EDITOR’S NOTE

O

h, how the months fly by! It’s almost time for the awesome cultural gem in Brighton’s crown that is Brighton Festival, once more. And talk of flight is evidently most appropriate; an avian motif floats ethereally throughout the program and this year’s themes are ‘Art and Nature’, ‘the crossing places between art forms,’ and ‘Taking Liberty’. The Times has described Brighton Festival as “a festival that makes connections with the real world,” and this year is set to raise the bar as high as years passed with author Ali Smith as seventh Guest Director. The program is inclusive, broad, interesting, firmly holding hands with both the realms of the speculative and conceptual, and the grounded and scientific. The Festival is now in its 49th year. We’ve a

comprehensive guide to the myriad delights of the Festival program on pages 12–13 ... start getting excited, and be sure to earmark the events that stick out for you, you don’t want to miss out. As proverb says, the early bird catches the worm. Up here in Latest Towers we have a figurative (and sometimes literal) bird’s eye view of all things Brighton – turn over for the latest news, comment, reviews, celebrity gossip, food and drink recommendations, and entertainment. Not to forget seven days of TV listings. Is that enough bird references for one column? It’s certainly a good way to eggcersize the imagination ... Brighton Tattoo Convention 2015

brighton tattoo convention 2015 The Brighton Tattoo Convention, after seven years of evolving into a premier international show, brought a burst of colour to the heart of the English winter with stellar tattoo artists, engaging entertainment, thoughtful workshops and exhibits, unique vendors, and a fun and lively atmosphere. For the first time since its first incarnation in 2008, the convention was held over three days, kicking off on Friday 20 February at 3pm and continuing all the way through to finish in the early hours of Monday morning. The tattooing, competitions, performances, seminars, workshops and gallery shows took place in the largest exhibition space in Southern England, the Hilton Brighton Metropole. Three-hundred-and-fifty world class artists from 16 countries, as far afield as Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Crotia, Poland, Scandinavia, Italy, Greece and the US were showcased, with a particular focus as well on fresh new talent from within the UK. In the spotlight were US big hitters Dan Smith, Megan Massacre, Bugs, Eric Gonzalez, BJ Betts and Big Meas. Newcomers were Greece’s Dirty Roses and Sake Tattoo Crew. Flying the flag for Great Britain, London’s Valerie Vargas and Stewart Robson brought their new studio, Modern Classic, down for the weekend. Up-and-coming artists included Math, Craig Ridley, Swambo, Kode and Ryan Evans. Adding to the excitement, the Godfathers of UK Tattooing Lal Hardy and George Bone were in attendance. Lal, as well as Adam Heys, offered workshops the first day of the convention, in addition to others sharing their expertise on tattoo history, art and culture. Keeping crowds entertained were live music legends The Meteors, The Sex Pistols Experience, King Salami and the Cumberland 3. Here’s hoping the convention grows exponentially – it’s a weekend not to be missed.

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat on working together The shift of power away from Westminster to our local areas is looking more likely than it has in a generation. Groups like Core Cities (the biggest nine cities in the UK) and Key Cities (the 25 mid-sized cities) are making big progress in shifting the debate after the shockwave that was the Scottish independence referendum. All parties are racing into the general election competing hard to offer the most in terms of devolution. The speed at which this may happen is astonishing. Greater Manchester, after a decade of slow but strong progress, has suddenly in four months won major new powers and £6 billion of NHS funding devolved locally. Bringing together in this way both council social care and NHS services is clearly the way to survive the growing demands of an ageing population. As one of the most centralised countries in the world, this slight loosening of the reigns by Whitehall is very welcome, if long overdue. To make the most of these opportunities in Greater Brighton (which covers Adur, Worthing, Mid-Sussex, Lewes, Brighton & Hove), we need to start work now, and we have. I was delighted when the Greater Brighton City Deal with government was formally signed early last year. It was the conclusion of almost a year's hard work and unlocked tens of millions of funding for vital projects across the city region. Business space, flood defences and ultrafast broadband were some of the many key projects which benefited. Since that deal was signed council, education and business leaders have been working together on the Greater Brighton Economic Board to deliver the investments promised. We can see the huge potential this way of working has to improve the quality of life, transport and economy for our citizens. It's been a big, positive change in how we work together.

