LECOM The Calling Brochure

CAN YOU HEAR

THE CALLING?

MIND BODY SPIRIT LECOM believes that when mind, body and spirit come together, the impossible becomes suddenly possible. This is what we teach at LECOM. It is a calling each and every one of our students embodies to become the best they can be. To see human potential taken to the next level – and beyond. To prevent disease and to treat it. To give hope. It’s what can happen when you learn to truly believe in yourself; when mind, body and spirit become one. This is the calling we can help you fulfill. While many LECOM graduates go on to become leaders in primary healthcare, that’s not where our story ends. Every day, around the country, LECOM physicians and pharmacists in every specialty, and soon dentists, will practice medicine on a higher level. They hear a calling to help people. Our graduates are the future of healthcare and the ones who will make a difference in people’s lives today and tomorrow.

Highest Quality Medical Education The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is a leader in meeting the challenges of 21st century medical education. A report to the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation called on medical colleges to reduce the expense of becoming a physician, to shorten the time that it takes to earn a degree, and to train physicians who can help solve today’s health care problems. LECOM already has met that call to action with quality medical education at an affordable price, three-year degree programs in osteopathic medicine and pharmacy, and a student-centered learning curriculum including ProblemBased Learning. The college has a diverse faculty trained in highly-effective teaching methods. LECOM has developed an extensive network of physicians, pharmacists and dentists committed to teaching students at clinical practice sites.

LECOM is one of the fastest growing medical colleges in the country and offers some of the most innovative learning programs at its campuses in Erie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania and Bradenton, Florida. LECOM is a private college founded in 1992 and has grown to become the largest medical school in the country. The nation has a growing demand for new physicians, dentists and pharmacists, and LECOM’s mission is to prepare health care professionals trained in the osteopathic tradition of competent and compassionate, whole-person primary care.

US News & World Report Best Medical Colleges ranks LECOM third in the nation for the number of graduating primary care physicians. The magazine also reports that LECOM has one of the lowest tuitions and the largest student enrollment of all medical schools in the United States. Our students consistently rank near the top in board scores and pass rates.

I Hear the Calling For many, the initial year of medical school carries with it many “firsts” and transformations. From the moment that I first wore my white coat, the world around me changed forever and I realized that I had new responsibilities. I was becoming a physician. I decided upon a career in osteopathic medicine after shadowing a DO during my junior year of college. I instantly knew that osteopathic medicine was my calling. I know that one does not simply “become” a physician. Reaching this goal requires mind, body and spirit working together to achieve your goals and realize your true potential. I find that the sense of collaborative learning at LECOM helps students develop a sense of community that serves the unique needs of individual patients. LECOM encourages its students to grow into professional physicians, well-prepared to work within a demanding hospital setting where teamwork makes a difference. I plan to practice pediatric medicine, and I have become actively involved in the Pediatrics Club, Wellsville and Kidshape. These groups that encourage healthy living and provide health care to the underserved are fostered by LECOM. Participation in such activities aids the students in learning the value of community service. From the moment that I donned my first white coat, I became an integral member of the medical community. I now feel that I am developing the attributes of a competent and compassionate osteopathic physician. LECOM has brought this about for me.

OSTEOPATH

YOUR CALLING: Medical Career Opportunities Medical students pursuing the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at LECOM Erie choose from five student-centered learning pathways: traditional Lecture-Discussion courses; small-group Problem-Based Learning; Directed Study based on self-directed learning modules; and the Primary Care Scholars and the Accelerated Physician Assistant Pathways, which are three-year programs. At LECOM Bradenton and Seton Hill University, all medical students enroll in the Problem-Based Learning Pathway. DOs focus on preventive medicine and practice a “whole-person” approach to treat the person, not just the symptoms or disease. Their added training gives them hands-on diagnostic and treatment skills the healing touch. DOs integrate osteopathic manipulative treatment into their practices with a mind, body and spirit approach. This additional medical tool enables the body to fulfill its natural tendency toward good health.

HICMEDICINE

DOs spend time getting to know their patients as people. Many osteopathic physicians have deep connections with their communities and become involved as volunteers and leaders in local activities. LECOM is looking for students who will excel in academics, clinical care, research and community service. The College selects applicants who show an awareness of osteopathic medicine, and understand a total-person approach to health care: mind, body, and spirit. Getting to know a DO is a good way to learn if you have the aptitude and desire to become an osteopathic physician. Applicants should meet and spend time shadowing a physician. This provides the applicant with exposure to the osteopathic profession and enhances awareness of the osteopathic medical philosophy. Knowing more about the profession will prepare the applicant for the interview. Completing this crucial step also demonstrates the applicant’s commitment to the osteopathic profession.

LECOM medical students benefit from having their choice of different learning pathways designed to match their individual learning styles. These pathways allow students to gain their preclinical education in a manner that suits them best; to help them be the most successful student they can be.

