THE GRAND HOTEL

elcome to A Grand Place to Work. The £5 million revamp of the iconic Grand Hotel, Brighton, on the seafront is nearly finished, and we find out what the refurbishment means to the staff at the Grand, as well as the people of Brighton. This week, Latest 7 hears from Concierge Dave Clarke. “I used to be a mixologist at The Victoria Bar, but The Grand felt that in light of the refurbishment there was a call for an increased concierge team and I jumped at the chance to be involved, as I love customer service. Everyone knows that The Grand always goes that extra mile. We are constantly striving to go the extra inch too, as it is the little everyday touches that really do mean a lot to our guests. “My day starts when I put on my uniform, I wear the traditional concierge attire: black shoes (which are impeccably polished), tailored black trousers with a satin ribbon trim along the sides. The shirts are white, with a navy and silver tie and a waistcoat. I always leave the bottom button undone on my waistcoat;

apparently that was started in the 1800’s by King Edward VII. The story goes that he forgot to do the last button up once by accident when dressing, but it was copied and became fashionable and is still tradition today. Only Colin – the Head Doorman – wears a top hat though. “We want to offer bespoke service for every customer, and that’s a large part of my job. I always try to remember that whoever I greet at the front door may have perhaps been stuck in traffic for hours, or have been looking forward to this day for

months. It’s the personal touches like finding out what time people check in and making sure I know their names when they arrive, or taking heavy bags off a mum so she can get her kids out of the car. Our valet parking service is always greatly appreciated too! I try to anticipate what the guests will need before they even know it themselves! We’re lucky that we have many loyal customers who visit time and time again, so it’s easy to build up a really good relationship with guests. “As part of the concierge team, we help and run errands for guests and hotel visitors, but it is also our job to advise and recommend on what to do and see in Brighton, although due to the refurbishment and the opening of GB1 (the new seafood restaurant in the hotel) when it comes to recommending a great place to have cocktails or a fantastic restaurant, there really is little need to look any further. “The recent refurbishment means that the hotel has

05

been renovated to such a high standard, it makes us extremely proud to be part of The Grand team. It really is an honour to work in such an opulent and iconic hotel, but I would say that we aren’t intimidating, everyone feels welcome here. “My favourite memory of working here is when a wedding party stayed. I had just come off duty and the bridesmaids were waiting outside the hotel in their heels and their dresses for a taxi, which hadn’t showed up. They were very upset and worried they would miss the ceremony, so I put them all in the back of my car and drove as fast as I could to the church in Hove, getting them there just in time. I may have gone through a few amber lights... Needless to say the bride and groom were delighted, as was The Grand! When children abuse parents A mother tells her story & speaks in support of research being led by Brighton University into a little-understood problem. Frank le Duc reports the big issue

A

mother of two has spoken about her despair as her 13year-old son turned violent. Jane (not her real name) said that her son shouted at her, threatened her, stole from her and became physically violent. She described feeling scared and helpless – and worried about the effect that it was having on her daughter. Jane also praised a project being run in Brighton called Break4Change. It aims to help children who are violent and abusive towards their parents and carers. At the same time the project supports those parents and carers too. Jane said: “This all started when my son was 13. It manifested in lots of shouting, smashing things, taking my bag, threatening to break things, threatening behaviour, physical violence, smashing parts of the house and being very out of control. “This just got worse and worse. All the boundaries I had been using before just were not working. There were problems at school and he wasn’t getting the support he needed there. “He started to run away from home and I had to phone the police. This was very tiring, very stressful, very

frightening and very worrying for me as a mother and, as a result, I had very low self-esteem. “I was so worn out that I didn’t look after myself properly and it was also affecting my daughter. Other parents who haven’t experienced this don’t understand. You feel so crap at the school gates.

“Then a Young Offenders Project worker visited and talked to us about Break4Change and this has since been a major influence. He was straight talking with both of us and supportive. “My son and I attended the Break4Change programme – I don’t think it would work properly if we hadn’t both gone together. He didn’t feel he was being sent to the programme as the ‘bad boy’ and it showed him that I loved him. “Talking helped a lot, as did meeting other parents who had the same level of behaviour going on in their lives. The alienation and stigmatisation dropped because you were among people with similar experiences. I was not patronised or

demonised as the bad parent – they were kind and accepting and made us feel we were not horrible and that there was a way forward.” Jane said that the Break4Change programme encouraged parents to adjust their responses, to say no and stick to it and to not be afraid to call the police. It looked at how to choose the right moment to speak to a child to avoid arguments. She said that her son still had tantrums but added that his

vulnerable in our city. Councils can do nothing about changes like the ‘bedroom tax’ and benefit cap – they’re imposed by Westminster. But we do know they will have a huge impact on our communities. For example the ‘bedroom tax’ means a reduction in benefits paid to families in council or social housing thought to have ‘excess' space. About 1,600 households will be affected, two thirds of which are a home for someone with a disability. These changes are likely to increase homelessness and family troubles. These are not only personally devastating to those involved; they are incredibly costly

for all public services and charities trying to help those who sadly find themselves in trouble. Despite budget cuts, we’re committed to softening the blow as best we can. With a modest 1.96 per cent council tax increase we can put £300,000 into supporting hard-pressed advice services at the Citizens Advice Bureau and Brighton Housing Trust. We're creating a £600,000 fund to help those worst affected by benefit cuts and supporting the local credit union and other partners with the creation of local community banking facilities to help those struggling financially. We can’t reverse all the government’s work. But I hope all councillors will support our budget proposals to help those most in need.