THE VOTE

The failure to keep children safe in Rotherham has led to a fresh look at procedures in Brighton and Hove

Graham Bartlett, LSCB

hildren are almost certainly being sexually exploited in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding area. Accurate numbers are hard to come by. But after the many failures of the police, politicians, council officials, social workers and others in Rotherham, a great deal of work is taking place locally to apply the lessons. An overview of that work was due to be shared with the Brighton and Hove Community Safety Forum at Hove Town Hall yesterday (Monday). It included details of work carried out by Sussex Police just over a fortnight ago to strengthen officers’ knowledge and approach. The overview also covered Operation Kite which started in May last year. Members of the Community Safety Forum were told that Op Kite was “a Sussex police initiative around the reporting and identification of children and young people who are at risk of (child sexual exploitation)”. Police, social workers, head teachers, doctors and others hold a monthly Red Op Kite meeting to compare notes on who might be at

C

risk. They try to work out the best way of helping those young people identified as at high risk – those in the “red” category that gives Red Op Kite meetings their name. Much thought has been given to how best to bring together the professionals who deal with vulnerable children and young people. One answer is the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub – the MASH – in Brighton which has been running since September. It started with social workers and police working under the same roof, with health service staff due to join them. One of those charged with taking an overview is Graham Bartlett, the former Brighton and Hove police chief who chairs the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB). It is his job to identify any shortcomings across the area and to work out how to tackle them. Among the challenges facing Mr Bartlett and his colleagues is how

The programmes we have in place are effective but we will never become complacent. We can always do more. to share information about individual children and young people with hospital staff. There is a need to increase

awareness of children and young people who are already the subject of concern and who might turn up at a doctor’s surgery or a local hospital. They may show up drunk. They may have reacted badly to drugs or have taken an overdose. They may have harmed themselves. Children who have been sexually exploited may have mental or emotional as well as physical symptoms. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that Brighton and Hove is such a lovely place and so different to somewhere like Rotherham that it couldn’t happen here. But even in the past few weeks, efforts have been stepped up to identify and help boys and young men deemed to be potentially at risk of sexual exploitation. Mr Bartlett and Pinaki Ghoshal, executive director of children’s services at Brighton and Hove City Council, have also discussed children who run away or go missing. And how they may not necessarily stay in Brighton and Hove when they do, while others run away to Brighton from elsewhere. They are not just having to bring together different organisations but to work well with their counterparts in East Sussex and West Sussex and even London boroughs. Mr Bartlett said: “The LSCB is determined to work with all agencies and communities to ensure that the services provided to eradicate child sexual exploitation are easy to access, joined up and effective. “We know the damage these crimes do to young people so our approach to ensure we prevent those at risk falling victim, protect and support those already suffering and prosecute those who abuse others in this way needs to be co-ordinated at all levels and it’s the LSCB’s job to make sure that happens. “The programmes we have in place such as Red Op Kite are effective but we will never become complacent. We can always do more.” The report to the Community Safety Forum came two days after National Safeguarding Day on Saturday (28 February) when the aim was to raise the profile and improve the public understanding of the LSCB.

This week’s headlines from across the city

EYE MILESTONE The construction of the Brighton i360 reached a major turning point this week after a 25 metre high pile rig arrived on site at Brighton Beach. The 52-tonne rig will be used to put 10 to 20 metre long piles in the beach. This will then create a wall to hold back the shingle to make space for the foundations of the observation tower. The attraction is expected to open next summer.

NORTHERN LIGHTS OUT? It's long been a popular watering hole for those seeking something a little different. But Brighton's Scandinavian bar Northern Lights is in hot water. That's after officials claimed they were breaching licensing laws. The complaint, which will be discussed by councillors this week, says that there's too much ‘vertical drinking’ that goes on in

a pub which is supposed to be largely food led. But those at the bar have questioned the report, adding they had been largely trouble free seven years since opening. HOSPITAL VISIT Health secretary Jeremy Hunt was the latest high-profile politician to visit the city. His trip to the Royal Sussex County Hospital was designed to boost the campaign of Brighton Kemptown's Conservative MP Simon Kirby as he looks to defend his seat. But it also marked backing of the £420 million plans to bring the hospital into the 21st Century. And Latest TV was down there to capture it all on camera. VILLAGE PLEA For years it has been overlooked as investment poured into its seaside neighbours. But it appears the people of Lancing have had enough of Shoreham and Worthing taking all the limelight. A recent meeting in the village has led to local shops calling for a redesign of parking and other facilities in the high street. Traders hope that simple changes will make a massive difference to the area, which is currently dominated by charity shops.

WAGE CLAIM A Hove nursery has hit back at government officials. That's after minsters named and shamed them for not paying the minimum wage. But staff at the nursery just off Palmeira Square told Latest TV they had made an honest mistake. And instead they said it was up to officials to double check their facts before making such bold claims.