PHARMACY LECOM School of Pharmacy students have the choice of either a three-year, year-round pathway or a traditional four-year pathway to obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The School of Pharmacy in Erie continues to meet the demand for new pharmacists by accelerating the coursework to allow graduation with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in only three years. The LECOM School of Pharmacy curriculum in Bradenton is a traditional four-year Doctor of Pharmacy degree pathway. Regardless of the pathway you choose, the administration and faculty continuously work to enhance learning styles by using active and interactive teaching strategies.

YOUR CALLING: Pharmacy Today’s pharmacist is an important partner in patient health care. A more complex role has replaced the traditional view of the pharmacist — one of simply dispensing medication from behind a drug store counter — to a medication expert available as a resource not only to patients directly, but also to other members of the health care team. Often, the pharmacist may be the first person that the patient contacts about a health care issue. Pharmacists now have enhanced knowledge about prescription medicines and the diseases they treat. This enables them to provide guidance to patients with basic ailments needing only an over-the-counter remedy, and the knowledge to refer patients to a physician when symptoms require a more thorough examination. Pharmacists are involved in patient counseling, medication therapy and disease state management, and are an information source for the patient. Drug therapy is complex, comprehensive and challenging to understand and use. Translating complex information into an understandable form for the patient is key to ensuring that the patient takes his or her medication as prescribed. Working with patients and physicians, pharmacists can help modify patient behavior in a positive direction. A pharmacist may also become involved in assisting a physician in choosing the most appropriate medication for each individual patient. LECOM pharmacy students have earned national recognition by bringing awareness of prescription drug abuse and the need for medication adherence to the Erie and Bradenton communities. The National Consumers League, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy selected the LECOM pharmacy students among the award winners of the first-ever Script Your Future Medication Adherence Challenge for student pharmacists.

Pharmacy students at LECOM enjoy the fact that they have a choice between the threeyear accelerated program at the Erie campus and the traditional four-year curriculum at the Bradenton campus.

The affordable tuition,

in either pathway, allows LECOM pharmacy students to experience a quality education at a reasonable cost.

DENTISTRY

YOUR CALLING: DentISTRY

LECOM School of Dental Medicine is a unique interprofessional opportunity for students to learn alongside osteopathic medical students as both groups gain an understanding of human anatomy and the basic sciences. While osteopathic medical students discover hands-on diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, dental students engage in their own first year clinical experiences. Dentistry offers many opportunities, challenges and rewards. It is a rapidly changing, expanding profession. The Doctor of Dental Medicine is part of the primary healthcare team that is on the forefront of preventing disease and promoting wellness. Dentists are often the first healthcare professionals to recognize and identify a wide variety of diseases, ranging from hypertension to oral cancer. They diagnose and treat problems affecting the teeth, gingival tissue, tongue, lips and jaws. These oral diseases often reveal other health issues that may require a follow-up with the patient’s family physician. Dentists improve patients’ appearance by using a wide variety of cosmetic dental procedures. These services can make patients feel better about their smiles. Dentists perform trauma surgery, dental implants, tissue grafts and laser surgery to repair, restore and maintain the teeth, gums and oral tissues that have been lost or damaged by accident or disease.

The work goes beyond the dentist chair as dentists teach good habits for good health by educating their patients, as well as the general public, on how to achieve oral health and prevent disease. Like our osteopathic physicians, dentists treat the whole person, interacting with people of all ages, cultures and personalities.

Students in the Doctor of Dental Medicine program at LECOM in Bradenton, Fla. can look forward to the unique, innovative ProblemBased Learning curriculum, along with individual clinical experiences. Having access to one’s own operatory is a major plus, and doubles the patient contact hours of most other schools. Trained in every facet of dental care, graduates are prepared to enter any field of dental medicine; to join an existing practice or to begin their own.

YOur CAMPUS Since it opened in 1993, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine main campus has grown dramatically to provide space for the increasing class size of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Pharmacy. In addition to the Grandview Boulevard location, LECOM Erie now holds classes for the Master of Science, Problem-Based Learning and Pharmacy Programs at our Erie bayfront site. The LECOM Student Center, near the main campus, provides space for study and student activities, along with a Coffee Culture Café and Eatery. The John M. & Silvia Ferretti Medical Fitness & Wellness Center offers a mind, body and spirit approach to health and fitness. The continuing demand for new primary care physicians and the rapid population growth of Florida led LECOM to open a branch campus between Bradenton and Sarasota. LECOM Bradenton is in Lakewood Ranch, a master-planned community that is one of the fastest growing regions in the country.

Because of the continuing national demand for physicians, LECOM has expanded the Erie class size with an additional site at Seton Hill University in Greensburg. LECOM at Seton Hill occupies two of the university’s buildings for classrooms, laboratories, and a learning resource center. The facility is designed to handle the ProblemBased Learning curriculum. The College designed its facilities so that each and every detail lends itself to the mission of teaching students how to care for patients. All LECOM facilities offer the latest instructional technology. Lecture halls have ‘smart classroom’ equipment with wireless and wired computer network connections for student laptops. Classrooms offer multi-media presentations and in the larger lecture halls, instructors control and illustrate their presentations from a computer tablet at the lectern.