Brighton University into children who are violent towards their parents and how best to handle it. She said: “If this can open up discussions to look at prioritising funding to support programmes similar to the Break4Change programme then it will absolutely be worthwhile.” The university has won a € 751,000 (£641,000) grant to study what academics have descried as the emerging problem of violent attacks by children on their parents and carers. Uncertain responses Dr Wilcox said: “Existing literature identifies that it is mainly mothers who experience it and mainly adolescent boys who perpetrate it, as well as links with domestic violence. But both areas are underresearched and, due to the lack of evidence-based guidance, practitioners are often unsure how to respond to this issue. “As a result, many young people who perpetrate [child to parent violence] are not identified until they come into contact with the criminal justice system, entailing severe social costs for the family and high financial costs for the government.” Dr Wilcox said that the project would assess the effectiveness of two existing models of intervention. One is Break4Change in Brighton and Hove and the other is known as non-violent resistance. The use of non-violent resistance in five European countries – Britain, Ireland, Spain, Sweden and Bulgaria – will be studied. She said that Break4Change was a specialist intervention programme in Brighton and Hove with parallel

Researchers stressed that violence inflicted by parents on children is more common and work also needs to be done with regard to parenting.

involved young teenage boys and girls who use physical or psychological abuse to gain power, usually over their mothers. University academics will support the research project on child to parent violence which was originally initiated by the specialist Brightonbased domestic violence organisation Rise. The research will look at how countries across Europe handle the problem of child to parent violence. The aim is to provide a toolkit for experts and to increase awareness in the wider community in Britain. The research is being led by Paula Wilcox, principal lecturer in the university’s School of Applied Social Science. She said: “This problem is rarely articulated in government policy and it remains a taboo subject that parents and carers find difficult to disclose. We know that Spain has conducted more work on this issue and as a result seen an increase in reports by parents and carers.” Child to parent violence is defined as “any act of a child that is intended to cause physical, psychological and financial damage to gain power and control over a parent and/or carer”.

groups for parents and young people. It helps children to share, to learn and investigate their reactions and responses. They learn techniques to cope better with emotions and emotional literacy. Non-violent resistance is an approach for parents who are trying to respond to violent or abusive children and one to one. Dr Wilcox said that the research partnership had been selected to reflect a wide range of expertise in dealing with child to parent violence. It also reflected the geographical and cultural diversity across Europe. The university’s research partners include Brighton and Hove City Council, the National University of Ireland (Galway), the Instituto de Investigacion Polibienestar at the Universitat de Valencia in Spain, the National Association XXI Century Rhodopa Mountain Initiative in Bulgaria and Amal Municipality in Sweden. The National University of Ireland is to provide training in the non-violent resistance programme targeting experts who are trying to help parents living with child to parent violence.

Councillor Sue Shanks, who chairs Brighton and Hove City Council’s Children and Young People Committee, said: “Child to parent violence is unacceptable and deeply worrying so it is vital that we look at all good practice to find out what we can do to help prevent it. “As a council, we already run innovative and targeted schemes. This is a great opportunity to further develop Break4Change and expand other programmes that provide early help, such as Triple P Parenting, to families to prevent problems spiralling.” Funding for the project has been provided by the European Commission under the Daphne III programme. The programme is intended to help protect children, young people and women against all forms of violence and to encourage better health protection, well-being and social cohesion. Dr Wilcox added: “We hope to build on previous learning in this area to enable a better pan-European understanding of (child to parent violence) and further develop innovative change models, identifying and publicising a range of good practice actions that can be used to safeguard and improve future outcomes for children and their families who are affected by this problem.” ■

Mark Brailsford on the masters at work aving seen 18 managers come and go since the days of Brian Clough, (Gus is the 19th this columnist has witnessed in person, a gold star for those readers who can name all of them since then) then it may be time to evaluate this most mercurial of managers, Mr Gustavo Poyet. Arguably Alan Mullery was the best of the lot, an ex-England skipper, a motivator of his players par excellence and the bête noir of Crystal Palace (sadly undermined by his eventually managing them). The most interesting of the lot was Peter Taylor. After Brian Clough left for Leeds United, his old pal, Taylor (the first of the two, for you younger readers) decided to branch out on his own. Taylor’s team was a fine side, arguably signing the finest player to wear the blue and white stripes since Tommy Cook. Taylor signed Peter Ward from Burton Albion and the rest was history. Mullery inherited this excellent team and was given significant funds to add the likes of Mark Lawrenson and Gary Williams to “The top miracle an already formidable side which would eventually reach the top worker has to be division. The Cup Final side of ‘83 Steve Gritt, without would not have been possible without this platform. Mark McGhee got Albion whom Albion promoted in a play-off final, an immense achievement, an unloved would arguably Barry Lloyd got Albion promoted and Coppell nearly worked a miracle in the not even exist” Championship. The top miracle worker though, has to be Steve Gritt, without whom Albion would arguably not even exist. That though, is all in the past, it is the here and now that matters and in Gus Poyet, have Albion got the best manager in their history? Potentially, if Poyet gets Albion to the Premier League it will rank as the greatest achievement by any Albion manager. What is the evidence? Given that Gus inherited a team fighting relegation, playing at an athletics track and with a mixed bag of journeymen players, it could be argued that Gus’ achievement so far is already worth the accolade as the finest manager Brighton and Hove Albion have ever had. His (very few) detractors may point out the obvious wealth advantage from having a new stadium and a chairman with money but this overlooks the Albion’s budget shortfall relative to the insane economics of this league. When Albion have half the budget of the league leaders (Cardiff City allegedly have a transfer budget of £25m compared to roughly half that for The Seagulls) then his achievement in keeping Albion in play-off contention is remarkable. Whilst it does get a tad wearisome to hear a manager bleating about the spending gap, it is a valid point. What would elevate Poyet to the very top of the Albion manager’s hall of fame would undoubtedly be returning Albion to the top flight. In the current economic madhouse that is the top two divisions of English football, this would go down as the most impressive achievement second only to the miracle of the club’s survival after the theft of the Goldstone. If there is to be an Albion Hall of Fame, which would be great to have in the museum or around the stadium concourse, then arguably (I am sure you can add your own name to this list) these are the images we should see immortalised: Seward, Billy Lane, Cook, Taylor, Mullery, McGhee, Steve Gritt. The difference between the others and Gus Poyet? We have yet to discover and the journey is a wonder to behold. He may not be here for long, he is a progressive, characterful manager whose team plays the best football most of us have ever seen from an Albion side; it would be wise to appreciate him in the here and now, his like do not come along very often.