ON THE RISE Hundreds of people are turning to food banks in our city. That's the view of volunteers who are behind the groups. With the numbers now increasing from two to 13 in little over a year, it's clear there's an issue in the city which is not being addressed properly. As another food bank opened in Hove serving those who are hard-up in Hangleton, this was certainly backed up by those either helping or being helped. SEAGULLS ON THE UP It's been a good few weeks for the Albion. Since Chris Hughton came in as the Seagulls' manager, the boys in blue and white have slowly dragged themselves away from the dropzone. And in the latest press conference, Hughton said he was delighted with the way the team was responding to him. Latest TV is down at the press conference every week – so don't forget to check out www.thelatest.tv to see catch all the latest news from the Albion and elsewhere.

draw the curtain and peek out. I sheepishly open my window. Just a crack. I inhale deeply. A mixture of grass, rabbits and picnics hits my nostrils. I then open my eyes fully and look into the distance. Blue skies. Sun. Children playing. Hoses. Sprinklers. Bees. Oh no, trick of the light. Actually, there’s one! No – it was a wasp. Beethoven’s 6th blasts out from every tree, bird and flower. Well, this is a turn out for the books! Spring has begun! Spring, the season of birth, rebirth and Easter eggs. sometimes look at all the animals dining on these sweet, sugary reeds of deep green and have half a mind to get down on all fours and join them. In fact, if my stomach could handle it I probably would. I’m sure Bear Grylls and Ray Mears do it, so why can’t I? I was having a conversation with some friends recently and we were discussing things we did in our childhoods that we secretly all still wanted to do. The usuals came up; surplus amounts of fizzy pop, Quasar, bouncy castles, superhero themed parties. One friend still wished he wore a nappy. That was a lead balloon. However, the one idea that soared above the rest, a hot air balloon of consensus, catapulting every other idea into nothingness ... was the desire to still go on Easter egg hunts.

The excitement. The adrenaline. The rush! Every boy, girl, parent and grandparent trying to grab as many eggs as they possibly can. Running deranged around your best mate’s massive garden, eggs overflowing out of your mouth, pocket, down your pants, everywhere! You probably lost more eggs in your manic rush to get more than everyone else than you started with. The real winners were the parents, clearing up through the centre of the carnage. Gathering all the forgotten eggs throughout the middle of the hunt. And even after all was said and done. Every stone turned, every flowerpot flipped, every bush raided, every pet dissected and searched. Even after the entire garden had been stripped bare, you’re still out there, searching and searching, believing that there must be one last egg that everyone else has missed. And then you retire to the lounge, comparing your catch with your mates. Boasting about the different coloured foil. Who’s got the caramel one? Who’s got the praline? Trying to swap the dark chocolate ones. Playing with all the toys you might have won. And then the fatigue kicks in. You try to keep your eyes open, try with all your might to seal that deal with little Johnny – two white chocolate ... for his ... toy ... car ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. And you’re out. After a valiant day, heroes are made, allegiances formed, legends begun. The Easter egg hunt is more than just a childish past-time. It’s a time to show what you are made of to your fellow man. A time to shine. A time to gorge on your spoils. A time to stand up and be counted. And as you drift effortlessly into your deep sleep you hear Beethoven’s 6th oozing surreptitiously out from somewhere in the garden ...

a good example. I wrote that blog a couple of days after my BGT audition, but it was the Saturday afterwards (I auditioned on the Wednesday) that I crashed. Not mentally, thankfully, but physically. I was so exhausted. A tiredness that I hadn’t experienced before. Utterly broken. And thinking back, it was a punishing day. I had nine hours of intense interviews, staged pieces to camera, chats with producers, chats with other contestants (my favourite bit) and a lot of sitting around. Just sitting and waiting. And when my moment came, it was over in seconds. The judges took one look at me, heard my voice (it was awful) and decided that they wanted to go home and would, by coincidence, also be sending me in that direction. Now I’d gone in as a character, ‘Vince Venus’, and there were two

reasons for this; self-preservation and comedy value. If I acted the twat and came across as a twat, then it’s Vince’s fault, not mine. I didn’t see this as a career opportunity. A record contract was never going to happen. I already have my dream job. Did I want to raise my profile? Of course I did. At every opportunity. But I’ve been watching the show for years and I knew what I was letting myself in for. I knew I was at the hands of Cowell and his evil empire. But I also knew the opportunity to mince around on stage in a catsuit in front of a potential national audience was too good to turn down. I simply had to do it. It’s a similar feeling when I walk into a karaoke bar – I have to get up and sing. It’s in the blood. As a performer, though, it does hurt to have someone tell you to get off stage. Especially after fifteen seconds (a record according to Ant ’n Dec). Ask any comedian, actor, compere, etc – it’s your worst nightmare. It’s a kick in the egotistical balls. But that’s the nature of the show and I left with grace and a smile on my face. As I mentioned previously, if you’re going to fall, fall spectacularly. Notice I use the word fall, rather than fail. It’s just one letter of difference, but I don’t believe in failure. I don’t do failure. It’s a terrible word that should be banished from the English Dictionary. I didn’t fail on Britain’s Got Talent. I had a ball, despite some of the things I’ve mentioned previously. It was a great experience, and I hope you get to see my balls (it was a very tight catsuit) on national TV soon.

