Our show is called Brighton Lights and this week’s programme is literally that as we feature White Night – the all night free festival – coming up in Brighton this Saturday. To find out the amazing treats in store, we sent Cat Barker and our crew on a magical mystery coach tour across the channel to sister festival Nuit Blanche Amiens in France. Brighton seafront was the scene of the Mods and Rockers battle of 1964. For the first time since, Mods and Rockers have been back on the beach, this time in peace and harmony. Julie Anne Gilburt and Sammy Jo Doubtfire recreate the battle on the beach and profile the man behind Brightona, Abby Golding. Along the way they meet motor bike legend Eddie Kidd and Gary Shail from Quadrophenia. Matt Whistler pays a comedy tribute to Norman Wisdom and Val Aviv presents Brighton Lights. Latest diary Around town with: British Engineerium, punk festival and Chamber of Commerce flash mob Full steam ahead A full day of special, steam-driven fun took place October 10 at the British Engineerium, currently being restored for public use. The day included a guided Victorian tour with Robert Marks, a range of traction engines under steam and er, Project Manager Steve Rath the recently refurbished boilers Creative Director John Jolly running the Beam Engine all day long, with food and refreshments specially created by Riddle & Finns. The Engineerium was rescued by Mike Holland four years ago and is currently being fully restored to become one of Brighton’s main attractions in 2011. University of Brighton to recreate The House That Kevin Built, bogus police & jobs on ice

house of the future that captivated millions of TV viewers is to be rebuilt in the centre of Brighton. ‘The House That Kevin Built’ was constructed live on TV in six days in 2008 for Channel 4’s Grand Designs Live and was heralded as the UK’s first low-energy prefabricated house made from eco-friendly materials. The house was later dismantled but the concept is being reborn in the courtyard of the University of Brighton’s Faculty of Arts in Grand Parade. Kevin McCloud (pictured above), the British designer who presented the TV programme, is backing the idea along with Brighton & Hove City Council and the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the construction industry’s research and consultancy organisation. The university, which plans to involve students, staff and the community in the project, is donating the land and the university’s

or the first time in 30 years, new council house building is back on the agenda in Brighton and Hove. We have put in a bid to government to redevelop Ainsworth House, an ageing sheltered housing scheme. In its place, we hope to be able to provide some much-needed family accommodation, which would be owned and managed by the council. Back in 2007, the tenants and leaseholders voted overwhelmingly to retain the council as their landlord and we are honouring the result of that ballot by seeking additional investment for both new and existing homes.

I too will never eat anywhere that sells a pate created by force feeding ducks and geese directly into their stomachs via a funnel. The animal’s liver expands to ten times its usual size, becoming diseased and can leave the bird unable to move. Many bleed to death after having their throats punctured. What an unbelievably cruel practice, I’m happy to say my friends agree and also do not wish to eat in restaurants with it on their menu. illion-selling Scottish singer Sharleen Spiteri performed a special stripped down acoustic gig in an intimate venue last Thursday. The appearance was part of the weekly open mic night hosted by Brighton’s Juice 107.2 FM DJs Andrea Fox and Tony Marks at The Windmill Pub on Upper North Street. The event showcases local talent and features special acoustic sets from the cream of Brighton’s bands. The former Texas frontwoman played three songs selected from a catalogue spanning 20 years. After asking the audience if they were up for joining her in a good old sing-song, Sharleen opened her set with the top 10 hit from 1989 ‘I Don't Need A Lover’. She even performed an extra track for the lucky crowd after they begged the singer for more. The crowd were treated to her top 10 1997 hit with Texas, ‘Halo’. Ramona The successful Scottish singer said: “I never get to play gigs like this anymore... I’ll come back every Thursday if you’ll have me!” Sharleen is keeping busy, what with releasing solo material, performing in our local, and appearing on Sky1’s Must Be The Music show with Jamie Cullum and Dizzee Rascal. The star also manages Ramona, a four-piece Brighton band who have drawn comparisons to The Ramones, Blondie and The Strokes with their modern female-fronted pop tunes. Ramona also performed at the open mic night, playing an acoustic set of four songs, before heading off on a UK tour supporting US artist Lissie. Ramona, fronted by the gorgeous Karen Anne, are surely set for stardom.
I was delighted to be tweeted by Peter Andre last week. The star was posting about his new fragrance but just referred to it as MG. Thinking it was a bit odd that it was named after a small British sports car – I sent him a tweet asking what the initials stood for. To my surprise he tweeted immediately saying ‘@Brightonseagull it stands for Mysterious Girl!’ Glad you cleared that up for us Peter. You can catch Peter live as he will be playing the Brighton Centre in February next year.

