And Now We Welcome the New Year

“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been.” —Rainer Maria Rilke, poet

There is a clever witticism that explains, “The optimist waits up on New Year’s Eve to welcome in the New Year; while the pessimist waits up on New Year’s Eve to make sure that the old year has left.” Yet, we look forward - for the future offers the possible. For more than three decades, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) has enjoyed the gift of a great many new years.

A purpose-driven mission has produced the best in medical education with LECOM physicians, pharmacists, dentists, podiatrists healthcare professionals all - bringing their unsurpassed training, commitment, integrity, and community service to the greater environs of our society as a whole. This New Year is a time for us to reflect upon fresh starts and things that are yet to be; to take stock of that which we have endured and overcome; to embrace the meaning in the calling of our lives; and to gather with families and friends and to welcome the hope of a brighter tomorrow. It is most fitting that during this hopeful season, we at LECOM, offer gratitude to those who enrich our lives. We strive also to be the bright and promising light in the lives that, through our care and skills, we may also enrich. As medical professionals, we recognize that all of these blessings, and that life itself, comes not from the hand of man, but from Providence. Indeed, we are blessed with talents to live and to work toward a purpose greater than ourselves. It is the responsibility of our campus leaders to acknowledge our destiny of purpose, to be grateful for our benefits, and humbly to advance a noble calling on a lifelong journey. As we recall our College history at LECOM and as we remember each fresh start, we recognize

Especially at this time of year, LECOM is thankful for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who protect these freedoms while forgoing their own desires. As long as they serve - to them, during this new year and always, we recognize that their courage sustains our freedoms, their sacrifice deserves our thanks, and their character fortifies our pride. LECOM extends a sincere welcome back to all of those who are returning to campus and to those studying at various locales. May the promise of a brighter, more hopeful 2024, lead us confidently into the year ahead.

LECOM School of Health Services Administration: Strengthening Healthcare One Leader at a Time The healthcare needs of an ever increasing, ever transforming populace are vast; and this moment in time is pivotal to build a solid and prepared healthcare foundation. Highly-trained, skilled leaders and administrators are learning to address the needs of the moment at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Health Services Administration in Bradenton, Florida. The School, in the vanguard of healthcare education, is imparting indispensable knowledge and inculcating key leadership skills upon its scholars, those necessary to navigate the intricacies of a modern healthcare industry. “The School of Health Services Administration is nestled in the largest medical college in the United States, so it is uniquely positioned to teach the business of healthcare,” noted Dr. Timothy Novak, the Dean of the LECOM School of Health Services Administration. That is only one element among many that sets LECOM apart from traditional healthcare administration degrees. The School of Health Services Administration (SHSA) offers five graduate degree programs that empower students with the expertise to lead and to manage broad ranging health service organizations. These organizations span hospitals, healthcare facilities, public health agencies, pharmacies, private practice multispecialty groups, and senior living centers. “We’re preparing the healthcare leaders of tomorrow, today. Our programs are flexible, essential, and affordable,” affirmed Dr, Novak. Indeed the knowledge that scholars gain from these programs is vital to understanding interprofessional

Dr. Novak noted that the SHSA at LECOM also is set apart by its scholar-practitioner approach. “One of the things that we say to our students is that ‘it’s not just what you know, it’s what you can do,’” furthered Dr. Novak. Alongside academic rigor, LECOM provides students with the practical skills needed to excel as healthcare administrators in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. The philosophy central to the SHSA is the concept of whole-person wellness. This holistic approach aligns with osteopathic principles that prioritize the well-being of the Mind, Body, and Spirit. It is a philosophy deeply imbued within the LECOM mission. “Honoring osteopathic principles, educational excellence is maintained through an outcome-focused, case-based curriculum with experiential discovery and action research taught through a flexible online learning platform,” elaborated the SHSA leader. The LECOM SHSA takes an interprofessional approach in healthcare, encouraging cross-discipline engagement and collaboration among the fields. Indeed, LECOM is dedicated to promoting integration and collaboration across healthcare sectors, including dentistry, pharmacy, mental health services, and substance abuse prevention. Because the demands of a busy world require flexibility for working professionals, SHSA offers online courses designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals. The importance of flexibility cannot be overstated, as it allows talented individuals to pursue advanced degrees while continuing to work full-time. This approach is essential in meeting the growing demand for healthcare services. SHSA also sets itself apart from traditional healthcare administration programs by offering a range of unique specializations. The programs include Biomedical Ethics, Public Health, and Medical Cannabinoid Therapeutics, each

Public Health equips students to handle various public health challenges, including pandemics, the impact of poverty upon individuals, nutrition, mental health services, disaster planning , health education, and prevention services. Medical Cannabinoid Therapeutics focuses upon understanding the medicinal potential of cannabis and its derivatives, addressing the rapidly evolving and multi-billion dollar cannabis industry. Given the real-time momentum of the healthcare industry, career prospects for LECOM graduates offer vast opportunities. LECOM SHSA programs are designed to produce leaders in the healthcare industry who can adapt to rapidly changing requirements and who can provide exceptional support to healthcare organizations. The SHSA Doctor of Healthcare Administration (D.H.A.) Program stands at the forefront of preparing scholar-practitioners to address the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging healthcare technologies. The program equips professionals to become innovative leaders and problem solvers who can bridge the gap between theory and practice, addressing complex and multifaceted issues. The LECOM School of Health Services Administration highlights exceptionalism in healthcare education, equipping future leaders with the knowledge, skills, and adaptability necessary to excel while traversing a swiftly shifting healthcare landscape. The LECOM School of Health Services Administration is strengthening healthcare one leader at a time as whole-person wellness, flexibility for working professionals, unique specializations, and a focus upon emerging technologies make LECOM the preferred choice for discerning healthcare administrators.