I have to get up and sing. It’s in the blood ...

t’s been a bit of a process, as they say in the world of therapy, this whole Britain’s Got Talent thing. I’m usually allowed 450 words in the magazine columns that I write, but with the first blog I wrote on the whole experience that was nowhere near enough, and I found myself writing over a thousand in the end. It can be a cathartic experience, blogging, and this was

he culmination of an incredible two-year photographic project, FlipSide brings some of the world’s biggest DJs and producers out from behind the decks and reveals them as you've never seen them before. Featuring subjects including Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Goldie, Paul Oakenfold, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Judge Jules, Example, Orbital, Shy FX, Jaguar Skills, Boy George, DJ Fresh and many more, this unique body of work is the brainchild of renowned photographer Jessica van der Weert. Debuting in London, the solo show will then travel to other areas of the globe including LA, Berlin and Ibiza. Van der Weert unveils this celebration of the world of dance music at London’s Hoxton Gallery on 27 February 2015. While some works feature global music heavies in their other favourite places – Carl Cox doing burnouts in his Lotus, Goldie covered in paint in his studio – others feature superstar DJs re-enacting their fantasies, aided by Jessica’s imagination and creative eye, such as Boy George dressed in full combat gear amidst clouds of purple smoke re-enacting a scene from Platoon. The results are a breath of fresh air.

Revealing personalities and interests beyond anything the public has seen before, Jessica’s collection is genuinely unique. FlipSide aims to raise awareness for the British Tinnitus Association (BTA), an organisation that supports people with the debilitating hearing condition that affects almost 10% of UK adults, and which affects many DJs. FlipSide runs from 27 February – 4 March at Hoxton Gallery, 9 Kingsland Road, London, E2 6AA. Gallery Hours: Mon–Sat 11am–7pm, Sunday 12–6pm.

ANYTHING GOES! he Theatre Royal Brighton is proud to announce that English Touring Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of A Mad World My Masters will run from Tuesday 10 – Saturday 14 March. This riotously funny farce, originally written in the 1600s, has been reimagined and relocated to the Soho of the 1960s. In this atmosphere of ‘anything goes’, the posh mix with musicians, whores and racketeers, and a charming yet penniless bachelor in need of quick cash and a good time has to live on his wits. The notorious characters play along to the sounds of BB King, Billie Holliday and Ray Charles numbers throughout, performed live on stage. The playlist to the show includes ‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business’, ‘Let The Good Times Roll’, ‘Please Love Me’ and ‘Cry Me a River’. A Mad World My Masters is directed by Sean Foley, whose extensive credits include Jeeves & Wooster In Perfect Nonsense, which previewed at the Theatre Royal Brighton in 2013 before enjoying a hugely successful run in the West End. Variously described by national reviewers as “disgracefully entertaining,” “deliriously funny” and “wonderful, filthy fun”, Brighton audiences will love this play. With tickets from as little as £10 across all performances, this is a rare opportunity to see the work of two of the country’s leading theatre companies perform at the Theatre Royal Brighton. Creating a new sculptural work in his tenure as this year’s HOUSE 2015 invited artist, Nathan Coley takes the social history of local architecture as a starting point to explore ideas of unrest, the monumental and absence, edge and shift, portraiture and representation, space and occupation in post-modern society. 2–24 May, Regency Town House, free DAWN CHORUS British artist Marcus Coates explores the relationship between birdsong and the human voice – drawing out similarities between the behaviour of birds and humans – in an immersive multiscreen film installation featuring 19 individual singers who uncannily recreate birdsong and bird movement. We are food lovers, and are very demanding with everything we offer. It's hard work, but also very motivating to see people enjoy themselves and leave with a big smile! Mum is the patisser, dad is the baker and my brother and myself are serving our clients. I am surprised to see how friendly and polite people in Brighton are – we must have the nicest clients in town, and that adds to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.”

s a massive fan of the Brighton Festival it was a delight to attend the press launch of this year’s programme, which was hosted by Chief Executive Andrew Combden, an eloquent speaker, and guest director Ali Smith. Ali Smith is passionate, charming and self effacing – and clearly fun. The assembled warmed to her presentation, her enthusiasm, her delicate wit and her winning smile – I know I did. It was clear that having been invited to be guest director, and realising the scale of the job, she has thrown herself fully into the role and in doing so has thoroughly enjoyed it – and plans to be here throughout to continue enjoying the experience. One thing she was determined to get across was the excellence of the entire festival team, their