L7 INTERVIEW 11 who played Freddy Krueger in one movie was there, and Tobe Hooper who directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist. Some circles of filmmaking, like the Soho set, are very elitist. Horror directors make films about these heinous subjects and yet they’re the most warm-hearted, embrasive people you’ll meet. I really like the family environment. Another Brighton director, Howard Ford, his film The Dead screened the day after mine. He’s made a zombie movie in Africa – an amazing achievement.
SCREAM TEST As his new werewolf flick 13 Hrs arrives in time for Halloween, Brighton director Jonathan Glendening chats to Bella Todd about making a horror film on a budget
E
very year 30,000 horror fans descend on the West End for FrightFest, the UK’s biggest celebration of things that make you go eeeeeek! Among them this summer – and both written and directed by Brightonians – was 13 Hrs, which sees Isabella Calthorpe, Gemma Atkinson and Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy) get bloody in a stately home. We caught up with the man behind the camera to talk about tardy werewolf suits and seaside sludge monsters, why horror directors are the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and a strange apprenticeship interviewing stroke victims for Kenneth Branagh’s Frankenstein...
filming. The whole finale is in the big stately home ballroom. So I had to shoot all the shots left to right on the actors on day five, and all the shots in the other direction – on a mock-up, on day 18 – of these German stuntmen in monster suits, with the costume guy on set still trying to sew them up, going ‘I told you it wasn’t ready!’ I’ve learnt so many things. I’ve learnt that if you only have a small budget, do the film as just people in a room talking about stuff. Like Saw. But instead I set off on a rampage to try and outdo Hollywood!
Let’s start you off with an easy one – what’s the best horror film ever made? When I was five I watched Jaws three times at the cinema in Eastbourne. The seats had rips! Jaws does the fundamental thing of scaring you without necessarily showing you anything, plus you have the three great character actors of the ’70s. Each time you’re waiting for the moment when Ben Gardner’s head falls out of the boat into Richard Dreyfuss’ face. You know it’s coming. And yet it still gets you every time, because it’s off the beat.

Why did you opt for werewolves with 13 Hrs? It was less a desire to make a werewolf film, than to make a horror film about a family in conflict. The appearance of the werewolf has upset some traditionalists. The concept is that it’s like a virus, a disease. It just turns you... rabid. We hear you had some costume issues... We had access to Longcross Studios, a stately home film studios in Surrey, but we had to film between certain dates because Clash Of The Titans were moving in. The effects department said it would take six weeks to deliver a monster suit. Okay, well, I need it in six days! Then I found out we only had the studios for the first five days of
How do you achieve low budget scares? The biggest thing is you just have to be faster when you’re filming. Turn round to your cameraman, ‘Was that scary?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Okay, move on.’ It’s hard to tell how scary something is on set, when you’ve got a 20 stone electrician ramming a door with a stick, pretending to be a werewolf, or a special effects person with a paintbrush dipped in red going flick flick flick. What’s funny is you can get scared when the cast are doing their thing. They’re good actors portraying fear. And when they’re going through it you do feel the goosebumps – despite the 30 crew members standing behind you. All the directors went out for lunch at FrightFest. That must have been quite some conversation... It was very gossipy. The American guys who made Hatchet I and II are really intelligent, and the guy
Do you look for anything particular in a horror audition? Do you do a scream test? We did a lot of improvisation with Isabella [Calthorpe] and Gemma [Atkinson] – in maybe a slightly cruel way. ‘Your family’s just been murdered by a werewolf: go!’ Improv gives you an indication of how fast and good the actors are going to be on set – when you’re working under such time constraints, you just need everyone to be spot on. So I had Gemma Atkinson crawling around on the floor, sobbing. I’m thinking, FHM would pay me good money for this! We deliberately cast to type so we could then twist it. Are Harry Potter fans going to be surprised by Tom Felton’s performance? I think so. He plays the best friend of the brother. Again, we’re using preconceptions. ‘That’s Malfoy from Harry Potter, he’s bound to be evil...’ Which creature from horror movie history would you least like to be done in by? Floating in open water with a limb hanging off has got to be the worst. Tell us about working on Frankenstein with Kenneth Branagh and Robert De Niro... Back in ’92 I sent Kenneth Branagh my first short film, Roadside. He’d just started making Frankenstein, and he invited me to do research for cast members. Aidan Quinn was playing a polar boat captain so I dug up ships’ logs at the Greenwich museum from all the boats who’d done that passage in that era. Tom Hulce was playing a doctor in Geneva, so I looked up the medical history of Geneva. Then I got a call: ‘would you like to do Bob’s?’ I met De Niro, asked what I could do for him, and he said, ‘I want to know about drunk Irishmen’. So I went out videotaping drunk Irishmen in Kilburn, almost getting myself mugged in the process. The concept behind De Niro’s monster was that it was a bit like a stroke victim. So I also went to stroke hospitals and interviewed stroke victims with their permission. And they would read the script, and I would tape them speaking. When I saw Frankenstein, I could recognise which of the patients I’d met was speaking when De Niro spoke. Can you see yourself making a horror in Brighton? Why not? The 13 Hrs writer, Adam Phillips, is my best mate, and he lives in Brighton too. Brighton is full of visual opportunities. I was up driving by the racecourse cemetery the other day. You’ve got that view over Brighton with all the gravestones in the foreground... And I have definitely looked at the sea and thought, ‘Yes! Jaws in Brighton!’ Maybe we could have some sort of pollution sludge monster. But I get sea sick... 13 Hrs is out now on DVD and Blu-ray. Actress Julie Graham talks to Latest 7 about being a patron for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice and why she’s looking forward to the Snowman Spectacular Ball
