Happy Summer Friends
JULY 2017
I
hope this finds you sipping sweet tea in the shade somewhere that makes you feel like a kid again. Isn’t that what summer is all about? Feeling unencumbered and inspired? I thought I’d keep it simple this month and share this recipe from a cookbook I helped edit in the 1990’s when we lived in Hong Kong. It’s a winner for BBQs and potlucks.

compliment the Farmers Market by running sales and specials during market weekends. So in the spring of 2006, the Farmers Market took root under an old oak tree in Historic Downtown Alpharetta in the city parking lot. The Farmers Market allowed the city to support local farmers and artisans. The market is open to farmers, artisans, food vendors, and purveyors of Southern produce and goods. In 2006, the Farmers Market was held bi-weekly through the fall growing season and included seasonal plants and flowers. Due to its success, in 2007 it was expanded to weekly markets, and in 2008 the time was extended. In 2009 the Market was moved to a nearby location along a closed-to-traffic portion of Old Roswell Street and Jones Avenue. In 2010, the Market moved to the big parking lot next to City Hall on Main Street. Then in 2011 a Gazebo and signage was added to mark the now permanent market location. Alpharetta Farmers Market is open to the public. Admission is free and parking is available throughout Historic Downtown Alpharetta. The market is open each Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in its current location. Buy local!

Polo in the Pines President Tina Fowler introduced The to the charity during one of her visits to the restaurant. Over time, Tina and Johanna’s ongoing conversations around the work Polo in the Pines does to help impact pediatric cancer research led Tina to invite Johanna to the hospital to meet a patient undergoing treatment. With lunch from The Capital Grille in tow, Johanna headed to the hospital for what she now calls “a life-changing experience.” Not only did Johanna leave with a new perspective on life, but also a mission for The Capital Grille. he name Chic Evolution in Art was chosen to represent the ever evolving nature of the Alpharetta gallery, which features modern
sculptures, paintings, cast glass, crafts, collectibles and sophisticated furnishings. Owner and founder Ivan Pitoni has built a local, national and international clientele over the past 15 years, while being a true ambassador of pure passion, local art and giving back along the way.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Pitoni grew up on the streets of Brazil and found an escape through sports. His volleyball skills advanced him to a professional status, bringing him to the United States 20 years ago. After settling in Atlanta, unfortunate injuries prevented Pitoni from continuing his career in sports. He began working for two prominent designers; at the time his job

THE FUTURE
to further develop Chic Evolution in Art. It was the defining moment in which he knew this was his path.
AN UNFORGOTTEN ARTIST
“The gallery is just one aspect of services we provide,” says Pitoni. “ The studio is so much more than just a painting on a wall. We provide consulting for high-end hospitality, design firms, and private clients. Our work scales from local to international. But we keep our primary

TRUE PASSION Pitoni works to feature emerging talent, with many artists being local. The site states that behind every piece of artwork, they want there to be true passion. Atlanta Braves SunTrust Park certainly provides invaluable sports memorabilia, but leaving with a content stomach could be just as unforgettable. To complement the experience of witnessing home runs, singing “Take Me Out To the Ballgame” in the seventh inning, hoping to catch a fly ball, and overall gawking at the Park’s 1,114,400-squarefoot splendor, global food service provider Delaware North Sportservice has made a valiant effort to embrace especially Atlanta’s dining scene with a plethora of Southerninspired items to choose from. The strategy has been well received by Braves fans and gourmands alike. Brilliantly acknowledging the local favorites, Delaware North has ushered in some of the best eateries Georgia’s capital has to offer, including the world-renowned burgers of Chef Linton Hopkins’ H&F; lip-smackin’ barbecue from the Fox Bros.; Gu’s Dumplings’ Asian flare at Intentional Wok; Hugh Acheson’s 1st & 3rd Hot Dog and Sausage Shack; and, of course, the classics—Chick-Fil-A and Waffle House—to name a few. And no worries, sweet teeth are 20