Dreams really do come true Supporters campaigning on the streets, a desperate campaign to save the club, a new stadium, almost going out of the league and existence on the final day of the season. Sound familiar? Yes, for Brighton and Hove Albion read Swansea City. Fairytales do come true, as any Albion supporter will tell you who wept at that magical first match against Doncaster Rovers at The Amex. The similarities between Swansea and Brighton end there as Swansea managed their transformation within ten years and Albion's is ongoing after nearly twice that long. That it is possible for a team from the lower leagues to thrive in the Premier League has been gloriously proven by Swansea not only doing well in the league, but having done so playing progressive attractive football. Seeing Swansea lift the League Cup trophy at Wembley shows what may be possible for Albion in the future, an inspiration perhaps, as the dream continues.

Up next: Bolton Away With a former ‘Palace manager in the opposition dugout and an impressive unbeaten run behind them, Bolton are another example of how tough this Championship division is. This former Premier League outfit may still be a work in progress but in Dougie Freedman they have an impressive young manager whose team recently beat Hull City more easily than Albion a few weeks back. So, much to be concerned about for Gus Poyet as he plots an extension to Albion’s great run of results so far. Should Albion fans be worried? Well, yes, it’s a long way to go yet and if this Championship has proved anything it’s how unpredictable the league is at the moment. Bolton still have some of their former Premier League players and will be a tough proposition. However, Albion are grinding out results even when not on top form which bodes well. Expect an almighty tussle and a draw which, if the two points a game average is deemed enough to clinch a play-off place, will be considered to be a job well done. Words: Mark Brailsford

hen oh when is someone going to put an end to all this nonsense about horse meat? Surely for rational omnivores the argument is about being lied to, and of course who it is that’s lying. Horse meat is surely no different for us meat eaters to the devouring of a chicken, a pig, a cow, a duck... Yes, I’ll stop there because I don’t want to engage in the debate about eating dog, although if push came to shove I’m sure if hungry enough many of us would. Horse is on the menu across much of Europe and I have on many occasions eaten it and can confirm that it can be delicious, tasty and with an interestingly long grain to the muscle that adds texture. How many of you have stopped reading? The issue is surely not with eating horse but with why? The answers are cloaked in mystery and in, dare I say it, subterfuge. I have little doubt in my own mind that much of this is due to the pressure put on suppliers by the large food retailers. In an effort to produce fast foods at extraordinarily low prices it was only a matter of time before something had to give. In this case it was Neddy and Dobbin. Driving down unit costs to such a level that the manufacturers find it necessary to source their produce from, shall we say, less conventional providers, must play a part in this story. I watched with interest as Delia Smith bemoaned the fact that people no longer cook as she launched her online cookery school. I look on with despair as I see people loading their supermarket baskets and trollies with ready meals

“Dare I use the phrase locking the stable door after the horse has bolted?” and nothing else. Maybe Saint Delia is right, even I succumb to the lure of a ready meal from time to time, although they do tend to be from the also sainted M&S. Over the years the chains have bullied food suppliers into producing milk at a loss and vegetables and fruit in uniform sizes that leave some producers and their produce laid to waste. There are orchards being ploughed up and farms converting to crops that provide cash rather than food as a consequence. It’s a tragedy and, dare I

use the phrase, we may be locking the stable door after the horse has bolted? In the last few weeks the population have been reported to be voting with their feet and traditional butchers, who can on the whole prove the provenance of the meats that they sell, are saying that business has increased. Paul Williams of Brampton’s butchers in Kemp Town Village has seen an increase of 22 per cent already: “We are seeing new faces, all who say they no longer trust supermarket meat and are amazed that we can show certificates proving where our meat originates, but even then they want to know where the mince and sausages come from and are shocked to learn that we make them at the shop. There is a whole generation who are unaware of how butchers work.” One can hope that such a swing in popularity will influence the way the big powers operate. By the time they have tested all the meats that they buy and ditched all the products that have been found to contain traces of equine DNA, they will be somewhat out of pocket. It will be a harsh lesson but one they certainly needed to learn. And trust me, I have little sympathy for the meat suppliers who knowingly introduced horse meat into our food chain. I hope they all get fined and locked up and whilst locked up made to eat a diet of oats, they certainly don’t deserve meat of any kind and especially not horse. I ate horse meat stew as recently as last October whilst in Maastricht. It was a Belgian restaurant and it was a very traditional sour stew served with fabulous frites – and I loved it. I felt no guilt. It doesn’t seem much different to me than riding horses and certainly less so than making them pull carriages, jump fences and race across tracks interspersed with sometimes deadly jumps. Our crazy habit of humanising animals is partly to blame and we do all have the right to decide what we will and will not eat. If we can sell cow, pig, hen, but feel better calling it beef, pork and chicken then that is a crazy British quirk. I would readily vote for a change in the law that allowed the sale of horse meat, properly regulated of course and maybe re-named. Any suggestions for a generic term for horse meat? I suggest Shergar.

assive congratulations to our favourite Sussex resident Adele, who took the Academy Awards by storm last weekend, winning the Oscar for best original song for ‘Skyfall’ and clinching the Bond franchise’s first Oscar in 47 years. In an emotional acceptance speech, Adele choked back tears to thank ‘her man’, husband Simon Konecki, who had accompanied her to the awards. When asked how she would celebrate her win, Adele added: “I think I’m going to the Vanity Fair party, so that’ll be quite nice. But I’ve got to get up at 6am so one glass of champagne and I'm gone these days." The stunning new mum had earlier wowed the crowd in the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with her first ever live performance of the Bond theme. Dame Shirley Bassey added to the Bond extravaganza with a stellar performance of her own Bond theme song, Goldfinger’, receiving a standing ovation. Pure class.

Caitlin was having a weekend by the sea and took a flight on the Brighton Wheel. The wheel appeared in her paper, The Times, last week lit up in pink to support Breast Cancer Care – maybe that gave her the idea to pop along!

