Award-winning Beautiful Thing writer Jonathan Harvey discusses his return to theatre with Canary – the ‘big gay play’ which has been taking the country by storm

L7 Don’t miss...

From Johnny Cash’s besuited pot-shots in The Baron And The Kid to Scorsese’s The Color of Money and 1961’s definitive The Hustler, there’s essentially nowt cooler than pool. (We’ll forget about lesser known musical-horror Billy The Kid And The Green Baize Vampire, although it does have a very cool title). So we were pleased to hear about the opening of Rock & Roller, a new vintage American-inspired restaurant and pool bar, which is bringing a hint of New York to the Waitrose-end of Western Road. The subject of this week’s cover feature has five pool tables as well as serving on-theme food and cocktails. You may wish to bring your own smog. Just call us Minnesota Fats. Gay rights activist Peter Tatchell famously commented that ‘Women and gay people are the litmus test of whether a society is democratic and respecting human rights – we are the canaries in the mine’. Jonathan Harvey’s new play (which arrives at Theatre Royal Brighton next week) takes its title from the latter and its subject matter from half a century of gay history, and has been getting fantastic reviews on its UK tour. In the L7 Interview, Harvey chats about bigotry, complacency and Corrie, while Andrew Kay catches a preview of Canary for Stage. It’s great to see so much exciting new work at the Theatre Royal lately – see Reviews for our verdict on rising director Jamie Lloyd’s Salome (which, if you missed it, featured the biblical Dance of the Seven Veils performed as an amateur lapdance accompanied by a giant ghetto blaster with a suggestively long aerial). Also this issue: beer, folk, free Pet Shop Boys tickets, Brighton’s own award-winning hairdresser Gary Forde, a furore over the ‘Cowgirl’ dancers infiltrating family cricket, and how to banish unwanted body fuzz for good.

The neighbour seems apprehensive, as if I’ve handed him a live grenade, or a baby with his nose and the eyes of a girl he met in a bar in Saigon. “You really didn’t have to do that,” he says. “It’s my pleasure. If it hadn’t been for you and your...” “She’s my girlfriend!” he blurts out, faster than Rik Waller chasing the squeak of a dessert trolley’s wheel. Lord knows why heterosexual men always get so edgy when I bring them flowers. “Girlfriend then,” I smile, in what I hope is a non-predatory fashion. “If the two of you hadn’t heard me screaming for help, I might have never been found. You would’ve only known I’d moved in when a funny smell started emanating from my door. You know, and then the police would kick the door in to find flies everywhere and mould

crawling up my muesli. Like on The Bill?” My neighbour looks at me in silence. Back in my apartment and giving the bathroom door a wide berth (having wedged it wide open immediately after my dramatic rescue, I now have no intention of closing it again without a fire-crew on stand-by), I decide to call H. “I’m feeling irrationally aggrieved against my neighbour,” I tell her, “and I need you to snap me out of it.” “Can it wait? I’m not near a plug.” “Ugh, can you please get a mobile that is actually mobile? One quick question then. If you rescued your neighbour Ann from her en-suite and she bought you flowers as thanks, wouldn’t you be a little... I don’t know, grateful?” Down the line comes the sound of quiet deliberation. “You mean Ann who I hate?” “Not the point.” “Let me get this straight. Someone helped you out of a potentially dangerous situation and you want them to thank you for thanking them?” “In a nutshell.” “Yes, nuts is right.” H sighs. “I honestly don’t know what you want me to say.” I stare down from my lounge window at the nearby council estate my friends and I have taken to calling Murderville. As I watch, a gang of youths hares out of a cul-de-sac, baseball bats in their hands. Further down the street, where I can just about see a figure lying half on and half off the pavement, people have started to emerge from their houses. Soon there will be an ambulance, police. I rub my eyes. “How do you know if you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?” I ask.

days of headlines with Phil Mills

Sarah Payne killer’s sentence reduced, acupuncturist’s ‘family’ photo, and breakfasts for bike users

T

he family of murdered Sussex schoolgirl Sarah Payne was enraged with news that her killer's 50-year minimum tariff has been reduced by 10 years. Paedophile Roy Whiting, 51, was jailed for life for kidnapping and murdering eightyear-old Sarah in West Sussex in 2001. Her family condemned Mr Justice Simon's decision and said Whiting should be given no consideration or prospect of release. The judge concluded that the “appropriate” minimum term was a period of 40 years. Sarah's mother Sara, who has campaigned against paedophiles and was made an MBE for services to child protection in 2008, said afterwards: “As long as sex offenders walk the streets I will always be there.” Meanwhile, Sussex Police have increased training for officers to deal with dangerous dogs following news they are being called to an average of two incidents a week. There're likely to be even more dog incidents this week when the smell of freshly fried sausages wafts through the city from Brighton Station. It's all part of a drive to get passengers to use bikes for the rest

of their journey. It's the first time Brighton & Hove City Council has hosted a bike breakfast at the station as part of Bike Week (www.journeyon.co.uk). The event is one of three bike breakfasts across the city to encourage residents to cycle to work, but Latest 7 notices another incentive – wild flowers in the central reservation along Lewes Road. What a colourful idea – almost heaven scent one might say. And speaking of heaven sent, how about Yvonne Darnell who has more would-be grandkids than you could shake a rattle at. Yvonne, who runs Unity Acupuncture in Burgess Hill, got together with mums she has helped get pregnant for a giant family photo. Studies claim acupuncture can help women while they are undergoing assisted reproduction therapies including in vitro fertilisation (IVF) as well as those trying to conceive naturally. Yvonne boasts a high percentage success rate from her treatments

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears on the Chattri memorial

O

ne thing you can always guarantee with Brighton and Hove is that, whatever the time of year, there is always something slightly out of the ordinary going on to capture the imagination! For example, you may well have been wondering last weekend what on earth a fleet of buses was doing parked on Madeira Drive. It wasn’t a mass ‘sit in’ by the city’s bus drivers but a rally to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Brighton and Hove Bus Company. By all accounts it was a really interesting day and all

that combine emotional support with “energy-balancing”. And not a sign of a stork anywhere. More strike action against cuts at Sussex University is to be followed by a “Lost Highway” evening at The Brunswick in Brighton on 9 July. Transport union RMT and public services union PCS are throwing their collective weight behind the ‘Stomp The Cuts’ night. Cuts could mean more reliance on charities so bravo to the 36 brave volunteers who walked over fire on Brighton seafront to raise money for Adventure Unlimited, which helps disadvantage youngsters with outdoor activities and education events run by previously unemployed adults. Six volunteers were from Martin Searle Solicitors, the event sponsors. Lastly – and at long last – the sun and heat returned to Brighton beach, much to the pleasure of sunbathers and swimmers. Rather ironically, the city council responded by announcing new measures to shift the snow should we get dumped on again. There was much criticism levelled their way, so in future there will be “increased flexibility to working practices, including support for call-centre and gritting staff, as well as increased coordination between organisations in identifying and treating problem areas. “There will also be money spent on a more modern fleet of gritting vehicles, a review of gritting routes, establishment of ‘drop-off’ gritting points and better communication with residents.” I can hardly wait. Was it right to reduce Roy Whiting’s sentence?