W
hen Latest 7 talks to Julie Graham, the Scottish-born actress is eagerly anticipating this year’s Snowman Spectacular Fundraising Ball. The event is a huge charity fundraiser for local children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House and takes place at the Brighton Hilton Metropole on Saturday 4 December. Raymond Briggs’ iconic images from the ever-popular story The Snowman have become synonymous with the ball, which returns for its third year, and Briggs, like Julie Graham, is a patron of the hospice. Their Snowman Ball is the most glamorous way to kick off the festive season. “Everyone gets dressed up to the nines,” Julie says. “I’ve got two step-daughters who are 13 and ten, who I took last year. We went out shopping for nice fancy clothes and they loved it!” The ball, of course, is also raising vital funds for a good cause. “Local businesses in Sussex are extremely generous in supporting the ball,” Julie continues. “But we need more businesses to get involved because they are the heart and soul of it – as well as individuals. I think every penny raised by individuals and businesses should be morally matched by the government. People should lobby their local MP; we've got a Green MP in Brighton now, maybe she'll have more of a say...” At present, less than 10 per cent of funding comes from the government, with fundraising events relied upon to keep the hospice running and continuing with their work. Last year’s ball raised £60,000 on the night, so their aim will be to top
that amount this year. Famous faces and fantastic entertainment make it a night to remember. Guests at this year’s ball will enjoy a three-course meal and entertainment in the form of magic and comedy from Paul Zenon and music from Still Drifting, featuring former lead singer of The Drifters, Ray Lewis. “They have a public auction with great lots,” Julie says. “They have celebrity chefs who will come and

Julie is always looking for opportunities – aside from the big fundraising events on the calendar – to raise money and awareness for the local hospice. “Local fundraisers are always the best,” she says. “Even in London it can be hard to ask them to do a whip round in the audience, because even though it’s a fantastic charity it's not in their area. I think people get more involved if they know it's a local charity in their community.” Julie Graham moved to Brighton from London 10 years ago and has two children with her husband, and has two step-daughters. “I’d had enough of living in London and felt I wanted to be close enough to work there. I grew up by the sea and always loved Brighton so it seemed like the natural place. Plus people are always really lovely and laid back here.” The actress is most recognised for her work on TV’s William And Mary. “That and Survivors,” she says, referring to her role as Abby Grant in the hit BBC show. The actress has currently swapped the TV cameras for the live stage: “I'm doing a play in a theatre in London, and I have about a month to go. I haven’t been on stage since before I had children, so it was pretty nerve wracking. I’d been wanting to do it for ages but just hadn’t found the right project and it’s also difficult with young children as a lot of it is touring.” Back in Brighton the star remains heavily involved in supporting the Arundel-based Chestnut Tree House. “The hospice has an amazing atmosphere and the people who work there are incredible. Paradoxically, it’s a very uplifting experience. You’re made to feel very welcome when you go there, so I would urge anyone to visit – the building is incredibly inspiring.” The hospice always need businesses and individuals to get involved. Supporting Chestnut Tree House through attending the Snowman Ball is a fantastic way to help the children and families in their care. “Apart from the fact that it is a great fundraiser, it’s also brilliant fun,” Julie adds. “They've always got great guests. Some of the families and the children from the hospice come along too. It’s a festive ball; it’s a time to dress up, and it’s also a great reminder about the amazing work the hospice is doing. t’s been quite a year for Brighton’s Baroque jewellers. They were named number 11 in Retail Jeweller magazine’s list of the country’s best independents, and now they have been listed in Professional Jeweller’s ‘Hot 100’. This is particularly pleasing for Pippa, Jason and Kyle, joint owners of Baroque, as they take pride in recognition from their industry peers. But Baroque have always been a bit special. Before founding the successful business, members of the team worked with well known brands including Graff and Theo Fennel. In a sense, they bring the best of London’s Bond Street to the South Coast but with their own Brighton twist. The thing I like most about Baroque is they are not stuffy or formal. They have a sense of fun and excitement about them but it’s always coupled with exceptional standards and attention to detail. value means they really have been hard at work lately. reakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so we are told. There are times when breakfast for me consists of toothpaste, and even that is taken in a hurry. But when I get the chance I love breakfast in all