It’s been a fash-tastic week for the award-winning team at Trevor Sorbie Brighton, as last week two of the salon’s hottest stars, Anna Chapman and Fergal Doyle, assisted L’Oréal Professionnel’s top session stylist Anthony Turner at London Fashion Week. Anna prepped the models for the amazing Topshop Unique and Preen shows; while Fergal worked on models for the fabulous Peter Pilotto runway. All eyes were on the Topshop Unique front row, which was one of the most star-studded of LFW; boasting One Direction’s Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, Pixie Geldof, Daisy Lowe and representing the good old US of A, fashionista Olivia Palermo and Superman Returns actress Kate Bosworth. Hitting the catwalk for both the Peter Pilotto and Topshop Unique was model of the moment (and star of this month’s British Vogue cover) Cara Delevingne, pictured here backstage being worked on by the wonderful Fergal; who tells us she was the ultimate professional; having dozens of paparazzi taking photos while a team of six did her hair, make-up, nails, and dressing. fter getting to grips with dating profiles and online male behaviour my next job was to take a little stroll through the various flavours of site on offer. I’ve mentioned before that there are different sites for different tastes and I treated them a bit like bars. Below I’ve profiled a handful of the most ‘entertaining’. www.darwindating.com: About as awful as it is addictive. It’s online dating for (externally) beautiful people where you get to vote on the looks of would-be members on a scale of monkey to hunky. Hours of fun. I swanned around on there for a while among the beautiful people until I found a guy that hadn’t had his eyebrows threaded. We went on the dullest date of my life, during which he actually “I thought that was just a offered me his bicep to teen movie stereotype” squeeze without irony. Other than being delighted that Johnny Bravo is alive and well and cruising dodgy dating sites I have little to add. Is it true? Are the majority of ‘good-looking’ people vacuous A-holes that trade on nothing but their looks? I thought that was just a teen movie stereotype... At the other end of the spectrum there's www.theuglybugball.com “for the aesthetically average”. www.sugardaddy.com: For girls that like a bit of money with their honey. Sublimely naive, it actually took me a while to realise that this site is essentially for courtesans who don’t want to wear the nametag. Although this is utterly deniable of course. There was no mention of numbers until one particularly bold (aka stupid) suitor offered me £5000 a month to be his exclusive mistress. Fascinatingly, the guy was a psychoanalyst. Go figure that Freud. Did I consider it? Even for a moment? No. Simply because I know I couldn’t hack it. But I did think about what it might require to be that woman, and the writer in me wanted to find out. I’ll go pretty far in the name of research, and while I’ve no problem with prostitution and actually think it should be legalised so the girls and guys unionise, I just don’t have a thick enough skin for it, however glam Billie Piper makes it look. So I closed down that particular account feeling like I was certainly doing things the hard way. There’s also www.misstravel.com for girls that are so pretty they don't need to pay for holidays. www.uniformdating.com: Hello sailor! And soldier. And fireman. And... you get the picture. Yes, I like a man in uniform. Who doesn’t? But this site wasn’t just for fetishists (although there were a fair few of us I can tell you). It’s actually a really practical find for any uniformed professional engaged in shift work. Here you can find someone who understands the demands and hours of uniformed jobs and eventually you can sync your schedules together. For the rest of us it’s just like having a huge dressing up box and Ken doll at your disposal. Most of them can pick you up and throw you about too. Unless of course, like me you met a Cavalry Officer (known in the military as The Chavalry) who have servants to do that for them. It was at this point in my online dating travels that I began to lose heart. My chick lit-style comedy venture certainly had all the material it needed, but when I went to write it, it just felt limp. Underneath all the comedic incidents there was something uneasy about the whole experience. I decided to stop being facetious and actually dig a little deeper... What resulted was a lengthy paper called ‘Mind Change’ that was printed in the Time issue of 125 Magazine. Essentially it was about how the internet is changing our neurology and psychology. I was lucky enough to interview several top neuroscientists from Oxford and Cambridge, and next week I will précis my findings for you, before leaving online dating where it belongs... which is offline.

BRIGHTON WRITES

Lynn Ruth Miller

Inspire Me Christina Toimela learns that setting goals can be fun

I

have been setting goals for myself for all my life. At the age of five I announced that when I was older I would pass my matriculation examinations (the equivalent of British A-Levels) with flying colours. Twelve years later I did it. In one of my essays I explained that I would take an additional French test because I wanted to work for a classy French brand called Lancôme. Twelve years Jenny later I pursued a PR career working for Harper L’Oréal’s Luxury Brand Division, one of the brands being Lancôme. I was not the applicant with several university “This lady is fun and degrees nor the one with tons of experience. However, I was the one calm. I’m inspired!” whose attitude and fluency in French were approved by the native MD. Later in life I have set my goals by listing them. It has been a serious process involving a lot of negative self-talk in case of losing my focus. I’ve always hoped for a more pleasant and efficient way of doing it... Fast forward to Brighton, Friend’s Meeting House: I wander down the corridor following the sounds of laughter. I’m on my way to Certified Goal Mapping Practitioner Jenny Harper’s workshop on Brian Mayne’s Goal Mapping technique. I enter the small room full of friendly people. Jenny happily chats with everyone, showing no signs of stress even if she is about to start her very first Goal Mapping workshop. Jenny describes herself as a fun person who likes to laugh and read a lot. She also likes adventure and change. She talks calmly and seems very relaxed, yet enthusiastic. I’m hypnotised. This lady is fun and calm. I’m inspired! Jenny’s background is in nursing, management and consultancy. She has always been interested in people and group dynamics. She wants to know why some people manage to grasp opportunities and some people don’t. This is why she first attended a seminar led by Brian Mayne who created the Goal Mapping model. Jenny always knew how goal setting could help people. She was also aware that very few people set goals and, if they do, they only use words: “Traditionally we use words alone to set goals, using our left brain and endless repetition,” Jenny says. “Establishing goals with Goal Mapping we also connect with the right, creative brain, using imagery – the language of the subconscious which helps us to feel empowered to take action.” Jenny enjoys working with the Goal Mapping tool because it is a versatile approach: “It’s a fun and interesting way of setting goals. People feel less pressured and there is much more of a flow to it.” Instead of being told what she would be good at, Jenny hoped someone would have asked her what it was that she really wanted to do when she was young: “I want young people to have those opportunities that I did not have. Goal Mapping can engage people to think about what is it they really want.” I sit in silence and think about my goals. In 2008 I decided that I want to interview inspiring people, encourage others, and to get my own chat show. I dropped my sales and logistics job and started a new career studying radioand TV-journalism. If the 12-year pattern repeats itself I will have my own chat show in seven years’ time. I can live with that! Do you know any people who have really inspired you in Brighton? We’re not looking for celebrities. Not ordinary, but extraordinary. The San Francisco-based writer recalls the Panty Raids of the ’50s