money raised went to local charities, including the Martlets Hospice and The Argus Appeal. The buses have certainly been a real success story in terms of transport in this city and it was good to celebrate. Another great example was the service held last weekend at the Chattri memorial on the Downs to commemorate the massive contribution of the Indian soldiers who fought on the Western Front during the First World War. Many of the 12,000 or so Indian soldiers who were wounded in combat were hospitalised at sites around Brighton. These included York Place School, the Dome, the Corn Exchange and the Royal Pavilion. As I have mentioned before in this column, the City’s Indian connection is the subject of a fascinating new exhibition at the Pavilion and is well worth a visit if you are interested in history.

Dear Latest 7, I run The Fair Trade shop and the not-for-profit www.lovethatstuff.co.uk. My aim is to have a commercial partnership that allows a huge amount of workers to exercise basic choice, through work and a receive a fair price for their goods. Lily, my daughter, and I went to India and Nepal in February to visit three of the producer groups we buy from and, thanks to the Marina shop, now in its third year, we have been able to bring on board another two groups in Nepal and another great project in Bihar, the poorest state in India. Women's Skill Development Project in Pokhara make beautiful vegetable dyed, handloomed cotton bags; the other group is Children Nepal in Pokhara who support many poor and at risk orphans and poor children – they make toys and dolls. The new project in Bihar is shell jewellery and button-making. The things we experienced were exceptional, like looking after AIDS orphans in a nearby tribal area and supporting a local school there and giving money, rice and blankets to those too old to work or those unable to work. Having the shop at the Marina is invaluable because we can see what products are popular, what price ranges are good for people, and raise funds to put in orders. So well done the Marina! The Chattri memorial itself was unveiled on the Downs at Patcham by the Prince of Wales in 1921 and the memorial service has taken place there for as long as I can remember. It is one of the city’s lesser known attractions but I would thoroughly recommend a trip up there – it is a lovely tranquil setting, befitting of its significance. Finally, Tuesday is the official ‘naming ceremony’ for Brighton and Hove Albion’s new Community Stadium at Falmer and I am delighted that Amex have come forward as sponsors. They are one of the biggest employers in the city and have just committed their long-term future to Brighton and Hove. I can’t wait for the start of the 2011/12 season when the first game will be played there!

Ó TO BE IN WITH A CHANCE TO WIN,

It had to happen, really: with the football World Cup well and truly upon us, Three Brians’ would-be England anthem ‘We Are Eng-er-land!’ finally makes its way to the top spot. Taking second place, the polished bass-heavy dance/hip-hop crossover of Tubba 3 Ply’s ‘C’mon’ wouldn’t sound out of place in the mainstream chart rundown. Electro-infused Brightonian rockers Shoot The Dead snatch the number three spot with ‘NW1’, while the quality ambient soundscape of Chris Harvey’s ‘Graviton’ takes four and Tenek’s dark electro-pop blast ‘No Time For Fighting’ hits five.

10 SNAP SHOTS

Snap Shots Photographer Diana Frangi captures the faces and places that define our city. This week: award-winning hairdresser Gary Forde

I love my job, I get to make people look and feel fabulous! It was one of my clients, Kelly, who nominated me for the Nation’s Favourite Hairdresser Award. There were 19,000 hairdressers in the competition and ten finalists so I was fortunate to get it. The votes were about skill and the relationship between the hairdresser and the clients. It was very exciting being there from start to finish, especially meeting all the other finalists. We were made to feel very special and it was a great honour to receive the award

Owner of Forde Hair, a quirky, intimate and stylish hair salon on St James’ Street, Kemp Town, Gary Forde recently took home the Nation's Favourite Hairdresser Award 2010. The star-studded ceremony took place at Home House in London last month, with TV presenter and Model Emma Willis and her hairdresser, Head & Shoulders celebrity stylist Melissa Brown.

Brighton based model Phil Grundy is to be one of the new faces of shaving giants Gillette as he has just secured his place in one of their TV ad campaigns. The top brand has previously used huge sporting greats such as David Beckham, Roger Federer and golf bad boy Tiger Woods. But it wasn't all plain sailing for Phil, as he needed to sort his wonky teeth out before attending the casting for the ad. Phil went to see celebrity dentist Dr Bob Khanna, and after wearing an invisible brace for three months, he secured the coveted ad campaign which is soon to air – smiles all round!

KATIE’S WEEK I

TV and radio presenter and now restaurant owner Dermot O'Leary is opening another Fishy Fishy site, this time in Poole, Dorset. Dermot co-owns Fishy Fishy restaurant in the Lanes with a couple of pals. The place is doing so well he is expanding the seafood eatery further along the coast.

PORTER PAMPERED Gail Porter was in Brighton last week to enjoy a day of pampering courtesy of Julie at The Lanes Health and Beauty. Julie has recently been filming for a TV show and Gail was invited to take part in the very last show. The star, who until recently was suffering from Alopecia, was sporting a new rather gorgeous blonde crop and looked lovely and relaxed after all her beauty treatments.

t has been a mixed week for our very own home grown glamour puss Katie Price. Last weekend Katie was joined by 15 of her friends on her hen do. This was of course not a traditional type of hen do as, firstly, Katie is already married – having tied the knot with Celebrity Big Brother winner, Alex Reid back in February in Las Vegas. Secondly the venue of choice was not entirely traditional, but the Nilam Patel Botox and Beauty clinic in Milton Keynes – doesn't sound very glam Katie! All Katie's pals wore specially customised black T-shirts with their names on the back, while emblazoned with diamante on the front were the words ‘Kate's Hen Do!’ They all arrived in a black stretched Hummer limousine and then posed for the paps before entering the clinic. Ex-Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton attended, and carried Katie's daughter Princess into the venue. The couple are planning a second private ‘blessing’ style wedding in the next few weeks, which will be attended by their close friends and family. Speaking to TV show This Morning earlier this year, Katie said: “We are doing a blessing in the summer because we want all our family there. Obviously [Alex's] mum would like to see her son get married ... so yeah, I can't wait.” What Katie will be wearing at the wedding still remains a closely guarded secret, but it looks like she won't be dabbing one of her own perfume ranges behind her ears, as stockists Superdrug are reportedly taking the perfume off the shelves. Katie currently has two fragrances on the market, Stunning and Besotted, but according to recent reports the high street chain claims that the perfumes have not reached ethical trading standards. Our exclusive pics show Katie arriving at the TV Baftas with pal and make-up artist Gary Cockerill – my snapper told me she was over half an hour late!!

