’m not condoning alcohol as a sure-fire way to goose things up, but a few years ago we brought beer to share – the first time anyone had dared such a thing! What happened next was like the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Pretty soon bottles seemed to appear from nowhere. People stayed later that year than they had ever stayed before. When we cleaned up, there were far more bottles than the six we brought. And even if the conversations hover around the mundane – who moved in and who moved out to the latest remodeling project to what so-and-so is doing to keep the rabbits out of her hostas – just bear with it, because you not only might learn something, you just might enjoy yourself.