its forms from the light continental to a big full English. When I heard about Bonjour Breakfast I was fascinated; the idea of a fresh breakfast delivered to my door sounded too good to be true, but it was. It’s a simple process of visiting their website, choosing what you want and placing your order and delivery time. The only requirement is that you live in a BN1, BN2 or BN3 postcode. The variety on offer is huge, from teas and coffees, jams, honey and pickles, to pastries and porridge. They even offer champagne and newspapers! I made a broad sweeping selection and awaited the result... I can report that Bonjour Breakfast is a first-class idea that comes with brilliant service. When I specified 9am on a Sunday morning, 9am it was. The superb pastries were from Cocoa in Queens Road, a place which I already love. The fruit juices were delicious and the porridge was a revelation: no pan, no washing up and no need for a microwave. There was so much choice and best of all, if you spend £10 then delivery is free. For a personal treat that’s no more expensive than going to the greasy spoon for a fry-up. And what a great gift idea for a friend or loved one, having a top-notch breakfast delivered. Supper and a show Life can be a busy old affair for us here at the wonderful world of Latest. I can often be out and about at dawn, at my desk all day, and then in one of Brighton’s many venues for a show after dark. Fitting in supper can be a logistic nightmare – but not when I am at The Brighton Centre. For certain events they now offer a pre-show dining experience that certainly delivers. Ms McT and I were there to see The Pet Shop Boys and decided to avail
ourselves of the two course with a glass of wine for a very sensible £19.95 each. The restaurant is on the upper level and boasts one of the best views in Brighton, looking directly out to sea. With such a view this space should be a busy restaurant all year round. But would the food match up? I am delighted to say it went far beyond: my chicken in a chive sauce with excellent spinach and first class dauphinoise potato hit exactly the right spot and Ms McT’s salmon with potato salad and mixed leaves was just as good. The puddings were great too. The chef obviously has a sweet tooth and these dishes delivered. I could have spent a whole lot more money on food of this standard and been rushed off my feet to do so, but here we had a good meal in a leisurely manner and our table was reserved for the interval too. TF, Brighton When your body gears up to deal with stress, both mental and physical, two hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) are released to jump-start fats and carbohydrates in your body for quick energy. This reflects the way the human body functioned back in the days of our caveman ancestors, whose lives depended on how quick their “fight or flight” reactions were. Although we’re no longer running from mammoths or fighting rival tribes (our modern stresses are more mental), that biological programming is still there. Adrenaline increases your heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output and carbohydrate metabolism. Cortisol directs the necessary energy to meet the increased needs of your muscles or brain to
respond to the stress. With chronic stress, cortisol levels go up and remain high. The first thing to do is to sort out your diet; nobody can handle stress successfully if they are nutrient deficient.
Stick to the basics of good quality vegetables and fruits – at least six portions a day – with wholegrains like oats and brown rice and good quality proteins like fish, beans and legumes. Avoid sugar as this can aggravate stress levels by playing havoc with your glucose and insulin levels. Nutrients contained in a good diet can really help with coping with stress. Magnesium is nature’s tranquilliser. Zinc deficiency can lead to irritability, chronic anger, poor memory, loss of taste and smell, and reduced ability to handle stress. The B vitamins are involved in many stress and energy processes. Vitamin C is required for the adrenals and omega-3 for brain function. There are also some excellent stressrelieving nutrient and herbal preparations on the market, which your therapist could recommend to you. The second thing to do is to try and avoid the very things that are stressing you! And get plenty of exercise, as the endorphins released as a result are very stress relieving. Happy weight Unfortunately, it’s far easier to pile on the pounds this time of year. Hiding under layers of clothing, eating for warmth and comfort (not to mention the excess sweet treats over Halloween) all factor in. But being overweight, aside from putting more physical pressure on the body, can make us unhappy. “A person can feel out of control emotionally and physically if they’re overweight,” says NLP practitioner and hypnotherapist Jonathan Conway. A balanced diet and plenty of exercise may seem like the simple solution, but it’s not always easy. “Being overweight is a form of addiction similar to dependency on smoking or alcohol,” Jonathan identifies. “Sometimes it is simply a habit and other times it is a sign of a deeper psychological issue.” Hypnosis can be a useful aid to helping a person change the way their eating habits. “I also suggest ‘focused eating,” Jonathan continues. “Don’t eat whilst watching TV or reading, so there is more awareness of how much you eat. Also, eat slower and put your food on a smaller plate [conscious eating].” Try giving yourself some time between when you think you are hungry and the time you eat to be sure it’s an emotional hunger and not a physical one. This needs to be combined with a safe amount of exercise – often a person who is overweight has lost the motivation for exercise. Through hypnotherapy, you can accomplish your goal of becoming slimmer – for the longterm. Increased self confidence, motivation and a greater sense of wellbeing is the result.