Y

es! It’s that time again! ‘The beauteous game’ is about to engulf us all in a frenzy of banal jingoism, and everyone’s saying “I think it’ll be our year this year, I really do” despite the fact they said exactly the same thing four years ago, and look how that turned out. But, if you’re the sort of middle-class person who likes to sit in the pub watching ‘the match’ on a huge telly screen while sipping lager slightly self-consciously, and falling to his knees while shouting ‘Yessss!’ shortly after everyone else every time one of the millionaires on screen scores a goal, you probably need a few pointers, which we are happy to provide... ALGERIA – Fairly poor. Will almost certainly knock England out. ARGENTINA – Quite good aren’t they? Run by a military junta, so they’re probably pretty disciplined. Might win. AUSTRALIA – No idea. Don’t they have different rules? If they’re allowed to pick the ball up and the other teams aren’t then they’ll probably win. BRAZIL – Are they still good? Maybe not as good as they once were. Still much better than us though. CÔTE D’IVOIRE – Really insignificant so will probably beat England in at least one game. DENMARK – Nope. Sorry – it’s gone. ENG-ER-LAND – Sure to get knocked out by someone mediocre before the quarter finals.

FRANCE – Can’t remember. Didn’t they win recently? GERMANY – Ha ha. We beat them. 44 years ago. Two world wars and one World Cup! Yesss! Will probably win this time. GHANA – A bit rubbish. Will probably be the ones to knock England out. GREECE – Probably got a bit on their minds at the moment. ITALY – Er...quite good, aren’t they? It’s the sort of country that tends to have a good national team anyway. MEXICO – Genuinely no idea. NETHERLANDS – Er... NEW ZEALAND – Blimey. PARAGUAY – Also not brilliant. Thus may thrash England. SLOVENIA – Or is it Slovakia? Always get those two mixed up. SOUTH AFRICA – Oh. They’re hosting it, aren’t they? Maybe that’ll give them an advantage. SPAIN – One of those teams who are pretty good, yet never win. Unlike England, who aren't pretty good, yet never win. SWITZERLAND – Probably pretty healthy, so may win. UNITED STATES – Is David Beckham playing for them, or did we just imagine that? If he is then they might win we suppose, always supposing that David Beckham’s still good. URUGUAY – Also not very good. Will knock England out if Ghana don’t.

L7 INTERVIEW

13

AN EPIC STRUGGLE From Beautiful Thing to Corrie, award-winning writer Jonathan Harvey has given voice to a gay generation. Now, with new musical play Canary, he’s travelling back in time. He chats to Bella Todd about history, complacency, and his fears for gay rights under the new government Did you set out with Canary to write ‘a big gay play’? I did really, bizarrely enough. I wanted to write a big sweeping epic about what it was like to be gay in this country over the last 50 years; to contextualise where we are today and tell the stories of the people who fought for our relative liberties and freedoms. It was an ambitious piece, I knew that from the word go, and hopefully I’ve pulled it off to some degree. How much of it were you able to draw from your own memories? I've always written plays about the gay experience. When I was younger I wrote things like Beautiful Thing, about first love and coming out, and the older I got the more I looked at how life was different for younger gay people. I thought there was an interesting story to tell about that. And losing friends to Aids in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and seeing other friends surviving with the advent of combination therapy. I started reading up on it all and then realised there were some brilliant stories to tell about what happened before me – things like aversion therapy and the illegality in the ‘60s and the GLF [Gay Liberation Front] in the ‘70s. I did lots and lots and lots of research, more than I would usually do. Do you think there is a need to reconnect with gay history – are we in danger of forgetting the fight? Absolutely, and it’s been really interesting talking to the young gay actors in the cast who say, God, I had no idea all this had happened, thank you for telling me about my history. I think there’s a complacency. When I was in my 20s we had Thatcher in charge,

and Clause 28 and the response to Aids unified the gay community and we had something to fight against. Certainly on a national scale there’s nothing to do about that at the moment... and let’s not even go to Malawi [where homosexuality is illegal]! And also I think there’s a complacency about safer sex and HIV that certainly I didn't have as a younger person. It’s become endemic in the gay scene now. I did sometimes think, is this a dated play, do we really need this? But as I was finishing it off I heard about the boy in Liverpool attacked and nearly killed leaving a gay pub. Bigotry and prejudice hasn't vanished. It’s just taken a slightly different form.

“As I was finishing this play I heard about the boy in Liverpool attacked and killed leaving a gay pub. Bigotry hasn’t vanished”

Thatcher and Mary Whitehouse (both of whom appear in Canary) were known enemies. Did you ever encounter homophobia from unexpected quarters? When I was 19 at university I’d not come out to my halls of residence yet, but I told them I had two mates coming up from Liverpool and said they were a gay couple. Slowly I noticed people removing their stuff from the communal kitchen in case gay people touched it. Which made it rather difficult for me to come out... Beautiful Thing has become a modern classic... Oh I know, it was even on the GCSE syllabus for a while. It’s on in Paris at the moment, it’s on tour in America, it’s about to go on some other national tour with another company... I feel it was a life time ago, really. I was 24 when I wrote it, on the end of my bed, on breaks from being a teacher. I'm very proud of it. But it’s a bit weird going to see it ‘cos it’s not that autobiographical, but it’s like opening a diary from 15 years ago and going, oh God, so that’s how I felt, I like the sound of my own voice! You created Coronation Street’s first openly gay storyline in 2004 – did it feel groundbreaking? It did really, just because it was Coronation Street and they'd never had that before. It dragged the show kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Beautiful Thing was first performed at the Bush Theatre to 80 people. To write my first episode of Corrie with Todd saying he was gay, which got an audience of 13million or so – you can't really not see the power of that. The club Heaven is central to Canary’s ‘80s scenes – what are your memories of the place? It was incredible and the lights and soundsystem were fantastic. I mean, I came from Liverpool where there were gay clubs but I can imagine what it must be like for a small town boy running away to London and discovering this magical place. It opened in 1979 – to think how liberating it must have been to have a place where you could just go and be yourself, and a good club to boot. Historically, people had always had to hide in the shadows, and here was this vast place that was brightly lit; a whole other country I suppose. I’d never seen that many gay people in one place. You got the title from gay rights activist Peter Tatchell’s famous quote: "Women and gay people are the litmus test of whether a society respects human rights. We’re the canaries in the mine". How well do you think women and gay people will be treated under the new coalition government? My history is thinking the Tories don’t care about gay people so I'm keeping an open mind; hoping for the best, expecting the worst. The people at the top now in the Tory party voted against the equalisation of the age of consent, against gay adoption, against repealing Clause 28... y'know, I'm very cautious. It wouldn’t surprise me if things take a step back. Canary is at Theatre Royal Brighton from 29 June to 3 July. See Stage preview p23

