PRIDE AT WORK

BIDS NOW OPEN FOR THE PRIDE SOCIAL IMPACT FUND ommunity groups and good causes across Brighton and C Hove are being invited to bid for grants to put Pride in our city. Now in its fifth year, the Pride Social Impact Fund ensures the positive contribution of the UK’s most popular LGBT celebrations continues year round. Applications for the 2019/20 pot are now open - and, thanks to the generosity of Pride attendees and local businesses, more than £30,000 is available to distribute to grassroots groups across Brighton and Hove who need a helping hand to support their work. Applicants just need to send proposals of up to 400 words for up to £1,000 of funding by midday on December 9 to Bhsocialimpactfund@gmail.com. Tim Ridgway, chairman of the Pride Social Impact Fund, said: "In just a few years the Pride Social Impact Fund has given dozens of grassroots groups across Brighton and Hove invaluable support, ensuring that Pride has a positive impact on residents across the city all year round. Thanks once again to the support of Pride attendees and local businesses I am delighted to say that this year we have an incredible £30,000 to distribute to good causes. So whether your idea is big or small, I urge groups across the city to submit their bids as soon as they can and look forward to being able to help some amazing grassroots groups put a little bit of Pride back into our city." Launched in 2016, the Pride Social Impact Fund has distributed nearly £80,000 to groups across the city so far. Projects put forward do not have to be LGBT related; they don't even have to be directly-linked to Pride (although applicants directly impacted will be favoured). However big or small, the only criteria is that it will brighten up people's lives by the time Pride comes round again next year. This year, more than £30,000 is available for groups to bid for. Funding comes from money raised through the LoveBN1 Festival in Preston Park and £7,520 from businesses within the Pride Village party, as well as £10,000 of unspent money from 2018/19. The application process for this year's fund is open now and bids will be considered by a panel made up of representatives from The Argus, BBC Sussex, Brighton & Hove News, Brighton & Hove Independent, Sussex Life, Latest magazine and Latest TV. Last year the panel handed out more than £45,000 to 40 community groups and charities across Brighton and Hove. One of those grants was £672 to provide matching kit complete with Social Impact Fund logo for the St Peter’s Womens and Girls Cricket Club. Bridget Allen, of the cricket club, said: “Thanks so much for sponsoring our women's cricket team with kit. Our first event was a 6 a side tournament against five other teams and we won. Having the smart kit has LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

“This year we have an incredible £30,000 to distribute to good causes” given the team great confidence and bolstered the team spirit.” The panel also awarded £500 to Community, Advice, Support and Education (CASE) to fund a science festival for dozens of families on low income in Hollingdean. Felton Shortall, of CASE, said: “We would like to thank Pride Social Impact Fund for the donation of £500 that has helped make this free event possible. It has given many families in our deprived neighbourhood the opportunity to have fun learning about science that they would otherwise not have been able to afford.” Another group to benefit was the Bees in the Woods Forest School, which received £960 to pay for isolated older people and their carers to attend forest school sessions along with under fives in Easthill Park in Portslade. When the project launched Simone Thorn, of Bees in the Woods, said: “It was a lovely opening with everyone involved and the very proud little Acorns were delighted at all the thanks and fuss they received from the Great Oaks. There was also woodland crafts, play in the mud kitchen and lots of chatter and smiles.” HOW TO APPLY The Social Impact Fund has been set up to provide small grants for communal good. Grants are awarded annually to organisations or groups within the city with particular emphasis on areas directly affected or in the footprint of Brighton and Hove Pride. Submissions should be a maximum of 400 words mapping out how the money will be spent and why the cause is deserving. Please note the maximum award will be £1,000. There is no lower limit. The panel also has the potential of awarding one or two larger grants of up to £10,000. These bids need to comprehensively meet the criteria, namely supporting good causes in areas directly impacted by Pride. There is no restriction on numbers of entries by individual groups. However, the emphasis is on supporting community and grassroots groups, rather than individuals. Please submit it by midday on December 9 by email to Bhsocialimpactfund@gmail.com. Applications will be considered by a panel of local media representatives with successful applicants informed by the end of December. Any money distributed needs to have had a visible outcome by the start of Pride 2020. 9