Turn up the heat Doing something for the mind, body and soul is easily achieved through Bikram Yoga. opi Ear Candles therapy is an ancient Indian ritual to relax and revitalise the body. I meet Sonia Campos at Revitalise in Hove to find out more about the alternative treatment as it’s largely unknown in western culture. Ask people about Hopi Ear Candles and they may have an idea of what goes on in the therapy because of the name. Misconceptions about the therapy include it simply being to treat wax build-up. The function of the candles is purely physical, as Sonia explains, but it’s to do with sound, scent and vibration to boost wellbeing. They can help those who suffer with headaches, migraines, stress, blocked ears and sinuses. The result is improved relaxation and calm.

The Biosun earcandles Sonia uses are carefully handmade with natural ingredients. Measuring 22cm, the candles are meticulously created with natural cotton, bees wax, honey and aroma essences. How it works A general health Q&A is also conducted at this point, as it is not recommended for patients with a perforated eardrum, inflammation in the ear, or if the patients is on prescribed medication. I lie on my side and the candle is placed in the ear. The sound of the flame creates a vibration that penetrates the eardrum. Sonia explains how this in turn, vibrates the inner ear bones treating it like an inner ear massage. The Eustacian tubes and sinuses are also reached, meaning blockages are broken down (mucus and earwax), meaning the body has an easier job of flushing waste through the lymphatic system. This form of detoxifying is incredibly beneficial to the body, whilst the essential oils work to promote calm and further increase wellbeing. Each candle takes about 10 minutes to burn down. It is never painful or unpleasant (though Sonia tells me to speak up if I am ever uneasy). It’s a strange sensation, just because it is different. It is very comfortable though, and once I adjust to the gentle sound of the candle burning, I focus on the scent of the essential oils to help me switch off. At first I feel very aware – which may be down to having a flame burning that I cannot see in close proximity. Quickly though, I relax and enjoy the sensation and think about what’s happening to both the ears and sinuses. Andrew Kay talks to producer Nicola Haydn and director Áine King about their new production of Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Dracula is one of the most iconic figures of fiction. What does this production add to the already cluttered vampire genre? Áine: Dracula was a stage play before it was a film, so this production is bringing the genre fullcircle. The lunatic asylum is central to the story. Setting the action there helps to explore the story’s context: the institutional cruelty of that time, sexual repression, misogyny and social injustice. Does the play refer to Bram Stoker’s original or is this a work simply inspired by it? Áine: This is Bram Stoker’s story, but retold by the inmates at Stoneyfields Asylum. Perhaps they are the characters, driven mad by what has happened to them.
Vampires are hot news in American culture. Has this influenced you? Nicola: I don’t watch enough American TV to say whether it’s been influenced by current vampire fashion. I can guarantee it will be nothing at all like Twilight though! The production is set in the asylum. is the story told in hindsight or will we see enacted transformations and gore? Áine: The action is happening right now and transformations and gore a-plenty, although perhaps not where you’d expect.
How easy was it to ignore the ‘Hammer Horror’ adaptations? Áine: Impossible. Christopher Lee has been tapping at my window every night for weeks.
Do you think the Dracula story has a strong moral core? Is it an allegorical work? Áine: It’s a Victorian ‘ripping yarn’, not so much strong moral core as ‘stiff upper lip’. Allegorical? No. But Stoker worked for Henry Irving, who was by all accounts an absolute tyrant, controlling everyone around him and ‘bleeding them dry’.
Does your Dracula have white skin and slicked-back black hair or, like Francis Ford Coppola, have you been able to break the mould? Nicola: The treatment of vampires has moved away from the original Nosferatu stereotype. You’–ll have to see the show to find out!
Aine, you say this is the culmination of a piece you started thinking about when you were seven years old. Is Dracula really suitable for seven year olds? Áine: The nuns at primary school certainly didn’t think so; they were furious, and I was nearly expelled.