hotographs and narrative telling the story of a woman’s quest to find a husband won the top award at the University of Brighton’s Burt Brill & Cardens Graduate Show 2010 ‘Hook, Line and Sinker’. More than 15,000 visitors to the university’s galleries in Grand Parade, Brighton, voted on their favourite exhibit during the week-long show. The award was presented to Kayla Stoate, Photography BA(Hons) student. “I’m amazed and thrilled. I really didn’t expect it,” she says. “I really like writing and wanted to create a fusion of narrative and photography to tell the story of a woman falling in love and her journey from there.” The award was presented to Kayla by our very own Andrew Kay (pictured below, left), along with David Edwards, managing partner of Burt Brill & Cardens – Brighton-based solicitors and the show’s sponsor. “Tutors thought Kayla’s work was really good too, so it shows the public is a pretty good judge,” David says. Transformed into the biggest art gallery in the South East of the UK, the Faculty of Arts played host to work from a range of 25 courses from fashion and 3D design to photography. THE AMERICAN DREAM

Live the Rock & Roller lifestlye at Brighton’s first American restaurant & pool bar

B

righton is known for its individuality. Therefore, it only seemed right that the first restaurant/pool bar to call Sussex home should open in the city. In the two months since Rock & Roller exploded onto the scene, it’s quickly won an army of loyal fans, livening up Western Road with its delicious mix of American-inspired food, great beers, fine wines and spirits, and not forgetting fantastic cocktails. Dedicated attention to design detail and carefully chosen funky furniture have been teamed with a menu inspired by the best cuisine the States has to offer, and one that firmly captures the Rock & Roller spirit. It’s relaxed, fun and downright tasty! Dine downstairs and you’ll be immersed in a super chilled, laid back atmosphere, surrounded by the most amazing vintage furniture, hand picked and dating back to the Art Deco period, with some pieces originating from as early as 1900. Venture upstairs and prepare to enter pool heaven. With five tables to choose from, it’s the perfect spot to shoot some pool with your friends,

over a few beers and a bite to eat. Why not join the pool loyalty scheme? Play for nine hours and get a tenth hour free. The atmosphere is relaxed and harks back to a bygone era, with a comfortable and large seating booth, original ’50s milk bar stools, and big cinema screen playing old movies. Rock & Roller is open throughout the day from 9.30am until midnight (until 1am on weekends). Head down and sample the all-American breakfast – three eggs cooked any style with a range of extras including bacon, sausage or a 5oz steak – among other scrumptious choices. The lunchtime/dinner menu includes classics, like colossal home-made burgers (chicken, beef and two types of vegetarian), locally-smoked ribs and melt-in-the-mouth steaks from the grill. Rock & Roller burgers have already taken Brighton by storm, with one journalist adding: “Warning:

these towering burgers are not for the faint hearted so make sure you’re hungry.” There are plenty of lighter snacks available, including Maryland crab cakes and a number of exciting salads. The kids menu is proving popular with mums stopping by with little ones for lunch. So whether you’re looking for a place to hang out with friends, during the week or at the weekend, Rock & Roller fits the bill every time –for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a light snack and a coffee. It’s currently cocktail season down at Rock & Roller, with a 2-4-1 deal on Martinis from Monday to Wednesday, 6pm to 9pm, until the end of June. It’s time to gather your friends together... why should Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda have all the fun?! And Rock & Roller hasn’t forgotten the city’s many students either. You need a break from all that studying so step away from the books and race down to Rock & Roller where they’re offering students a super deal of a burger and a pint for just £8.95 when you present your NUS card. The Rock & Roller lifestyle is easy to live by with great value and it’s good fun too. Rock & Roller, 95 Western Road, Brighton, BN1 2LB, 01273 710014, www.rock8roller.co.uk

ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK 17

Food & Drink Andrew Kay attends the launch of the Sussex Food Awards and reveals the latest news from the Brighton Foodies

Vote now! N

ew Minister of State for Agriculture and Food, Jim Paice MP, helped kick off public voting for the Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2010/11 at the South of England Show. The awards, organised by Natural PR, are all about supporting local farmers and producers and the businesses which sell and promote their produce in the local market place. Award categories this year cover the full food chain, starting with producers, including Sussex Food Producer of the Year, sponsored by Musgrave Retail Partners, looking for the best producer of a single ingredient or prepared food product; and Sussex Drink Producer of the Year, sponsored by Natural PR, looking for the producer of a soft drink or alcoholic beverage that has taste and quality shining through. At the retail end, categories include Best Sussex Food/Farm Shop, sponsored by Mayo Wynne Baxter, looking for the best farm shop, local produce delivery or independent high street food shop; and Sussex Butcher of the Year, sponsored by D. Leonard & Co and Natural Farms, seeking a top quality butcher which includes local farmers’ meat. Best Sussex Farmers’ Market, this year sponsored by the Lewes brewers Harveys, is for the most popular farmers’ market, which offers an exciting and varied range of local produce and an experience which shoppers really enjoy. At the plate end, the Best Sussex Eating Experience – sponsored by A Taste of Sussex – could be a restaurant, hotel, pub or café which uses and promotes mainly Sussex producer and offers consistently high quality food in an enjoyable atmosphere. All the above categories are open for voting until 1 October. Two special categories require early votes by 9 July, for judges to select a shortlist from for further public voting from mid-August until 1 October. These are: Sussex Farmer of the Year, sponsored by Knill James, for the Sussex farmer who has made the biggest contribution to promoting local produce in the county; and Sussex Young Chef of the Year, sponsored by Blue Spark Organisation with City College Brighton & Hove. This category seeks a chef aged 16 to 25 who is working or studying in Sussex, and is able to plan, prepare and present an excellent menu based on local produce. Chairman of the Judges, Clive Beddall OBE, said: “Our eight categories acknowledge every aspect of the agri-food chain, from farmers through to retailers and food service outlets. The Awards continue to grow in popularity, with over 9000 people voting for 300 local businesses last year. For 2010 we are introducing a new and easy to use online voting website: www.sussexfoodawards.biz. Voting is open until 1 October 2010 and the awards are presented at the 'Sussex foodie event of the year' – the annual awards dinner, held at the East Sussex National Golf Resort & Spa in January 2011. Local nursery school children, dressed as bees to raise awareness of the plight of the honey bee, started the voting at the official launch of the South of England Show. www.sussexfoodawards.biz