THE LANDLADY

RAINY DAZE here's nothing like returning to the UK after a month in far sunnier climes, to realise that Christmas is fast approaching, one of your lodgers has left without notice and according to the detritus floating in the gutter of your house, it hasn't stopped raining for weeks. I returned to the UK last Saturday via Dubai, where I attended an old friend's birthday party. I have to say, his party was much more impressive than my usual fiascos, which involve people of all ages falling about the place, then suffering for days afterwards. His neatly curated event involved a strict guest list, manicured lawns, mood lighting, a 'shwarma' man and a cocktail barman. My friend's dog, an innocent-looking rescue hound , whose fluffiness belies a vile temper and a propensity for biting all humans, had to be locked in an upstairs

T

“Thanks to the cocktail barman, most of the guests would not have cared if I'd claimed to be an unemployed serial killer”

Fortunately, thanks to the deft and unceasing hands of the cocktail barman, most of the guests would not have cared if I'd claimed to be an unemployed serial killer. Three days later and I'm sitting on my roof in central Brighton in the pouring rain, scooping out seagull excrement and animal bones from the gutter drainage hole. Furthermore, I am preoccupied about the state my vanishing tenant left his room in, and it will take more than a blast of febreeze to get rid of the stench of stale fags, booze and something worse… On a more pleasant note, The Big Daughter recently got engaged (her lucky fiancee has spent 6 years thawing out her frosty countenance) and we are to hold an engagement party at Landlady Towers two weeks from now. If only I had the space for a shwarma man…

bedroom. Otherwise, she'd have eaten, not only the shwarmas, but The shwarma man, his assistant and the cocktail barman. Even the guests were, without exception, a multicultural crowd of arty, well dressed and interesting people, most of whom worked for the forthcoming 'Expo 2020'. I mingled and tried not to make an arse of myself by moaning about being an unemp!oyed supermarket assistant.

seasoned greetings

Moshimo

C

hristmas is coming and the goose is getting… well perhaps not a goose, so many of us will be enduring the annual turkey fest. Frankly I prefer the trimmings to the main event, what is not to love about stuffing, sprouts and soldiers on horseback? But if Turkey is your thing then good health to you. The season of work parties is here too, and the city always has a wide range of options available, from festive fare in our many restaurants to themed, and no doubt, booze fuelled jollies in our bars and clubs. Our very own Latest Musicbar offers a wide range of events over the month, many now sold out but it’s always worth calling to seek last minute tickets. I am always torn when invited to large parties, being something of a culinary control freak I like to be in charge and once again at Latest I will be rolling up my sleeves and preparing a mainly plant based feast for my friends and colleagues. It’s something that I really enjoy!

Market Sussex produce simply delights. Their Christmas menu starts with some of those delicious tapa and then moves on to Serrano wrapped roast turkey, chorizo, pork and fig stuffing, crispy sobrasada brussels, honey roasted parsnips & carrots, duck fat potatoes & spiced red cabbage puree. Christmas pudding to top it off, now that does sound good and I am sure it will match in quality and generosity their first class Sunday roasts. 42 Western Rd, Hove BN3 1JD, United Kingdom 01273 823707 market-restaurantbar.co.uk If I do have to dine out with a large group then I will invariably suggest Carluccio’s, it always hits the spot, can cope with large parties and serves tasty dishes, take a look at my recent review of their seasonal menu! 1 Jubilee St, Brighton BN1 1GE 01273 690493 carluccios.com Finally a touch of spice, Chilli Pickle, a real favourite Chilli Pickle and the perfect foil to the turkey gobbling glut. Great for parties, delicious dishes to suit all tastes and excellent service too. I must pop in again very soon for the paneer mutter, my new fave! 17 Jubilee Street, Brighton BN1 1GE 01273 900383thechillipickle.com

“If turkey is your thing then good health to you” Out and about I am seeing Christmas menus everywhere, here are just a few suggestions of where to go. A firm favourite of mine in the city is Moshimo, I like going with friends of course but what really draws me back time and time again is that I can comfortably sit up against the conveyor and dine alone. There are far too few places that welcome lone diners and particularly at this time of year. The Moshimo Christmas menu is a lavish sharing offering of beautiful dishes and comes at a very sensible price. I spoke with the owners and they are very keen right now at moving towards offering real heartwarming an belly filling dishes and I raise my glass to that. Bartholomew Square, Brighton, BN1 1JS 01273 719195 moshimo.co.uk Market Restaurant in Hove is a firm favourite and that clever fusion, I sort of hate that word, but they make it work, of Spanish Tapas and