LGBTEDIOUS

An exciting and inclusive programme for the Brighton Festival 2015 enthusiasm, knowledge and professionalism. She is certainly not one for claiming the glory and that I admire. Once the presentation had been made there was an opportunity to ask questions. I am not one for joining, preferring to ask my questions in private and then be the only person to have that specific response – but I do like to listen, well normally I do. On this occassion I was infuriated by one question that came from a London-based gay magazine. He asked why an arts festival based in a city with so large an LGBT community was not reflecting this in the programming. Now as an openly gay adult I find this more than a little depressing, in the same way that I feel when asked to recommend a gay restaurant or a gay lawyer – a request that I usually reject, saying that surely they would rather I recommend a good restaurant or the best lawyer. My reason for this is that for so many years, so many gay people have campaigned for equality and for acceptance. In many ways much of what we had hoped for has been achieved, but there is still work to be done. For me, equality and acceptance

Ali Smith is passionate, charming and self effacing – and clearly fun meant not having to build my society in a ghetto. Oh I know that there is a place for a ghetto, a safe place for people who are not ready to come completely out, that should go without saying. What I am really saying is that I don’t think I need to be coralled into a gay section of an arts festival, as my sexual preferences really do not influence my cultural tastes to that kind of extreme. If you choose what you like to see based on sexual preference then that is your choice, but in my sense of equality that is a redundant motivation. Ali Smith dealt with it with disarming charm and pointed out that perhaps when the questioner had had a chance to give the programme a thorough read, he would see that there was more than

a smattering of participants and events that were coming from or representing LGBT interests. I am aware that I may sound unsupportive of the LGBT community, but I can assure you that I am not. I am simply astonished that in 2015 there are people out there in the media who wish for this kind of separatism, apartheid even. I embrace society as a whole human being, not as an outcast who needs to cushion my world by padding it with culture from a sector defined by sexual preference. To the man from the smoke I say this, and please forgive the vulgarity and stereotyping – Brighton Festival is an arts festival not an arse festival!

SMOKIN’ A tasty lunch at the Chimney House ’m always envious of you Brighton and Hove residents that have a good place to eat on your doorstep, and if that offends any that are close to my home then I apologise. When I lived in Kemp Town I was spoiled for choice within minutes of my home and now I feel that I have few choices close enough to walk to with ease. That of course could be due to laziness on my part, which in turn I will blame on my fluctuating bouts of gout. I will put a word in here for The Hartington pub which is but a short step away, and where I have enjoyed a decent Sunday roast. I like it too because it still has the feel of a pub and seems to eschew the term ‘gastro’. The reason I bring this up is a recent visit to The Chimney House, which sits firmly in the residential district just north of Seven Dials that I know as Porthall. It went foodie some time back, run well by two rather smart young women. It then passed into the hands of Andrew Coggings who gave it the Preston Park Tavern touch of success. He has since moved on to make and sell rather exceptional burgers at Seven Dials. I say this because a recent visit proved this to be still true, and whilst so many places claim to serve “the best burgers” in the city, my vote goes to Coggings and Co for a sit down experience and to Burger Brothers for a stand up or carry out burger blow-out. Back to Chimney House and a cold February day, to be precise my birthday, and a lunch with Mr M. I had left myself hungry in anticipation, Mr M was less in need and went for just a main course. I of course had my hungry head on and was

drawn, as ever, to a dish of pig’s head. Now I love pig’s head in its many forms, from brawn to this incarnation as a well picked croquette. Ignoring the fact that it came on a slate style plate, not my favourite tableware, I loved it. The meat was cleanly picked and lean, the crumb was crisp and it came with haws and hazelnuts that added crunch and sourness and shards of crispy pig skin. Very tasty and very satisfying. Mr M meanwhile chose the vegetarian tasting plate which arrived looking really splendid. It boasted turnip and malt, cottage cheese, carrot cooked in whey, pickles, woodruff gel, kale fritter, sour cream with garlic capers and sourdough bread. Quite an array and much of it was very tasty indeed, although we both felt that the kale was a litle too well done and neither of us liked the woodruff gel – a forage too far perhaps. The jury was out on the malt soil but all in all it was a dainty dish to set before the Queen (no reference to myself or Mr M, just a literary affectation – honest!). As it was my birthday and as I like a nice bit of meat I had no hesitation in ordering the salt beef. I love this modest cut when it is well prepared

and I have to say that this was exemplary. The meat was well seasoned, and moist, but it was the well judged mustard element that made it shine. The pressed potatoes on the side were great too and the slippery onions, heartwarmingly yummy wintery food. I was very happy. Neither of us had appetite left for desserts but spotting the offer of affogato we changed our minds, pudding and coffee in one. I went for classic and loved it. The quality of the ice-cream used was stunning, almost buttery in texture. Mr M went for an After Eight ice-cream topped with espresso and he loved it. It sounds awful to me as After Eights make me feel queasy, like eating chocolate filled with toothpaste. On the whole we both enjoyed Chimney House – and our chat with the chef, loved the beers, and I had a sneaky Blackdown G&T before Mr M arrived made with a quality tonic water too. Well it was my birthday after all! Chimney House, 28 Upper Hamilton Road Brighton, BN1 5DF, 01273 556708 www.chimneyhousebrighton.co.uk