FOODIE LEADERS ANNOUNCED Over 1600 votes have been registered in the Brighton & Hove Foodie Awards in the past two months, since it was launched as part of the city’s spring food festival, according to organisers Natural PR. Every second Friday of the month, the Foodie leaders – those who have received the most votes from the public so far – are announced on Juice FM

by DJ Andrea Fox and myself, until voting closes in September. The final winners will be presented with their awards during the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival. In May, Terre A Terre has streaked into the lead, bumping Food For Friends into second place, demonstrating that the city’s top vegetarian restaurants have loyal followers, and Hotel du Vin has risen to third position, dropping Drake’s off the leaders board. Best Food Pub, The Ginger Pig, is still storming ahead in the food pub category, with newcomer to the leaders board, Pub du Vin, racing into second place this month, moving the Sussex Yeoman into third place and knocking the Preston Park Tavern and The Hop Poles off the leaders’ board. There’s been an interesting turn-around in the Best Café category: the same three are still in the lead, but now Temptation has the number one position, followed by Ground, with Bill’s now in third place – all three are neck and neck! There is no change in the Best Food Shop category: the wonderful Infinity Foods is still managing to hold its lead, the brilliant Taj is in second place, followed by the scrumptious Angel Food Bakery. “The huge numbers of people who have voted in the first two months have confirmed that the Foodies are set to become a success,” said Paula Seager, MD of Natural PR. “We want to thank everyone who has voted and all the food outlets which are so enthusiastically taking part. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our city’s great food. “But we want to urge everyone to keep latest 7 supports it up – food outlet owners please keep encouraging your customers to vote for you, and come on people who live in Brighton & Hove! – you must have a favourite restaurant, food pub, café and food shop, so please vote now!” Vote and keep up to date on the leaders board at www.brightonfoodawards.com have you voted yet? – everyone has one vote per category. brightonfoodawards.com

aser treatment used to summon up images of Blofeld quipping with James Bond and massive space stations. Not so any more. These days it’s much easier to understand that it’s simply using the power of light in a non-scary and non-invasive way. And compared to waxing, discomfort is most definitely not an issue for this modern age hair removal option. The way it works is by using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) through a crystal. The light picks up on the dark pigment in the hair, contrasting with the complexion of the skin (not that you have to be particularly fair skinned for it to work well), and travels down the hair to the follicle where it does its work of stopping any more growth. As not all of the hair in any given area grows at the same rate, not all of the follicles are active at the same time, which is why repeat visits are needed to properly treat any section. Generally anywhere between six and 12 sessions are needed to be fully

effective, but then remember you’ll never have to worry about waxing or shaving that area ever again. It’s a permanent ‘reduction’. And you can treat anywhere to get rid of unwanted hair. The most popular areas are bikini, underarms and face – but backs, legs and chests are also quite simple to treat for both men and women, although facial areas may be ongoing due

“You’ll never have to worry about waxing or shaving again” to hormonal changes through life. Like any skin treatment, a patch test is conducted about a week before the proper treatment. The whole process is explained in comprehensive detail at this test appointment, and a sample test is conducted to see how your skin might react to the light, and what level of IPL would suit you best. When you think about the science, it makes sense that the hair doesn’t fall out instantly: it’s not like the harsh abrasion of waxing, pulling the hair out immediately and aggressively, so waiting for the hair to fall out after a treatment may take around nine days as it loosens its way from the disabled follicles. No instant fix. Just a permanent one. Brilliantly, the first session starts

off at a gallop, as around 30 per cent of hair treated is affected in this initial instance. I’m advised to let the hair I want to be removed grow to around a millimetre – if I’d waxed, threaded or plucked the hair previously then it could be regrowing at various lengths and speeds, meaning the area affected would have been more patchy. It’s all even, all ready and all clean. And sans deodorant, as requested. First, Jenny (the lovely lady conducting the IPL) numbs the area about to be treated with an ice pack. Then she covers it with a gel, and places dark glasses on both of us so that the light won’t affect our eyes. She draws a circle in white pencil around the area to be treated. And then, inch by inch, she starts to use the light on my underarms. It takes less than 20 minutes and I hardly feel a thing, although I was advised to have some aloe vera gel to hand in case I felt any tenderness once the numbness was fully gone. Obviously, different areas take varying amounts of time to treat, with a full leg not so much a case pf a lunchtime nip but an afternoon’s indulgence. But with prices starting at £42 for facial IPL, and cost reductions when a course of treatments is purchased, it’s a snip for a lifetime’s effect. I can’t wait until summer, when vest tops will certainly be my favourite. The Treatment Rooms, 21 New Road, Brighton, BN1 1UF, 01273 818444, www.thetreatmentrooms.com

Bird song Jonathan Harvey pulls no punches with new play Canary, finds Andrew Kay

J

onathan Harvey first came to notice with a play called Beautiful Thing. It was the story of teenage lovers set on a council estate and dealt with the issues they were confronted with from their friends, neighbours and family as their love grew. Oh, did I mention that they were both boys? No? Well, of course today we would hardly bat an eyelid at that; being gay is not the issue it once was, seeing homosexuality portrayed on the stage and screen is commonplace, even the small screen. In fact, it’s almost obligatory: the token gay to sit beside the token woman and the

token disabled person and token person of colour... And, in a way, perhaps that is what Canary is in part about, dispelling the tokenism and returning the issues to centre stage where they belong. Canary is the story of a group of people whose lives cross. It is about deceit and the terrible consequences that lies can breed. It starts in the late 1960s and ’70s against a backdrop of Thatcherism, miners’ strikes and the evangelical homophobia being touted by the bigoted Mary Whitehouse. Harvey uses all of this to set the time and the place but

also to leaven the mood with some comedy. Paula Wilcox as Maggie, for a brief moment, is fabulous, but then she is throughout the rest of the production as the mother. Mary Whitehouse opens the show with a speech to the audience about ridding the country of evil homosexuals; it’s funny but chilling stuff. Time shifts to the present and we see the start of the fallout from the lies that so many men were forced to tell. Today we have tolerance and understanding, but back then we had laws and prison sentences. It may be hard for younger people to understand that, less than 50 years ago, men

were still being sent to prison for being gay. Worse things could happen, too – and they did. Many men were forced to accept chemical castration to ‘cure’ their homosexuality, some were given electric shock therapy. Yes, all this, here in Britain in the last 50 years. It’s not comfortable material and that is almost certainly what Harvey has set out to do. Canary is, if anything, a play to remind us of that terrible history but also one to kick us up our collective backsides and remind us that, whilst we might all be ‘glad to be gay’, their are still issues to tackle. Aids is a core thread in the story, and we are shown the terrifying effect it had on us as a country and not just gay men. Harvey uses it to remind us that, whilst things are better, it is still with us, and that we cannot allow complacency to overtake the need for care and caution. He is also attacking the power of celebrity and of blackmail. Serious themes are served up with well placed humour, the play is pacey and episodic, the action shifts in time and place throughout and it is clear that Harvey is using some of the skills he has learned working in television. But above all, this is Harvey making strong statements in a bold theatrical way that sees him on top form. With a superb company and excellent staging, this is simply not to be missed. THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN Long time Lewes resident, Arthur Brown, was of course very famous back in the ’60s for his smash hit ‘Fire’. Flamboyant and theatrical, Brown’s music has constantly veered towards the progressive. Too much of a leftfield musical maverick to fully capitalise on that early success, his shows are still entertaining. Wednesday 23 June, Prince Albert