also recognized thanks to King of Pops, Mayfield Creamery Ice Cream, and High Road Craft Creamery’s signature Tomahawk Ice Cream Bar serving as delectable clutch hitters. Then there is the “Taste of Braves Country” program where surrounding states of Georgia collectively making up “Braves Country” get some representation. This means participating concession stands offering mouthwatering selections such as the Nashville Hot Chicken to represent Tennessee; Taco Factory’s Blackened Catfish Po’ Boy Taco honoring Mississippi; Alabama getting some love with the enormous Fried Tomahawk Pork Chop complete with collard green slaw and white barbecue sauce served on an enormous potato roll; and South Carolina loyalists certainly not balking on the Pimento Cheese Patty Melt. The dietary conscious also gets some taste bud love. Look for the “Farm to Fan” logo, an initiative featuring produce from a cooperative of more than 40 local farms and vendors; gluten-free food items including beer; and Field Of Greens’ stand offering an extensive menu of vegetarian options. Other notable specialties to strongly consider include the hand-cut fries at Potato Cutter, the Kevin Rathbun Steak Sandwich, and The Slice’s imposing “Burgerizza”— two, eight-inch pepperoni pizzas serving as the “bun” of 24 ounces of ground beef, a quarter-pound of hickory smoked bacon and six aged cheddar slices. When looking at the score sheets, Delaware North and the SunTrust Park have hit a grand slam when it comes to providing baseball fans with an unforgettable eating experience. One of my last positions was to assist the men who were coming back from the war and ready to be discharged. Part of my duties in that position included verifying the medals that they wore on their uniforms. Believe it or not, some of the fellas had on medals that they had not earned but had found or even possibly purchased. You see, certain medals meant higher pay grades so you know, some thought they could possibly fool the system but usually when I asked, they were honest and they would give up the medals. I had a bucket of medals that were never authorized and obtained who knows how. It wasn’t a large bucket but it was a fairly full bucket. That wasn’t the good part of the job but the good part was being involved in one of their happier days: the day that they got to come home.” July 2017 | AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com

ere are two automobiles—the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF and 2017 Focus RS—that are not only stellar buys, but come
with a manual transmission for the true driving experience.
Mazda MX-5 Miata 2017 MAZDA MX-5 RF
Even more sexy and powerful. Mazda’s Miata has a cult following and for good reason. Their attractive two-seaters are not only reliable, but attractive, inexpensive and simply a joy to drive. The latest edition—the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF—is loaded with options, rests on 17-inch alloy wheels, and gets 155 horses darting out of its SKYACTIV, 2.0-Liter, 4-cylinder engine. Graciously, all of this power still won’t make this two-seater constantly thirsty thanks to a combined 29 miles to the gallon. Inside, a booming BOSE nine-speaker sound system, push-button start, Bluetooth technology, leather-trimmed sport seats, and convertible roof with automatic activation further justify its loyal fan base. Need we say more? At $34,310 with all the bells and whistles, the RF is even harder to pass up. Fuel Economy: 26 city/33 highway/ 29 combined Base Price: $32,620 MazdaUSA.com
Ford Focus RS 2017 FORD FOCUS RS
Unleash the beast! Even Waldo is easier to find than a new American automobile boasting manual transmission, but thankfully the beastly 2017 Ford Focus RS hatchback has saved the day. Flexing a road-terrorizing 350-horsepower engine from its 2.3L EcoBoost engine, the signature Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive System for optimal maneuverability, and different power modes including Normal, Sport, Track, and Drift are just a few of the mouthwatering performance options lighting up the auto industry. While its muscular exterior complete with a menacing front grille, rear spoiler, custom fog lamps, dual exhaust, and optional 18-inch RS Sparkle Silver-painted alloy wheels turns heads, the interior is just as attractive. The high-performance RECARO seating; leather and alloy stick shift; advanced, yet user-friendly SYNC3 interface; 10-speaker Sony sound system; and rear view camera further enhance the riding experience. Ultimately, this Ford is a monster any thrill seeker would love to unleash. Fuel Economy: 19 city/25 highway/ 22 combined Base Price: $36,120 Ford.com