island heavyweights

unlocking potential

wine expertise from stephen Quinn

News and chat from the frontline of science and technology at PACA

T 

he island of Madeira is revered worldwide for the wine named after it. Madeira is tiny: only 57 kilometres wide and 23 kilometres long. The landscape is steep, and rises swiftly from sea level to cloudcovered peaks of about 1,800 metres. Blandy’s and Justino’s are the heavyweights among the island’s seven producers. They make more than half of the madeira. Madeira is unique in the way it is made and stored. The winemaking process is an accident of history. Grape brandy was added to preserve wines on long sea journeys. During the seventeenth century, winemakers discovered the positive influence of the sun on wine shipped through the tropics. Intense heat gave a light and acidic wine depth of flavour and a pleasant burnt quality. Madeira was subsequently stored in the holds of ships as ballast and send on round-trip journeys to develop flavours. This wine became known as vinho da roda, or “wine of the round voyage”. Nowadays that process is replicated by storing wines in hot locations. Most wine regions mature their wines in cool cellars, whereas Madeira wants to keep its wines warm. Part of the process is known as estufagem, “heating” in English, where pipes or jackets heat wine in tanks to develop flavours. Justino’s uses solar heating for the bulk of its 4,500 barrels and hopes soon to use solar for all heating. Justino’s has the largest holdings of madeira on the island, and makes some superb wines. Julio Fernandes, commercial director, provided samples of 16 wines at the company’s headquarters near Funchal, the capital. These were a revelation for the purity and freshness of the younger wines to the elegance of the 10-year-old madeira, through to the superb colheitas of 1995, 1996 and 1998. Colheitas come from a single year, but unlike vintage madeiras do not need to age for 20 years before being released. “These wines provide high quality wine from a single outstanding year but at an affordable price,” Fernandes said.

very year the UK faces a shortfall of over 81,000 people with engineering skills. In the energy sector in particular, many of the experienced engineers and scientists are retiring. Hence the STEM (Science, Engineering and Maths) LATESTwrites Technology, agenda. However, as stated by Erik Bonino, the chairman of Shell UK, the STEM agenda has grown into myriad projects, with multiple goals and multiple partners, and this scattergun approach isn’t working. He believes that business, government and the engineering community need to stop launching STEM programmes in isolation and instead co-ordinate their efforts. Incidentally, here at PACA’s STEM centre we have signed up to an energy project with EDF Energy. And this begins to shed light on the heart of the matter: privatisation. The engineers and scientists who are either retired or soon to retire, worked under a government where services were public and centralised. There were various national research laboratories such as It is vital that profits those for British Rail, British Steel and the Central Electricity from privatised Generating Board (CEGB). My father worked for the CEGB and companies are he was a Chartered Electrical diverted back into Engineer. His degree and training was paid for by the education CEGB and he was a student apprentice, training within the power stations themselves. These days, UK companies expect a conveyor belt of graduates ready with all of the technical skills, which usually take a number of years to perfect by working in industry. The demise of the UK’s national research laboratories is seen, by many, as a huge tragedy. It is vital that profits from privatised companies are diverted back into education and research for a centralised STEM programme. As said by Bonino, “the UK’s approach to STEM uses an inefficient delivery model and delivers a poor return on investment. No viable business would run its operations in such a manner”. Money is getting stuck in quango organisations and empty PR box ticking exercises, rather than going directly to equipping our children with the necessary skills, education and opportunities needed for the 21st century.

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

FILM Jessica Kellgren-Hayes

THE CREATIVE GENERATION

alling all students! This is a student announcement! (Please now imagine I am standing atop a soap box or similar holding a megaphone). Are you a budding filmmaker? Have you been making films since before you knew how to text properly? Do you have a filmography as long as Mickey Rooney? … If you just had to Google him, then we’re going to need to have a talk. Equally, did you only last year start recording films? Are you an animator who has only very recently put your designs to motion? Well, I’m interested in hearing from you as well! On 22 March, FilmFest will be screening a very special episode dedicated to films from students. Submit your film/s by 8 March for a chance to be involved. We are the generation that has grown up with the ability to make films at our fingertips; our phones all have a camera, and easy editing software is available for free on various app platforms. I am not in any way saying that every video clip out there is an artistic marvel; it would take over 1,000 years to watch every video currently on YouTube – how many gems can there be?! But I know from experience that talented filmmakers are often overlooked due to their age, or lack of qualifications or experience. You don’t have to be in film school or even studying a film-related course, and there is no age limit, so mature students can also get involved. All I ask is that you are currently in education, over the age of 16 and that the film is 12 minutes or under. The films we are looking at can be surrealist masterpieces or tell a narrative sweetly and succinctly in just a few minutes. Send an email with the title, running time, synopsis and a link to the film online (that can be to an unlisted YouTube video, you don’t have to put it out there for the world to see) to Jessica@thelatest.tv TV is a great way of gaining exposure for your work: in the UK, the number of views for feature films on television is twenty two times higher than the number of cinema tickets sold! Most filmmakers start out making short films as shorts are a great way to explore one's creativity and develop a style. Your film doesn't have to be perfect and it doesn't have to be made with a huge budget; we want to see your creativity and style. I look forward to watching your film!