WYNTON MARSALIS Under the leadership of Wynton Marsalis, New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Centre comes to Brighton following a residency at the Barbican Centre. A big band in the classic mould, their vast repertoire spans the early days of jazz to the new music of the orchestra itself. Thursday 24 June, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome

KELE Taking time out from his Bloc Party commitments, Kele Okereke plays just one of two warm up shows prior to his Glastonbury appearance. Expect bouncing electro beats mixed with pop, R’n’B and disco. Thursday 24 June, Digital

PEARLY GATE MUSIC The alias of self-proclaimed deadbeat Zach Tillman, Pearly Gate Music is another in an increasingly long line of home spun, lo-fi, DIY eccentricities. PGM rise above the pack of mediocrity due to his engaging lyrical surrealism and some good songs. When getting noticed it also helps to have a younger brother (Josh) who plays drums with Fleet Foxes... Monday 28 June, Freebutt

UNITED FOLK

Folk meets punk as Adrian Edmondson And The Bad Shepherds headline Crawley Folk & Beer Festival

“I

t started in 1989 as a Saturday afternoon event with about half a dozen acts,” says Crawley Folk & Beer Festival programmer Dave Whatmore, who has been with the festival since its inception, and who is also the programmer for The Hawth all year round. “It’s a showcase for that genre of music. We use it to try out bands and acts with the view to bringing them back to The Hawth another time.” This year, Ade Edmondson And The Bad Shepherds are a highlight of the three-day event, invited back after the great reception they received last year. Playing Celtic-folk versions of punk and new wave classics such as ‘Up The Junction’ by Squeeze and The Jam’s ‘Down In The Tube Station At Midnight’, The Bad Shepherds utilise mandolin, fiddle and uillean pipes to whip up a storm. Martin Simpson is another headliner, and one of the greatest folk musicians of recent years (he won the 2010 BBC Folk Award for best traditional track). You can also catch the highly regarded blues guitarist Steven Finn and The Jemina Price Band (there’s always a strong streak of blues at this festival), Steve Phillips with The Rough Diamonds, Jon Boden with The Remnant Kings, and celebrated whistle and flute player Brian Finnegan (ex-Flook). “The festival is an opportunity for lesser known names to play in a bigger environment,” says

Dave, “people such as Martin Messent [a former Brighton resident with the voice of an angel and some brilliantly crafted songs]. Quite a lot of artists send me a MySpace link or send in demo CDs, and we do source acts in that way. Several years ago we Martin Simpson had Seth Lakeman and his brothers play here when they were completely unknown – they played all weekend for very little money...” With audiences over the three days of 3-4,000, loads of free workshops, craft stalls, demonstrations in Morris and traditional folk dance, as well as the bountifully stocked Beer Tent, the festival has become quite a regional pull. “I’m looking forward to The Shee – they’re a sixpiece all female Irish band based in London,” says Dave. “I’m also looking forward to Brian Finnegan and of course Ade Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds. They were fantastic last year.” Three-day passes with camping are available, along with one-day passes, and in the case of Ade Edmondson, you can buy a ticket just for that gig. HERE FOR THE BEER

Not Holding The String

Over the years the Real Ale Tent has become a real feature of Crawley Folk Festival. In fact, so much so, that this year it’s become a Beer Festival all of its own! In honour of the first official Crawley Beer Festival the organisers have doubled the selection of beers, ciders and perries on offer, with over 70 varieties from local breweries. Just some of the names to get you feeling thirsty include Cherry Bomb, Dark Star Hophead, Dark Star Sussex Ballards Wassail, Flowerpots Pots Black, Tring Colley’s Dog, Larkin’s Best, Hepworth Old, Welton Pride & Joy, Spectrum Wizzard and Tipples Ginger. The Beer Festival opens this Friday 25 June from 4pm onwards and Saturday and Sunday from 11am onwards, meaning visitors will have plenty of time to take a break from the music, stalls and workshops and sample a pint of the finest ale the local area has to offer. In fact, while sampling these fine brews festival goers won’t have to worry about missing out on the music as you can enjoy performances from great acts on the Beer Tent Stage absolutely free. What better way to spend a summer afternoon than with great music and a great local beer? Crawley Folk & Beer Festival, The Hawth, Crawley, Friday 25–Sunday 27 June. www.thehawth.co.uk

Sculptures, drawings and animations combine to form this exhibition by Matthew James Kay. Inspired by occurrences of mistake-making, grace, doubt and faith in everyday life and employing the stuff of common occurrences, Kay documents his experience of being human a quest for the mysterious lurking in the mundane. Req: Spray Paint Realism Req is an artist and musician whose roots are very much embedded in the early ’80s graffiti and hip-hop scene. At some point Req noticed how spray paint was a perfect medium for representing skin tones and his preference of the pre-Raphaelite ideals led him to choose the female form as a reference for his work. Req: Spray Paint Realism, Ink_d Gallery, 96 North Road, 01273 645299. Until 11 July

Quarter To Five Five artists (Nikki Black, Jessica Jordan, Peter Gosbee, Ruth Schmidt and Miss Aniela) are coming together to host their diverse works that include photography, paintings, ceramics and jewellery. Of particular note is the work of self-taught photographer Miss Aniela (Natalie Dybisz), whose self-portraits are outstanding works of creativity, often involving ‘cloning’. Fishing Quarter Gallery, 210 Kings Road Arches, Brighton seafront. Until 29 June

L7 Film

They’re British dancers from different sides of the tracks. Yougetme? Street dancers are forced to work with a ballet group in exchange for rehearsal space to prepare for the UK Street Dance Championships. Learn and grow time, people! Featuring Britain’s Got Talent’s Diversity, George Sampson and Flawless. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon

Showing this week Killers (12A) Dir: Robert Luketic

Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher star as a married couple who are in the ‘happily ever after’ stage until Spencer’s (Kutcher) 30th birthday. Bullets start to fly, literally, as it turns out Spencer’s a bit of an international spy and hitman and he’d forgotten to tell his bride. Hmm, an easy thing to slip the mind. Will their marriage last? Showing at Odeon, Cineworld and Connaught