A

meteorite fell out of the sky in Russia and I think Vladimir Putin should take note. When it feels like the sky is falling on you, it is time to think about your priorities. I was in Moscow last fall right after the Pussy Riot incident. Remember that? Three young women were charged with hooliganism because they sang obscenities in a Russian Orthodox Cathedral begging the Virgin Mary to “throw Putin out”. Hooliganism is defined as “a tough or aggressive youth.” When you think about it, almost any action by a teenager these days can be defined as tough and aggressive by parents and teachers. What a conservative, established adult might label “tough or aggressive”, might very well feel like a lot of fun to the accused. Does that mean Russia is outlawing fun? What a terrible loss for its population. Life can be very dull without a few pranks. Take the Panty Raids at the University of Michigan back in the ‘50s. I was there and I remember it well. It had been a miserably long hard winter with snow, ice and wind confining most of us indoors for weeks at a time. Driving was impossible, walking a chore and there was no evidence of relief. One freezing spring night, a group of students battling frustration, alcohol and excess testosterone, erupted from their all male dormitories and invaded the women’s residences. They tore open bureau drawers and ransacked closets throwing women’s undies out of windows, hanging bras on telephone poles, draping corsets on trees. The place looked like a landscape advertisement for Ann Summers. Indeed, Victoria’s Secret was revealed.

If you want to get picky about it, the boys were certainly destructive... it took “The place looked months to retrieve our underwear and like a landscape most if it was damaged beyond repair. The men were certainly aggressive, advertisement for pushing their way into boudoirs forbidden to the male sex. In those days, Ann Summers” men were not privy to female undies. They actually were thrilled at the touch of satin knickers or a lacy bra. That was over 60 years ago. Today I don’t think there’s a guy on the planet who gets a thrill from a glimpse of lingerie. They see it every day on every woman who has a bit of cleavage worth showing. I can understand why those girls appealed to The Virgin Mary to help them with their political goals. After all, they say that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, and Mary rocked a very influential cradle in her day. Now, I ascribe to no particular religious belief but I cannot help but believe that when The Virgin Mary saw Russia suppressing young girls for expressing their views, she remembered how she felt when she told Joseph her news. I think, when Mary saw what was happening in Russia, she thought: “It is time to remind those judges that the girls they are condemning are the potential mothers of the next generation. Their children will either re-elect Putin because they forgive him, or denounce him for his restrictive policies. “ I can almost hear the severe tone of her voice when she said to the father of us all: “Daddy! If this continues, who knows whom they will attack next?” I like to think that meteorite fell to remind the Russians that somewhere, somehow, there is a higher power that believes in freedom of thought. I know it’s a far fetched theory, but when I remember how silly it would have been to arrest the students who were throwing knickers at passers-by in the ’50s, I cannot help but think it was just as silly to jail three young women for having an opinion of their own. In another 50 years, a group just like them might very well be singing Mass. You must have chaos within you To give birth to a dancing star. – Friedrich Nietzsche

JD: “The most liberating and empowering thing about working with Lasse was that he really, truly trusted you.” Josh, I heard you talked to Ryan [Seacrest] about the love scenes and how you wanted to make it clear you weren’t coming on to his girl... JD: “I did! I don't know why I felt compelled to do that but I did.” JH: “That’s because you’re a good person, but then I felt obligated to go and speak to Fergie.” [laughs] Josh, Did you hear that one of Lasse’s biggest challenges was to reign your charm in? JD: [laughs] “I don’t know if it was reigning my charm in, it was really about just stripping anything away and not forcing anything, between Julianne and I we didn’t force any of it.”

ulianne, with Safe Haven you’ve obviously touched on something darker than Rock Of Ages, and Josh, you with Transformers and romantic comedies... Josh Duhamel: “Oh no, that was an exercise in character work.” [laughs] How do you feel about going into a more serious role like this? JD: “For me it’s always been about trying to bust out of some kind of a box I’m put in. I would rather sneak up on people than have them expect too little or expectations being too high.” Julianne Hough: “I want to copy his answer because I feel the same way. You know, like I’m trying to exceed expectations for what people have discovered you as. So you know there is so much more to me; I would just love to have the shot or opportunity to do that.” Julianne, how do you feel about being described as a triple threat? JH: “I heard that term when I was very young. I aspired to be that because for me, I think of the golden age in Hollywood like Ginger Rogers, Doris Day and Judy Garland. Just to have that association is beyond great.” Have you ever wanted to sing Josh? You don’t need to sing... JD: “Yes, this is true.” JH: “Your baby is going to come out dancing so that's a triple threat right there.” JD: “Hey, that’s what I'm shooting for, to have a Hollywood starlet. Have him completely off the rails by 15.” JH: “Oh my God!” [laughs] Not to compartmentalise yourself as an actor, but if you’re good at something, do the right thing. What’s your take on that? JD: “My take on that is I agree with that. For me anyway, I focus everything I have into acting because maybe it’s out of desperation [laughs] but I also am taking some dance classes, and I don’t taking singing classes but I like to practise it, not because I’m going to make a second career out of it but it may be fun to use at some point.” JH: “I think people might not be as good at the

“The most liberating and empowering thing about working with Lasse was that he really, truly trusted you” – Josh other thing but want to try it. I know for me I wish I could do everything in the world because I love to learn and I love gaining a new skill and feeling like I’m growing.” [Safe Haven director] Lasse Hallström gave you the opportunity for improvisation. How did you find that? JH: “I was a little nervous because, you know, I’ve wanted to be an actor my whole life but I have not had that much experience professionally. To be honest it was always ‘sing this song, dance this dance’ and do that, so this was very freeing and nerve wracking because he's actually trusting me to be an actor now which was awesome. I did feel like I was hired to be an actor in this film.”

