Christmas-New Year Message to Our Readers At the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and across the globe, the Christmas Season is a time resplendent with tradition. Even before President Ulysses S. Grant established Christmas as one of the first American federal holidays in 1870, it had been a season that melded awe with wonder to create a holiday both joyous and holy. The events of this glorious season are transformed into timeless moments. Christmas songs and hymns, familiar and comforting, recast our daily routines into something new, creating golden moments that endure. Paired with faith, important customs of the season highlight family traditions passed from generation to generation. Central to our shared humanity, such events call upon us to share with loved ones the threads of tradition rooted in faith and reinforced with family as these celebrations link us to the tapestry of the ages. For us – at LECOM – we seek ever to keep the chain of family, community, tradition, and service alive. Christmas, the holiday season, the New Year to come and all that they embody must always be a timeless season where faith and family find each other. As you join us - whether newly part of the LECOM family or as established alumni - let us honor and bless one another with traditions of belonging. For those newly arriving, may your years with LECOM become a resplendent tapestry of knowledge, community, and constancy that through your exceptional medical education, will long endure. In that same vein, we extend to those who have a history with our revered institution, the invitation to support those who will follow you. LECOM scholarships have conveyed the gift of the possible upon many deserving students. The College welcomes our alumni to make an endof-year contribution to the LECOM Student Scholarship Fund so that the joy of the possible is magnified for others.

Your support of the LECOM Student Scholarship Fund will help deserving students fulfill their dreams of becoming physicians, pharmacists, dentists, and podiatrists.

Grateful Alumna Recounts - LECOM Lifts the Lamps of Learning America - indeed, its very existence - has meant a palpable hope, an abundance of opportunity, and a promise of liberty for tens of millions of people throughout its almost 250 years. The familiar poem emblazoned on a plaque on the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor has called to many, with its last line of invitation reading: “I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” With the Lamp a liberating symbol, millions of people have left troubled lands to find a new home, a second chance, and a better life for themselves and for their families. Likewise the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) has lifted its Lamp of Learning beside its door for those who have heard the calling. One such notable arrival was Olga Selioutski, DO, a 2002 LECOM graduate who immigrated from the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) to the United States. The accomplished alumna is joining the faculty at the University of Mississippi as a Professor of Neurology, Epilepsy. She will serve as Division Chief and as Vice Chair for Faculty Development.

p. 05

Continued from page 04 (NYCOM). “I recall that we were searching for apartments to rent on Long Island and mulling over the decision whether to go to Erie, Pennsylvania or not,” reflected Dr. Selioutski. Alex (her husband) and she chose to make the trip to LECOM. “He finished his day shift in the residency clinic, and we drove all night for the interview the next morning,” reminisced the LECOM alumna. There are moments that one remembers all one’s life, that become pivotal in defining one’s future. That visit to LECOM was one of those moments. “I was instantly impressed with the seriousness of the interview process and with the facility itself. Alex interacted with Colleen (Pamula) the LECOM Receptionist, at the entrance to the building. He, too, was impressed with the professionalism and with the dignity that the medical school revealed,” recalled Dr. Selioutski. The moment of truth had manifested itself for Dr. Selioutski. “While driving back to Long Island, we agreed that if LECOM extended an acceptance, that I would take it. That letter came.” In the following years, Dr. Selioutski met her best friends, she learned copious information, which she explained, “I still apply to this day.”

“I was fortunate to meet incredible educators, collaborators, and mentors along the way. Then, one day, I realized a forgotten dream that I had when attending medical school in Russia, one that started materializing itself. I, Olga Selioutski, could become a full Professor - and of all fields, in Neurology!”

While learning the English language, Olga Selioutski was simultaneously trying to get back on track to become a physician in a new country. Since Eastern Europe did not have college intermediate programs, Dr. Selioutski possessed only a high school diploma. Her first step was to obtain a college degree in the United States.

Dr. Selioutski’s letter explained that, “In a few days, I will be joining faculty at the University of Mississippi as a Professor of Neurology, Epilepsy.” She will also serve as Chief and Vice Chair for Faculty Development.

Once she earned her bachelor’s degree in Science from Stony Olga Selioutski, D.O. Brook University, she began to apply to medical schools. By the time that Dr. Selioutski had received the invitation for the interview from LECOM, she already had been accepted at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine

Dental Outreach Event Travels to Pittsburgh The four pillars that define and underpin that glimmering Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) mission, and that create the indelible imprimatur of excellence: Education, Community Service, Research, and Clinical Care, are the foundational plinths that serve to support the overarching mission of a grand institution. One such recent Community Service endeavor was undertaken by Dr. Susan Calderbank, LECOM Director of Patient Care, who spent Saturday, October 28, 2023 with 27 LECOM dental scholars and 2 faculty members at the Pittsburgh Mission of Mercy. The Mission of Mercy (MOM) provides free dental care for the homeless, unhoused veterans, and the underserved. More than 800 people were seen during the event. Pittsburgh Steelers notable, Rocky Bleier, joined the gathering to greet the attendees. The LECOM students’ efforts and healthcare contributions were deeply appreciated by those who sought care; and several partaking of the services commented favorably about the scholars’ evident professionalism. Throughout each region in which LECOM has set its cornerstone, tangible investment into the community and into a host of programs, paired with the active advancement of those programs, serve to educate, inform, and to effectuate the betterment of each neighborhood within the LECOM footprint. Osteopathic health entails whole-body health - mind, body, and spirit - and the need for individuals to find a happy, healthful, purposeful involvement in community is central to that mission.