Stage Do you believe in vampires? Áine: The only vampires in this country are currently running it. There is a suggestion that the horror in the story is not real but imagined in the disturbed minds of the characters. Do you think that was Bram Stoker’s intention? Áine: No. Have you gone to great lengths to show horror or will it be psychological? Nicola: There will be horror, and I think it will be very scary – I'm scared during rehearsals! As with all good horror stories, the darkest fears tend to come from within, but it is still a horror story, rather than a psychological thriller Otherplace Productions has a growing reputation for excellence. Quite often, once we’ve decided on a production to stage, we'll see if it can fit at our venue, Upstairs at Three and Ten, and if it can’t then we'll seek out an alternative that it would work in. Sometimes, as with The Importance Of Being Earnest at the Grand, the idea seemed so obvious once we’d had it we knew it was right. It was a similar case with Dracula, in that the venue itself just called out to us. Do you have plans to tour or is it dependent on finding the right location in which to create the atmosphere required for it to work? Nicola: We would love to take this to London. But for that we’d need to find absolutely the right space. A great-nephew of John Coltrane, the sensational (if slightly out there) Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, is an experimental multigenre music producer and laptop musician who, as well as producing tonnes of music for commercial TV (which, let’s face it, is where the dosh is these days...) is a radical artist on the super-trendy Warp label. LOUD’N’PROUD Michael Gira has reactivated the notoriously loud Swans, ready to shake the city’s foundations
A
fter years of pursuing Angels Of Light and recording and producing a diverse roster of artists for his Young God label (including Devendra Banhart), Michael Gira has decided to re-activate his legendary group Swans. “This is not some dumb-ass nostalgia act,” he says. “I needed a way of moving forward, in a new direction, and it just so happens that reviving the idea of Swans is allowing me to do that.” For the uninitiated, Swans are an American outfit, active from 1982-1997, and initially emerging from the so-called ‘New York No Wave’ scene. They went on to release a number of cult ‘classics’ including Filth, Cop, Greed and Holy Money, and forged a reputation as being uncompromising and, above all, loud. I, for one, heard the loudest gig I have ever been to when I ventured to see this band at the University of London back in the late ’80s. To this day, I can still feel and HEAR it... “When I stopped Swans I wanted to do more song-based stuff,” says Michael from his homebase in the Catskills mountains of New York State. “All the years of loud music just wore me down. But I’ve got bored with that (his Angels of Light project) and so I decided to reinvigorate Swans!” Their new album, My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky (which features Devendra Banhart on one track, along with Gira’s three-year-old daughter...), is very much a Swans album – coruscating, dark, menacing and loud... not a million miles away from Nick Cave’s heavier and darker stuff.
“It’s not always loud and pumelling,” defends Gira. “Some of it has evolved into something much more subtle and dynamic. Some of it is even pastoral... But live – and I know it’s selfish of me – I still want to feel the bass, I want the guitars to ring and sustain, and to get that sound it has to be loud. It’s like a drug – it’s adddictive... it’s such a charge! “We would play one song, and play it for 12 hours,” he says of his working methods.. “We made a half-circle and the loudness and textures just grew and grew, like an escalating church sound. And then when we felt we had enough we pressed record...” However, the declining fortunes of CD and even digital sales is making life difficult for him and his record label. “Radiohead did a great thing,” he says sarcastically. They could afford to indulge,” he says in reference to their In Rainbows pay-what-youwant publicity stunt. “We need to teach people ethics; stealing is wrong, even from large corporations. I put in hundreds of hours of time in making a CD.” But live is where you get the full Swans experience, and Michael is looking forward to playing Brighton again. And what of the name? “Swans are majestic, beautiful looking creatures. With really ugly temperaments...” Swans, Concorde 2, Wednesday 27 October

Enjoy the city in unique style at White Night, Brighton and Hove’s all night cultural festival which takes place every year on the last Saturday in October when the clocks go back. Every event has been created specially for the festival, for one night only so mark the end of British Summer time and make the most of the extra hour of darkness. There are events at almost all of the city’s venues including the Basement, Komedia, Brighton Dome and Royal Pavilion, plus many outdoor events including surreal outdoor film in Church Street, ping pong in New Road, travelling street piano and Jazz at the Birdcage Bandstand. WHITE NIGHT INSTALLATIONS White Night has quickly established itself as a major arts event. This year, as well as a number of art galleries opening the doors to the public during the course of evening (including Fabrica, Brighton Media Centre Gallery, Phoenix and Brighton Museum & Art Gallery – where a group of young people are taking over the museum for the night, using projections, animation and photography, to show the museums collection in an entirely new light) four new public artworks have been chosen based on the theme of illumination. One of the commissions has been put together by an all-Brighton consortium of contemporary urban art organizations (Wet Paint Productions, Art Republic and Ink_d) who will be creating an interactive installation in Jubilee Square, illuminating street art in paint and pixels. Elsewhere, Claire Potter design is creating an at-sea art work inspired by the starlings and drawing attention to the birds’ threatened roosting site; Mini Murmuration will be a shimmering cloud of red lights generated by wind near the West Pier throughout the night. In a third commission, a group called Luminance will create and install an Epiphany Dome in the North Laine. A lavishly-lit geodesic dome will host interviews with passers-by about personal epiphanies. These will be projected during the night as the evening progresses. White Night marks the end of British Summer Time and aims to present the arts as a ‘reclaim of the streets’ and an alternative to drinking culture in the city centre. inner of this year’s Chortle Best Compere award, star of sitcom The Persuasionists, and Big Brother’s Big Mouth provocateur, Jarred Christmas is bringing his new show, Jarred Christmas Is Captain Curious to the Brighton Comedy Fringe. So, what prompted it? “It all sprung from when my daughter was born, having to fill in her birth certificate and putting stand-up comedian under ‘father’s occupation’. It was suddenly, like, well, this isn’t just messing around anymore. Basically, if I don’t get any work, my daughter starves. So that's the springboard for it. A bit of it is about naming my daughter and a bit of it is about stories that have got me to the point I am at today, as a stand-up comedian and a father. A lot of it is about being at school, and there’s a couple of stories about some encounters I've had on Big Brothers Big Mouth, which have been ridiculous. “The reason they brought me to Big Brother’s Big Mouth was because they wanted someone who was going to go on and take the mickey out of the whole thing a little bit. “The first episode I ever did was the day after Michael Jackson had died, so I told the evicted housemate the news and that caused quite a bit

of controversy. Then, just recently I had a run in with Makosi and have had hate mail from Makosi fans just because I took the mickey out of her. “I love playing Brighton. I don't know what it is, the crowds are just a bit more comedy savvy and a bit more into it, I guess. Capturing those times when you can be purely in the moment, this was Greg Davies’ autobiography told without the heavy bits, but with the gut laughs of the times further their own gut laughs in the re-telling. Lording the ridiculous and the childish, involving his unmistakably massive height, and the familiar family dynamics taken into the personal anecdote, this told his life in moments we all recognised from our own. Davies captured the unseen movement from childhood into adulthood, the confusion and the recognition that nothing inside has changed. A grown up, silly, highly enjoyable monster hug. A front row slightly too eager to divulge their tragicomic personal information provided Rich Hall with much fuel for his set. Granted, he wasn’t short on material – this was an eclectic show, ranging from Kraft’s takeover of Cadbury to Raoul Moat and even some adlibbed tunes. Hall is at his best when tearing his targets to shreds and he did this in spectacular style demolishing members of the American ‘Tea Party’ movement. His political material didn’t go down so well with the Friday night crowd but if you like a bit of politics with your improvised songs then Hall’s your man. Yes, it was a bunch of shouty boys, with sketches about body parts, bullying, and sex. But, these boys are more intelligent than that, and there was rarely a sketch that felt too obvious or lazy. While this had the suspicious whiff of a TV pilot (and, if we’re being suspicious, we may as well mention our jaded disbelief at the occasional ‘corpsing’ where the gents couldn’t continue due to apparently unscripted laughter) this is probably best summed up as silly jokes for smart people, with a fast-paced approach and clever gags that (rare, this) didn’t come across as cleverclever. With long queues outside and no room to swing a hepcat inside, Brighton’s hipsters, flipsters and finger-poppin’ daddios took to dancing on the tables at this CD launch party. Le KKC Orchestra from Toulouse went down well with their Gallic slant on the flavour-of-themonth electro swing sound. With programmed beats, live guitar and keyboard behind him, the singer/rapper delivered an exuberant set that went down a treat. Things calmed down after midnight with the DJ seemingly mixing a selection of old jazz tunes over the same backbeat. At 1am the joint was still jumping with the cool kids cutting a rug to a Cab Calloway number. Brighton Ballroom, 15 October JJJJJ Steve Clements

Remember the 22-20s? They were the guys who caused one of the last proper A&R ‘scrambles’ way back in 2003. The Lincolnshire lads put out a live EP and recorded an album with Primal Scream’s producer. Then, just two years later, they disappeared without a trace. After a three year break they’re back, picking up right where they left off, landing guns blazing, in Brighton. Still sounding like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s younger brothers, they played tracks from new album Shake/Shiver/Moan along with a few crowd-pleasing oldies like debut single ‘Such A Fool’. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
Rap’s original eco-warriors returned with a pared-down line-up. Still fronted by the diminutive Speech, the first few songs displayed a rockier sound compared to their earlier work. With African chanting, heavy bass and wah-wah guitar, the band was a funk force to be reckoned with and backing singer, Tasha Larae’s gospel voice was a great addition. Most of the crowd looked old enough to remember their groundbreaking debut album first time and, as expected, the biggest cheers were for the old hits. After ‘Fishin 4 Religion’ and ‘Ease My Mind’, a celebratory ‘Mr Wendal’ segued seamlessly into ‘People Everyday’ to round off a great night. Coalition, 16 October JJJJJ Steve Clements

STEWART LEE: VEGETABLE STEW

tewart Lee is touring the country, trying out material for his new TV series that will go out next year. This show, a part of that tour, was no new gags night but a carefully structured set, which he characteristically outlined from the off as being on three topics: charity, Adrian Chiles and politics. Although, he pointed out, the material on Adrian Chiles will not be seen on television due to the recently announced rules of the BBC barring attacks on individuals. So that was a one-off just for us... Lee’s vitriol is always appreciated, and Chiles wasn’t the only one under attack. There was a fantastic story about our Prime Minister in his youth, framed in a not dissimilar way to Lee’s considering of Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond last year. This provided a wonderful pay-off for all and a nostalgic reward for stalwart Stew fans. A delightful trip between grandad stories, charity boasts, Japanese monsters and a celebration of crisps – this was hardly a single topic, and more a fantastic Walter Mitty tale, suspending our disbelief seamlessly sashaying around its broad title, picking up further laughs along the way. Lee’s storytelling and considerations kept his audience rapt, trusting from experience that each lengthy set-up would hit pay dirt. They did.