BRINGING THE PAST TO LIFE

e love the boys at Zimmer Stewart Gallery in Arundel. And if you haven’t discovered the allure of this delightful artspace on Tarrant Street, there’s no better time to head over than now. The March exhibition, Tom Farthing ‘Projections by Tom Farthing’, is an utter treat, and the artist truly fascinating. The starting points for his paintings are found (mainly American) Kodachrome slides, which he then reimagines placing the human figure in a contemporary context. These intriguing portraits capture a response to the past, but at the same time are concerned with projecting possible narratives and alternative realities ‘Tomorrow Has Passed’ for today. It’s the artist’s way of holding a mirror up to society, as he imagines a way forward for painting among the fast-paced, image-saturated contemporary world. Mesmerising stuff. From 6–28 March. Closer to home, a bittersweet melancholy haunts the new exhibition at One Eyed Jack’s gallery, ‘Tomorrow has Passed’, which has been woven by guest curator Mark Peter Drolet – an avid Tumblr user who set out to make ‘new and interesting associations’. Far from traditional photographic portraits, each work contains a figure (or figures) gazing out of the image or without a face at all. Despite the strong contemporary feel, the works evoke narratives of days gone by, celebrating a chromatic nostalgia for a photographic past. Head to York Place and have your thoughts provoked. Don’t miss: There’s still time to submit your photographs of the city to the FotoDocument/One Planet City photography competition. Its theme is sustainability, and the challenge is to create a photograph that reflects the people, landscape and character of Brighton and Hove, such as Amanda Jackson’s ‘The Dirty Beaches, Sustainable Materials’ featured here. You’ll find more info at photodocument.org. www.artymagazines.com

Anna Westlake, David Partridge and Tom Hackney. Following highly successful tours in 2012 and 2014, the production will begin another UK tour later this month. COMEDY

MARCH ON! Easter’s around the corner, but there’s lots before to see ...

T

here are daffodils poking their heads up and Easter eggs in the shops – which means it’s bound to snow any minute now. Actually, it also means that the winter blues are making way for spring’s optimism, and that as comedy shows were thinner on ground throughout January and February as people recovered from Christmas (ages ago!) there’s a bit more going on to tickle your laughter-gullet from here on in. This week alone sees Richard Herring at the Komedia with his acclaimed show ‘Lord Of The Dance Settee’, plus Mark Thomas over at the Corn Exchange with his remarkable ‘Cuckooed’ show about discovering one of his best friends was actually a spy sent to gather info on what he was up to. Spooky! Next week it’s worth making a date in your diary with ‘Gittins To Know You’, over at Sticky

Mike’s Frog Bar. An evening of mayhem hosted by anti-comedy legend Brian Gittins whose headline slots in the past have included Al Murray, Harry Hill and Adam Riches, plus an array of rather brilliant local support acts. Top of the bill this month is Nick Helm – with Mae Martin and Ed Aczel also on board. As a little-known night about to explode, this is a secret it’s worth being in the know about. Not forgetting, coming up the tail end of the month, Count Arthur Strong returning to his natural live performance abode in the Theatre Royal Brighton. The Count’s BBC sitcom has been storming it, but he’s back in the live arena with this show; ‘Somebody Up There Licks Me’, on Sunday 29 March. Plus John Bishop has tagged on an extra date to his ‘Supersonic’ tour with a return to Brighton for one night only, and Jimmy Carr’s in town knocking those tastequestioning one-liners out of the park. So, all in all, March is waking up in terms of comedy. Hurrah for those fab daffodils! THE UNTHANKS The folk-based phenomenon are back in town with a fantastic new album to sing about, as Jeff Hemmings explores

