hen two Brighton-based friends, musician Eyal Shavit and Latest TV presenter Yael Breuer, spent last Christmas Day together and chatted about various Christmas hits, they hadn't realised that this innocent muso chat would inspire them to write a Christmas song of their own. But while the chestnuts were still roasting on the open fire and Santa's elves were busy distributing presents through Brighton's many chimneys, the first draft of Song for Christmas was written and composed. The draft was later perfected and recorded by a renowned singer-songwriter, somewhat enigmatically going by the name of Shiny Mavrik, who describes the song as "heartwarming, cosy reflection of family time at Christmas". The result, finalised and polished in Brighton's and London's finest music studios, is Song For Christmas, which is, according to its writers "possibly the best Christmas song you'll ever hear". Song for Christmas by Shiny Mavrik will be available from iTunes, youtube, Spotify and the usual platforms http://itunes.apple.com/album/id1491122721?ls=1&app=itunes

SCHOOL’S OUT! I

n 2018 Latest CIC embarked on an ambitious and groundbreaking series of new projects working in local schools. The first, “The Gulldashians” proved to be a huge and popular success, a comedy drama written and performed by pupils from Longhill High School, that was screened by Latest TV to much acclaim. Working with that school inspired the company to look at further projects and at that stage Latest’s Andrew Kay decided that, running in parallel with Latest TV’s LGBT+ programming, it would be good to engage with the school’s LGBTU+ youth group. The head teacher of the school and the staff involved in running this vibrant band of young people were excited to join in. Andrew Kay explains more. “My initial reaction to the idea was one of excitement and then amazement. If only I had had that kind of support and opportunity when I was growing up. But back in the 1960s being gay was not easy and coming out was not an option. “At my first meeting with the kids at the school I was blown away by their enthusiasm but even more so by their openness – where does that strength come from? From the very start I was determined that the project should be defined by their ideas and that my role wold be as mentor and facilitator. So first I had to find out what they would like to do, ideally working with our team at Latest TV. “Well TV was exactly what they wanted to do and specifically a chat show. I make my own chat shows so it was right up my street and very soon they had come up with ideas of who they would like to have as guests. They wanted performers, drag stars, comedians, politicians, artists and writers, it was a good list but one that would take some organising and in some cases some begging. But before very long Brighton’s vibrant LGBT+ community got on board. “The kids took to it like ducks to water and by the end of that first project each one had gone in front of the cameras and grilled, often mercilessly, their guest, I know because at the end they insisted on interviewing me! “In the end we made with them eight half hour shows called Queer But Here and they are currently being screend on Latest TV – yes they are that good! “We held a preview with an invited audience of the great and good and the universal response was ‘Broaden the project!!!’ get more schools involved – so we have. Longhill will make a second series of Queer But Here and they are now joined by Blatchington Mill school who are making a series of comedy shorts call Out Of The Mouths… , Hove Park School are working on two projects, one about the percieved and real images of the LGBT+ world and one about global cultures in the UK. In the new year we start another with Peacehaven Community School. It’s exciting, energising and gratifying working with these bright and shiny young citizens and with the school staff who are so supportive. “None of this could have been possible without the kind support of The Rainbow Fund and Brighton and Hove City Council, and of course the generous gift of time gifted by those people who have been involved, guests and of course my colleagues at Latest. “We work hard to make all this happen but it costs not only in time but financially too and we are always looking for any kind of support that

anyone, from individuals to companies and funding bodies, that we can find. These young voices are the voices of the future and as such as we grow older they will be the voices that define our futures.” Eventually all these projects will be drawn together in a TV presence called Schools’ Out! to be broadcast on Latest TV in 2020. If you can offer any kind of help then please contact Andrew kay by email: andrew@thelatest.co.uk Queer But Here can currently be seen on Latest TV Freeview 7, Virgin 159 or at thelatest.co.uk 9