Sex And The City 2 (15) Dir: Michael Patrick King

It’s been out for a few weeks now, but there’s still a chance to catch Carrie and the girls in their new outing (at least until Shrek Forever More takes over as the summer blockbuster in July). Back in the city, expect plenty of girly gossip, gorgeous clothes and handsome men. Prepare to swoon. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon

Greenberg (15) Dir: Noah Baumbach

Get Him To The Greek (15) Dir: Nicholas Stoller

A mad-cap adventure following British rock god Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) and Aaron Greenberg (Jonah Hill) – who’s been tasked with the job of escorting Snow to LA’s Greek Theatre for his gig. Sounds simple, right? Not quite so... Aldous is sex mad, weary of piles of money and is searching for the meaning of life. So when he learns his true love is in California, the $100million tour he’s about to embark becomes low priority. So far, so The Hangover, or so it sounds, with a rock star in the place of the stag party. Hilarity ensues and impossibly mad situations occur as poor Aaron is left to babysit Aldous, and has to get him to the Greek Theatre in time! But with drug smuggling in London, brawls in New York City and lap dances in Las Vegas, there is plenty standing in the way of what appears to be a straight-forward task. The rock star lifestyle, eh? Us, envious? Never... Showing at Odeon, Cineworld and Connaught

Wild Target (12A) Dir: Jonathan Lynn

Rupert Grint hangs up his wand and leaves the role of playing Harry Potter’s best friend Ron (will he ever

27

be known as anything else?) to play Tony, a young apprentice to Bill Nighy’s hitman character, Victor.

Except Tony believes Victor to be a detective... doh. A fun action comedy. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon

Ben Affleck plays Roger – a 40something former musician who’s at a crossroads in his life. Roger goes to housesit for his more successful brother in LA. While there, tries to reconnect with his old bandmate Rhys Ifans, but finds he has more in common with his bro’s PA. A funny drama about modern relationships. Showing at Duke of York’s

Dolphins (18) Dir: Mark Jay

Filmed locally and accompanied by a fantastic soundtrack featuring Fatboy Slim and hip-hop legend Roots Manuva, this is an unflinching snapshot of Brighton youth. Portraying the nihilistic worlds of Brighton’s boy racers and Emo selfharmers, the teen-gang movie has been reinvented to great effect in this director’s cut. Plus, we get to pick out familiar landmarks. Showing at Duke Of York’s

T

here’s a lot of blurriness around comedy. Fact. What’s comic theatre, what’s character comedy, what’s stand-up and what’s sketch comedy? And how can they all still be judged under the single banner of ‘comedy’? Blowing all of these pigeon-holes – and many more besides – out of the water is Liz Carr, with her theatre and standup mix while sitting down. If it makes you laugh, that’s the bottom line in this business. Liz Carr has underlined that bottom line – in massive thick felt tip – as she mines a dark humour vein and slaps you about the face with any preconceptions you may be harbouring. She’s rather good. Liz is already familiar to regular comedy-goers; you may have caught her regular sets at Krater, Comic Boom or Bent Double, and further afield at The Comedy Store, The Hackney Empire and any number of comedy festivals up and down the country with wheel chair access. Alternatively, you may just recognise her off the telly, either presenting with the BBC or when Sky TV funded and filmed he debut 2005 Edinburgh joint show, Abnormally Funny People. This is Liz Carr’s full length solo show and, in the part theatre piece,

Liz herself is the alter-ego of up-andcoming comic ‘Alex Saunders’. It’s a journey, navigating the pitfalls of disability and comedy for Alex, and Liz is in tow with the punchlines. Considering that Liz will mark her tenth year as a comedian in 2011 – and the calibre of her comedy – you can guarantee some hilarious stories will have been gathered along the way. SHORT FUSE

Within 24 hours of The Freebutt announcing they are in danger of being closed by the Council, it was fortuitous that once again their programming policy came up trumps. The first few numbers set the scene for the evening with story-songs echoing the New York anti-folk bands but with a chirpy English twist. The playfulness of the prolific trio, along with the songs’ differing styles – a Billy Bragg/Chuck Berry hybrid, followed by a cowbell solo and a ballad – was infectious and of well-crafted quality. They switched instruments for the excellent ‘Sleepy Eye’ and delivering harmonies reminiscent of Difford and Tilbrook throughout. I’d have liked another hour. The Freebutt, 17 June JJJJJ Steve Clements

This month’s special event launched Die Hard Mod, the latest offering from local publishing house Pulp Press, whose admirable manifesto is to get you to ‘switch off your TV and discover fiction like it used to be’. Author Charlie McQuaker was on hand to read extracts from his unashamedly old-fashioned and romantic novella with lashings of sex and violence thrown in for good measure. An exciting and inspiring evening, hinting at the wealth of burgeoning talent in this city. Next month’s event promises a selection of erotic fiction, but be warned – the last time they got saucy, they sold out. Komedia Studio Bar, 13 June JJJJJ Andrew Allen

MICHAEL CLARK: COME, BEEN AND GONE Expectations for Michael Clark are always high but on this occasion the Enfant Terrible of contemporary dance was simply terrible. Disappointing imagery, flat and unexciting lighting and predictable costumes did nothing to raise the game. If anything they lowered it, as they irritated and detracted from what was, at times, some very fine dancing. There was no doubting the calibre of the dance, it simply did not have a strong or cohesive vehicle to carry it. ‘Swamp’, in the first half, had the kind of contemporary dance score that grates, all the ubiquitous squeaks and farts and bumps. The main piece was danced to a soundtrack of Velvet Underground and Bowie and did, by the final section, manage to gather some momentum. But please, don’t insult us with a costume studded with hypodermics whilst playing ‘Heroin’ and please stop trying to shock us with fleeting pornographic images – it’s not big and it’s not clever. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 15 June JJJJJ Andrew Kay

BIG CHEER FOR AMAZE Isn't it great when a charity helps people so much they feel moved to give something back? Such were the origins of this fantastic gala night of comedy, and Baby Cow Productions’ involvement with local charity Amaze. Hosted by the endearingly funny rising comedy star Andi Oshi, the evening was made up of energetic and brilliant opener Seann Walsh, the compulsive deadpan class of Simon Evans, Steve Coogan with new material from Alan Partridge, comedy character Count Arthur Strong (with a Dracula highlight), and roundly headlined by the surreal wonder of Noel Fielding. Feelgood in every way. Dome Concert Hall, 17 June JJJJJ Victoria Nangle

