Stale Stuffing, Tainted Turkeys and other Thanksgiving Disasters

NOVEMBER 2016 PUBLISHER

Donald Hawkins | Donald.Hawkins@LifestylePubs.com EDITOR

I

think it’s safe to say that we’ve all experienced Thanksgiving Feasts that have gone awry. Many years ago it was my cousin’s turn to host and the evening could not have been more beautiful. When it was time to be seated, she beamed with pride as she carried an expertly prepared golden-brown bird into her dining room – and dropped it on the floor. There were gasps, followed by sympathetic reassurances that everything would be all right. Fortunately she had several Tombstone pizzas in the freezer and the meal went on with minimal delay. (Postscript: The following year she sent invitations to The Second Annual Turkey Drop Dinner.) When it comes to Thanksgiving meals, I think most people have one item that they avoid. For me, that item is stuffing. One year it was so stale that I could barely muster an obligatory bite. But as I politely scattered the remnants about my plate, I noticed the ingredients included tiny bits of burger. I thought, “Why didn’t they just stuff this thing with White Castles?” And that was the inspiration for my White Castle Stuffing. Whenever I roast a turkey, I stuff it with sliders, accentuated with a little sage or poultry seasoning. And lots of diced hamburger dill pickles. (Chef ’s Note: The buns don’t hold up well to the heat. So stuff a few extras in there. Or some croutons.) Recently I met Gigi Spires, a Williamson County realtor who experienced an epic Thanksgiving disaster. I’ll let her explain: “I took the turkey out of the oven and put it on a platter, proudly carrying it into the dining room. We started to carve it and realized there was a problem. The turkey was raw! We carved it and threw it into the microwave to try to salvage it. But it was terrible and like rubber. “There were about 10 of us there and it was my first time to host the holiday. And the last for awhile. I was embarrassed but we did have a good laugh. My mom took the blame as she had told me to cook it super low all night. But she forgot to tell me to turn the oven up in the morning.” Oops. Later, Gigi sent a letter to a producer at Food Network that led to an appearance on Dear Food Network: Thanksgiving Day Disasters where she prepped and roasted turkey breasts with celebrity chef Guy Fieri in his backyard. If there’s a moral to the story it’s this: If your Thanksgiving Feast fails, embrace it with a healthy dose of humor. And keep a stash of frozen pizzas on hand. Just in case.

TRACTOR SUPPLY COMPANY ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF PETSENSE RETAIL CHAIN Tractor Supply Company (TSC), the nation’s largest rural lifestyle retail store chain, recently announced the acquisition of Petsense, LLC, a leading specialty retailer of pet supplies and services with 136 stores in 25 states. The cash transaction price was approximately $116 million. T

he first phase of the long-awaited Hill Center Brentwood is opening in November. For those who live and work in Brentwood and have watched the 17-acre mixed-use development come together piece by piece over the last year, it’s exciting to have a town center come to life. Prominent Nashville developer H.G. Hill Realty Company is bringing Hill Center to Brentwood and the location at the intersection of Franklin Road and Maryland Way couldn’t be better. Strategically placed in the heart of the retail and business district, adjacent to Maryland Farms and CityPark, the goal is to create a more connected community. “After many years and a lot of hard word by our staff and development team, it’s quite rewarding to see our vision of a town center for Brentwood coming to fruition,” said

Chairman and CEO, Jimmy Granberry. “With our first phase 86 percent leased, we are pleased to bring a mix of national, regional and locally-owned retail and dining options, including several that are new to the Nashville-area, along with notable office tenants to Hill Center Brentwood.” The first phase will have 158,000 square feet of office space and 66,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Features will include a main street connecting Chadwick Drive to Eastpark Drive, a covered valet area, a plaza with water feature and green space, as well as a six-level, 852-space parking garage and Wi-Fi throughout the development. Once completed, Hill Center Brentwood will consist of 450,000 square feet of office space and 150,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space across 10 buildings. In fact, this will be the largest office complex built in Maryland Farms and the largest real estate project undertaken by H.G. Hill Reality Company. John Gromos, General Manager of Turner Construction’s Nashville office, describes the project: “Hill Center Brentwood is a ground-breaking project for Brentwood and one of the most significant commercial projects Turner has undertaken during our 41 years of operation in Tennessee. Like everything developed by H.G. Hill Realty, this multi-use campus of retail and office buildings will be a vibrant and welcoming place." And the convenience of a one-stop shop, work and play destination is certainly a welcome addition to Brentwood.