Do you come under pressure to keep your appearance as how you look now? JD: “If it were up to me I would’ve been Capt Ron! I tried talking Lasse into letting me have a full beard, a pierced ear and just play a guy who lives in the marina and owns a general store. I tried to convince Lasse: ‘Listen, this guy, he doesn’t care. He doesn’t give a s*** about how he looks as a single dad who’s trying to raise two kids and work at the general store’. He was like: ‘Yes, I understand all that but it’s a Nicholas Sparks movie’.” JH: “Yeah I had the same thing. They wanted to make sure I was recognisable so they changed Katie in the movie from having long blonde hair where she dyes it brown, to short blonde hair from long brown hair and I was like: ‘Wow, I have perfect highlights for an out-of-the-box bleached blonde’ and ‘You know my eyebrows should be dark and I should have roots because they would grow’ but they were like: ‘No, that’ll look bad’.” What have you got coming up next? JD: “There’s a movie called Scenic Route that’s set south by southwest, Kyle Killen was the writer on it. It’s about these two guys who get stranded on the side of the road, four days go by without any food or water or anything, and it goes from a dark buddy comedy to a survival movie and by the end you don’t know if either one of them really made it out. I had like a Mohawk and it was awesome. I recommend anybody should get a Mohawk!” JH: “I just did a movie with Diablo Cody called Paradise where I play a burn victim/survivor and a lot of her body is burned, and that is what the whole movie is about, about this outside appearance and how that changes you inside and your identity is totally, completely stripped out and you have to work out who you are now.” Is there anything you are looking forward to doing or is there anything you would love to do? JH: “I’m reading scripts right now and auditioning for things, and they’re all very, very different projects. I think for me the challenge right now is going to be next-step strategies and trying to not just get a job but to get one where I can make smart choices and will challenge me and help with the next project after that. It’s more about the work than about any kind of fame or money.” JD: “I never really know until I read it, obviously I want to try and do something that is outside of what I have done but it’s really about a script and the director. If I read it and I love it then I’ll try to chase it. Ultimately to me, if you have a great script and a great director, you’re really increasing your odds at making a great movie.” Safe Haven is out now in cinemas nationwide.

or some, it heralds the start of summer – a time of warm weather, ice creams and Brighton rock. However, there’s no mistaking that for the last 47 years, the month of May has become synonymous with Brighton Festival. As England’s most established mixed arts Festival, it’s become a major milestone in the international cultural calendar. This year poet, author, broadcaster and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen takes on the role of Guest Director, following in the footsteps of Anish Kapoor, Brian Eno, Aung San Suu Kyi and Vanessa Redgrave. From mind-boggling circus feats to emotive theatre, spectacular live music concerts, dynamic dance and thought-provoking debate, the festival is as eclectic, daring and astounding as ever. Following the annual Children’s Parade, Michael

Benjamin Britten’s centenary year will be celebrated in style with the world premiere of Britten: The Canticles, co-commissioned by Brighton Festival and featuring an amazing cast and artists from the worlds of theatre, art and choreography. Gigs from the likes of Sinead O’Connor, The Flaming Lips, jazz pianist Zoe Rahman and electronic artist Apparat ensure contemporary music lovers are also equally catered for. Theatre-goers can expect the infamous Bullet Catch and a re-telling of Beowulf in The Spiegeltent, a new production of The Kite Runner at the Theatre Royal Brighton and the UK Premiere of Lola Arias’ moving play My Life After, whilst visual Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen takes up residency at Fabrica and Lighthouse with two very special installations. LEAD BY... EXAMPLE, Brighton Centre, 26 February 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪

S

pilt a drink recently? You may have found yourself at Elliot Gleave’s gig! AKA: EG (his initials.) AKA: Example (his stage name.) A very loud and visually impressive set led an uninhibited crowd jumping from the very first beat to singing lyrics back ‘Love kickstarts again’ with understood awakening until way after the band had left. The venue was charmed twofold, by Example’s ability to carry a heavy sound as if it were a floating bubble, and by an awestriking light show (on its own it would have been worth the ticket.) From illuminated ambience, to sweeping beats of fanatical colour, this was musical entertainment very likely and loudly taking place in the stomach of Megaton. Lights this big and sounds this loud complimented the Brighton Centre, offering a lively and rambunctious smackdown usually reserved for festival-going. The emphatic resounding crowd received hits from 2012 album ‘Evolution Of Man’, as well as the previous sell out tour albums, and were (ironically) lead by example to hug one another, to put hands on each others shoulders (creating a rather impressive web of arms and camaraderie) and to put our hands and friends in the air. It seems Elliot is as much a fan of his audience as the audience are of him. Example not only made examples of themselves, of their crowd and of the venue but of all bands who do not put on a show. This was loud, it was messy, it was lit up, it was exemplary. Ben Darling

LEE HURST – TOO SCARED TO LEAVE THE HOUSE

Lee Hurst is an excellent presence on stage, creating a rapport with his audience from the moment the lights went up on his familiar domed head. This was a show of two halves, the first section had Hurst provide a warm-up for himself, chatting with the front row. The second half got into the meat of the show, in which Lee revealed his own fears and addressed those of the audience he had collected on pieces of paper during the interval. With a cheeky cockney grin, and an attitude that sailed close to the wind of being politically incorrect occasionally but was met with squeals of enjoyment. A good value evening out peppered with all the laughs you would expect from such a comedy veteran. The Old Market, 23 February 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪ Victoria Nangle Did you disagree with our verdict on any of these shows?