LECOM D.O. - D.H.A. Anticipating the Annual Alumnus Finds Career LECOM Student Satisfaction ThroughScholarship Auction Doctoral JourneyGalas: When Dr. Brian Kessler was first graduated from the second Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Class of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), twentyfive years ago, little did he know that his journey would eventually lead him to serve as a Medical School Dean helping to train the next generation of physicians at the Campbell School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lillington, North Carolina. During his distinguished career as a family practice physician, Dr. Kessler developed a passion for lifelong education, one which eventually led him to a prominent role in academia. In 2011, he joined Campbell as an Associate Dean, a position that was followed, in 2016, by a five-year appointment as the Dean of DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tennessee. When the opportunity arose in 2021, Dr. Kessler was honored to return to Campbell as Dean. Indeed, he returned to the familiar campus bolstered with a wealth of knowledge gained through acquiring more than twenty years of experience as a practitioner and academician. Shortly after his relocation to Campbell,

Dr. Kessler became aware of a new Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA) Program being developed at the LECOM School of Health Services Administration (SHSA) located in Bradenton, Florida. Because of his prior favorable medical school experience with LECOM and coupled with his desire to learn more about “the business side of healthcare,” Dr. Kessler was accepted into the inaugural cohort of the three-year DHA Program in 2021. The journey to his obtaining a DHA Degree and also to his being graduated with the first cohort in 2023 proved to be a watershed undertaking for Dr. Kessler. During a recent interview, the accomplished graduate noted that the DHA Program emphasizes the development of leadership and management skills; tools that have been invaluable in supporting his role as

Executive Interviews Highlight LECOM MHSA The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Master’s of Health Services Administration (MHSA) Degree Program offered in Bradenton, Florida celebrated its 10th year in January of 2024. Professor Terri Runo has led the Program since its inception, and recently, she outlined some of the key features of the two-year Program, offered through an online-learning platform. “In the second year of the Program, we require all students to conduct a series of Executive Interviews with leaders at their own local healthcare facilities,” Professor Runo explained. “This opportunity helps scholars gain real-world experience very quickly and provides a better understanding of what it is like to serve in a leadership role,” she noted.

Jacob Crilley

Jacob Crilley, a dual enrollee in the LECOM Pharmacy and MHSA Programs, explained that, “The ability to sit down with leaders in the industry and to learn from their experiences first-hand has been invaluable. The executive interview series has been greatly advantageous for the start of my pharmacy and healthcare administration careers.” Haley Sorenson, a dual enrollee of the LECOM Medical School and MHSA Programs affirmed, “The Executive Interview process provides a special opportunity for students to immerse themselves in understanding the roles of hospital leaders at every level. Being able to view the process of decision- making from a first-person perspective has given me great insight into the daily workings of healthcare organizations.” Executive Interviews are held in two phases. The first session helps scholars gain a general understanding of the way in which healthcare leaders function through multiple levels of healthcare delivery systems.

Haley Sorenson

The second phase of the process applies this knowledge to addressing a real-world problem discovered in the course of the interview with practical recommendations using the student’s accumulated knowledge. This approach is consistent with the LECOM philosophy of developing scholar-practitioners who are well-equipped to lead in a challenging modern environment. Many changes in healthcare have abounded in the decade since the Program began. Pressing onward, it is clear that more changes are inevitable, including the arrival of artificial intelligence and machine learning. LECOM always has been an innovator in medical education; and there is little doubt that even as the horizons are transformed by the technological advances of tomorrow, the LECOM MHSA Program will innovate and adapt, continuing the LECOM pledge of excellence and exceptionalism that is its hallmark.

Investment in Knowledge Pays the Best Interest

LECOM Spring CME at Peek’n Peak

“An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” So said author and statesman, Benjamin Franklin as he described the inexorable value of the pursuit of knowledge. The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) advances the wise words articulated by one of America’s Founding Fathers as the College hosts its annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) events. Those interested in participating in the next eagerly awaited event may register now for the LECOM Spring CME to be held February 29 - March 3, 2024 at Peek’n Peak Resort in Clymer, New York. In-Person and Virtual Options are available and registration may be completed easily online at CME.LECOM.edu. The American Osteopathic Association CCME has approved this program for credit in Category 1-A. Many state licensing boards require a minimum of 20 Category 1-A CME credits for license renewal, and these programs supply sufficient credit hours to attain that objective. Primary Care 2024 will focus upon health problems commonly seen in the offices of primary care physicians. LECOM will offer 20 lecture hours presented by the college clinical faculty. This course includes lectures that cover cardiovascular topics, geriatrics, psychiatry, and others. Included in this Conference will be two hours of required opioid education that healthcare providers must take for Pennsylvania state license renewal. Each Spring, physicians from across the nation assemble for the event - the Primary Care CME Conference at Peek’n Peak Conference Center. The event regularly draws knowledgeseeking medical professionals and students to the resort to deepen, broaden, and further develop their understanding of, and proficiencies in, various medical and practice-related areas. The Conferences always are very well organized, with plenty of interaction time for questions to be posed to the presenters.