TO REMODEL or not TO REMODEL? Ellen | Sherwood Design can help answer the question. ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY SHATERIAN

I

t seems everybody these days is considering some sort of home improvement project. Any realtor will tell you that kitchens and baths yield the most bang for your buck, so if you’re looking to sell, these are the ideal places to start. However, maybe you’re just tackling a kitchen remodel simply to enjoy it for years to come. Whatever your inspiration, Brentwood Lifestyle talked with the folks at Ellen|Sherwood Design, a one-stop shop for kitchen and bath design, fabrication and installation, to get some expert advice about where to begin.

22

Brentwood Lifestyle | November 2016

Designer Alan Sherwood suggests hitting the Internet for ideas before taking on any home improvement project. “Houzz and Pinterest are the leading spots for generating ideas, as you can quickly look and see ideas for designs that you like,” he says. However, pictures don’t tell the entire story. There are lots of things to consider, including budget, materials and timing. Sherwood says many times people don't consider the cost of ripping or tearing out existing fixtures. “Ellen|Sherwood Design is unique in that we provide a budgetary estimate when you bring in your kitchen layout or dimensions. We include the cost to tear out and remove the old product. Tear out is often an area that you can do yourself and save some money, but it can be labor intensive.” And that’s where time factors into the equation. People who often do their own removal of old cabinets, for example,

sometimes expect to have new ones the next day. But it doesn’t work that way. Sherwood adds, “Cabinets are four weeks delivery on average. There are a couple of providers with a shorter ship date, but they are not consistent. Tile showers can take two weeks to build up the pan and apply the proper sealant. Basic tile installation takes a few days to provide dry time between each layer. Stone fabricators in the area are busy and can have a several week backlog.” Finally, once you’ve decided what you like, it is time to go shopping. Sherwood says the big box stores are a great place to start, but there are many more resources available. “The Home Depot and big box stores have a few selections of popular granite, tile, and cabinets starting at bottom dollar pricing. Tile stores will provide a wide selection and better interior design consulting support, as well as better pricing CONTINUED > and much more variety to choose from.

November 2016 | Brentwood Lifestyle

23

TO REMODEL OR NOT TO REMODEL? (CON TI N U ED)

“Cabinet specific stores have custom cabinet solutions and can generate nice drawings of your cabinet layouts. Kitchen and bath specialty stores will represent more variety and better quality than the big box stores, and they often showcase local providers for cabinets and stone countertops.” He adds, “Granite today is an affordable countertop. Today’s granite price is lower than ever, and there are many colors and finishes available. Granite fabricators work with granite yards to provide a wide range of choices at full size. Fabricators often have sample sizes but less full slabs to choose from.” Colleen Ellen, co-owner of Ellen|Sherwood Design, makes note of the new design trends the firm is seeing. “Our region is finally catching up to the rest of the nation with increased use of quartz products. Quartz gives the look of granite or marble without the imperfections that can be found with natural stone products. “Cambria quartz is a major U.S. quartz provider that just opened a new distribution center in Nashville and added Ellen|Sherwood Design as an approved fabricator. Also, leathered granite tops are very popular right now. Many of the dark colors look good but a white Casablanca leathered look is beautiful as well. “As far as tile, the wood-look is very popular as well as actual tile made from reclaimed wood. Anything arranged in chevron and herringbone patterns are hot right now as well as brick tiles that are hung vertically in straight lines instead of the typical horizontal look. “Brick shapes are still trending in anything from polished, small, large, rustic, etc. We are also seeing more and more shapes such as hexagons in all sizes.”