MAURICE’S JUBILEE

Excellent veterans of stage and screen, Julian Glover and Sheila Reid give this show depths the writing lacks. With no tension in the predictable plot, the meagre dramatic moments – an angry outburst, a few tears, a hackneyed impersonation – seemed to intrude on the characters’ genteel decay. So did the playwright, sitting as if ready to pounce throughout Glover’s time-polished monologue, and later delighting a handful of fans with some fancy dress mimicry. The audience was fidgety, some left. Nicola McAuliffe’s sad drama is played for laughs. Not even the accidentally topical mention of cheap mince products seemed funny. STAGE: CHICHESTER FESTIVAL 2013 Chichester Festival Theatre announces an exciting programme for their 2013 Festival

I

n a major announcement CFT’s Theatre in the Park is unveiled with major new productions of Barnum and Neville’s Island; Richard Eyre returns to direct The Pajama Game; and The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui comes to the Minerva Theatre, then transfers to the West End with Henry Goodman reprising his award-winning role. Theatre in the Park, a temporary state-of-the-art auditorium, will stage two productions at the heart of Chichester’s Festival 2013. The brand new space will be erected in June while the £22 million RENEW redevelopment of the Festival Theatre continues.

Mirroring the Festival Theatre’s auditorium, the purpose-built temporary building will house 1,400 seats and a thrust stage. It will be just a few minutes’ stroll across Oaklands Park from the Festival Theatre site. Theatre in the Park will be unveiled with a major revival of the musical Barnum presented in association with Cameron Mackintosh. Directed by Timothy Sheader, Artistic Director of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, this production will star the versatile and consummate Broadway entertainer Christopher Fitzgerald in the title role. Angus Jackson directs Neville’s Island, the second production to be staged in the Theatre in the Park. Tim Firth’s comedy about a disastrous outward bound expedition promises to be a technically and visually ambitious staging. Richard Eyre returns to Chichester to direct the musical The Pajama Game, which opens the Festival season in the Minerva Theatre. Love is in the air at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory but sparks fly when employees are refused a pay rise. Other highlights include the return of the critically-acclaimed production The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht, one of the undoubted hits of Festival 2012. Directed by Chichester’s Artistic Director, Jonathan Church, the production will once again feature Henry Goodman reprising his awardwinning performance in the title role. Set in Chicago in the 1930s during the Great Depression, the play is a powerful and sharp-witted parable of the rise of Hitler. The second play to be directed by Angus Jackson during Festival 2013 will be the world premiere of political drama If Only by David Edgar, which takes a witty and astute look at the world of coalition government.

Launched in 2011 next to Brighton’s historic West Pier, The Passion Of Christ saw crowds flock to watch and be a part of a moving portrayal, faithful to the original scripture, of the days leading up to Jesus’ arrest, death and resurrection. Writer and Director of The Passion Of Christ, James Burke-Dunsmore has performed the role of Jesus Christ on stage and screen nationally and internationally for over 14 years. ot many bands have made it to 50, with half a century of music making and performance, it generally defies logic. But along with The Temptations, The Four Tops and The Rolling Stones, you can now add The Pretty Things, the lesser known brother of The Stones, but born of the same desire to rock'n'roll Taking their name from the Bo Diddley song ‘Pretty Thing’, the band came out of Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys which consisted of Dick Taylor, Mick Jagger and Keith Richard. When Brian Jones started recruiting for his own band all three decamped to become The Rolling Stones, with Taylor briefly playing bass for the band. He quit during 1962, accepting a place at the London School of Art where he met Phil May, and together they formed The Pretty Things, starting their career by covering R'n'B songs. “I had Jagger's songbook,” says Phil May, the only constant member over the band’s 50 years of existence. “He was very anal about the R’n’B thing. He wrote down every lyric of every Chuck Berry, every Bo Diddley song and every Muddy Waters song... even songs like ‘Cops And Robbers’, which not many people did because it lasted 20 minutes and had 5,000 words – it’s like singing Hamlet... Dick [Taylor] gave me that songbook when he left the Stones. In those days you couldn’t pause your Dansette, you had to wait for the verse to come around again – an act of love by Jagger to get all those words down. Shame I haven’t got that book now, it would go to the V&A!” Like the Stones, they initially played rhythm ’n’ blues material before finding their feet as songwriters. By the mid-’60s they were leaning towards soul music, before fully embracing psychedelia (like the Stones), and releasing a number of minor Brit Psyche classics, culminating in the S.F. Sorrow album, before turing into a classic late ’60s/early ’70s rock band with a psychedelic edge, a la Parachute. Now, nearing 70, May, Taylor and band are about to embark on a full UK tour. “I go to the gym and swim every day, but that’s only holding the line – I’m not adding muscles. It’s making up for the bottle of wine I had the night before, or the 20 cigarettes I smoked. Just trying to extend the thinking cord of life a little longer,” laughs May, not one to take things too seriously, but obviously passionate about his rock ’n’ roll. Interest in the band is on the up again, as May explains: “It comes in waves. Suddenly, we got the Heroes award [2009 MOJO Heroes Award], and you’re flavour of the month. We never really stopped working, and always had a cult thing, and at the moment it’s more than just a cult thing, But we would have carried on making music irrespective of the recognition. It was something we had to do...” The Pretty Things, Komedia, Wednesday 6 March, 8pm, £18.50, www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

WHAT’S ON COMEDY&FILM

COMEDY: MITCH BENN Q&A Regular cast member of BBC Radio 4’s Now Show, the musical satirical comic talks to Victoria Nangle Hello! Thank you for bringing your Reduced Circumstances show to Brighton. What should we expect from the show? “Well, it’s a game of two halves really; the first half is more or less last year's Edinburgh show,about my radical weight loss a couple of years back, among other things, and the second half is what I’d like to call “greatest hits” although “nearest misses” is closer to the truth.”