T

he Unthanks, sisters Rachel and Becky, were at the outset an almost purely traditional folk outfit, re-arranging and covering songs written by persons unknown and largely steeped in the history of Northumbria. Their debut album Cruel Sister displayed their tremendous abilities and passion and was eventually awarded Folk Album of the Year by Mojo. Over the years The Unthanks, along with long-time producer (and husband to Rachel Unthank) Adrian McNally, haven't pandered to the purity of folk music, branching out to include the sisters’ love of all kinds of modern music. The Bairns, whilst still steeped in traditional music, had a cinematic quality that was timeless and became a bigger commercial success than the debut, while the follow up album, Last, continued on that adventurous trajectory, although traditional folk remains at the heart of their voices: “It's not a dirty word anymore,” says Rachel. “I remember five years ago seeing a slogan: ‘folk is the new disco’. You know what? I knew it would

be fashionable again if I waited long enough! Pop songs have been taking on the vernacular of folk – guitars and fiddles – it’s definitely more in people’s consciousness, and it’s alright to be into it.” Between that album and the recently released fourth album, Mount The Air, they issued three further albums under the Diversions name, recordings that are based on other people’s songs such as Robert Wyatt and Anthony & The Johnsons, and re-workings of their own material with the likes of the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band. And they continue to organise their own singing weekends and collaborate with other artists. From playing purely folk-only clubs in their native north-east to hitting the big time nationally and

internationally, their audiences have broadened out, enamoured and fascinated by these siblings who, despite their seven year age gap, can sing in perfect unison, their distinctive voices telepathically complementing each other and imbibing their chosen material with a deep mesmerising sadness and earthy melancholy. The fact that they indulged in a bit of clog dancing on stage only helped their cause further. Although many of the lyrics in Mount The Air are based on traditional songs, the music is of a more contemporary, classicalmeets-folk-jazz fusion, largely written by McNally. The sisters also, for the first time, bring pen to paper to write their own lyrics, a highlight being the Portisheadesque ‘Life’s A Flutter’. “Flutter has just been playlisted for 6Music, very exciting – it’s the first time we’ve been playlisted by them.” The Unthanks say Mount The Air is an invitation to be free and weightless, to transcend reality and enter your imagination. It does that, and more. Brighton Dome, Wed 4 March, 7.15pm, £20/17.50

MICHAEL FLATLEY IN LORD OF THE DANCE

Brighton Centre, 2 April 2015, from £40, 0844 847 1515, www.brightoncentre.co.uk Michael is performing at only three venues in Britain and two in Ireland so this is an incredible opportunity to see the legendary Irish dancer perform.

D

espite having read the novel, this stage version of the Peter James novel managed to keep me gripped. Cleverly lifting crime fiction from page to stage is no mean feat and here the company do it with a razor sharp edge. A decent set manages the changes of scene well but at the end of the day it has to be down to a great story being delivered by a compelling cast. As a fan of the Roy Grace series I found Gray O’Brien's portrayal a little too chipper, lacking the sadness of the character, and Marc Small as Branson is not as cool as the person I read. Tina Hobley though is wonderfully evil when all is revealed and Jamie Lomas adds a real sense of desperation. Finally Josh Brown’s Davey Wheeler is superbly realised, the real highlight of the production, with an utterly believable performance that prompts comedic relief and genuine sadness. A thriller to be sure.

THE PROCLAIMERS

"What's the name of this show?" asked Simon Munnery of an enraptured audience who'd presumably all paid to be there. "Show And Tell!" came the confident reply from a lady in the third row. "That's the name of the promoter, my dear," retorted Simon. Commence much embarrassed fumbling in pockets for ticket stubs and you'd be forgiven for thinking that the audience in near entirety had shown up to the wrong performance. Nope … turns out, nobody knows

THE DECEMBERISTS

Colin Meloy stepped out onto an empty stage, acoustic guitar in hand. Bathed in light he alone sang ‘We know, we know, we belong to you,’ and one by one the band joined him as the sound built into a rousing opener. These vaudevillian troops have drawn influences from the baroque, Appalachian folk, and progressive styles on songs like ‘The Island’ and ‘Caroline Folk’ to the uplifting Radio 6 favourite ‘Make You A Better’. We were divided and conducted in a sing off on ‘Sixteen Military Wives’, then required to shriek on the melodramatic ending of ‘The Mariners' Revenge', quickly descending into chaos, ending with all the performers tied up in tape playing dead. Wow! The Dome, 20 February 2015 ★★★★★ Adrian Day

much about Soren Kierkegaard. Merging revealing, animated diary snippets for the sake of the uninitiated with delicious aphoristic revisitations for existing philosophy buffs, this show hit the mark at every level. Fantastic. My only complaint is that Simon didn't play his ukulele. The Old Market, 11 February 2015 ★★★★★ Louise Bevan

The premise for this improvcomedy troupe's show is to take a topic suggested by the audience (‘revenge of the younger sister’ in this instance) and turn it into an amusing Austen-like tale, in the garb and parlance of the times. All five performers exuded a natural sense of humour and quick wit, verbally sparring with each other in scenes that were absurd, but not too absurd, improvised and ramshackle, but not rudderless or meandering. An hour flew by, with hilarious jokes such as a surly priest bombarded with forestry miscellany, running nuns and even a genuinely funny walk. Frenetic, intelligent, riotous fun.