Owners, Colleen Ellen & Michelle Sherwood

If you’re still undecided about hiring a design firm or being a DIY-er, Sherwood suggests doing your homework. “Design firms are great because they do a lot of the leg work for you. They know the industry, who to contact, and how it is supposed to be done. They can walk through the project with you and make sure that all the work is done correctly and to everyone’s expectations. “We would recommend that they are accredited by a nationally recognized program. We also always recommend you get references to insure a positive history and repeat customers. The relationship can be key. The firm needs to be able to provide you with what you want, and provide it to the latest trends and required codes and regulations.” “My number one advice for DIY-ers is YouTube, friends and forums. Check out how it is done on YouTube and see what people are talking about in industry specific forums such as on the Stone Fabricators Association website.” Ellen adds that Ellen|Sherwood’s design philosophy is simple: to serve customers with the highest level of professional customer service, offer a large selection of the latest trends, and to provide reliable on-time delivery and skilled installation.

Top-Quality Renos by Top-Notch Talent MARK WILLIAMS OF RSU CONTRACTORS KNOWS THERE'S NO SHORT CUTS ON THE LONG ROAD TO SUCCESS. ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“H

appy employees. Happy customers. When employees and customers are happy, everyone is happy.”

This simple yet telling statement from RSU Contractors owner and

founder, Mark Williams, is indicative of the respect he has for his 40 employees and “great team of subcontractors,” and he is quick to pay it forward when it comes to the success of his business. “We’ve been able to grow so much because no one here thinks of themselves as ‘just employees,’ or that working with RSU Contractors is ‘just a job.’ Every single person at RSU understands he or she is an important part of a great team,” says Williams. Founded in 1982, RSU Contractors began as Services Unlimited, a company Williams started to make some extra money while attending Middle Tennessee State University. “I washed windows and performed various odd jobs. Pretty much any project you can think of, I did it,” he says. It was when the instructor for one of his college courses required students to develop a detailed company business plan that Williams realized what his window washing business could become. Pat Bouton joined Services Unlimited in 1984 as a house painter and, over the years, they grew the business together. Williams and Bouton acquired their Tennessee State Contractors License in 1990, changing the company name to Remodeling Services Unlimited, and later to RSU Contractors. RSU Contractors specializes in kitchens, bathrooms, whole house remodels, additions, renovations and handyman projects. And the company is particularly well known for outdoor living renovations. REMODELING THE RSU WAY

“If you want a drop-dead gorgeous sunroom, screen porch, kitchen, bathroom, basement or addition, we can deliver,” says Williams. “We’ve got it covered from simple, fancy, upscale and contemporary to old-school, big budget, small budget and everything in between. If you can dream it, we can design and build it.”

(CON TI N U ED)

Today RSU Contractors is one of the largest remodeling companies in the United States. Says Williams, “I like to think we’ve been able to grow so much is due to our insistence on quality, renowned customer service and the way we go to great lengths to remove stress from a house renovation.”

“Since 1982 we have had one simple goal: “Deliver quality work by professionals to create the most satisfying, highest-quality, complete peace-of-mind remodeling experience for our customers.”

Mark Williams

Owner, RSU Contractors Williams says that RSU Contractors consults with customers by using a detailed document database during the planning phase of the project. Then they make a “shopping list” for customers before the project begins so everyone is working from the same page. These steps, along with their "zero-stress" project management, ensure a smoother remodeling process. “We take care of our customers, employees, and vendors and maintain a focus on excellence," he says. "Simply put, we treat people with respect, take pride in our work and take a professional approach to deliver a quality job.” In other words, there are no shortcuts on the long road to success.

PACKING THE PARK FOR

Pilgrimage THOUSANDS CONVERGED ON THE PARK AT HARLINSDALE FOR THE PILGRIMAGE MUSIC & CULTURAL FESTIVAL.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NICK ZIMMER

T

he Second Annual Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival capped its twoday run on Sunday, September 25 at The Park at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin. More than 30,000 attendees turned out for 60 artists appearing over five stages, more food trucks than you could count and many local vendors who showcased their crafts throughout the weekend. The lineup featured musicians from practically every genre. The festival served as a showcase for up-and-coming artists such as Maybe April, Alyssa Bonagura, and budding superstar Kacey Musgraves; as well as world-renown headliners like Beck (Saturday) and Daryl Hall & John Oates (Sunday). Two of the standout performances came on Saturday when Kaleo (which recently relocated from Iceland to Nashville) took to the main stage followed by Grace Potter later in the day. Both artists drew large crowds that sang along to every song and shared the same enthusiasm of the performance as the artists themselves. The performers and audience were energetic throughout and did not wilt under sunny skies and temperatures that soared well into the nineties.