Throughout the show Lee deconstructed his comedy. Of particular fun were the elements when he addressed critics’ claims that he doesn’t tell jokes, and when he used his supposed librarian past to deliberately heavy-handedly parallel his present. His mocking recognition of critics’ problems with his style of comedy and delivery falls on home ground ears, as an audience already attuned laughs with him at them. To write plainly, he went down a storm. Stewart Lee is an ever evolving comic, keeping himself and his fans forever on the move, avoiding the stale. His active mind is what attracts his audience and he gives the impression of amusing himself as much as anyone else staring up at him on the stage. The closest to any personal material he included in the show was in the ‘politics’ section. He remembered stand up in the late ‘80s, when he first started out, and the ‘alternative’ brand comics were claiming. He still is an alternative to the main throng of comics; you’re hardly likely to find him closing Krater on a Friday night. But he’s filling up the Brighton Dome Concert Hall, implying that this ‘alternative’ too is gaining greater momentum. Lee finished with a song. A new direction. Still funny. Like a comedy shark, he stayed sharp as he kept moving on. Victoria Nangle

id you see the recent film Whip It, starring Drew Barrymore? It was about a group of girls playing an underground and aggressive sport involving skates and an impressive haul of padding. The sport was called Roller Derby. It originated from America but there are 50 teams now in the UK, with the London Roller Girls the most revered. Back in February, Brighton’s own Roller Derby team were set up and decided to name themselves the Brighton Rockers. Think of a game, like rugby, with the idea to get one player (Jammer) to the opposing teams’ ‘end’ on roller skates, with a fair amount of body contact to avoid this goal (point) being achieved. Basically, ice hockey without sticks. Or ice. To say I was worried about bruises would be an understatement. I nearly backed out when informed beforehand I would need to buy a gum guard. I have never taken part in an activity that required any kind of dental protection. I wasn’t to need the guard in the end, and I was lent all the rest of the required kit and padding, which took 10 minutes to on! No one is allowed to take part (very sensibly) without a helmet, elbow pads, wrist pads and kneepads. There wasn’t much left un-padded. I even got to borrow an official T-shirt complete with nickname: ‘Pain-a-Doll’. I’d skated a lot as a child (underage roller discos featuring mainly the song ‘Night Train’ by Kadoc were the rage in the ’90s, trust me) so it came back pretty easily. First up, Brighton Rocker Sophie took me through the basic moves. A single knee fall meant ducking down onto one knee to stop, and I’m sure you can work out how a double knee fall moves on from that. I was apprehensive at first, but the kneepads meant I could barely feel the sports hall fall. Throwing myself around and not getting hurt? I was starting to see the appeal. According to the girls, the most frequent injuries are to the knees, which take the brunt of your weight as you lunge to the ground at speed – not a very fast speed in my case. Brighton Rocker Kristina showed me a snap of her biggest ever bruise after the lesson. It looked like a brown and blue dinner plate on her thigh. I did suffer one injury – I broke a fingernail. It didn’t seem worth mentioning. To try out Roller Derby and get past beginner stage takes around 12 weeks. The first lesson is free but only if you have the correct kit (padding and skates can be picked up for £100). It’s great for skate fans, team sport enthusiasts and anyone that thinks Tony Hawk is cool. At the end, the most experienced Brighton Rocker, ‘Bash’, complimented me: “Pretty good. Next time you come we should get you trying out hitting.” Hitting? Oh yeah. The game. The ‘contact’ part. Time for me to get my pads off. The Trip BBC2, 10pm This new comedy series sees Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon united again. When Steve is commissioned by a national newspaper to review half a dozen restaurants he decides to have fun with it and plans a trip around the North of England with his girlfriend. She then hops it. Time to call Rob to join the adventure.