THE LANDLADY

ELECTION SECTION… am writing this on the eve of the General Election. I have to get up very early tomorrow morning in order to vote, before I jet off on an ill-timed shopping trip to New York. I say ill-timed, because, when I booked the flight in mid-summer, I was unaware that my shopping trip would coincide with a load of freelance work, which I am now going to miss. That’ll teach me to think with my credit-card, rather than my brain. I will be happy to come back, hopefully laden with Christmas gifts, to radio and TV coverage not punctuated by horrible shouty discussions between rival political parties. I live in the centre of Brighton and am often awoken by drunken people screaming over each other in an argument during the wee hours and, to my finely tuned ear, these politicians do not sound that much different, not giving each other the

“I will be happy to come back to radio and TV not punctuated by horrible shouty discussions between rival political parties”

On the morning that the new girl came to look at the room, a gentleman also came for a viewing. I found him a little strange from the outset and, even The Small Daughter who happened to be sailing through the kitchen on her way to work declared him to be ‘weird’ having only glimpsed him for a milli second. I can’t explain exactly what was wrong with him, but there was definitely a faint whiff of stale alcohol and, when he said that his landlord wanted him to move, without explaining why, I started to hear alarm bells and… after all, I’ve only just got rid of the whiff of alcohol from the previous tenant… Merry Christmas… and a Happy New Government…

space to breath, let alone speak. I shall also be glad to get back and welcome my new lodger, who came along at just the right time to facilitate my shopping trip. She will be moving in just before Christmas. I took my time to find this lodger, after the previous one who had the room left with one week’s notice, didn’t pay the notice-period rent and left the room in the worst state I’ve ever seen. To add insult to injury, he’s threatening to sue me for his damages deposit, which barely covers the rent owed, let alone the carpet cleaning costs.

picture too perfect

I

was checking out my social media presence the other day when I came upon a picture of some French onion soup that looked delicious. It made me want to go and try or even pop into the kitchen and make a batch. Then on close inspection I realised it was posted by a chain restaurant that I had recently dined in with very little success. I had chosen the French onion soup, as it was a “French” brand. It was pretty grim, a gloopy bowl of allium slurry topped with a sad and very soggy croute topped with mediocre cheese. And it was far from hot making it quite apparent that this had been

“What you see here is exactly what I got”

this is the blight of the modern restaurant scene causing huge problems for both kicthens and front of house staff. Anyway we all do it and I think it unlikely that we will stop and I’m sure that the better looking dishes when posted on social media will benefit the restaurants responsible so they win in the end. Why am I telling you this and not naming the venue? Well the savvy amongst you will perhaps have worked it out and I’m not in the busines of being mean. No, the reason I write this is because for 28 years now I have always taken my own photographs for this column. Yes I get invited along to places from time to time and yes they will often offer me their beautifully staged food images. I always refuse. I show pictures of the actual dishes I have eaten, after all, my career in book publishing as an art director exposed me to the tricks that can be employed by food photographers, tricks I might add that across those 16 years I fought, with some success, to abandon. So what you see here is exactly what I got!

zapped from cold. I was with a friend and didn’t make a fuss, unusual for me I know but I was simply not in the mood. And yes I should have sent it back, it’s what I tell everyone they should do if something doesn’t come up to the mark. My main course was hardly any better, the chicken dry and underseasoned and for some odd reason plonked on top of the green beans which were already cold on arrival. The gratin dauphinoise was better, but not stellar and it was a pasrimonious portion. My friend’s mushroom risotto, an odd dish for a venue that once refused to serve me a Campari soda as it was a “French” restaurant, was a sorry looking affair that also failed the heat test and in his words “had had the very merest acquaintance with the promised truffle”. I must confess that when I saw his dish I was very pleased to have not ordered it. Of course like every diner with a phone I took pics, apparently

leyton’s talking about jamie limited to them. Some people in the audience will maybe see the Dean character and think ‘That was me’ or they might see the dad and think ‘I was homophobic’ or they’ll go ‘Everybody is celebrating this boy here so why do I have these negative feelings?’ They might get dragged to the theatre by their girlfriends or wives, thinking ‘Oh my God, what have I gotten myself into?’ then hopefully by the end of it their hearts and minds will have been opened and their opinions on things have changed. What challenges does the role of Jamie present? It’s about the emotional journey he has to go on. Eight times a week I’m having an argument with this person, bonding with that one, having to cry about this, having to cry about that… The rollercoaster of emotions is a lot to navigate. Being 16 years old is hard. I remember being 16 with all those hormones and stuff. There’s the acting side of all that, then there are so many songs. I have to keep my voice tight and right. That’s the difficulty - keeping myself on top form all the time so when I get out on stage I slay it. You played Angel in Rent so this isn’t your first time in heels, is it? No, it isn’t. [Laughs] The heels thing is a doddle now.