LECOM Scholar is a Happy Camper Second-year Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) medical scholar, Eleanor Tung-Hahn, recently served as a counselor and medical staff member at Camp Discovery, an American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) sponsored experience for children with various serious skin disorders. Indeed, Camp Discovery offers children living with a chronic skin condition a one-of-a-kind camp experience. Provided at no cost to the families, Camp Discovery is one week of fun for youngsters with conditions ranging from eczema and psoriasis to vitiligo and alopecia, and a plethora of other conditions. Prior to the start of the Camp Discovery event, the counselors received information about the campers who would be in attendance. Multiple pages of text read like hospital notes, detailing medicines, bandaging protocols, anaphylactic allergies, comorbidities, and camper preferences. Eleanor Tung-Hahn, LECOM Bradenton Scholar.

Tung-Hahn’s mission, and that of her fellow counselors, was to ensure that the campers would enjoy the best weeks of their entire year. The LECOM scholar viewed herself as a facilitator, helping the young campers “simply to be kids.”

All of their medical details became instantly inconsequential as these young people, determined to live in the moment, magnified the mission. Tung-Hahn’s duties ranged from encouraging the campers to eat, stay hydrated, and apply sunscreen while still ensuring that everyone was able to experience the exhilaration of a tube ride on the lake, an outing on horseback, reeling in a fish, or making s’mores and Eleanor Tung-Hahn stands with her fellow friendship bracelets. volunteers at Camp Discovery. The assiduous scholar recalled one of her most memorable moments: “While we were preparing one of our camper’s nighttime regimens, a fellow counselor (a prior camper herself) shared her story.” The counselor, with a chronic congenital skin condition, “ truly represented hope and possibilities with her technology hacks, adaptive tools, tips and utensils for daily life activities, going to college, having a job, and leading an untethered adult life.” “By just being herself, she was an instant role model for our campers. She was a real-life sign that people can thrive despite unfavorable odds; and medical prognoses are not always definitive.” Eleanor Tung-Hahn found Camp Discovery a place for interpersonal connections, self-discovery, optimism, and the joy found in embracing the possible in daily life. The LECOM student averred, “I can only hope that every medical student, resident, and physician might be lucky enough to have the best week like my campers and I had. Camp Discovery opens the door for each child with skin disease to access this same magic.”

OMED Gala Sees LECOM in the Forefront The American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) 2023 Honors Gala was held on Friday, October 6, 2023, at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort in conjunction with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Osteopathic Medical Education Conference (OMED) Conference. The awards program was wellattended with a full house of more than 700 guests plus virtual attendees. Honorees from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) included, John E. Balmer, D.O. and Dr. Brianne Howerton whose tributes in the evening event program booklet highlighted their skills and accomplishments. Dr. Balmer was named Physician of the Year by the AOF. His effort and undertaking in establishing a rural health clinic in medically underserved Spartanburg, Pennsylvania was a key aspect of this achievement coupled with his lengthy and distinguished career as a primary care physician. His ongoing involvement in actively engaging LECOM students in his practice further underscores his commitment to the advancement of osteopathic medicine.

LECOM alumna, Dr. Howerton received the Presidential Memorial Leadership Award. For nearly twenty years, the AOA/AOF Presidential Memorial Leadership Award has annually honored and recognized osteopathic medical students who are deeply committed to the principles of osteopathic medicine and who have taken great strides toward becoming top student leaders. Brigadier General, Mary V. Krueger, Commanding General of the Regional Health Command, presented an inspiring message as the main stage speaker. LECOM is especially proud of these honorees, for throughout all aspects of LECOM medical training programs, scholars are called to recognize that the cause of service to others is central to finding the core-felt voice of a genuine care for others.

With more than 1,000 guests filling the thronging gathering place, bidders participated eagerly in the event that has become the glimmering gem in the student scholarship crown.

Guests peruse and bid on a variety of items, services, and experiences.

The 2023 offerings at the Erie Scholarship Auction included more than 580 items, presented both in a silent and in a live auction format. More than 200 students participated in the Auction Gala as runners, ticket sellers, and as bid spotters for the Live Auction segment of the program. The cost of a medical school education for the future healthcare practitioner of today can approach $250,000. The burden upon students to meet the onerous financial obligations while balancing the demands of a rigorous and exacting medical program is arduous. This grand occasion affords significant support and succor to the scholarship recipients. The delight that they found in being part of the program was readily apparent. The dual benefits and fundraisers for future LECOM doctors, pharmacists, dentists, and podiatrists are keenly anticipated events that provide monies raised to assist the financial needs of matriculating students. The encompassing theme and character of the evenings were of immense support of the students. Noticeably spilling forth from each sponsor and contributor, supporter, and bidder, was the palpable sense that the evening was focused upon building futures. The annual dual events have raised millions, and with each passing year, they prove to be even more enlivening. As the largest medical school in the country with campuses in Erie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania; Bradenton, Florida and Elmira, New York the contributions extend to generations of medical practitioners a dedicated commitment to exceptionalism and to educational distinction. The auction event is ever evocative of that profound charge.