SIMPLY RED Ok, so still having a soft spot for Simply Red definitely counts as a guilty pleasure. It might not be cool, but it was fun and saccharinely nostalgic to watch the ’80s and ’90s popsters in this beautiful outdoors setting. Some years ago, Mick Hucknall had an unappealing reputation. But he must have mellowed, as he was affable and modest as he worked his way enthusiastically through the Red's back catalogue. “We're still making music,” he assured his fans, but he knew what they really wanted were the hits, ending on ‘Something Got Me Started’ and ‘If You Don't Know Me By Now’. The angelic voice hasn’t changed, perhaps the attitude has; guilt or no guilt, this was a very pleasant evening. Bedgebury Pinetum, 12 June JJJJJ Rachel Pegg

Did you see Headlong’s production of Oscar Wilde’s Salome? comment@thelatest.co.uk

HEAD TRIP SALOME Theatre Royal Brighton, 16 June JJJJJ

H

aving seen two previous productions of Oscar Wilde’s least produced play, I was filled with excitement. I first saw Lyndsey Kemp’s production at the Roundhouse in London – gently erotic and calmly violent. Later I saw Stephen Berkoff’s poetic production, filled with dark menace, at the much missed Gardner Arts Centre. Here, Headlong and Curve delivered the darkest yet, a truly sinister rendering that chilled to the bone. The stage was raised and filled with black dust, the corner of which was swampy and puddled with water. In the centre a giant raised manhole marked the entrance to John The Baptist’s cell, a bunker surrounded by soldiers of different nations, jostling each other until, off stage, Salome appeared and held them mesmerized. Even before she appeared she was a powerful source. Zawe Ashton played Salome as a brattish, spoiled slut, a playground bully desperate to exert her power and her sex. She taunted the soldiers mercilessly, demanding to meet the Baptist, and finally one broke, unable to resist the lure of even a promised glance. It was an interesting portrayal and one that took a

while to gel, but when it did it was a fine performance. Jay Griffiths as her mother Herodias was hard, bitter and full of loathing. She stalked the stage, drank and berated Herod continuously. Herod was equally intoxicated, a stumbling, slurring creature, victim to all his vices and excesses. Con O’Neill was magnificent – lecherous one moment, violent the next – and of course, by the end of the play, a broken, shambolic mess. He managed to play the king as a sexual predator, in whose company neither man nor woman is safe. One minute he was pure machismo, the next a mincingly camp queen. No one was safe but least of all him. Lokanaan (John The Baptist) was a mountain of a man, visually imposing in heavy chains, but beneath that his voice had a soft clarity and air of reason. Wilde’s play is not an easy work to either watch or stage but this new production triumphs and eclipses those of Kemp and Berkoff in both a dramatic and stylistic sense. Powerfully designed, lit and staged, this is a theatrical coup that held the audience rapt and left in stunned silence. Andrew Kay

he Friends Provident Twenty20 competition is approaching its midway point with defending champions, the Sussex Sharks, making a strong defence of its title. At the time of writing, the Sharks have a 100 per cent record, with four of their matches played away from Hove. We now have the prospect of seven home matches in the next month, six at Hove and one in the beautiful surroundings of Arundel Castle on Sunday 11 July. One strange feature of the Sussex line-up this season is the presence in the side of three wicket keepers, two of whom keep in Tests for their respective countries, the New Zealander Brendan McCullum and England’s Matt Prior. But it is Andrew Hodd who has possession of the gloves, a huge vote of confidence in his keeping abilities and his part in Sussex’s long term plans. A highlight to date was an unbeaten 90 from 49 balls from Prior, recently left out of England's 13-man one-day international squad. He is showing the form in the short game that first brought him to the attention of the national selectors. Twenty20 cricket will remain a fun form of cricket, lucrative for players and clubs alike. But it should never replace the true test of a player – that of Test cricket. I am sure that McCullum and Prior will want to be remembered for what they did in the Test arena more that what they did in Twenty20 cricket. There has just been one Andrew Hodd downside of Sussex’s Twenty20 season so far – the decision of the Club’s administrators to have semiclad ‘Cowgirls’ dancing at the match against Somerset. Does the Club really think more women are going to be attracted to watch our great team by this? I know of several women who are now less inclined to come to watch Sussex because of this. One wrote to me: “It was especially offensive at the recent Sussex v Somerset 20/20 where at least three “One downside of females were dressed in Sussex shirts with skimpy the season so far – pants (presumably posing as shorts) which were cut the decision to have away to expose the lower half of their buttocks. This semi-clad ‘Cowgirls’ seems out of step with Sussex’s much vaunted dancing at the match” ‘family’ atmosphere, with family being highlighted as a Club ethic and key to the retention of players. It also seemed particularly inappropriate at this game since ‘kids for a quid’ had been relentlessly advertised in all local media”. From a cricketing point of view, and as a supporter of all forms of the game, I wonder whether the women’s game in Sussex is being taken seriously when, on one of the biggest stages for Sussex, women are objectified in this way.

here have been numerous biopics, biographies and articles about the late great John Lennon. Many hail him as a genius, some as a nightmare and a few as a madman. Paul was the saint, John the sinner – or vice versa, depending upon which Beatles myths you subscribe to. What I want to know is, why can’t he be both? No one is truly all one thing. Unless you live in 100 Acre Wood and your best friend is called Christopher Robin. And even those characters got to explain some pretty complex philosophical ideas. John Lennon’s got more demons than Hellraiser in BBC4’s Naked Lennon, but that doesn’t make him one himself. The picture painted in this interpretation of the ‘real’ John is of a man disassociated from society, alienated by his fame and with some serious daddy issues – both towards his father and himself, in relation to his son Julian. To be fair, with Christopher Ecclestone playing the bespectacled lead it was never going to be straightforward. Chris is older than John was when he died, but he’s an excellent actor so I wouldn’t begrudge him that. However, he’s not a particularly forgiving actor, and as such his portrayal of John is not the sympathetic misunderstood genius many fans may be wanting. He’s naked, but it’s not his nudity that’s the most aggressive stance. It’s the fact that he’s being a dick. Here’s the issue. It’s not that there’s a darker side, that he rows with Saint Paul, or that he leaves his wife and son in a haze of abstract thought. It’s that that’s all he does. Or most of it. Yes, it has been widely reported that John Lennon was ‘difficult’ at times. But it was also said that he was incredibly charming, which was how he got away with such behaviour. None of that is evident. Where’s the balance? It’s clearly shown how John and Yoko became so entranced with each other – they were each

“John and Yoko aren’t in any way likeable. Where’s the charm? The kiss before the smack?” other’s aspirational superstars. Never mind thinking outside the box – turn the box into a lemon, whack some wheels on it and then drive to the park. Surreal was too earthy a word for what this pair did together. Here they’re interesting and well portrayed but still not in any way likeable. Where’s the charm? The kiss before the smack? Perhaps it’s my own myth of John Lennon that’s not being shown here, or at least only half of it. After an hour and a half he still feels just as elusive. But, despite myself, even more interesting.