“This is a show for everyone, especially for today.” Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, but how would you sum it up? Jamie is based on a real character who was the subject of a documentary on BBC Three. I remember watching it years ago and it was about him wanting to be a drag queen and wanting go to the school prom in a dress and how his mum Margaret supported him. When he got there there was all this hoo-hah, the teachers wouldn’t let him in, then something wonderful and unexpected happened, his school mates refused to go in without him. Our story is about a 16-year-old boy who wants to be a drag queen and his relationship with his parents - including dad, who he isn’t in touch with. It’s about Jamie finding himself, his drag persona and what happens when he does go to the prom. What do you see as the key themes? It’s about acceptance. This is a show for everyone, especially for today. It’s not just for people who are into RuPaul’s Drag Race and stuff like that. The show is about a boy finding his path in life with the help of his close relationship with his incredible mum and her unconditional love for him. She loves him exactly as he is. A dad who isn’t supportive and lots of other characters that people will be able to relate to. There are so many relatable characters although if you identify with the dad then have a word with yourself! And there’s so much diversity in the cast. The real Jamie is white and I’m not, but that wasn’t even a question for the producers and creatives - which is so refreshing and so fab, like just ‘He’s right for the role’ and that’s how it should be. Oh, and there are high heels, high kicks, drag queens, beautiful dresses, feather boas, fantastic songs and brilliant dancing. It really is fun, funny and fabulous with a lump in your throat and a little tear. How important is the theme of inclusion to audiences both young and old? Very, I get messages from older people who have been helped by the show, whether it’s helped them come out or helped them understand their children better. It speaks directly to LGBTQ+ youth but it’s not

Do you know the real Jamie and have you based your performance on him? Yes, I know Jamie Campbell, he’s a really lovely guy. I rewatched the documentary once I got the part. There are a few things he does, like little dance moves, that I’ve put into the show. And with him as a person, I take some of his isms and personality traits. On the surface he might come across as someone who is really confident and fab and out-there, but as with lots of people you don’t really know what’s going on behind closed doors. There’s so much vulnerability to him. That’s something I don’t necessarily have myself. I try to stay as true to him and his story as I can because I want to do it justice. I want everyone who comes to see the show to not just get this fierce, fully-formed teenager who’s got everything sorted because then it’d be like ‘So what’s this story about?’ If I came out in the opening number And You Don’t Even Know It like ‘Bam! I’ve got this!’ then the audience would just go ‘He seems fine, what’s the point of the story?’ Does the show resonate for you on a personal level? Yes it does. I’m a queer boy from a council estate up North, so we have that in common. Me and my mum have had our moments in the past and sometimes on stage I’m thinking about the things we’ve been through. We always patch things up but families go through stuff. My upbringing wasn’t rosy. It’s not been the easiest ride but I put it into my art. What’s your favourite musical number in the show and why? And You Don’t Even Know It is fab because it’s the opening number and I get to sing and dance and do it all. Then I love the closing number Out Of The Darkness because I have my microphone in my hand and I feel like a real popstar. What are you most looking forward to about taking Jamie on tour? It’s about giving people the opportunity to see it who might not necessarily be able to because travelling to London is too expensive. When I was a musical-theatre-loving kid I couldn’t have afforded to get on a train and come to London. We’re bringing the show to a whole new audience and changing their opinions and perspectives and lives, hopefully. I know it sounds super-dramatic when you say it like that but we’re coming to their doorstep telling our story. It’s great that Shane Richie and Shobna Gulati from the West End cast are also with me. The tour calls at the Theatre Royal Brighton. Does it have any significance for you? I love being by the sea and Brighton Pride is one of my favourite Pride events. Hopefully there’ll be sunshine when we’re there and of course there are lots of lovely gays in Brighton so they’re gonna love the show. MON 6 APR - SAT 11 APR 2020 www.atgtickets.com