COMEDY: JO BRAND AND OMID DJALILI Jo Brand and Omid Djalili are performing the stand up gig to raise funds for Burma Campaign UK and its campaign to end human rights abuses in Burma. The Brighton Dome has generously donated the venue. Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, Wed 6 Mar, 8pm, £18

Last time I saw you here you'd just written ‘'I’m Proud Of The BBC’, which was quite a hit – and an exciting thing to see that early on in its production. Are you proud of that song? “Yes, it kind of took me by surprise, that one – I wrote it à propos of nothing in particular, it was just kind of on my mind, and we started doing it live and people went crazy for it. That’s why there was a single and a video; people just really wanted to hear that song. I think I hit a bit of a nerve there.” You're a regular contributor to Radio 4’s The Now Show. Is there any news topic you wouldn’t write about? “There’s no topic that’s 100 per cent off limits but some are much harder to tackle than others. Having said that, some of my best Now Show songs have been the deliberately “bleak” kind, the ones which are satirical without necessarily even attempting to be funny. “Satire” and “satirical comedy” aren’t the same thing.” Do you find that topical stimuli incites you more or less the longer you do it? Has familiarity with the news made you jaded? “There’s no such thing as “familiarity with the news” because the news is always changing.” I heard a rumour that your first book will be out this year. Any chance of signed copies at the Brighton show? “Unlikely, as it doesn't come out till July 18th. I might have a few proof copies by then but I think I’ll be under strict instructions as to what I can do with them...” Can you give us a sneaky teaser as to what the book might be about? “It’s called Terra; it's a sci-fi novel for readers aged about 11 and over; it’s about a little girl who is accidentally abducted by a UFO as a baby and is adopted by aliens and grows up on another planet.” What’s your favourite piece of recent news for musical inspiration? “I just posted my Gay Marriage song up on mitchbenn.com and on YouTube. ” Mitch Benn – Reduced Circumstances, Komnedia, Saturday 9 March 2013, 7.30pm, £12/10, www.komedia/brighton See also, p10.

STARS With Val Aviv

★ARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}

No matter how manic or confused you get, relax and think of this period as the last chapter of a story, where all the conflicts in the year have been laid to rest and what is left is some down time to take it all in. Rest now for this is the last week your body will let you.

★TAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}

Listen out for one of your friends may have a clever money making idea which has an altruistic stamp all over it, appealing to your good nature and cashing in on your contacts. You can make a difference to the world and what you say and do counts.

★GEMINI {May 22–June 21}

You’re at the top of your game and you never had so much influence as you do now. Providence gives you the opportunity to say something strikingly optimistic, take the chance to be positive as that’s the angle which can win others over.

★CANCER {June 22–July 22}

With the new Moon in your house of higher knowledge and expanse, it’s time for you to branch out yet further into the abyss. Knowledge is key, but it’s not what you know that can help you now - but what you discover through further enquiry.

★LEO {July 23–Aug 22}

Family responsibilities and joint finances are sorted out. You need to reach some kind of conclusion although nothing is going to be black and white. Adding imaginary meaning to information will not serve you well, listen only to facts.

★VIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}

Your ruler the cerebral Mercury is not only in your opposite sign of Pisces, but is in retrograde motion crossing wounded Chiron and getting close to the misty Neptune. Revisiting an old partnership wound brings up issues surrounding balance.

★LIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}

Perhaps you would like to maneuver out of the apparent trappings of the world? What’s happening at work may not be clear cut, indeed water that follows the same course for a long period will eventually make it’s groove on the stone. So too will you - if you keep on plugging.

★SCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}

It can be fun and games all the way, just don’t go getting addicted, Just make the most of it now while the energy is there and where possible get front line and be seen in the world, you’re able to make one hell of an impression.

thursday 7 Mayday BBC1, 9pm It’s the final part in this gripping drama that’s been taking over prime evening slot this week (and reminding us how lovely the Downs are). As the town gathers for Hattie’s memorial things take a dark turn, and a chaotic interruption has fatal consequences. This sleepy town will never be the same again.

Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe BBC2, 10pm It’s been a busy old week, and no news story or telly event is sacred when it comes to finding yourself in Charlie Brooker’s caustic sights. Covering cinema, computer games and anything you might have mentioned around a water cooler, this is a step up from the satirical rest.

Nashville More4, 10pm Ever get the feeling that Nashville’s tragedy songs may have got their inspiration from the singers’ rather tragic lives? These writers certainly seem to have got that impression, throwing more obstacles and pitfalls than It’s A Knockout did in its golden heyday. Cracking tunes though. Yee ha!

friday 8 Manchester United: Munich Air Crash Channel Five, 7pm One of the most famous nonsporting events in sporting history is the 1958 plane crash, claiming the lives of eight Manchester United players and three club officials. Using primary sources such as the cock pit recorder and eye witnesses, this documentary tells the tale.

Wild Arabia BBC2, 9pm Since the discovery of oil in Arabia changes have been plentiful. This is evident nowhere more than in the Arab relationship with nature, ranging from the now ultra high-tech sport of camel racing to falconers who are finding their birds are targetting remote controlled planes. A breath of sandy air.

Russell Brand: From Addiction To Recovery BBC3, 9pm Another chance to see Russell Brand’s personal tale of recovery, as he tells of his addiction to heroin ten years ago, and the impact it had on his career and his life expectancy at the time. Spurred to make this by the death of Amy Winehouse, he looks into our attitudes towards addiction.

monday 11 America’s Gun Addiction – Panorama BBC1, 8.30pm Things are shaking up in the old USA with regards to gun control, apparently. After the Newtown massacre left 20 school children dead, President Obama declared a wish to ban assault weapons, but was met with a wall of protest demanding more access to weapons. What happens next?

Broadchurch ITV1, 9pm Part two of the eight part thriller and by now we should’ve stopped simply pointing at the cast and naming other brilliant shows they were in before. Really, it is drama-star-studded. The mystery around Danny Latimer’s death deepens so that DI Hardy and DS Miller have to work quickly to gather suspects.

Revenge E4, 9pm That Emily, she is a shrew hellbent on getting revenge. It’s surprising her insides aren’t all shrivelled up like a prune – or a hernia – the amount of poison she must be storing. Anyway, she fakes a break up with Aidan so that she can get close to Daniel, and also plans to take down Judge Robert Barnes. Ambitious.
